• How do you deal with information overload?

  There are so many (good) programming blogs out there. Some of them are consistent in what they post - as in they stick to programming topics. Some of them occasionally post on other unrelated topics. Also, not every programming post might be relevant to me. I might have read one good post once, and not wishing to miss any future good ones - subscribed to the blog. Subscribing to too many blog feeds usually leads to just skimming through all of them (which takes time as well). Another option might be to subscribe to aggregators, like Hacker News - but that too has a huge rate of link accumulation. How do you manage if you wish to keep up with the programming blogosphere and still maintain a good signal to noise ratio?

• Why are most websites optimized for viewing in portrait mode?

  I simply cannot figure this out. Almost all monitors have an aspect ratio where width is much bigger than the height and yet almost all websites are designed exactly for the other way round? I am not really a web developer and am just experimenting stuff at the moment but this madness baffles me!!! Edit: The point is not that I would like to limit the height of a website.   I always wanted to use randomly generated strings for my resources' IDs, so I could have shorter URLs like this: /user/4jz0k1 But I never did, because I was worried about the random string generation creating actual words, eg: /user/f*cker. This brings two problems: it might be confusing or even offensive for users, and it could mess with the SEO too. Then I thought all I had to do was to set up a fixed pattern like adding a number every 2 letters. I was very happy with my 'generate_safe_uuid' method, but then I realized it was only better for SEO, and worse for users, because it increased the ratio of actual words being generated, eg: /user/g4yd1ck5 Now I'm thinking I could create a method 'replace_numbers_with_letters', and check that it haven't formed any words against a dictionary or something. Any other ideas? ps. As I write this, I also realized that checking for words in more than one language (eg: english and french, spanish, etc) would be a mess, and I'm starting to love numbers-only IDs again.

• Problem with the screen resolution on 12.04

  I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop. The screen resolution is stuck in 1024x768. The screen is made for 1280x800. When I run xrandr I get: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 61.0* 800x600 61.0 1280x800 isn't offered and I get gamma size error. I was going to look into the Xorg.conf file but I couldn't locate it. 1280x800 was displayed in Windows 7 and I think it is being displayed in Grub before Ubuntu starts also. Here are some details about my computer: CPU: Intel atom D2500 1.86GHz Chipset: Intel 945GSE+ICH7M LCD: 14" TFT 16:9 Resolution ratio: 1280*800 Video Card: Intel integrated GMA950 Does anyone know how to fix this?

  We have a large team of developers and testers. The ratio is one tester for every one developer. We have full bug tracking and reporting systems in place. We have test plans in place. Every change to the product, the testing team is involved in the design of the feature and are included in the development process as much as possible. We build in small iterative blocks, using scrum methodology and every scrum they are included in, including the grooming sessions etc. But every release of the product, they miss even the most simple and obvious defects. How can we improve this?

• Virtualbox, How do I change guest (precise) resolution to 16:9 (1920x1080) instead of default 4:3?

  There are many questions about resolution issues on askubuntu but no question/solution seems to solve my issue. I've a 12.04/precise host system and installed Ubuntu 12.04/precise as guest system as well. After installation I had the option of selecting 1024x768 (4:3) and 800x600 (4:3) as resolution in display settings. After installing guest additions the options 1280x960 (4:3) and 1440x1050 (4:3) was added to the list. Now 4 in total all having the 4:3 ratio. I then activated full screen mode (host+f) and got the guest running in native 1920x1200 (16:10) for my screen. After deactivating full screen two more options had been added to the resolutions dropdown list, 1920x1200 (16:10) and 1600x1200 (4:3). I want to run the guest in 1920x1080 (16:9) so I can easily record screencasts in "full-hd". Last time I had this problem the solution was to run "VBoxManage controlvm nameofyourVM setvideomodehint width height colordepth" command from the host but now I want to know if there is any easier way to solve this?

  I am working on a photo sharing social platform like Flickr, Photobucket. To start off with I have half a million photos as of now. I want to convert all of these into a single format, compression ratio and use it as an original image. I will be storing original image, re-sized image according to layout and a thumbnail. I have started off with ruby, didn't find supporting libraries. I am considering python as it has a good image processing library and instagram is using it. I want some advise about how the image has to be processed while uploading, efficient way of storage whether database or a file system, image compressions, and precautions to be taken. I would be having profile pictures, do I need store them separately or along with the images? If I want to store the images on a file system, which file system should I use and also should I store the url or should I use any intermediate key value store like redis?

