  • Ghost in the machine

    - by GrumpyOldDBA
Well it does relate to ghosts, in this case dbGhost, http://dbghost.com/    which is what this post is about. Ghost creates databases on the fly, something I personally don’t like too much, which it then compares to a “base” database to produce release scripts. ( The brief description ). As with all things sometimes all is not well and the server is left with a number of ghost created databases so I have to have a job to delete these every night before backups, it’s not difficult to code...(read more)

  • Best C++ containers for UI in Games.

    - by Vijayendra
I am writing some UI stuff for my games in C++. Basically its a very common problem, but I dont know the best answer yet. Suppose inside my UI Library I have a view class which renders 2D/3D scene. This view can contain many subviews. I needs a container which allows me to iterate over these views fast and also insert/delete subviews. I am not sure which container is best for the job - list, vector or something else?

  • How to Create Network File Shares with No Passwords in Windows 8

    - by Taylor Gibb
We have all had to connect to a network share at some point only to have the authentication dialog pop up. There are many ways around it, for example mapping a network drive, but if you have a lot of users connecting to copy some files you may want to disable the password dialog instead of distributing your password. • Compiz crashes after login

    - by T.Kijas
after I log-in into Unity, compiz effects are disabled and it says compiz crashes. Restart of them usually works, but not every time. After restart of compiz, compiz works without problems, every effect is OK. I tried latest NVIDIA drivers from xorg-edgers, but situation is the same. I tried to delete folder with compiz settings, but it hasn't helped. I use two LCDs, but with only one enabled, the situation is the same. Thank you for suggestions.

  • Performing a clean database build with MSBuild part 2

    - by Robert May
In part 1, I showed a complicated mechanism for performing a clean database build. There’s an easier way.  The easier way is to use the msbuild extension tasks out on codeplex.  While you’ll still need to forcibly take the database offline (ALTER DATABASE [mydb] SET OFFLINE WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE), the other msbuild tasks more easily allow you to create and delete the database.  Eventually, I’ll post an example. • Null Or Empty Coalescing

In my last blog post, I wrote about the proper way to check for empty enumerations and proposed an IsNullOrEmpty method for collections which sparked a lot of discussion. This post covers a similar issue, but from a different angle. A very long time ago, I wrote about my love for the null coalescing operator. However, over time, Ive found it to be not quite as useful as it could be when dealing with strings. For example, heres the code I might want to write: public static void DoSomething(string...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Redirecting none existing pages to the main page? [closed]

    - by Asaf
Possible Duplicate: SEO: ecommerce item deleted by user, 301 rediret to HOME PAGE or 404 not found? Hello, I have an online shop, now I got some products that I want to delete, however I am aware that some of them are indexed and/or marked as bookmarks for some people. Now I was wondering, what would be the best practice SEO-wise, to do a 301 redirect to the main page if anyone try to access those pages, or a 404 and display something like "Page not Found" ? Perhaps something completely else..?

  • Should users be deleted after inactivity on a website?

    - by Hovaness Bartamian
When you have a social website or a website where you can register, would you eventually delete them after a certain time (after a year of inactivity) or would you rather keep their account records for ever? I know websites like Facebook have large amount of inactive, duplicated and fake accounts. So I'm wondering if after two years of inactivity it would be alright to send the account a warning email of deletion unless they log in. Just thinking of a clean and efficient database management or any implications this may cause to new potential users.

  • Is it bad practice to use <?= tag in PHP

    - by marco-fiset
I've come across this PHP tag <?= ?> recently and I am reluctant to use it, but it itches so hard that I wanted to have your take on it. I know it is bad practice to use short tags <? ?> and that we should use full tags <?php ?> instead, but what about this one : <?= ?>? It would save some typing and it would be better for code readability, IMO. So instead of this: <input name="someVar" value="<?php echo $someVar; ?>"> I could write it like this, which is cleaner : <input name="someVar" value="<?= $someVar ?>"> Is using this operator frowned upon?

  • Introduction to JBatch

    - by reza_rahman
It seems batch processing is moving more and more into the realm of the Java developer. In recognition of this fact, JBatch (aka Java Batch, JSR 352, Batch Applications for the Java Platform) was added to Java EE 7. In a recent article JBatch specification lead Chris Vignola of IBM provides a high level overview of the API. He discusses the core concepts/motivation, the Job Specification Language, the reader-processor-writer pattern, job operator, job repository, chunking, packaging, partitions, split/flow and the like. You can also check out the official specification yourself or try things out with the newly released Java EE 7 SDK.

  • SEO Question - allintitle with or without quotes

    - by Aaron
I'm trying to learn more about implementing basic SEO strategies and have been spending a lot of time refining my keywords using Google Analytics combined with manually checking them using Google's allintitle operator. However, I'm unclear on whether I should be using quotes with my allintitles. Example: allintitle: seo tips and tricks for beginners 191 results allintitle: "seo tips and tricks for beginners" 70 results My thought is that it would be more accurate to use it without quotes because that way you get a more well rounded idea of all those you are competing with. So, my question is does Google give more weight to exact matches in the title tag or does that not really matter? If someone searched for: seo tips and tricks for beginners, would they be more likely to see the ones that have that exact phrase in their title tag or does that not have any impact?

  • How can I add a new user as sudoer using the command line?

    - by David B
After I add a user using adduser, I can't see it via System->Administration->Users and Groups unless I logout then login again. Is that normal? Also, can I set a newly added user as a sudoer or do I have to change that only after adding it? How can I do that via the shell? Finally, can I delete the original user that was created upon initial installation of ubuntu, or is this user somehow 'special'?

  • What are the differences between programming languages? [closed]

    - by Omega
Once upon a time, I heard from someone the only difference between programming languages is the syntax I wanted to deny it - to say that there are other fundamental aspects that truly set a language apart from others than just syntax. But I couldn't... So, can you? Whenever I search Google for something like "differences between programming languages", the results tend to be debates between two specific languages (I'd like something more general) - however, some of the aspects that people seemed to debate the most were: Object-Oriented Method/Operator overloading (I actually see this rather related to syntax) Garbage-Collection (While it seems like a good difference, for some reason it doesn't seem that "fundamental") What important aspects other than syntax can you think of?

  • =~ (equal-sign tilde) and m" ... " in .htaccess directive

    - by Lèse majesté
I saw this bit of code on an old forum post: SSLRequire %{HTTP_HOST} =~ m"\.secure\.powweb\.com" And I was just wondering what the =~ and m" ... " meant. I've been searching online and in the Apache documentation for any mention of the equal-sign tilde operator, but I've found no mention of it. I know that some directives can take a tilde to use a regular expression, but I've never seen the m" ... " form used before. What exactly is that m" ... " for? Where else would you see this form?
