  • Mac OS & Iphone development

    I am a graphics designer. How long would it take to become fluent in Objective-c for Mac and/or iPhone app development, from no programming background? I want to quit my day job as a designer. I really don't wanna work anymore cause I don't want to have a boss. I can be a writer, or I can become a app developer. Developing mini applications & games sounds excellent to me. That's really what I want to do :) I'm a patient person and I will do whatever it takes to learn & become a good developer. Should I take any courses about app development, or can I learn on my own? Any ideas, tips?

  • Unable to boot Windows 7 after installing Ubuntu to MacBook with OS X & Windows 7 (bootcamp)

    I had Lion OSX partitioned with Windows 7 using BootCamp [on my MacBook]. I downloaded and installed Ubuntu last night and it went well. Until this morning when I tried to boot up Windows 7 and it took me to Ubuntu instead. I saw the windows 7 loader so I clicked on that. It brought me to a black screen with a white cursor in the top left. This is what windows usually looks like when it boots but this time it just stayed on the black screen. I also tried holding option and choosing the windows drive manually but it brought me back to Ubuntu. I think what happened was that I did not click on the Windows 7 loader when installing Ubuntu 12.04 last night. What can I do to fix this?

    IBM has announced May 1st, 2011 as the end of Support for Version 8 of the IBM XL C/C++ compiler currently used for Release 12 builds and patching. The target date of the switchover -- May 1st 2011 -- corresponds to when this older compiler will no longer be supported by IBM. Beginning on May 1st 2011, Oracle E-Business Suite patches for Release 12 (12.0, 12.1) on the IBM AIX on Power Systems platform will be built with Version 9 of the IBM XL C/C++ compiler.  Customers who plan to patch or upgrade their E-Business Suite R12 environments after May 1st, 2011 must meet all the new requirements prior to applying new patches or upgrades.Please review the documents below for all new requirements pertaining to the new runtime and utilities packages on IBM AIX on Power Systems.

  • Virtualising Windows 8 on OS X with VMware Fusion above the 8GB limit

    tl;dr - don't.VMware Fusion has an 8GB limit, so on my 16GB MacBook Pro (which is an old one with a 16GB memory upgrade), I wanted to use more than 8GB. You can fudge it my editing the .vmx file and changing the memsize value to whatever you want.However it turns out that if you do this the performance on the whole machine turns into a big. It beachballs all over the place, both in VMware and without. Constant hanging of VMware, fan running hot the whole time, etc.This is just an apocryphal view, but having spent a week and a half with it unusable and me thinking I was going to have to go back to Win7, turn it down back to using 8GB exactly seems to be working much more stably.

  • [Mac OS X] Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS is not recognized anymore

    I have used Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS for years now, alongside with Elgato EyeTV software. I am a happy and completely satisfied user! Since a couple of weeks the USB sitck stopped working on my MacPro1,1 (OS version 10.6.3): EyeTV does not see any device attached, and actually, the green led on the stick stays off. 1) it is not a USB port fault: I have unplugged any other USB/Firewire device and tried with different USB ports, to no avail (any other USB devices work as expected on any port) 2) I have completely uninstalled EyeTV software, including preferences and system daemons/extensions, rebooted and reinstalled the latest EyeTV. No way. 3) reset the PRAM. Nope. 4) checked the Apple System Profiler - USB: No device attached, The MacPro does not see it at all. ============= I need to say that: a) the device worked as a charm even with the latest OS 10.6.x (so it's not a OS upgrade cause) b) I have plugged the Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS to my MacBook5,1 where EyeTV is not installed and was never installed: The green led on the stick turns on, the growl bubble pops up, and the device is perfectly recognized by the system. Apple System Profiler says (sorry, Italian language): Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS (2882): ID prodotto: 0x005e ID fornitore: 0x0ccd Versione: 1.10 Numero di serie: 061102005755 Velocità: Fino a 12 Mb/sec Produttore: TerraTec Electronic GmbH ID posizione: 0x04100000 Corrente disponibile (mA): 500 Corrente necessaria (mA): 500 At this point I am pretty sure the Terratec stick is not damaged and there is something wrong with my MacPro. I kindly ask you: Is there a way to force my MacPro recognize the USB device? What can I check? Is there something that caches USB connection that can be reset?     Hi, I have a PC (Windows XP SP3) with VMWare Workstation 7 installed. The VMWare hosts Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2. RealVNC (4.1.3) is installed on both OS'es. Both of them use Hamachi2. Host OS (WinXP) also runs ZoneAlarm Firewall. Hamachi network is set as trusted. My goal is to allow RDP and VNC connections to be made to the guest OS (Windows Server 2003). Both options work absolutely fine if I connect from the host OS. However I have problems when other computers from our Hamachi network try to connect the guest OS (Win2K3). 1) RDP connections. RDP window opens, shows black content and after 15-20 seconds displays following error: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_yQhsRRimgKU/TArRrtiteQI/AAAAAAAABZA/e96za-y9wzo/rdp_error.JPG 2) RealVCN connections. Users are able to connect but all they see is a black screen inside VNC window.   • grub/burg listing a lot of os's

