• Tuxedo Load Balancing

  A question I often receive is how does Tuxedo perform load balancing.  This is often asked by customers that see an imbalance in the number of requests handled by servers offering a specific service. First of all let me say that Tuxedo really does load or request optimization instead of load balancing.  What I mean by that is that Tuxedo doesn't attempt to ensure that all servers offering a specific service get the same number of requests, but instead attempts to ensure that requests are processed in the least amount of time.   Simple round robin "load balancing" can be employed to ensure that all servers for a particular service are given the same number of requests.  But the question I ask is, "to what benefit"?  Instead Tuxedo scans the queues (which may or may not correspond to servers based upon SSSQ - Single Server Single Queue or MSSQ - Multiple Server Single Queue) to determine on which queue a request should be placed.  The scan is always performed in the same order and during the scan if a queue is empty the request is immediately placed on that queue and request routing is done.  However, should all the queues be busy, meaning that requests are currently being processed, Tuxedo chooses the queue with the least amount of "work" queued to it where work is the sum of all the requests queued weighted by their "load" value as defined in the UBBCONFIG file.  What this means is that under light loads, only the first few queues (servers) process all the requests as an empty queue is often found before reaching the end of the scan.  Thus the first few servers in the queue handle most of the requests.  While this sounds non-optimal, in fact it capitalizes on the underlying operating systems and hardware behavior to produce the best possible performance.  Round Robin scheduling would spread the requests across all the available servers and thus require all of them to be in memory, and likely not share much in the way of hardware or memory caches.  Tuxedo's system maximizes the various caches and thus optimizes overall performance.  Hopefully this makes sense and now explains why you may see a few servers handling most of the requests.  Under heavy load, meaning enough load to keep all servers that can handle a request busy, you should see a relatively equal number of requests processed.  Next post I'll try and cover how this applies to servers in a clustered (MP) environment because the load balancing there is a little more complicated. • Virtual Lab part 2&ndash;Templates, Patterns, Baselines

  Once you have a good virtualization platform chosen, whether it is a desktop, server or laptop environment, the temptation is to build “X”.  “X” may be a SharePoint lab, a Virtual Cluster, an AD test environment or some other cool project that you really need RIGHT NOW.  That would be doing it wrong. My grandfather taught woodworking and cabinetmaking for twenty-seven years at a trade school in Alabama.  He was the first instructor hired at that school and the only teacher for the first two years.  His students built tables, chairs, and workbenches so the school could start its HVAC courses.   Visiting as a child, I also noticed many extra “helper” stands, benches, holders, and gadgets all built from wood.  What does that have to do with a virtual lab, you ask?  Well, that is the same approach you should take.  Build stuff that you will use.  Not for solving a particular problem, but to let the Virtual Lab be part of your normal troubleshooting toolkit. Start with basic copies of various Operating Systems.  Load and patch server and desktop OS environments.  This also helps build your collection of ISO files, another essential element of a virtual Lab.  Once you have these “baseline” images, you can use your Virtualization software’s snapshot capability to freeze the image.  Clone the snapshot and you have a brand new fully patched machine in mere moments.  You may have to sysprep some of the Microsoft OS environments if you are going to create a domain environment or experiment with clustering.  That is still much faster than loading and patching from scratch. So once you have a stock of raw materials (baseline images in this case) where should you start.  Again, my grandfather’s workshop gives us the answer.  In the shop it was workbenches and tables to hold large workpieces that made the equipment more useful.  In a Windows environment the same role falls to the fundamental network services:  DHCP, DNS, Active Directory, Routing, File Services, and Storage services.  Plan your internal network setup.  Build out an AD controller with all the features listed.  Make the actual domain an isolated domain so it will not care about where you take it.  Add the Microsoft iSCSI target.  Once you have this single system, you can leverage it for almost any network environment beyond a simple stand-alone system. Having these templates and fundamental infrastructure elements ready to run means I can build a quick lab in minutes instead of hours.  My solutions are well-tested, my processes fully documented with screenshots, and my plans validated well before I have to make any changes to client systems.  the work I put in is easily returned in increased value and client satisfaction.

