• Packages not showing up in created APT repository

  I created an APT repository using deb-scanpackages, and it seemed to go well. When I did a apt-get update on another server, the Packages.gz file was retrieved, and all seemed well - until I went to search for the packages contained in that repository (all packages are created locally). Several recommendations suggested reprepro; I tried that. Same result - except I had to rebuild the packages with the Priority and Section lines in the control file (nothing says this anywhere). The reprepro utility also generates a complicated directory structure which required rewriting the repository entry on the requesting server. I then found that the arch directory referenced i386 and not amd64 (which was requested by the requesting server). Is it possible that the AMD64 system isn't seeing packages compiled for i386? Searching the *Packages files in /var/lib/apt/lists show that the only packages for i386 are those I added (the other files are for the server - Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS). The server the packages were built on is Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS i686; the requesting server is x86_64. I found some discussion at the Debian AMD64FAQ but it claims to be obsolete. It makes mention of an extended syntax for repository listings for APT, and a command dpkg-subarchitecture - neither of which work on the local AMD64 server. Do I have to build two different sets of packages?

• Can't ssh to instance

  I have a linode instance, I was successfully connecting to it via ssh. But I've decided to rebuild my instance and then I can not connect to that instance via ssh. • Coarse Collision Detection in highly dynamic environment

  I'm currently working a 3D space game with A LOT of dynamic objects that are all moving (there is pretty much no static environment). I have the collision detection and resolution working just fine, but I am now trying to optimize the collision detection (which is currently O(N^2) -- linear search). I thought about multiple options, a bounding volume hierarchy, a Binary Spatial Partitioning tree, an Octree or a Grid. I however need some help with deciding what's best for my situation. A grid seems unfeasible simply due to the space requirements and cache coherence problems. Since everything is so dynamic however, it seems to be that trees aren't ideal either, since they would have to be completely rebuilt every frame. I must admit I never implemented a physics engine that required spatial partitioning, do I indeed need to rebuild the tree every frame (assuming that everything is constantly moving) or can I update the trees after integrating? Advice is much appreciated - to give some more background: You're flying a space ship in an asteroid field, and there are lots and lots of asteroids and some enemy ships, all of which shoot bullets. EDIT: I came across the "Sweep an Prune" algorithm, which seems like the right thing for my purposes. It appears like the right mixture of fast building of the data structures involved and detailed enough partitioning.   Recently, one of my desktops seems to have developed a problem with the fstab and mounting USB drives. The specific error I receive is... • Draw depth works on WP7 emulator but not device

  I am making a game on a WP7 device using C# and XNA. I have a system where I always want the object the user is touching to be brought to the top, so every time it is touched I add float.Epsilon to its draw depth (I have it set so that 0 is the back and 1 is the front). On the Emulator that all works fine, but when I run it on my device the draw depths seem to be completely random. I am hoping that anybody knows a way to fix this. I have tried doing a Clean & Rebuild and uninstalling from the device but that is no luck. My call to spritebatch.Begin is: spriteBatch.Begin(SpriteSortMode.FrontToBack, BlendState.AlphaBlend); and to draw I use spriteBatch.Draw(Texture, new Rectangle((int)X, (int)Y, (int)Width, (int)Height), null, Color.White, 0, Vector2.Zero, SpriteEffects.None, mDrawDepth); Where mDrawDepth is a float value of the draw depth (likely to be a very small number; a small multiple of float.Epsilon. Any help much appreciated, thanks!

• My site has crashed .. anyone have some info ?

  Hi all , I booked a domain name for my website from a hosting provider .I gave the domain name , along with ftp details to a freelancer to develop the site in wordpress . the freelancer developped and he got full payment , and the site and site was working fine ,etc .. From that time , I did not change the admin logging as well as ftp details , this means that such info is still known to the freelancer .. A week ago , I found that some links in my site was not working .. I sent him a mail about this , and he said that he will fix it if i give him ftp details . and I did so , next I found that the entire site is gone . then he sent me a mail , without I asked him , and he he said that there have been someone who got access to my server , and he removed all files of my site and he installed drupal instead .and that he can rebuild the site in one day , by charging a full fee of 250 usd again .. Can anyone know what I can do in this situation , to find who did such act , could it be the host provider or that freelancer ,, and if there is a possibility to have my site back top the server .. • Best practices: Ajax and server side scripting with stored procedures