    I guess I've got more than one ubuntu installation (either two or three) along with a windows 7 installation. Each of the ubuntu installations also list something extra (maybe like a safe mode?) within grub. Firstly, how do I remove the ubuntu installations I don't use? (how do I first identify the one I do use? I log into it after booting it, but how do I delete the others) Also, how do I leave just a Windows 7 option and an Ubuntu option?

    If you have kids and macs and you use Parental Controls, for the moment don't upgrade to 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, the feature is broken after upgrading. I had to disable parental control completely on my daughters' macs in the meantime... After hundreds of parents have complained about problems in this discussion thread on Apple's forums, finally the tech press notices:  First There Was Apple's MapGate, Now Welcome ParentGate For the moment there doesn't seem to be a workaround. Ugh.

  • Xubuntu is not seeing my Win8 OS in the installer

    When I install Xubuntu, I get the message "This computer currently has no detected operating systems. What would you like to do?". I just did a fresh install of Win8 yesterday, and I guess it used EFI because I have a 104MB partition that is of type 'efi'. Is there any way to install Xubuntu next to Win8, and avoid any boot problems? Or can I switch Win8 to BIOS from EFI, without having to re-install Windows? I went through a ton of boot problems and re-installing yesterday... I really don't want to have to do it again.

  • Developing games using virtualization on macOS (or Linux) [on hold]

    From what I've seen, most of the gamedev tools and engines (that could generate cross platform games) are not supported on Mac. Havok/Project Anarchy, UDK, GameMaker, e.g. . Basically, the only options I found are: Unity3d and monogame + xamarin. Unity is nice and I've been playing with it for some time, but the free version is quite limited when we're talking about shaders, that made me consider that as an indie developer, I might want more freedom to experiment new things, without paying the expensive unity license. I didn't try monogame + xamarin yet, and altough XNA is a very nice game framework, I'd like to have more freedom to experiment and finish a game first before paying for the IDE, which is not possible with the current Xamarin business model. That leaves me with the thought that I must go back to windows, which I'd preferably do it partially, if it's possible. Using BootCamp is something that I'd like to avoid, since it's a pain to reboot when changing OS and that would probably force me to become a 100% windows user. Is there anyone actually developing a game using virtualization solutions like parallels or vmwareFusion? How was your experience?

  • Boot path not found, cannot start OS

    My desktop is 12.04 64bit, and it cannot boot from the hard drive anymore. When I attempt to it just is stuck on a blank screen with an blinking dash, and nothing happens. I checked with the bios trouble shoot for problems and it said that no boot path could be found. I do not know why this is happening, but need to fix it because it used to boot up normally. What I need to know is how to fix it. I can boot into a live DVD. Also, there were a few boots I would attempt to boot into a live USB, then it would boot to the hard drive, but that does not work any more. So with the live DVD (it is an 10.04 LTS 32bit), is there any means to correct the boot path from the live DVD? Thank you for your time and answers.

  • Screen split oddly when OS is installed from a Live CD

    Never used Linux before but I decided I want to start somewhere and Ubuntu seemed like the right place to start. I burned the 64bit version ISO onto a CD and installed it onto a fresh new hard drive I have. The Live CD works and the Live Distro thing works great. However when I attempt to install it, the screen splits oddly in a way where part of the right is on the left. Furthermore, after attempting to log in, the GUI doesn't show up and the computer would freeze and stay that way. However you can still move the cursor. I can't really get in or do anything (possibly because I don't know how) and tinker around since I am not too tech savvy. But I can follow instructions. Graphics Card Radeon hd 6670 I just tried the install with windows thing. There was the exact same problem.
