• GNOME 3.2 Menu Not Loading

  Gnome 3.2 Menu is not loading. I wanted to add a minimize and maximize to the right of my windows. So I did the following: gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout --type string "menu:minimize,maximize,close" logout and login that it per the instructions of this website: Instructions I logged out and back in and that was it. No menu. Help!!! By the way, there is a fix on this website to restore Gnome. However it did not work. Another odd thing was that Gnome Tweak Tool is black under the Shell Extension tab.

• Use-cases for node.js and c#

  I do quite a bit of ASP.NET work (C#, MVC), but most of it is typical web development. I do Restful architecture using CRUD repositories. Most of my clients don't have a lot of advanced requirements within their applications. I'm now looking at node.js and it's performance implications (I'm addicted to speed), but I haven't delved into it all that much. I'm wondering if node.js can realistically replace my typical web development in C# and ASP.NET MVC (not rewriting existing apps, but when working on new ones) node.js can complement an ASP.NET MVC app by adding some async goodness to the existing architecture. Are there use-cases for/against C# and node.js? Edit I love ASP.NET MVC and am super excited with where it's going. Just trying to see if there are special use cases that would favor node.js

• Crashing/freezing problems with an Aspire One 722

  After several annoying points with installing ubuntu 11.10 on my acer aspire one 722 i finally made this run. After installing i had freeze issues and solved them by putting network boot on first priority on the bios. Yesterday all worked fine, no problems with wlan etc. But today all is crashing down. Atm iam at the university and tried to log into the public wlan. With that came : i cannot shut down, terminal is not working, very slow perfomance, some apps are starting like libre office, some not like system manager, buttons are not reacting, wlan symbol is spinning all the time. Any suggestions i can do?

• Do Apple and Google ask for a share if custom payment is done in a free app?

  I have a multiplatform game (web/iOS/Android) in the making. In the free version the core game is still fully playable but people who choose to pay will get more social features (and no ads, of course). I was thinking that rather than having a free and a paid version for all the platforms I may release the apps just for free and if the users want more, they have to register and pay a one-time fee (through a payment gateway or PayPal). The extra content would then be available in all the clients they have access to. Theoretically, this means a better value for the players and less maintenance and headache for me (obviously I have to handle all the payment troubles myself). Does it fit into the business model of Apple/Google? Or will they still claim their share of the registration fee?

• Best Way To Develop Robust Cross-Platform Application?

  Windows C programmer here (going back to 1992 and Windows95 back when it was called Windows93). Can function in C++, but mostly still a C programmer. Looking to build a cross-platform casual game. Very numbers heavy with only a few artistic embellishments and animations, so perhaps a development environment for business apps might be the best option. Or an easy-to-use 2D game dev platform. Target platforms: Windows, Mac, MS Tablet, iPhone, iPad, Android. I currently develop on Windows with Visual Studio 2012, but we could spend up to $50K on hardware/software/middleware if necessary. Not very competent getting open-source software working. Would rather pay the money and jump right into app development. Recommendations?

• Enabling Multi-touch features of the Apple Magic Mouse on Ubuntu 12.04

  I want to write a simple app that uses Apple's Magic Trackpad, nothing special, just so that it recognizes atleast one gesture. The thing is, Ubuntu itself doesnt really recognize this device. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and by default the device works with 1 finger, but without tap-click or doubletap, 3 fingers move the window and 3 finger spread makes it fullscreen. I managed to enable 2 finger scrolling with "xinput set-prop 8 'Two-Finger Scrolling' 1 1", but thats about it. No other gestures work, ginn doesnt start, giesview detects the device but doesnt respond to any of the gestures, and touchegg doesnt start either. I tried example apps from qt that come with ubuntu but they dont work. So... what do i do? i tried using qt but all i get from the app is "Got touch without getting TouchBegin for id XX" what else can i use to get my app to work with multitouch devices?