  I need to rebuild an old huge website and probably to port everyting to ASP.NET and jQuery and I would like to ask for some suggestion and tips. Actually the website uses: Ajax (client site with prototype.js) ASP (vb script server side) SQL Server 2005 IIS 7 as web server This website uses hundred of stored procedures and the requests are made by an ajax call and only 1 ASP page that contain an huge select case Shortly an example: JAVASCRIPT + PROTOTYPE: var data = { action: 'NEWS', callback: 'doNews', param1: $('text_example').value, ......: ..........}; AjaxGet(data); // perform a call using another function + prototype SERVER SIDE ASP: <% ...... select case request("Action") case "NEWS" With cmmDB .ActiveConnection = Conn .CommandText = "sp_NEWS_TO_CALL_for_example" .CommandType = adCmdStoredProc Set par0DB = .CreateParameter("Param1", adVarchar, adParamInput,6) Set par1DB = .CreateParameter(".....", adInteger, adParamInput) ' ........ My question are: Instead of having many CASES is it possible to create dynamic vb code that parses the ajax request and creates dynamically the call to the desired SP (also implementing the parameters passed by JS)? What is the best approach to handle situations like this, by using the advantages of .Net + protoype or jQuery? How the big sites handle situation like this? Do they do it by creating 1 page for request? Thanks in advance for suggestion, direction and tips.

• Upgrade went wrong, laptop essentially 'bricked'

  I have an old netbook I was trying to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10. Ubuntu was in the process of upgrading when everything completely froze. I left it sit for an hour but it would not respond to anything. So I powered down the machine and it didn't have the necessary files to run Ubuntu. I went to the terminal and it told me to put in some command that I can not remember to 'rebuild' something. That takes me to now, when I turn on the laptop it comes up with a screen "GNU GRUB version 1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3.3" and has a bunch of options such as: 1. Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-32-generic 2. Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-32-generic (recover mode) etc. (there are like 15 of these with different numbers after 2.6.35 and the word 'generic'. It doesn't seem to matter what I pick, it will go to the "Ubuntu" loading screen with the colored dots but then every time it will freeze and I have to reboot to the same thing. I can't seem to get a terminal prompt anywhere either. Any ideas? I can't think of what to do :(

  JEOS stands for Just Enough Operating System.  It is  great environment for building virtual machines without all the clutter of a windowing system, games, office products, etc.  It is from Ubuntu and you install it using the Ubuntu server install, but rather than picking a standard install, press F4 and choose “Install a minimal system.” Note: The “Install a minimal virtual machine” is specific to VMWare and I plan to use VirtualBox. Be sure to include Open SSH in the install so that it installs sshd. *** Also, if you plan to install XE, you’ll need to modify the partitions to have a larger swap space (at least 1.5 G). *** Once the install is done, I find it useful to install a few other items. Update Ubuntu apt-get update Install some other tools apt-get openjdk-6-jre Yes, java will be included in any of the WebLogic installs, but I need this one if I want to do remote display (for config wizards, etc). apt-get gcc Some apps require to rebuild the kernel modules, so you’ll need a basic compiler. Install guest additions (Choose the VirtualBox Devices->Install Guest Additions…” option.  This sets up a /dev/cdrom or /dev/cdrom1.  You’ll need to manually mount this temporarily: sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt Then run the linux .bin file. Update nofile limits.  Most java apps fail with the standard ubuntu settings: edit /etc/security/limits.conf and add these lines at the end: *     soft nofile 65535 *     hard nofile 65535 root  soft nofile 65535 root  hard nofile 65535 These numbers are very high and I wouldn’t do this on a production system, but for this environment it is fin. To get rid of the annoying piix error on boot, add the following line to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file blacklist i2c_piix4

• How do I copy a package from Debian to my PPA?

