• What are some of the practical cons to using ASMX webservices?

  Hello, at my workplace we are about to start a big project. My boss (a programmer, this is a startup) wishes to use ASMX webservices for this purpose. I do not want to start off a new program using deprecated technology and would like to show him this. I dislike WCF at this moment because it has such an extreme learning curve, but I'd rather learn it than use an unsupported technology. The problem I'm having is that I can not find any practical list of cons and downfalls when compared to WCF so that I can convince my boss to not use them. And saying "it's not as powerful" is not an adequate explanation. What exactly can it not do that we may need it to do for a webservice that is not meant to be shared externally? (as in, we don't support third-parties using our webservices unless they are using one of our clients. )

  I'm working on comparison for several different methods of implementing (real or fake) multithreading in JavaScript. As far as I know only webworkers and Google Gears WorkerPool can give you real threads (ie. spread across multiple processors with real parallel execution). I've found the following methods: switch between tasks using yield() use setInterval() (or other non-blocking function) with threads waiting one for another use Google Gears WorkerPool threads (with plugin) use html5 web workers I read related questions and found several variations of the above methods, but most of those questions are old, so there might be a few new ideas. I'm wondering - how else can you achieve multithreading in JavaScript? Any other important methods? UPDATE: As pointed out in comments what I really meant was concurrency. UPDATE 2: I found information that Silverlight + JScript supports multithreading, but I'm unable to verify this. • svn commit is hung at start of commit

  I'm commiting a large changeset, including a large binary file (180 MB) over a slow VPN connection. It looks for all the world like it is stalled. How can I diagnose where it is stuck? The output is: $ svn commit -m "My commit message" Connecting to deprecated signal QDBusConnectionInterface::serviceOwnerChanged(QString,QString,QString)` Local subversion is 1.6.9 on Linux, KDE 4.3, and svn status shows ML . L ws M ws/manage.py L ws/locales L ws/locales/ja_JP L ws/locales/ja_JP/LC_MESSAGES The process isn't using much of any resources. The server is Linux, served by Apache and mod_dav_svn, same subversion 1.6.9. I can't see any process that is handling the commit.

• How to indefinitely pause a thread in Java and later resume it?

  Maybe this question has been asked many times before, but I never found a satisfying answer. The problem: I have to simulate a process scheduler, using the round robin strategy. I'm using threads to simulate processes and multiprogramming; everything works fine with the JVM managing the threads. But the thing is that now I want to have control of all the threads so that I can run each thread alone by a certain quantum (or time), just like real OS processes schedulers. What I'm thinking to do: I want have a list of all threads, as I iterate the list I want to execute each thread for their corresponding quantum, but as soon the time's up I want to pause that thread indefinitely until all threads in the list are executed and then when I reach the same thread again resume it and so on. The question: So is their a way, without using deprecated methods stop(), suspend(), or resume(), to have this control over threads?

• Yet another php ereg fix

  I have a small chunk of coding I need to take from ereg to preg_match. Here is the code. function be_file_list($d, $x) { foreach (array_diff(scandir($d), array('.', '..')) as $f) { if (is_file($d . '/' . $f) && (($x) ? ereg($x.'$',$f) : 1)) { $l[] = $f; } } return $l; } This code works as expected even if it doesn't look too pretty (source: http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.scandir.php) but as ereg is deprecated, I would really like to make it preg_match, or something like that. I have been messing with this all afternoon and the PC is about to go out the window. I would have thought that preg_match("/"$x.'$',$f"/") would have worked but no dice. Any help would be great. • Silverlight 4 NewBie Question

  I am watching a video from Silverlight.net website about DataForm. There is no source code download, so I am typing in the code as I watch the video. Unfortunately I can't replicate what is shown in the video. there are several issues. I am going to list out only the first 2 1) The presenter shows a simple class inside DataForm that has a icon at the very top of the data form that upon clicking it makes the DataForm editable and a save button appears at the bottom. I did'nt get the same thing when I ran my code against Silverlight 4 or Silverlight 3 2) Than he goes on to show that if you mark your class [Bindable(false)] you shouldn't see anything in your page. I did that but my form still shows all the properties I stopped after these 2 issues. If the features being talked about in this video were deprecated in the final release than this video should have been taken off the site. can anyone help me with this??