• Unity does not display properly [closed]

  Ubuntu Unity on the Ubuntu netbook edition installs without a problem but when I log in though, where the panels are, there is just blank area with a shadow effect style thing on it. I can open apps but the Window buttons and the global menu are not visable. Does this mean that I cannot use Unity. I'm running it through Wubi on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. My total ammount of graphics memory is 831MB My dedicated memory is 128MB. The odd thing is is that Windows Aero displays without a problem so why is there a problem with Unity Hope this helps Ben

• Recreate JoliCloud app list

  I was wondering if there was any tutorial on how to recreate the pagination system used on JoliCloud. The system shows the amount of pages at the bottom along with what page you are on. It is kind of like the iOS springboard. I would like for it to get the apps via a MySQL query, but that's besides the point. I've searched Google and have found no answers on how to do this. • Video capture Performance

  I have noticed high CPU utilization in a number of applications (except mplayer) which read from the embedded webcam on my laptop. Bizarrely CPU utilization varies proportionately to the level of illumination present. I know that that high CPU usage has nothing to do with rendering the video, as I have written a simple app using the OpenCV library to simply grab frames from the webcam, and cpu usage is still high. I think that mplayer might be using my GPU (and the other apps aren't), but since its not an issue with rendering, I dont think this explains anything. Cheese Low light --- ~12% CPU Bright Light ---- ~63% CPU Camorama Low light --- ~7% CPU Bright Light ---- ~30% CPU Opencv C++ library, (display in a single highgui window) Low light --- ~13% CPU Bright Light ---- ~40% CPU (same test on windows 7, 4-9%) Mplayer No problem, 1-2% regardless of light levels Note: If all I want't to do is capture a feed from my webcam I would use mplayer and forget about it, but I'm developing an application which uses the OpenCV to capture a video feed among other things, performance is important.

• Windows Phone 7 dev: C# or silverlight for a simple app?

  I'm about to hire a programmer to develop Windows Phone 7 apps. The current app that shall be developed is quite simple. The app will download content from a Web-API. There are two lists to select content. There is a single item content page. Users can rate the content and upload photos. The screens will be produced by our artist. I am pretty sure that most of the available programmers haven't touched WP7 development yet. Now the questions are: What technology is suitable for this kind of app? What technology requires less research, learning and production time? Do you already have experience of limitations of silverlight compared to C#? (I am also thinking of future projects) My guess is that silverlight programmers are more experienced in UI programming than C# coders. Do you feel the same way?

• Silverlight Cream Monday WP7 App Review # 2

  Today's Review (alphabetic order): GooNews, Grocery Shopping List, Need for Speed, SurfCube, and United Nations News. I'm a day late if these are going to be 'Monday' posts, but there are lots of apps, lots of goodness, and lots of email, so I might try to do 2 a week, we'll see. So once again I've got a small review of 5 apps that are either on my phone or have been. Disclaimers at the end. In this Issue:   GooNews is a very cool app from Shawn Wildermuth (AgiliTrain). I don't know if he uses this as a demo during his instruction, but it definitely serves a purpose... wanna pick up the top news items from Google on a never-ending basis? ... this is it. You can add your own keyword searches, and send stories to InstaPaper or share via email. I like this because it brings me the news quickly and updated, and works great. GooNews is by AgiliTrain and is Free This was a request by the author, and actually surprised me. I'm a big one for lists, but I would have just done a OneNote list to SkyDrive and to my phone. This app is a lot more than that, but will take you some setup to make it be 'yours'. For obvious reasons, there are no unit prices on things, so you have to set that up to get some idea of the cost of what you're shopping for. But if you do that, you'll get a nice total. Lots of thought went into the various categories and you can add your own. There's a bit of animation on the category selection that's nice. He seems to have covered all the bases necessary to use this, even shopping 'plans' that can be saved, and emailing of lists. As I said, I'm more of a raw list person, but if you take the time to set this up, it should work very nicely for you. Grocery Shopping List is by Grocery Shopper and is $0.99 ($1.99 after Feb 1) with a free trial. This was my 2nd commercial game I bought, and the one I've played the most. I ran the trial, thought it worked great, and bought it. I've had a lot of fun with this... there's no gas pedal.. your foot is in the carbeurator from the GO!, and unless you wanna tap the screen and brake like a little girl, just hang onto the steering wheel (the phone), and guide your way through. Hours of fun and challenges here. I like this because it's got some challenge to it, and the cars seem to be very realistic in their reactions. Need for Speed Undercover is by Electronic Arts is $4.99 and has a free trial. SurfCube Browser is another app by the folks that did the GuitarTuner I reviewed on Monday. You have to see SurfCube to believe it. You've probably seen the YouTube video, if not check SilverlightCream number 1017. The app works very solid, and just as the video demonstrates. I downloaded and tried this, and it immediately did 2 things: bought it, and pinned it to my start page. I like this because it's fun to work with, and it works great as a browser. I'm about *this* close to replacing the IE tile on my front page with SurfCube. SurfCube Browser is by Kinabalu Innovation Limited and is $1.99 and has a free trial. Coming in with another News app is United Nations News by Justin Angel. This is definitely a news aggregator for 'grown ups'... news, photos, videos, and radio broadcsts from the international community all in one very slick app. This is an amazingly well thought-out and complete app. Even better yet, Justin has the code on CodePlex. A very well-done International news aggregator. United Nations News is by Justin Angel and is Free. A few disclaimers: Feel free to write me about your app and tell me about it. While it would be very cool to receive a whole bunch of xap files to review, at this point, for technical reasons, I'm unable to side-load my device. Since I plan on only doing this one day a week (twice if I find time), and only 5, I may never get caught up, so if you send me some info, be patient. Re: games ... remember I'm old... I'm from the era of Colossal Cave and Zork. Duke-Nukem 2D and Captain Comic were awesome. I don't own an XBOX or any other game system, so take game reviews from my perspective -- who knows, it may be refreshing :) I won't pay for an app or game just to try it. If you expect me to test-drive your app, it's going to have to have a Free Trial. I'm still playing with the format, comments are welcome. • Cannot turn off password