  I'd like to add the latest gourmet package from Debian sid to our team's PPA so Ubuntu users who would like to run an up-to-date version of Gourmet can add that PPA to their software sources. (Dependency-wise, that shouldn't be much of an issue as pretty much all our current dependencies are already available in all currently supported Ubuntu versions.) I've downloaded the *.dsc file and debian and orig tarballs, and even figured out I could use this for the package's source.changes file. I also downloaded the Debian maintainer's public key so dput can validate the package. I then tried to upload the package to our PPA using dput ppa:~gourmet/ppa gourmet_0.17.3-1_source.changes (I also tried without the tilda.) This seemed to succeed, but I didn't get a confirmation email, and no packages are now displayed at our PPA, which leads me to believe that the package was rejected because the Debian maintainer's key is obviously not among our team members' keys. So what's the easiest way to "copy" a package from Debian (sid) to a Launchpad PPA? Do I really need to rebuild the entire package locally before I can upload it?

• Joomla: Cross site link boxes

  I am currently evaluating Joomla for use on the the rebuild of our corporate website. One of the features our designs have is spaces for what we've been calling widgets. These widgets include common ones for each page, contact us boxes, section navigation, that all seem pretty easy to implement. The other widgets we would us to highlight specific pages within the site relevant to the one you are on, and are therefore different for each article. We've called these link widgets and these are a pretty common site on many websites. I'm honestly at a bit of a loss as to how to do this with Joomla. From a CMS perspective I'd like to allow users to just select which three link widgets they want when editing the article and have some way of creating the widgets within the CMS as well. Editing the link widget would allow setting a title, a bit of text and selecting the page that it links to. Am I going to be able to do this with Joomla, and if I can roughly how to I go about it ?

• A fix for the design time error in MVVM Light V4.1

  For those of you who installed V4.1 of MVVM Light and created a project for Windows Phone 8, you will have noticed an error showing up in the design surface (either in Visual Studio designer, or in Expression Blend). The error says: “Could not load type ‘System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanging’ from assembly ‘mscorlib.extensions’” with additional information about version numbers. The error is caused by an incompatibility between versions of System.Windows.Interactivity. Because this assembly is strongly named, any version incompatibility is causing the kind of error shown here (for an interesting discussion on the strong naming issue, see this thread on Codeplex). I managed to resolve the issue for Windows Phone 8 and will publish a cleaned up installer next week. In the mean time, in order to allow you to continue development, please follow the steps: Download the new DLLs zip package (MVVMLight_V4_1_25_WP8). Right click on the Zip file and select Properties from the context menu. Press the “Unblock” button (if available) and then OK. Right click again on the zip package and select “Extract all…”. Select a known location for the new DLLs. Open the MVVM Light project with the design time error in Visual Studio 2012. Open the References folder in the Solution Explorer. Select the following DLLs: GalaSoft.MvvmLight.dll, GalaSoft.MvvmLight.Extras.dll, Microsoft.Practices.ServiceLocation.dll and System.Windows.Interactivity.dll. Press “delete” and confirm to remove the DLLs from your project. Right click on References and select Add Reference from the context menu. Browse to the folder with the new DLLs. Select the four new DLLs and press OK. Rebuild your application, and open it again in Blend or in the Visual Studio designer. The error should be gone now. In the next few days, as time allows, I will publish a new MSI containing a fixed version of the DLLs as well as a few other improvements. • How do you convince the client their application's backend needs a rewrite?

  I have been supporting a LOB winforms application for a client the last 3 years. The application is built with a simple monolithic architecture and uses .NET 2.0. The application is a core part of their operations and its longevity is paramount. It needs to evolve with their evolving business processes, as well as implement improved functionality etc....this brings me to believe that this application needs an overhaul of sorts on the back-end. The problem is changing a back-end is "invisible"...i.e. the user never actually sees it. It's a quality of the system that is changing (stability, maintainability, reliability, longevity), not some functional requirement that will be easily seen...i.e. the ROI is not obvious. There is a lot of new functionality to be added to the front-end as well (user experience). I am considering a strategy of changing the back-end over time...i.e. when making a change or adding a feature to the front-end, change those components in the back-end that are affected, eventually you get to everything. How do I convince the client that we need to rebuild the back-end?

