• Why the R# Method Group Refactoring is Evil

  The refactoring I’m talking about is recommended by resharper when it sees a lambda that consists entirely of a method call that is passed the object that is the parameter to the lambda. Here is an example: public class IWishIWasAScriptingLanguage { public void SoIWouldntNeedAllThisJunk() { (new List<int> {1, 2, 3, 4}).Select(n => IsEven(n)); } private bool IsEven(int number) { return number%2 == 0; } } When resharper gets to n => IsEven(n) it underlines the lambda with a green squiggly telling me that the code can be replaced with a method group. If I apply the refactoring the code becomes: public class IWishIWasAScriptingLanguage { public void SoIWouldntNeedAllThisJunk() { (new List<int> {1, 2, 3, 4}).Select(IsEven); } private bool IsEven(int number) { return number%2 == 0; } } The method group syntax implies that the lambda’s parameter is the same as the IsEven method’s parameter. So a readable, explicit syntax has been replaced with an obfuscated, implicit syntax. That is why the method group refactoring is evil.

• Is it verified that iPad cannot create ad hoc wifi networks?

  Has anyone been able to verify that the iPad cannot create an ad hoc network? It has different radio hardware (the fact that it does 802.11n demonstrates this) than the iPhones, which I thought was the reason that the iPhones could not create WiFi networks. I know this was sort of answered elsewhere, but I wanted it to get proper attention with its own question and by more tag coverage. Jeff, your god of biscuits. ;)

• Android: Screen goes black behind interstitial ad while it slides in

  I show interstitial ads in my app, and I have defined a translation animation that is set to slide the ad in from right to left. The ad slides in just fine, but when the animation starts, the underlying Activity becomes completely black while the ad slides in. I would like to be able to see the underlying Activity and have the ad slide in over it. How do I keep the underlying Activity from being covered with black?

• processing of Group Policy failed only on 2008 Servers and Name Resolution failure on the current domain controller

  Spent last 3 months doing a upgrade from 2003 domain to a 2008R2 domain. our last DC was rebuilt (5 total) and brought up on line. After it was put on line we have some 2008 and 2008R2 servers (10 now) getting these errors in the event logs. ERRORS Description: The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows could not resolve the user name. This could be caused by one of more of the following: a) Name Resolution failure on the current domain controller. b) Active Directory Replication Latency (an account created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).\ Can duplicate this if we drop to command prompt and run GPUPDATE manually When our users attempt to do a \directory\shared access to shared drive on an affected server get this error.– “THERE ARE CURRETLY NO LOGON SERVER AVAIALBE TO SERICE THE LOGON REQUEST. This is only affecting the 2008 OS and it is a random set of abotu 10 servers out of some 30 with this OS. The Services on the machines are running Ok and login. Able to log in with domain/user to the consoles and via RDP. WE can log onto an affected machine, and can get to the \domainname\sysvol and can see the GPO's Have checked the replication topology of the domain and it states all servers can replicate with no errrors. We went back to the last DC, demoted it, removed DNS and then removed it from the domain and waited 24 hours and issue still persist. Picked one server, removed it from domain, reboooted, and added back to domain with no problems, but still has this behavior. bottom line is we have some servers that the domain will not let any UDP/client server apps or GPO's process ,but the tcp related items seeme to work fine, http, tcp calls, sql and oracle dbs's connect and process. Any inputs on some possible reasons for this issue and fixes. It is only affecting the 2008 servers on a 2008R2 domain.

  I'm doing a test deploy on a Lab with 3 VMs: TEST-DC: DC / DHCP / DNS / Root CA (Joined to TEST.AD Domain) TEST-CS: OCS Front End (Joined to TEST.AD Domain - IP: 10.0.128.1) TEST-EDGES: OCS Edge Server (Joined to Workgroup: EDGE-WKG - Internal IP: 10.0.128.3, External IPs: 192.168.129.12 - Access Edge Server, 192.168.129.13 - Web Conferencing, 192.168.129.14 - A/V) I can login with the Communicator Client from within computers in the domain (using [email protected]) and even the Automatic Sign-In works as expected. Nevertheless, I cannot login neither from within machines in the domain nor from outside the domain using [email protected]. I'm pretty sure it is a DNS related issue, so I'm including below a list of the entries. DNS Entries on TEST-DC: Forward Lookup Zones TEST.AD sip.test.ad (Host A). • LdapErr: DSID-0C0903AA, data 52e: authenticating against AD '08 with pam_ldap

