  • Backing up files on ubuntu for reinstall. Will there be problems with permissions?

    I have some very important files I want to backup before I reinstall my Ubuntu back to 9.04 from the 9.10 (its causing me all sorts of problems). The files total size is small so im just going to copy them over to Dropbox. Im wondering, when i reinstall Ubuntu and copy them back will there be any issues re the permissions of those files because my old user account which created them and the new user Ill setup on the new install will be different?

  • How to Run vnc4server on Ubuntu in Certain Resolution?

    There's a headless Ubuntu instance used as a host for our build server. I have some UI code that requires some graphical output. Installing a vnc4server and redirecting a DISPLAY to it worked like a charm. Not that my UI tests are running but test scripts can take screen shots. Problem is that I need to set the resolution that vnc4server uses to serve the graphical content. Does anybody know how to configure it on Ubuntu server?

    I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) with grub 1.99. I installed on a RAID10 multidevice BTRFS partition. I thought that multidevice support is included in grub for a while but on boot I'm dropped to a initramfs shell, because it fails to mount root ("invalid argument"). This is actually the same message I get if I want to mount a btrfs volume without executing btrfs device scan. Therefore I wonder: Does Ubuntu's grub version even support boot from btrfs mutlidevice ?

  • Ubuntu maverick username and password works with ssh but not with smb when I connect from MacOS 10.6.5

    I have an Ubuntu Maverick desktop that I can easily connect using ssh but when I want to see the shared directories using "go to server", MacOs connects to the Ubuntu machine and I can see the shared directories but when I enter my username and passord to get access it complains about me entering wrong username and/or password. Any ideas? What more information would you need to give me some advise? Is there a step by step how-to manual to get this done? thanks

    Ubuntu 9.1 runs quite slugglish on my old laptop from 2004. Slower than Windows XP that was on there. It has 512mb RAM and probably 1.2ghz (can't remember) CPU. I have turned off Visual Effects under Appearance Preferences. Are there any other tricks to get better performance, or do I just need a better computer to try Ubuntu? Thanks

I've just read the 2.2 mongodb release notes on upgrading and it says to just replace the binary. Would that be /usr/lib/mongodb/mongod ? It looks like the 2.2 tar has several files I might need to copy over: mongo, mongod, mongoexport, mongodump, mongofiles, mongoimport, mongorestore, mongos, xulwrapper Can I just copy and paste all of those over to replace the old versions of those files?

This is what I have and what happens; I have a drawing application and certain variables and properties need to be serialized. (So , Xml.Serialization has been used.) Now this has already been done in a huge portion and I've created some other attributes which needed to be serialized and it works. There is one base class and classes such as drawablestar, drawableeclipse ,etc. all inherit from this class. As does my drawabletextboxclass. If I load my saved file it shows me the correct location and correct size of drawn objects. If I open my xml file I can see all values are correctly saved ( including my FontFamily ). Also the color which can be adjusted is saved and then properly displayed when I load a previously saved drawing. Of course because the coordinates work, if I insert a textField ,the location where it is being displayed is correct. However here comes the problem , my fontSize and fontfamily don't work. As you can see I created them in the base class, However this does not work. Is my approach completely off? What can I do ? Before saving img14.imageshack.us/i/beforeos.jpg/ After loading the Font jumps back to Sans serif and size 12. I could really use some help here..   • Cannot connect to MySQL with JDBC - Connection Timeout - Ubuntu 9.04

    I am running Ubuntu and am ultimately trying to connect Tomcat to my MySQL database using JDBC. It has worked previously but after a reboot the instance now fails to connect. Both Tomcat 6 and MySQL 5.0.75 are on the same machine Connection string: jdbc:mysql:///localhost:3306 I can connect to MySQL on the command line using the mysql command The my.cnf file is pretty standard (Available on request) has bind address: 127.0.0.1 I cannot Telnet to the MySQL port despite netstat saying MySQL is listening I have one IpTables rule to forward 80 - 8080 and no firewall I'm aware of. I'm pretty new to this and I'm not sure what else to test. I don't know whether I should be looking in etc/interfaces and if I did what to look for. It's weird because it used to work but after a reboot it's down so I must have changed something.... :). I realise a timeout indicates the server is not responding and I assume it's because the request isn't actually getting through. I installed MySQL via apt-get and Tomcat manually.   • Unable to boot Ubuntu 13.10 (nVidia GTX 770m and Intel HD 4600)

    Ever since I bought this laptop I've been trying to install Ubuntu on it. It came with W8 preinstalled. Up to this point, I've been able to boot in UEFI mode with a black screen. I can tell it's trying to use the nVidia card (there's a led on the computer, depending on the color you can tell which GPU is using) and if I press crtl+alt+F1 I can go to console mode. Taking this advantage I tried to install bumblebee and after a successful install the led that indicates which GPU is being used change, indicating that it switched to the Intel HD 4600 graphics. After the installation I tried to initiate the graphic interface (startx) with no success. I also saved the dsmeg output to see if it can be of any help. In order to be able to get to this stage I had to boot with nomodeset option and removed quiet and splash. Anyone got this same error? Any guidance? I've tried other linux distros and so far the only one that is able to boot is Opensuse 12.3 without any issues (but only when I switch to legacy mode instead of UEFI).

  • Finding Font Issues in Acrobat

    Ok let me try this again, so sorry for not be clear. We create our PDFs through Quark, then send to print. I usually create outlines on my EPS files before I load in Quark but forgot this time. We bypassed the font error that Quark gave us by accident and found out our PDF was bad too late and it cost a lot of money to fix. We are trying to find a way to check our PDF for font problems before we send it to print, in case this problem happens again. We just want to be extra sure that we have tried everything. What I see in Quark is what the font is supposed to look like. When I view my PDF, the text is mixed up. Its readable but doesn't look like its supposed to and the spacing is all off within the text. My boss told me about the preflight in Quark and the Internal Structure for the fonts. She was asking me if this would help and what the lingo all meant. (which is where my first question started) The image on the left is my EPS that is correct, the image on the right is from the PDF. The white text in the top right and the website at the bottom left is what is messed up. I am running Mac 10.5.8, Quark 7.5 and Acrobat 8.3.1. Thanks, Jayme

    I have an issue with one of our servers running Ubuntu 10.04, it is running BackupPC and collects backups from various machines / servers around the building. On the 8th minute (12:08, 12:18, 12:28 etc) the backups are transferred to an external hard drive, we have three and rotate one drive for another everyday. The problem we are having is we are randomly experiencing input / output errors, when this happens you cannot read / write to the drive, it hasn't unmounted so I can cd to the mount point /media/backup1. You see we have three drives all formatted to ext2, on two of them we were getting I/O errors frequently, I cam back to Quamis' answer and discovered the fsck command, so ran it against the problems drives: fsck /dev/sdb1 This found and fixed a load of problems on the drive, most probably caused by power outages / unsafe removal of drives etc, as the drives are in the xt2 format they aren't journalled and thus aren't protected against such issues. Drives are now working beautifully, thanks all! :D

Recommendations included disabling ipv6 (that did not work) and disabling ipv4 and leaving ipv6 (will not work for me as my router and ISP don't support it and so could not test anyway).     My Ubuntu hangs at boot with message "Attached scsi removable disk". When I boot with param acpi=off, system boots fine. I'm booting from harddrive, not from usb device. I managed to locate source of this problem to the external card reader & usb hub, into which I have connected external keyboard and mouse. If i disconnect it (whole card reader & usb hub), system boots fine. Could you suggest any way to boot successfully without adding acpi=off or disconnecting hub&reader before booting?