• BizTalk 2010 Certification Exam

  I took a shot at new (to me) certification exam for BizTalk 2010. I was able to pass it without any preparation just based on the experience. That does not mean this exam is a very simple one. Comparing to previous (2006 R2) it covers some new areas (like WCF) and has some demanding questions and situation to think about. But the most challenging factor is broad feature coverage. Overall, the impression that if BizTalk continues to grow in scope it’s better to create separate exams for core functionality and extended features (like EDI, RFID, LOB adapters) because it’s really hard to cover vast array of BizTalk capabilities. As far as required knowledge and questions allocation I think Microsoft description is on target. There were definitely more questions on deployment, configuration and administration aspects comparing to previous exam. WCF and WCF based adapters now play big role and this topic was covered well too. Extended functionality is claimed at 13% of the exam, I felt there were plenty of RFID questions but not many EDI, that’s why I thought it’d be useful to split exam into two to cover all of them equally. BRE is still there and good, cause it’s usually not very known/loved feature of the package. At the and, for those who plan to get certified, my advice would be to know all those areas of BizTalk for guaranteed passing: messaging and orchestrations, core adapters, routing, patterns; development of all artifacts and orchestrations; debugging and exceptions handling; packaging, deployment, tracking and administration; WCF bindings and adapters; BAM, BRE, RFID, EDI, etc. You may get by not knowing one smaller non-essential part (like I did with RFID, for example). In such case you better know all other areas very well to cover for the weak spot. If there more than one whiteouts in the knowledge it’s good idea to study and prepare: MSDN, blogs, virtual labs and good VM to play with can help when experience is not enough. • Sharing one static ip for both ftp and www service

  Trying to figure out how to update the Zone record and configure webserver so that one application on the webserver is accessible by public. I'm completely not good at NS/DNS/NAT/firewall/routing/port forwarding/networking etc. "faraday" is the intranet name. Everyone within local network can access all applications hosted on "faraday". Hostname for webserver is "www", FTP server is "ftpserver". Both servers running RHEL4 OS. The goal is to allow anyone outside the company network (public) to access only one of the many applications on "faraday". Hope somebody can help me with some of the questions below, if not all. From zoneedit record, the static IP is used by FTP now. Can I use the same existing static IP - 219.95.10.100, for web service? Currently anyone who enter "http://www.abc.com.my" will be directed to "http://www.abc.com". I don't want this to change. Currently, no one else, except employee on local network, can access "faraday" web pages. How to configure so that when anyone type "http://thisapp.abc.com.my" on their web browser, the url will lead them to "http://faraday/thisapp" (application folder is /var/www/html/thisapp on RHEL4 web server). If possible, how to set the URL will continue to show "http://thisapp.abc.com.my" instead of "http://faraday/thisapp" How to limit/restrict user (those who are not from local network) so they only have access to "http://thisapp.abc.com.my", but not "http://faraday" or "http://faraday/anotherapp", etc. What's the configuration changes needed in /etc/httpd.conf on web server? Company domain name is "abc.com.my". Following is the zone records on www.zoneedit.com. • WiFi connected to router, but no internet connection

  I just got a new notebook, a ThinkPad Edge E530, and installed Ubuntu on it. I'm pretty new to Ubuntu. On the same laptop, running Windows 7, the Wi-Fi connection works fine. Ethernet connection works both on Win7 and on Ubuntu. Only Wi-Fi on Ubuntu does not work; it connects to the Wi-Fi access point but I don't have Internet access. My wireless card is Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230. What can fix the problem? • Bridging 10GbE with 12.04 - bridging works but the bridging computer has no internet access

  I have been trying to get 12.04 bridging working with two 10GbE cards. I have 2 10GbE cards in a linux box being used only for this bridge, 1 with 2 10GbaseT ports and another with a single CX4 port. I have 2 client computers connected with 10GbaseT cards and the CX4 card connects to a procurve switch. I can get the bridging happening mostly the way that I want, The clients receive dhcp information from the dhcp server (not the bridging machine) and can connect to and properly see the rest of the network. Speeds are ok, not amazing but working on that is another matter. My problem is that the bridging machine has no internet access ... meaning I can't update anything or apt-get anything It can ping all other machines on the local network. I've tried the helpful hints from: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NetworkConnectionBridge "Enabling Internet Use on the Bridging Computer" and get the following RTNETLINK answers: File exists but dhclient br0 does nothing for me :( I think if it is anything it a multiple route problem as both br0 and eth4 have ipaddresses ... even though I have only set it up so that br0 has one ...   I have installed ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop. Wifi is switched on by default on startup. I can disable it rightclicking the network manager icon in the gnome bar. How can I set it to have wifi switched off as default? Alternatively, how can I switch off wifi on the console? I tried already the rfkill command but it does not list any devices and it does not switch off wifi, I tried different parameters. This is a standard install of the Ubuntu 10.04 i386 Desktop Live CD on an IBM T40 Laptop. • Dealing with coworkers when developing, need advice [closed]