• What Does It Usually Mean for a Feature to be "Supported"?

  I'm currently working some testing for a particular area of an application. I had to write some automated tests for a particular feature but due to the circumstances, this was not easy to do. When I asked one of the other testers about it, he mentioned that the same features exist in a sister application our company produces but isn't documented anywhere (end-user documentation or otherwise). He also said that the feature doesn't typically get tested at all in the sister application and isn't usually tested in the application I work on. Apparently this feature isn't heavily used but removing it would require a fair bit of work so the benefit-cost ratio doesn't work out. All of this has left me with some questions. Other than "The documentation says so" or "We told the client it is", what usually makes a feature "supported" versus an unsupported feature?

• LIbgdx and android scaling

  Following my previous question, I decided to migrate my andengine game to libdgx to have the desktop option. The game assets were planned, at first, to use a 1080x600 resolution and I raised that to 1200x800 which is native for many tablets and would look better on monitors. I followed this blog aproach regarding aspect ratio, which worked nicely on the desktop version, but running the android version (on my smaller tablet), the background would still appear on the original size being cropped by the smaller screen size. How can I force the resize of the background (or for what matter, of everything) on android to fit the screen?

  So I have created a video website which has thousands of videos and thousands of videos get added to it on a daily basis. Here is my problem :- I have created a website which basically loads the skeleton in html and puts all the content through javascript and Ajax. The problem is search engines aren't going anywhere except for the home page. Is there a way say in robots.txt where i give a link to a single html which has links to all these videos ? I agree my site is not accessible for a non-javascript user but stats show that this ratio is very low ( 0.2 % ). Is there a way I can still keep the complete AJAX website and still get each individual videos listed on google ?

The official name for the display plugins (ie, "Download Flash Now!") A general reference to the entire technology stack In terms of the editor, it's a linear timeline based editor, best used for animations with complex interactivity. • I cannot grok MVC, what it is, and what it is not?

  I cannot grok what MVC is, what mindset or programming model should I acquire so MVC stuff can instantly "lightbulb" on my head? If not instantly, what simple programs/projects should I try to do first so I can apply the neat things MVC brings to programming. OOP is intuitive and easier, object is all around us, and the benefits of code reuse using OOP-paradigm instantly click to anyone. You can probably talk to anybody about OOP in a few minutes and lecture some examples and they would get it. While OOP somehow raise the intuitiveness aspect of programming, MVC seems to do the opposite. I'm getting negative thoughts that some future employers(or even clients) would look down upon me for not using MVC technology. Though I probably get the skinnable aspect of MVC, but when I try to apply it to my own project, I don't know where to start. And also some programmers even have diverging views on how to accomplish MVC properly. Take this for instance from Jeff's post about MVC: The view is simply how you lay the data out, how it is displayed. If you want a subset of some data, for example, my opinion is that is a responsibility of the model. So maybe some programmers use MVC, but they somehow inadvertently use the View or the Controller to extract a subset of data. Why we can't have a definitive definition of what and how to accomplish MVC properly? And also, when I search for MVC .NET programs, most of it applies to web programs, not desktop apps, this intrigue me further. My guess is, this is most advantageous to web apps, there's not much problem about intermixed view(html) and controller(program code) in desktop apps.

• Apache CXF REST Services w/ Spring AOP

  I'm trying to get Apache CXF JAX-RS services working with Spring AOP. I've created a simple logging class: public class AOPLogger{ public void logBefore(){ System.out.println("Logging Before!"); } } My Spring configuration (beans.xml): <aop:config> <aop:aspect id="aopLogger" ref="test.aop.AOPLogger"> <aop:before method="logBefore" pointcut="execution(* test.rest.RestService(..))"/> </aop:aspect> </aop:config> <bean id="aopLogger" class="test.aop.AOPLogger"/> I always get an NPE in RestService when a call is made to a Method getServletRequest(), which has: return messageContext.getHttpServletRequest(); If I remove the aop configuration or comment it out from my beans.xml, everything works fine. All of my actual Rest services extend test.rest.RestService (which is a class) and call getServletRequest(). I'm just trying to just get AOP up and running based off of the example in the CXF JAX-RS documentation. Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