  I have full admin access to the AD '08 server I'm trying to authenticate towards. The error code means invalid credentials, but I wish this was as simple as me typing in the wrong password. First of all, I have a working Apache mod_ldap configuration against the same domain. AuthType basic AuthName "MYDOMAIN" AuthBasicProvider ldap AuthLDAPUrl "ldap://10.220.100.10/OU=Companies,MYCOMPANY,DC=southit,DC=inet?sAMAccountName?sub?(objectClass=user)" AuthLDAPBindDN svc_webaccess_auth AuthLDAPBindPassword mySvcWebAccessPassword Require ldap-group CN=Service_WebAccess,OU=Groups,OU=MYCOMPANY,DC=southit,DC=inet I'm showing this because it works without the use of any Kerberos, as so many other guides out there recommend for system authentication to AD. Now I want to translate this into pam_ldap.conf for use with OpenSSH. The /etc/pam.d/common-auth part is simple. auth sufficient pam_ldap.so debug This line is processed before any other. I believe the real issue is configuring pam_ldap.conf. host 10.220.100.10 base OU=Companies,MYCOMPANY,DC=southit,DC=inet ldap_version 3 binddn svc_webaccess_auth bindpw mySvcWebAccessPassword scope sub timelimit 30 pam_filter objectclass=User nss_map_attribute uid sAMAccountName pam_login_attribute sAMAccountName pam_password ad Now I've been monitoring ldap traffic on the AD host using wireshark. I've captured a successful session from Apache's mod_ldap and compared it to a failed session from pam_ldap. The first bindrequest is a success using the svc_webaccess_auth account, the searchrequest is a success and returns a result of 1. The last bindrequest using my user is a failure and returns the above error code. Everything looks identical except for this one line in the filter for the searchrequest, here showing mod_ldap. Filter: (&(objectClass=user)(sAMAccountName=ivasta)) The second one is pam_ldap. Filter: (&(&(objectclass=User)(objectclass=User))(sAMAccountName=ivasta)) My user is named ivasta. However, the searchrequest does not return failure, it does return 1 result. I've also tried this with ldapsearch on the cli. It's the bindrequest that follows the searchrequest that fails with the above error code 52e. Here is the failure message of the final bindrequest. resultcode: invalidcredentials (49) 80090308: LdapErr: DSID-0C0903AA, comment: AcceptSecurityContext error, data 52e, v1772 This should mean invalid password but I've tried with other users and with very simple passwords. Does anyone recognize this from their own struggles with pam_ldap and AD? Edit: Worth noting is that I've also tried pam_password crypt, and pam_filter sAMAccountName=User because this worked when using ldapsearch. ldapsearch -LLL -h 10.220.100.10 -x -b "ou=Users,ou=mycompany,dc=southit,dc=inet" -v -s sub -D svc_webaccess_auth -W '(sAMAccountName=ivasta)' This works using the svc_webaccess_auth account password. This account has scan access to that OU for use with apache's mod_ldap.

• A quick tip for those working with the Windows Phone 7 AD SDK.

  One thing that I’ve noticed in several apps in the Windows Phone 7 marketplace is the ad chopping off on the right hand side. I decided that my next Windows Phone 7 app will be ad supported so why not sign up for the Advertising SDK and investigate this issue. *Note: If you want to see this in an actual app then download the free app called “Road Rage”. So here is an example of what I am talking about: You will notice that the right hand side of the AD is chopped off using the default ad banner. You can see the border on the left hand side clearly. So, what exactly is going on? Let’s take a look at this in the designer. From this image we can see it clearer, the margin of the grid that the ad is contained in needs to be removed. By default, the ContentPanel in a Windows Phone Page has a margin already set on it. See below for an example of this: <!--ContentPanel - place additional content here--> <Grid x:Name="ContentPanel" Grid.Row="1" Margin="12,0,12,0"> </Grid> If you simply remove that margin then your ad will display properly as shown below. It’s strange that I’ve seen this in multiple WP7 applications in the marketplace. If you are trying to make money off Ads, you would probably want to make sure the full ad is displayed.   So Ubuntu 12.04, Likewise latest from the beyondtrust website. Joins domain fine. Gets proper information from lw-get-status. Can use lw-find-user-by-name to retrieve/locate users. Can use lw-enum-users to get all users. The errors obviously are correct, the file /lib/security/pam_winbind.so does not exist. If its a dependancy/required, surely it should be part of the package? I've installed/reinstalled, I've used the downloaded package from the beyondtrust website, i've used the repository, nothing seems to work, every method of installing this application generates the same errors for me. UPDATE : Hrmm, I thought likewise didn't use native winbind but its own modules. Installing winbind from apt-get uninstalls pbis-open (likewise) and generates failures when installing if pbis-open is installed first. Uninstalled winbind, reinstalled pbis-open, same issue as above. The file pam_winbind.so does not exist in that location. Setting up pbis-open-legacy (7.0.1.918) ... Installing Packages was successful This computer is joined to DOMAIN.LOCAL New libraries and configurations have been installed for PAM and NSS. Clearly it thinks it has installed it, but it hasn't. It may be a legacy issue with the previous attempt to configure domain integration manually with winbind. Does anyone have a working likewise-open installation and does the /etc/nsswitch.conf include references to winbind? Or do the /etc/pam.d/common-account or /etc/pam.d/common-password reference pam_winbind.so? I'm unsure if those entries are just legacy or setup by likewise. UPDATE 2 : Complete reinstall of OS fixed it and it worked seamlessly, like it was meant to and those 2 PAM files did NOT include entries for pam_winbind.so, so that was the underlying problem. • Nokia 5800 v50, getting "Invalid server name" with ad-hoc wlan with Windows 7