  I developed our current project architecture and started developing it on my own (reaching something like, revision 40). We're developing a simple subway routing framework and my design seemed to be done extremely well - several main models, corresponding views, main logic and data structures were modeled "as they should be" and fully separated from rendering, algorithmic part was also implemented apart from the main models and had a minor number of intersection points. I would call that design scalable, customizable, easy-to-implement, interacting mostly based on the "black box interaction" and, well, very nice. Now, what was done: I started some implementations of the corresponding interfaces, ported some convenient libraries and wrote implementation stubs for some application parts. I had the document describing coding style and examples of that coding style usage (my own written code). I forced the usage of more or less modern C++ development techniques, including no-delete code (wrapped via smart pointers) and etc. I documented the purpose of concrete interface implementations and how they should be used. Unit tests (mostly, integration tests, because there wasn't a lot of "actual" code) and a set of mocks for all the core abstractions. I was absent for 12 days. What do we have now (the project was developed by 4 other members of the team): 3 different coding styles all over the project (I guess, two of them agreed to use the same style :), same applies to the naming of our abstractions (e.g CommonPathData.h, SubwaySchemeStructures.h), which are basically headers declaring some data structures. Absolute lack of documentation for the recently implemented parts. What I could recently call a single-purpose-abstraction now handles at least 2 different types of events, has tight coupling with other parts and so on. Half of the used interfaces now contain member variables (sic!). Raw pointer usage almost everywhere. Unit tests disabled, because "(Rev.57) They are unnecessary for this project". ... (that's probably not everything). Commit history shows that my design was interpreted as an overkill and people started combining it with personal bicycles and reimplemented wheels and then had problems integrating code chunks. Now - the project still does only a small amount of what it has to do, we have severe integration problems, I assume some memory leaks. Is there anything possible to do in this case? I do realize that all my efforts didn't have any benefit, but the deadline is pretty soon and we have to do something. Did someone have a similar situation? Basically I thought that a good (well, I did everything that I could) start for the project would probably lead to something nice, however, I understand that I'm wrong. Any advice would be appreciated, sorry for my bad english.

• Exchange 2010, Exchange 2003 Mail Flow issue

  While performing the initial Exchange 2010 deployment for a customer migrating from Exchange 2003, I ran into an issue with mail flow between the two environments.  The Exchange 2003 mailboxes could send to Exchange 2010, as well as to and from the internet.  Exchange 2010 mailboxes could send and receive to the internet, however they could not send to Exchange 2003 mailboxes.   After scouring the internet for a solution, it seemed quite a few people were experiencing this issue with no resolution to be found, or at least not easily.  After many attempts of manually deleting and recreating the routing group connectors,  I finally lucked onto the answer in an obscure comment left to another blogger.   If inheritable permissions are not allowed on the Exchange 2003 object in the Active Directory schema, exchange server authentication cannot be achieved between the servers.   It seems when Blackberry Enterprise Server gets added to 2003 environments, a lot of Admins get tricky and add the BES Admin user explicitly to the server object  to allow  inheritance down from there to all mailboxes.  The problem is they also coincidently turn off inheritance to the server object itself from its parent containers.  You can re-establish inheritance without overwriting the existing ACL however so that the BES Admin can remain in the server object ACL.   By re-establishing inheritance to the 2003 server object, mail flow was instantly restored between the servers.    To re-establish inheritance: 1. Open ASDIedit by adding the snap-in to a MMC (should be included on your 2008 server where Exchange 2010 is installed) 2. Navigate to Configuration > Services > Microsoft Exchange > Exchange Organization > Administrative Groups > First Administrative Group > Servers 3. In the right pane, right click on the CN=Server Name of your Exchange 2003 Server, select properties 4. Navigate to the Security tab, hit advanced toward the bottom. 5. Check the checkbox that reads “include inheritable permissions” toward the bottom of the dialogue box.

• Wifi problems after upgrading to 13.10

  I just upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10, but since the upgrade I don't have internet access via wifi anymore. I can: See networks Connect to a network Ping myself (localhost, 192.168.0.103) I can't: Ping others (including other devices on the same wireless network, including the gateway/router) Resolve hosts Access any other external resource, whether on my own network or on the internet Using Wireshark, I noticed my computer is continuously sending ARP-requests like "Who has 192.168.0.1 [which is the gateway]? Tell 192.168.0.103". It doesn't get any replies though. When I ping another IP-address for which it knows the mac-address (from cache), it turns out a packet loss of 90% occurs, and even if a packet manages to arrive it takes around 3000ms. • PHP - Internal APIs/Libraries - What makes sense?