• Migration a database from 32bit to 64bit

  Database migrations from an 32bit environment to an 64bit environment keeping the same platform architecture (e.g. moving an Oracle 10.2.0.5 database from MS Windows XP 32bit to MS Windows Server 2003 64bit) does not happen that often anymore. But still we see them getting done. And there are a few things to note when doing such a move. First of all the important question is:Will you upgrade your database as part of this move - Yes or No? If you say "Yes" then you are almost done with that topic as we will take care of that bitnes move during the upgrade. The only thing you have to take care is OLAP in case you are using OLAP Option with Analytic Workspaces (AW) by yourself. Those store data in Binary LOBs - and in order to move AWs from 32bit to 64bit you have to export your AWs prior to the move - and import them later on. People who don't use OLAP don't have to take care on this. But if you say "No" (meaning: no upgrade actions involved - you keep your database version) then you have to make sure to invalidate all packages and stored code in the database before you shutdown your database in the 32bit environment and prior to moving it over. And the same rule as above for OLAP applies once you use the OLAP Option. In the source environment: startup upgrade;    -- [or startup migrate; -- for Oracle 9i] @?/rdbms/admin/utlirp.sqlshutdown immediate In the destination environment: startup upgrade @?/olap/admin/xumuts.plb --Only if OLAP Option is installed@?/rdbms/admin/utlrp.sql The script utlirp.sql will invalidate all packages and stored code, utlrp.sql will recompile - and xumuts.plb will rebuild the OLAP Analytic Workspaces in case you have the OLAP Option installed.

• Expanding RAID-5

  I'm new to RAID and trying to get my head around things. I have owned a Drobo in the past (which I liked) but it failed. Here's a hypothetical scenario: Assume I set up a RAID-5 array consisting of four 1TB hot-swappable 2.5" SATA drives. I name this volume 'My Data'. By my calculations, that would give me 2.7TB of usable space and the ability to recover if a single drive fails. I have a few questions: What happens if I pull out a single 1TB drive and replace it with a 2TB drive? Would the array automatically rebuild itself with no issues? Would the maximum capacity remain 2.7TB? If number (1) above is true and the array rebuilds itself with three 1TB drives one 2TB drive what would happen if I then pulled another 1TB drive out and stuck in a 2TB drive (you can see where I'm going here can't you). Would I eventually be able to gain more storage by gradually adding bigger drives? From a practical point of view, how much input is required from me as the end user whilst these drives are being pulled out and put in? On the Drobo, the storage space just automagically handles itself. Would I have to be actively involved in telling Ubuntu what was going on or would any of it be automated? Thanks in advance,

• Dynamic quadrees

  recently I come out writing Quadtree for creatures culling in Opendungeons game. Thing is those are moving points and bounding hierarchy will quickly get lost if the quadtree is not rebuild very often. I have several variants, first is to upgrade the leaf position , every time creature move is requested. ( note if I would need collision detection anyway, so this might be necessery anyway). Second would be making leafs enough large , that the creature would sure stay inside it's bounding box ( due to its speed limit). The partition of a plane in quadtree is always fixed ( modulo the hierarchical unions of some parts) . For creatures close to the center of the plane , there would be no way of keeping it but inside one big leaf, besides this brokes the invariant that each point can be put into any small area as desired. So on the second thought could I use several quadrees ? Each would have its "coordinate axis XY" somwhere shifted ? • High Availability

  Udi Dahan presented at the UK Connected Systems User Group last night. He discussed High Availability and pointed out that people often think this is purely an infrastructure challenge. However, the implications of system crashes, errors and resulting data loss need to be considered and managed by software developers. In addition a system should remain both highly reliable (backwardly compatible) and available during deployments and upgrades. The argument is that you cannot be considered highly available if your system is always down every time you upgrade. For our recent BizTalk 2009 upgrade we made use of our Business Continuity servers (note the name, rather than calling them Disaster Recovery servers ? ) to ensure our clients could continue to operate while we upgraded the Production BizTalk servers. Then we failed back to the newly built 2009 environment and rebuilt the BC servers. Of course, in the event of an actual disaster there was a window where either one or the other set were not available to take over – however, our Staging machines were already primed to switch to production settings, having been used for testing the upgrade in the first place.   While not perfect (the failover between environments was not automatic and without some minimal outage) planning the upgrade in this way meant BizTalk was online during the rebuild and upgrade project, we didn’t have to rush things to get back on-line and planning meant we were ready to be as available as we could be in the event of an actual disaster.