  After upgrading to v50 firmware in my Nokia 5800 xpress music phone. I am not able to connect to ad-hoc wlan network in my laptop(Windows 7 OS). I have a dialup internet connection and created wireless ad-hoc network to access the internet in my phone. But I am getting "invalid server name" in the phone and my wireless network access type in Windows 7 shows "no internet access". I am able to connect to wlan infrastructure network using 5800 in my office. So my phone is working with wlan and I m able to access internet on it. BUT The problem is "dial up with ICS enabled" and "AD-HOC wlan network" in Windows 7. Can anyone give some solution on it. Or can you provide a guide/tutorial to connect 5800 with adhoc network and dialup internet in Windows 7. System: Windows 7 Dial up internet connection with ICS enabled. Ad-Hoc wireless network with WEP Nokia 5800 Xpress Music phone Note: I have read other posts also and tried their solutions but didn't worked for me. the first solution is to bridge the network and access it. but how can I bridge the dialup and wlan netwok? second solution is manually configure IP and DNS addresses in phone. But what should I add as IP and DNS as my dial up and adhoc network have automatic addresses.

Advise?

• NIS user not being added to NIS group

  I have set up a NIS server and several NIS clients. I have a user and a group on the NIS server like so: /etc/passwd: myself:x:5000:5000:,,,:/home/myself:/bin/bash /etc/group: fishy:x:3001:otheruser,etc,myself,moreppl I imported the users and groups on the NIS client by adding +:::::: to /etc/passwd and +::: to /etc/group. I can log in to the NIS client, but when I run groups, fishy is not listed. But getent group fishy shows that it was imported correctly and lists me as a member. And if I do sudo su - myself, then suddenly groups says I am in the group! I also had nscd installed, and the groups worked correctly for a while. It seemed like after being logged in for a while, I would silently be dropped out of the group. If I restarted nscd and logged in again, then the groups worked correctly...for a while. There are no UID or GID conflicts with local users or groups. Update: Contents of /etc/nsswitch.conf: passwd: compat group: compat shadow: compat hosts: files nis dns networks: files protocols: db files services: db files ethers: db files rpc: db files netgroup: nis aliases: nis files

  A very common question I often receive - Do we have SQL Server User Group in Bangalore? Yes! SQL Bangalore – we had very first meeting on Nov 24, 2012 and very soon we are going to have another User Group meeting. The goal is to keep up a monthly rhythm of User Group meeting. If you are in Bangalore area please join the Facebook page and you will keep on getting regular update about SQL Server. In the very first meeting we have five 30 minute session and had a fantastic time. We had the best of the best speakers presenting all the five sessions. The event was inaugurated by Vinod Kumar M by presenting on T-SQL Pitfalls. His excellent and eye-opening session was followed by Manas Dash. He enlightened everybody with functions introduced in SQL Server 2012. We had a surprise guest from Mumbai – Raj Chaodhary. If you know him he has a very interesting way to present sessions and he presented on SQL Joins. His hard to follow act was followed by Sudeepta who presented on Contained Database. This subject is quite entertaining and interesting. My session was last in order and I was eagerly waiting to present. I had decided to do something new this time so I had created around 52 slides and two demos. I was committed to go over all the 52 slides and both of the demos in 25 minutes of the time. I had interesting story as well. Though, I was a bit nervous I was able to go over a complete slide deck and demo in 25 minutes of the time I had. We also were very fortunate to have international guest Lynn Langit from USA present at the event as well. She presented an overview of the Big Data in very little time – something not everyone can do it efficiently. We are very thankful to our sponsor Pluralsight for awarding USD 300 worth Annual Subscription. It was the most awaited moment of the day. • OAGi Architecture Council OAGIS Ten Work Group Completes first round review of Concepts for OAGIS Te

  Today the OAGi Architecture Council OAGIS Ten Work group completed the first level review of concepts for existing content for OAGIS Ten. This is one of the first milestones for OAGIS Ten. In doing this the concepts of key objects (the Nouns) have been identified along with the key context for their use. While OAGIS Ten remains a work-in-process the work group shows progress. Going forward the other councils will provide additional input to these and there own concepts and the contexts for each. Additionally, sub groups will focus on concepts for given domains. • Upcoming User Group Events in 2011

  At a recent customer event, someone asked me if Oracle had any plans to re-create the Hyperion Solutions Conference.  Unfortunately the answer is no.  With so many different product lines it would be challenging and costly for Oracle to run separate user conferences for every product line, and it would create too many events for customers with multiple products to attend.  So Oracle Open World is the company's main event for showcasing what's new and what's coming across all product lines.  If customers find Oracle OpenWorld too overwhelming or if the timing is bad, there are a number of other conferences, which are run by Oracle user groups and include a number of sessions focused on Oracle Hyperion EPM and BI products.  Here's a sneak preview of what's coming up for conferences in 2011 where you can network with other Hyperion users and learn what's new and what's coming in our products.
