  • Database advantages? Access, MySQL, msSQL, or any others?

    Dear all Stackoverflowers, I just started to learn programming and now I'm putting this question online based on a quote: no question is silly My work needs to develop a order system based on web, which wants a database system. Since using Excel for years as a general office user, I naturally turn this to Access. However, most people say Access is very limited comparing to MySQL or MSSQL, or any other more professional database system. But after developing some functions for my company's order system, I really find Access can fulfill my request. And I also tried MSSQL to develop, which I found it not quite convenient to use. I have searched in stackoverflow and find no general answer about my doubt. Now I am sincerely hoping some experienced and professional developers could clear my doubts. Now I'm listing some Access advantages, which I don't think other database system have. I hope you could help me also find these advantages in others. 1. Access is portable, I can just copy a xxx.accdb file to my company and continue with development. 2. Access is easy to generate helpful table, for example, it will automatically generate a field that can automatically count, could be used as primary key value. 3. it is more compatable with Excel, to display and filter data. 4. importantly, it nerely needs no environment to setup, just needs MS Office to be installed. ............others However, I also find some points that MSSQL is advantaged: 1. security reasons 2. easy to backup, ( just use BACKUP..... sql statement to do it) 3. can edit stored procedure to save some functions to database ...............others specifically, I wish some friends could tell me how to make other database portable? since I usually work both at home and in office. It's a headache to move MSSQL work to my office, since the version of MSSQL is not the same. Thank you all and best regards, :)

    hello, i am trying to get the headers of an ajax request i made through jquery $.get(url, function(response, textStatus, headers ) { console.log("Response: %o", response); console.log("TextStatus: %o", textStatus); console.log("Request: %o", headers); } ); this does not seem to be working however: the response and textstatus are printing, but the "headers" object seems to be undefined i simply want to check if it is what i expect (content type='excel', etc) or if the response type is html, i can assume the page i was calling is an error

    i have a web application that export CSV and i logged in as admin but what happened during the exportation the IE opens a new tab and export the CSV but what happens next when you click any of the link on the web app you will automatically logout! This only happen on IE. here is the header i used: header("Content-type:application/vnd.ms-excel"); header("Content-disposition:attachment;filename=".$this->filename); I am using cakephp 1.3.x.x TIA :D

  • Couldn't attachto Firefox 3.x browser by using Browser.AttachTo<FireFox>method in WatiN 2.0 RC1

    I am using HTTPWatch automation API to launch a new Firefox instance like that: HttpWatch.Controller ct = new HttpWatch.Controller(); HttpWatch.Plugin plugin = ct.FireFox.New(""); plugin.GotoURL("http://www.google.com"); These codes could start a Firefox browser successfully. Then I want to control the browser in WatiN 2.0: FireFox ff = Browser.AttachTo<FireFox>(Find.ByTitle("Google")); WatiN could not find Firefox window (JSSH plugin has been added in Firefox). But the same test on IE 7 is ok. I even tried to open a Firefox window manually and visit google.com page. WaitN in IE7 could attach to the browser, but Firefox failed. Is there anything wrong with my codes? Or any other advice? Thanks in advance!   • Best way to integrate StyleCop with TFS CI

    I've been doing research on how to enable source analysis for the project I'm working on and plan to use StyleCop. The setup I have is a TFS Server for source control, using TFS Continuous Integration. I want to enable source analysis for CI builds and daily builds run on the build machine, and not only for those run on developers' machines. It basically modifies the csproj file for the purpose.   • WatiN LogonDialogHandlers not working correctly in Windows 7

    I have recently updated to Windows 7, VS2010 and IE8. We have an automation suite running tests against IE using WatiN. These tests require the logon dialog handler to be used in order to log different AD Users into the IE Browser. This works perfectly when using Windows XP and IE8, but now using Windows 7 has resulted in the Windows Security dialog box no longer being recognised, the dialogue box is just being ignored.     Hi, Working in IT for 5 years, I focused on system integration - testing, performance tests and analysis, automation etc. Altough I am working for one of the biggest IT companies, I have the possibility to come up with my own ideas and realize them - for example I have written C# (with SQL backend) bugtracker application with management elements...and I really liked it. I am very creative person but being 25 y/o, I am wondering whether it is too late. I understand the logic of programming but as I was never very good in math I assume I have no chance to become professional programmer in this age. What do you think? Thanks

If the connection is successful, I can verify that ServerConnection.ConnectTimeout is set to 2 (seconds), but when I supply a bogus name for the SQL Server instance, it still attempts to connect to it for ~ 15 seconds (which is I believe the default timeout value). Does anyone have experience with setting SMO connection timeout? Thank you in advance.