  I've been having a discussion lately with some colleagues about the best way to approach a new project, and thought it'd be interesting to get some external thoughts thrown into the mix. Basically, we're redeveloping a fairly large site (written in PHP) and have differing opinions on how the platform should be setup. Requirements: The platform will need to support multiple internal websites, as well as external (non-PHP) projects which at the moment consist of a mobile app and a toolbar. We have no plans/need in the foreseeable future to open up an API externally (for use in products other than our own). My opinion: We should have a library of well documented native model classes which can be shared between projects. These models will represent everything in our database and can take advantage of object orientated features such as inheritance, traits, magic methods, etc. etc. As well as employing ORM. We can then add an API layer on top of these models which can basically accept requests and route them to the appropriate methods, translating the response so that it can be used platform independently. This routing for each method can be setup as and when it's required. Their opinion: We should have a single HTTP API which is used by all projects (internal PHP ones or otherwise). My thoughts: To me, there are a number of issues with using the sole HTTP API approach: It will be very expensive performance wise. One page request will result in several additional http requests (which although local, are still ones that Apache will need to handle). You'll lose all of the best features PHP has for OO development. From simple inheritance, to employing the likes of ORM which can save you writing a lot of code. For internal projects, the actual process makes me cringe. To get a users name, for example, a request would go out of our box, over the LAN, back in, then run through a script which calls a method, JSON encodes the output and feeds that back. That would then need to be JSON decoded, and be presented as an array ready to use. Working with arrays, as appose to objects, makes me sad in a modern PHP framework. Their thoughts (and my responses): Having one method of doing thing keeps things simple. - You'd only do things differently if you were using a different language anyway. It will become robust. - Seeing as the API will run off the library of models, I think my option would be just as robust. What do you think? I'd be really interested to hear the thoughts of others on this, especially as opinions on both sides are not founded on any past experience.

• Looking for an algorithm to connect dots - shortest route

  I have written a program to solve a special puzzle, but now I'm kind of stuck at the following problem: I have about 3200 points/nodes/dots. Each of these points is connected to a few other points (usually 2-5, theoretical limit is 1-26). I have exactly one starting point and about 30 exit points (probably all of the exit points are connected to each other). Many of these 3200 points are probably not connected to neither start nor end point in any way, like a separate net, but all points are connected to at least one other point. I need to find the shortest number of hops to go from entry to exit. There is no distance between the points (unlike the road or train routing problem), just the number of hops counts. I need to find all solutions with the shortest number of hops, and not just one solution, but all. And potentially also solutions with one more hop etc. I expect to have a solution with about 30-50 hops to go from start to exit. I already tried: 1) randomly trying possibilities and just starting over when the count was bigger than a previous solution. I got first solution with 3500 hops, then it got down to about 97 after some minutes, but looking at the solutions I saw problems like unnecessary loops and stuff, so I tried to optimize a bit (like not going back where it came from etc.). More optimizations are possible, but this random thing doesn't find all best solutions or takes too long. 2) Recursively run through all ways from start (chess-problem-like) and breaking the try when it reached a previous point. This was looping at about a length of 120 nodes, so it tries chains that are (probably) by far too long. If we calculate 4 possibilities and 120 nodes, we're reaching 1.7E72 possibilities, which is not possible to calculate through. This is called Depth-first search (DFS) as I found out in the meantime. Maybe I should try Breadth-first search by adding some queue? The connections between the points are actually moves you can make in the game and the points are how the game looks like after you made the move. What would be the algorithm to use for this problem? I'm using C#.NET, but the language shouldn't matter.

• How do I server multiple domains from the same directory and codebase without my configuraton breaking when apache.conf is overwritten?