• Rebuilding a Mac Mini (early 2009) --- Update

  A couple of months ago I rebuilt the family’s Mac Mini (you can read the details in this post).  Things had gone pretty smoothly until a few weeks ago.  That’s when my wife mentioned that different applications would spontaneously crash. She kept track for a few days, and it turned out to be any or all of the applications that she uses (Safari, Quicken, Entourage, etc.) . I did some online research and didn’t really find too much – but then how do you do a proper Google search for “Mac OS 10.5.8 applications crash”.  The best suggestion seemed to be issues around 10.5.8, where people suggested that you go back to a previous version (something like 10.5.6).  The only way to do that is to completely reinstall the OS – which is what I had just done. SO, instead of doing that, I decided to just reapply the 10.5.8 update by downloading it from Apple (http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update ).  I had installed the updates after the rebuild through the Apple Update mechanism built into OS X.  I thought maybe the combo update would reinstall some corrupted file (or something). I did this about a week ago and sure enough, we’ve had one crash this week with the same usage patterns as before.  I still have no idea what was causing the crashes, but at this point, I’m just going to declare it fixed and move on.

• How do I install Intel ethernet drivers?

  I just bought a Lenovo T420, I booted the live CD and couldn't connect to my wireless router so I figured I needed the drivers for it. I have the last version of Ubuntu(12.04). It's a Intel® 82579 Gigabit Ethernet Controller So I went on intel's website and downloaded the Drivers for Linux and compiled them with make install. Here's the tutorial I followed: Linux Driver Install I have a few question though, What are these doing : modprobe e1000e ifconfig eth0 up dhclient eth0 ping intel.com As far as what I've read, modprobe seems to add the driver to the list of drivers for the kernel, but is that operation only good for one session? The two other lines, I don't understand either what they are doing. What does he mean at the end when he mentions : Note: Whenever the kernel version is upgraded you will need rebuild this driver. And are these steps permanent? Or do I have to add them to some boot.conf file for everytime I boot. Anyways, the steps worked for me and I have established a connection with my router, I just need to know if I need to do additional steps to keep the driver permanently etc.

• Making HTML5 videos stored on AWS S3 **difficult** to download (because I cant make it impossible)

  I am building a website that hosts video's stored on AWS's S3 service. The videos are played thru a HTML5 player we have built. Ive just been asked to make sure "nobody can steal our video's". Now I know that if you really don't want something stolen, don't put it up on the internet. However I just need to secure these videos as good as possible, the videos need to at the very least resist someone going thru the source code and trying to download them manually. One option available to me is to completely rebuild the video player in flash. This is not ideal, for several reasons, notably because I would also then have to build an App for mobile devices to be able to view this site. So I am looking for other options. I have heard about using a token to make the file available only during certain times. I have heard of using a separate file to serve the videos that sits between the HTML5 page and the video file. I am also having a look at IAM, the Secure AWS Access Control, in the hopes AWS can solve this problem for me. Can anyone here recommend any of these options? Or perhaps suggest other options available to me? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Configuring network to set wlan0 as primary

  I recently had to rebuild my pc and decided to go for ubuntu 14.04. I think the mistake I made was I started from a 12.04 install disk instead of the 12.10 disk I'd used previously and when given the option set my primary connection as ethernet (because the wireless option didn't work). After upgrading to 14.04 etc, I managed to get the wireless working, or more using steps like ifconfig -a and the likes I managed to prove that the wireless card etc. is all installed and working. However every time I boot without a hard wired connection plugged in I get the message "waiting for network configuration". I can then once it's booted without a network get my wirless working using sudo ifconfig wlan0 up iwlist wlan0 scan This seems to kick the wireless module into life and it appears in the GUI and I can then select a network, however all the options like edit network and disconnect etc are all greyed out. What I would like of course is if the WLAN0 was just set as my primary default network so I've been looking for a solution to this and it would seem that I need to adjust the old /etc/network/interfaces file but when I try to do so using the sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces command I, well I simply have no idea what I'm doing. Other than that typing :q! gets me out of there before I do to much damage! As far as I can tell (by navigating to the file in the GUI) the output of my /etc/network/interfaces is as follows: (obviously not including the " in each line that's just to break the heading rule of the #) "# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system "# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5). "# The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback "# The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp If this is the case then this clearly doesn't contain what it should do but I don't how to fix it. Nor do I even know if I'm on the right track. Any help would be appreciated thanks :)