  Cannot authenticate without a password It did not fix my problem. If I create an admin account without password in the first place, what should I enter in place of the password? Also, how to perform administrative actions (such as sudo or downloading apps from Ubuntu Software Center) without password? How to remove the password entirely from my admin accounts? Note: In Windows 7, when you do not set a password or remove the existing password for an administrator, that administrator can be used to authenticate without a password. Leave the password blank and you can do anything.

  I see many applications which have world-clock map, and I would like to make my own to enhance some of my mobile apps. I wonder if anybody has any knowledge where to start, how to draw a curved shadow representing the dawn and the sunset on the globe. • How to hide bottom panel in GNOME?

  I want to hide bottom panel of Gnome in Ubuntu 10.10 so that I would be able to show it again when I want. In the property menu of the panel there is an option for Autohide but not hide totally. The reason I need it, is because I am using Docky panel and it now it is behind the bottom panel and looks like awful. What I am doing right now is I am deleting it totally by right clicking on the panel. And the only way I know to return it back is executing following command in the terminal. rm -r ~/.gconf/apps/panel Any other solutions?

• OSD desktop-clock that does not get in your way?

  Hello, is there a clock application, that can be placed on your screen like a widget staying always on top but automatically fades away on mouseover enabling you to click through it on items below, (behaves pretty much like the Ubuntu notifications in that sense). I am aware, that there are screenlets and gdesklets widget apps, but those are buggy, look outdated, and do not comply with the criteria listed above. What I have in mind is a clock that is large, (digital), always visible (on top of all other windows), and does not disrupt your work (e.g. you can still click that scroll bar or button if it is just below the clock, since the clock fades away on hovering). A tool called "OSD-Lyrics" that show lyrics for songs and behaves exactly the way I described above. So it should be possible (and even easier) to do the same with a clock. Thanks in advance, YSN

• Ubuntu live session crashes and boots to a black screen

  I heard about Ubuntu from a friend and wanted to test it out. I made a Pendrive Ubuntu 12.04 with a persistent file using Universal USB Installer. The first time I booted Ubuntu from the USB everything went like usual. I was just a bit exploring Ubuntu and had installed a few apps nothing more. Today after using Windows 7 for while again, I wanted to boot Ubuntu again. When I boot it, the usual loading screen comes up but after that it crashes and gave me a black screen. Is there a possibility to check the USB on errors or do I need to reinstall Ubuntu on the USB?