• How do you do dynamic script evaluation in C#?

  What is the state of dynamic code evaluation in C#? For a very advanced feature of an app I'm working on, I'd like the users to be able to enter a line of C# code that should evaluate to a boolean. Something like: DateTime.Now.Hours > 12 && DateTime.Now.Hours < 14 I want to dynamically eval this string and capture the result as a boolean. I tried Microsoft.JScript.Eval.JScriptEvaluate, and this worked, but it's technically deprecated and it only works with Javascript (not ideal, but workable). Additionally, I'd like to be able to push objects into the script engine so that they can be used in the evaluation. Some resources I find mentioned dynamically compiling assemblies, but this is more overhead than I think I want to deal with. So, what is the state of dynamic script evaluation in C#? Is it possible, or am I out of luck?

  Hi guys, I'm just learning some basic programming in Objective C and Cocoa. I'm trying to get some data from NSTableView. Based on what I read in one tutorial, I wrote this: NSArray * items = [[itemsTableView selectedRowEnumerator] allObjects]; But then I learned that selectedRowEnumerator was deprecated already in 10.3 Panther and that I should use selectedRowIndexes. The problem is, I didn't find how to actually use the returned NSIndexSet to achieve the same result as with code written above. So, If anyone could give me a tip, I would be very grateful. Thanks.

• Can managed and unmanaged C++/MFC be mixed in one dll?

  Previously we had software in MFC (VC6), VB6 and C# applications that needed to call the same engine written in C++ (and MFC). The engine required C++ for speed. At the time we decided to use COM as the interface because all three could use it with the least issues in marshalling, etc. Our MFC application is now deprecated and we have recently decided to dump VB6, so what we've got left is C#. We can just leave the COM engine as-is, but it would be nice to get away from COM registration, etc., and have a managed interface to work with. COM registration occasionally causes support issues if there is something wrong with the person's machine. Is it possible to have a dll with the existing unmanaged C++/MFC, and a .NET front end interface?

  Hi, I have a Freemarker template which contains a bunch of placeholders for which values are supplied when the template is processed. I want to conditionally include part of the template if the userName variable is supplied, something like: [#if_exists userName] Hi ${userName}, How are you? [/#if_exists] However, the FreeMarker manual seems to indicate that if_exists is deprecated, but I can't find another way to achieve this. Of course, I could simple providing an additional boolean variable isUserName and use that like this: [#if isUserName] Hi ${userName}, How are you? [/#if] But if there's a way of checking whether userName exists then I can avoid adding this extra variable. Cheers, Don

They can't access actions with admin prefix.   I am using hibernate 3.6.7 I am using annotated classes. My classes were annotated with org.hibernate.annotations.Entity. Added the classes to configuration using configuration.addAnnotatedClass() method. Hibernate does not seem to pick it up. Stuff works fine if I use the standard jpa Entity annotation. What am I missing? I know that the classes have been deprecated in the Hibernate 4.x releases with the advent of newer annotations to configure stuff like dynamic-insert and dynamic-updates. I am not using any XML configuration file. I am setting up configuration with a properties file and using java apis.

• Where does complexity bloat from?

  Many of our design decisions are based on our gut feeling about how to avoid complexity and bloating. Some of our complexity-fears are true, we have plenty of painful experience on throwing away deprecated code. Other times we learn that some particular task isn't really that complex as we though it to be. We notice for example that upkeeping 3000 lines of code in one file isn't that difficult... or that using special purpose "dirty flags" isn't really bad OO practice... or that in some cases it's more convenient to have 50 variables in one class that have 5 different classes with shared responsibilities... One friend has even stated that adding functions to the program isn't really adding complexity to your system. So, what do you think, where does bloated complexity creep from? Is it variable count, function count, code line count, code line count per function, or something else?