    As part of some build automation of running xUnit.net tests with MSBuild, I'm running into a case where I need to loop over a batch of items. Inside the loop, I need to detect whether an iteration failed, but I want to continue executing regardless. Then after the batched bit, I need to know whether one or more errors have occurred in order to report the outcome to TeamBuild. IOW, in pseudocode: Task Name=RunTests CreateItems ForEach item CallTarget Target=RunTest ContinueOnError=true CombineNUnitResults Report success/failure Task Name=RunTest XUnit item I'm hoping this can be achieved without a custom task (or hacking the xunit.net MSBuild task as Jonne did).     I'm looking for some options to programmatically create a Word document from within a Silverlight 4 application. I found two approaches which seemed promising at first but don't look like they will work. OpenXML SDK The OpenXML SDK isn't available for Silverlight at this time. Word Automation via COM Interop dynamic wordApplication = AutomationFactory.CreateObject("Word.Application"); Apparently this requires that the Silverlight 4 application be granted permission to run with elevated privileges, which is only available for out-of-browser applications (which ours isn't) My other thought is to hand off the request to a back-end service which doesn't have these limitations. Wanted to check for any ideas before going down that path. Thank you!

    Hi folks, I'm trying to develop an image focusing algorithm for some test automation work. I've chosen to use AForge.net, since it seems like a nice mature .net friendly system. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find information on building autofocus algorithms from scratch, so I've given it my best try: take image. apply sobel edge detection filter, which generates a greyscale edge outline. generate a histogram and save the standard dev. move camera one step closer to subject and take another picture. if the standard dev is smaller than previous one, we're getting more in focus. otherwise, we've past the optimal distance to be taking pictures. is there a better way? update: HUGE flaw in this, by the way. as I get past the optimal focus point, my "image in focus" value continues growing. you'd expect a parabolic-ish function looking at distance/focus-value, but in reality you get something that's more logarithmic

  • How should one import large amounts of data for FIT/Fitnesse tests?

    We have a scheduling engine with large amounts of test data to test all the scenarios, so test automation is critical. We're currently hoping to use FIT/Fitnesse. However a single test has quite a large table of test data, so it doesn't fit very well into the mould of "two or three inputs, one or more outputs" that Fitnesse uses in its examples. Hopefully the other functionality of Fitnesse makes it worth using it. I hear that there is a way to initialize an application for a FIT test with an Excel spreadsheet - not the Spreadsheet to Fitness function, mind you - but I haven't been able to find it so far. Once the whole spreadsheet is loaded into the application, and the application does its thing, we plan to compare either a number of output rows, or perhaps just the last row, to see if the test passes. The application is currently pulling test data from a database for manual tests, but writing to a database, then initializing from it, is not preferred because of the performance impact. The application is written in C#.

  • WebDAV auto-versioning in Git or Hg or any modern VCS

    I just recently learned of SVN's auto-versioning feature for WebDAV. Although I understand this is not replacement for proper versioning, with messages documenting change sets, it strikes me as a solid and safe replacement to Dropbox (minus nice GUIs and web pages). However, since commits in auto-versioning are frequent, I'd imagine that Git or Hg would be better suited for this, just because of their more compact databases (although I wonder if the distributed nature of things could make the automation ugly for resolving conflicts). Is this a feature that has been implemented using Git or Hg, as far as anyone knows?

    How can I implement a vtable COM interface in java? In the old days, I'd use the Microsft JVM, which had built in java-COM interop. What's the equivalent for a modern JRE? Answers to a similar SO question proposed JACOB. I've looked at JACOB, but that is based on IDispatch, and is aimed at controlling Automation serers. The COM interfaces I need are custom vtable (extend IUnknown), e.g. IPersistStream, IOleWindow, IContextMenu etc. For my use case, I could implement all the COM specifics in JNI, and have the JNI layer call corresponding interfaces in java. But I'm hoping for a less painful solution. It's for an open source project, so open source alternatives are preferred.

  • Programatically enable / disable multitouch finger input?

    I have a multitoch-enabled tablet PC running Windows 7. However, when using the stylus pen and getting too far away from the display, I often accidently hit it with my fingers which causes unwanted mouse-clicks. The solution is navigating to "Control Panel - Pen- and Finger Input - Finger Input" and deactivate the checkbox "Use the finger as an input device" (all titles translated so they might be different on an English windows). Now I am wondering whether I can do this programatically, too, so I would be able to write a little tray app for this. I tried using Process Monitor to find out registry keys, however, I did not find one which really shows the same effect as the checkbox. Does anyone know how to access this property (without using UI-Automation)? Cheers winSharp93