  I have 20 domains on a VPS running cPanel. One public_html is filled with code, the remaining 19 are symbolic links to that one. (For example, assets is a directory within public_html ... for the 19 others, there's a symbolic link to that directory in each each accounts public_html dir.) It's all PHP / MySQL database driven, with content changing depending on the domain. It works like a charm, assuming cPanel has suExec enabled correctly, and assuming apache.conf does NOT have SymLinksIfOwnerMatch enabled. However, every few weeks, my apache.conf is mysteriously overwritten, re-enabling SymLinksIfOwnerMatch, and disabling all 19 linked sites for as long as it takes for me to notice. Here's the offending line in apache.conf: <Directory "/"> AllowOverride All Options ExecCGI FollowSymLinks IncludesNOEXEC Indexes SymLinksIfOwnerMatch </Directory> The addition of SymLinksIfOwnerMatch disables the sites in a strange way ... the html is generated correctly, but all css/js/image in the html fails to load. Clicking any link redirects to /. And I have no idea why. Since I've failed to find the cause of whatever cPanel/security update is overwriting apache.conf, I thought there might be a more correct way to accomplish my goal using group permissions. I've created a 'www' group, added all accounts to the group, and chmod -R'd the code source to use that group. Everything is 644 or 755. But doesn't seem to be enough. My unix isn't that strong. Do you need to restart something for group changes to take effect? Probably not. Anyways, I'm entering unknown territory. Can anyone recommend the right way to configure a website for multiple sites using one codebase that doesn't rely on apache.conf?

• HAProxy reqrep remove URI on backend request

  real quick question regarding HAProxy reqrep. I am trying to rewrite/replace the request that gets sent to the backend. I have the following example domain and URIs http://domain/web1 http://domain/web2 I want web1 to go to backend webfarm1, and web2 to go to webfarm2. Currently this does happen. However I want to strip off the web1 or web2 URI when the request is sent to the backend. • RouterOS on Hyper-V (v3/2012) - any way to get it working?

  Trying to set up a small VPN point to connect into a remote Hyper-V cluster using ROuterOS. Anyone got it working ON Hyper-V with the latest builds of RouterOS? It seems the legacy network adapter is not supported anymore either (or just broken). The platform is a Windows Server 2012 RC. This is not a high performance setup - the RouterOS wont do the routing for more than the backend administrative access, and the only real traffic we will see there is when ISO images for new operating systems are uploaded. Otherwise we will have possibly RDP traffic as well as web / http traffioc, but this is internal only (dashboards, some control panel). The server has no public business. So the price for non virtualized network cards is ok for me. After hooking up - ping just does not work. After some time I see in windows (arp -a on the command line), so I know that the Hyper-V side is set up properly. Just no packets arrived. I have turned off all protection on Hyper-V (or : not turned them on), so no MAC spoofing protection etc. in the Advanced page for the legacy adapters. Unless I can get it work I will have to resort to using a windows install as router / VPN endpoint, which introduces another OS into the fabric (we run all routers etc. so far on mikrotik in hardware, which is why I want this one to be RouterOS, too). And no, putting hardware there is NOT an option - the cost would be significant.