• Where is the default language data stored in OS 10.6

  From a shell in 10.4 or 10.5, I was able to do this: /usr/bin/defaults read NSGlobalDomain AppleLanguages To get the list of the language preference for that particular machine. This was done so that I could restore it back to that list after changing it with the 'defaults write' command to something else (in order to help automate l10n testing). Now, along comes OS 10.6, and AppleLanguages is nowhere in any of our defaults domains. I know that I can alter it for each running application by altering their specific property lists...but at the cost of more complexity. Also, some of the apps I have under test here are installer packages...and It's a real pain to change stuff (like the .plist I'd have to change here) in those without being somewhat destructive; that's why I chose to do it globally in the first place. Anyways, it'd be great if I could find where they stashed it now...or if they deprecated it (like a zillion other things in OS 10.6) completely.

  Ok So I haven't tried messing with the facebook PHP API for months.. it's gross. Since template bundles are apparently now defunct, how can I publish a story into my users news feed for their friends? I've also already requested permissions.   Short version: What's the best practice going forward for efficiently rendering large numbers of independent texture-mapped, lighted 2D/3D primitives (circles, rects, etc.) in OpenGL? For example: a typical particle system using billboarded quads/triangles, point sprites, or whatever other technique, with blending. Because after reading this thread on the messiness of OpenGL versioning/deprecation I'm starting to have my doubts. My specific question is not the ABCs of displaying primitives in OpenGL, but rather how to do so efficiently in post-deprecation (or pre-deprecation) OpenGL, in a way that's going to be compatible with a wide range of commodity hardware and in a way that's not going to break or itself get deprecated, five years down the line.   A servlet container "generally" create one instance of a servlet and different threads of the same instance to serve multiple requests. (I know this can be changed using deprecated SingleThreadModel and other features, but this is the usual way). I thought, the simple reason behind this is performance gain, as creating threads is better than creating instances. But it seems this is not the reason. On the other hand, creating instances have little advantage that developers never have to worry about thread safety. I am trying to understand the reason for this decision over the trade-off of thread-safety.

  I posted a question about a thread pattern today, and almost everyone suggested that I look into the ExecutorService. While I was looking into the ExecutorService, I think I am missing something. What happens if the service has a running or blocked threads, and someone calls ExecutorService.shutdown(). What happens to threads that are running or blocked? Does the ExecutorService wait for those threads to complete before it terminates? The reason I ask this is because a long time ago when I used to dabble in Java, they deprecated Thread.stop(), and I remember the right way of stopping a thread was to use sempahores and extend Thread when necessary: public void run () { while (!this.exit) { try { block(); //do something } catch (InterruptedException ie) { } } } public void stop () { this.exit = true; if (this.thread != null) { this.thread.interrupt(); this.thread = null; } } How does ExecutorService handle running threads?

  As programmers, we've all put together a really cool program or pieced together some hardware in an interesting way to solve a problem. Today I was thinking about those hacks and how some of them are deprecated by modern technology (for example, you no longer need to hack your Tivo to add a network port). In the software world, we take things like drag-and-drop on a web page for granted now, but not too long ago that was a pretty exciting hack as well. One of the neatest hardware hacks I've seen was done by a former coworker at a telecom company years ago. He had a small portable television in his office and he would watch it all day long while working. To get away with it, he wired a switch to the on/off that was activated via his foot under his desk. What's the coolest hardware or software hack you've personally seen or done? What hack are you working on right now?

Everything works fine except the fact that I have no idea how to set an expiration-time for the cookie? $.cookie('opt_visible', 'true'); the jquery-cookie documentation says: hoursToLive (DEPRECATED for expiresAt) NUMBER For how many hours should the cookie be valid? (Passing 0 means to delete the cookie at the end of the browser session--this is default. Negative values will delete the cookie, but you should use the del() method instead.) That's exactly what I'd like to have. The cookie should be available as long as i'm browsing the site. As soon as i close the window or browsertab, the cookie should be deleted. How can i implement this hoursToLive thingy to my mentioned line above? Thank you