• UIImageView is resizing

  I have an issue with uiimageviews resizing at run time. On one view I have more than a dozen uiimageviews contained within a uiscrollview. The images are assigned at design time. The uiimageview's are all the same size. The mode is set to Aspect Fill for all uiimageviews. At run time the images appear correctly in the view. On a second view I have only 9 uiimageviews. These uiimageviews will display up to nine of the images selected from the first view. There are three images across and three images down. The uiimageview at design time is the same size as on the first view. The uiimageview image is assigned an image that is loaded into an array. All the uiimageviews are sized the same and they also have the mode set to Aspect Fill. The images are assigned at run time using image1.image = xxx. Where xxx is an image stored in an array. However, on this second view, the images are not all the same size. The height of the image changes dynamically. The same image displayed in a different uiimageview on the view will be different sizes. It is the height of the uiimageview that changes. In some cases the image will fill the uiimageview differently. It is like the mode changes dynamically. I've tried using different modes and nothing changes. Any ideas on what is happening?

• Opengl: fit a quad to screen, given the value of Z.

  Short Version of the question: I will put a quad. I know the width and height of the screen in window coordinates, i know the Z-coordinates of the quad in 3D. I know the FOVY, I know the aspect. The quad will be put along Z-axis, My camera doesn't move (placed at 0, 0, 0). I want to find out the width and height of the quad IN 3D COORDINATES that will fit exactly onto my screen. Long Version of the question: I would like to put a quad along the Z-axis at the specified offset Z, I would like to find out the width and height of the quad that will exactly fill the entire screen. I used to have a post on gamedev.net that uses a formula similar to the following: *dist = Z * tan ( FOV / 2 )* Now I can never find the post! Though it's similar, it is still different, because I remembered in that working formula, they do make use of screenWidth and screenHeight, which are the width and height of the screen in window coordinates. I am not really familiar with concepts like frustum, fov and aspect so that's why I can't work out the formula on my own. Besides, I am sure I don't need gluUnproject (I tried it, but the results are way off). It's not some gl calls, it's just a math formula that can find out the width and height in 3D space that can fill the entire screen, IF Z offset, width in window coordinates, and height in window coordinates, are known. • Spring aop multiple pointcuts & advice but only the last one is working

  I have created two Spring AOP pointcuts that are completely separate and will be woven in for different parts of the system. The pointcuts are used in two different around advices, these around-advices will point to the same Java method. How the xml-file looks: <aop:config> <aop:pointcut expression="execution(......)" id="pointcutOne" /> <aop:pointcut expression="execution(.....)" id="pointcurTwo" /> <aop:aspect id="..." ref="springBean"> <aop:around pointcut-ref="pointcutOne" method="commonMethod" /> <aop:aroung pointcut-ref="pointcutTwo" method="commonMethod" /> </aop:aspect> </aop:config> The problem is that only the last pointcut works (if I change the order "pointcutOne" works because it is last). I have gotten it to work by creating one big pointcut, but I would like to have them separate. Any suggestions to why only one of the pointcuts works at a time?

  I am trying to rotate my camera using a Quaternion in libGDX. I have a Quaternion created and being manipulated but I have no idea how to apply it to the camera, everything I've tried hasn't moved the camera at all. • What is the best approach to embed mp4 for the iPhone without using JavaScript?

  I am trying to troubleshoot this code and am running into a dead-end, so I thought I would ask my first question here. I have three questions: 1) What is the best approach to embed an mp4 for an iPhone specific view, preferably without using Javascript? 2) Are there any preferred practices to debug code on an iPhone? 3) Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my specific code below? I should mention upfront that the variable $fileName does indeed contain the correct info, I've just omitted that portion of the code. Also, the poster image does flicker for a brief moment before I receive the greyed out, broken QuickTime image so that is an indication that this is partially working. • How to ask questions to an obstructionist?

  This is not related to my other recently posted question about "working with a star developer". In a similar vein, how do you work with someone who will only answer the specific question that you ask. I worked with someone who, when you asked a question on a specific aspect of the system, would give you the answer just related to the specific bit you'd asked about. For example, when processing radar messages I'd ask about an aspect of message number RJ546 and he would answer just about that specific part of RJ546. He wouldn't mention anything about the other freaky parts of the message, or mention any related aspects of the other messages. Then you'd go off and work on the processing and all of a sudden all this other freakiness would pop up. What's a good technique when working with this type of person? BTW I later found out that the person who I'd come in to replace had quit because he got sick and tired of having these surprises pop up due to the lack of information provided by this person. Edit: I forgot to add that the person was deliberately obstructionist and believed that job security came from hoarded knowledge not being disseminated.