• Using jQuery to Insert a New Database Record

  The goal of this blog entry is to explore the easiest way of inserting a new record into a database using jQuery and .NET. I’m going to explore two approaches: using Generic Handlers and using a WCF service (In a future blog entry I’ll take a look at OData and WCF Data Services). Create the ASP.NET Project I’ll start by creating a new empty ASP.NET application with Visual Studio 2010. Select the menu option File, New Project and select the ASP.NET Empty Web Application project template. Setup the Database and Data Model I’ll use my standard MoviesDB.mdf movies database. This database contains one table named Movies that looks like this: I’ll use the ADO.NET Entity Framework to represent my database data: Select the menu option Project, Add New Item and select the ADO.NET Entity Data Model project item. Name the data model MoviesDB.edmx and click the Add button. In the Choose Model Contents step, select Generate from database and click the Next button. In the Choose Your Data Connection step, leave all of the defaults and click the Next button. In the Choose Your Data Objects step, select the Movies table and click the Finish button. Unfortunately, Visual Studio 2010 cannot spell movie correctly :) You need to click on Movy and change the name of the class to Movie. In the Properties window, change the Entity Set Name to Movies. Using a Generic Handler In this section, we’ll use jQuery with an ASP.NET generic handler to insert a new record into the database. A generic handler is similar to an ASP.NET page, but it does not have any of the overhead. It consists of one method named ProcessRequest(). Select the menu option Project, Add New Item and select the Generic Handler project item. Name your new generic handler InsertMovie.ashx and click the Add button. Using jQuery with the Generic Handler We can call the InsertMovie.ashx generic handler from jQuery by using the standard jQuery post() method. The jQuery library is included with the following SCRIPT tag: <script src="http://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/jquery/jquery-1.4.2.js" type="text/javascript"></script> The jQuery library is included on the Microsoft Ajax CDN so you can always easily include the jQuery library in your applications. You can learn more about the CDN at this website: http://www.asp.net/ajaxLibrary/cdn.ashx When you click the Add Movie button, the jQuery post() method is called to post the form data to the InsertMovie.ashx generic handler. Notice that the form values are serialized into a URL encoded string by calling the jQuery serialize() method. The serialize() method uses the name attribute of form fields and not the id attribute. Notes on this Approach This is a very low-level approach to interacting with .NET through jQuery – but it is simple and it works! And, you don’t need to use any JavaScript libraries in addition to the jQuery library to use this approach. The signature for the jQuery post() callback method looks like this: callback(data, textStatus, XmlHttpRequest) The second parameter, textStatus, returns the HTTP status code from the server. I tried returning different status codes from the generic handler with an eye towards implementing server validation by returning a status code such as 400 Bad Request when validation fails (see http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec10.html ). I finally figured out that the callback is not invoked when the textStatus has any value other than “success”. Using a WCF Service As an alternative to posting to a generic handler, you can create a WCF service. You create a new WCF service by selecting the menu option Project, Add New Item and selecting the Ajax-enabled WCF Service project item. Name your WCF service InsertMovie.svc and click the Add button. The service always returns the value true. Notice that the service in Listing 3 includes the following attribute: [ServiceBehavior(IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults=true)] You need to include this attribute if you want to get detailed error information back to the client. When you are building an application, you should always include this attribute. When you are ready to release your application, you should remove this attribute for security reasons. Using jQuery with the WCF Service Calling a WCF service from jQuery requires a little more work than calling a generic handler from jQuery. Any parameters included with the request must be JSON encoded. Unfortunately, jQuery does not include a method for serializing JSON (Although, oddly, jQuery does include a parseJSON() method for deserializing JSON). Therefore, we need to use an additional library to handle the JSON serialization. The page in Listing 4 illustrates how you can call a WCF service from jQuery. First, notice that the page includes both the jQuery library and Douglas Crockford’s JSON2 library: <script src="Scripts/json2.js" type="text/javascript"></script> You need to include the JSON2 library to serialize the form values into JSON. You can download the JSON2 library from the following location: http://www.json.org/js.html When you click the button to submit the form, the form data is converted into a JavaScript object: // Convert the form into an object var data = { title: $("#title").val(), director: $("#director").val() }; Next, the data is serialized into JSON using the JSON2 library: // JSONify the data var data = JSON.stringify(data); Finally, the form data is posted to the WCF service by calling the jQuery ajax() method: // Post it $.ajax({   type: "POST",   contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",   url: "MovieService.svc/Insert",   data: data,   dataType: "json",   success: insertCallback }); You can’t use the standard jQuery post() method because you must set the content-type of the request to be application/json. Otherwise, the WCF service will reject the request for security reasons. The following value is passed to the insertCallback method: {"d":true} For security reasons, a WCF service always returns a response with a “d” wrapper.   I have a Ubuntu guest configured with two interfaces, eth0 is using NAT and works fine, I can access the net. The second interface eth1 is set to host only networking and VirtualBox has created a vboxnet0 virtual adapter on the host. I've configured vboxnet0 in VirtualBox adapter settings with the following: ip 192.168.21.20 subnet 255.255.255.0 Once the VM guest is running, ifconfig on OSX has vboxnet0 setup as: vboxnet0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 ether 0a:00:27:00:00:00 inet 192.168.21.20 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.21.255 In the guest, eth0 is set to use DHCP, I've statically assigned eth1 to 192.168.21.20 (is this a mistake?): auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.21.20 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.21.0 broadcast 192.168.21.255 gateway 192.168.21.1 There is no device on 192.168.21.1 - what should I set my gateway to? • Configuring default gateway returned by dhcp server

  Hello, I have a machine which connects via ethernet to a private LAN, and wireless to a network which provides internet connectivity. The private LAN uses a wireless router to perform DHCP. The problem is that the wireless and NIC adapters have different default gateways. The default gateway for the private LAN has a lower adapter metric, and is thus chosen by the routing algorithm. I am thus unable to browse the internet when connected to both adapters. The following link has a solution for manually setting the adapter metric to a high number. http://superuser.com/questions/77822/how-to-tell-windows-7-to-ignore-a-default-gateway I was hoping to find a different solution. Does any one know of a router that allows you to configure its DHCP server to return an empty default gateway? I cannot find such an option for my linksys wrt300n. Configuring a static ip address with no default gateway does work, however I would like to use DHCP if possible. Does anyone know of a different way to specify a default gateway for a windows 7 machine with multiple network adapters without mucking with the adapter metric? Thanks, Matthew
