  • Progressbar blocks notiyfyDatasetChanged() method in Android

    - by pathfinder
    I'm trying to display a ProgressBar while a listview is being populated. This is my XML <FrameLayout android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" > <ListView android:id="@android:id/list" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:divider="@null" android:dividerHeight="0dp" android:fadingEdge="none" > </ListView> <ProgressBar android:id="@+id/doProgress" android:layout_width="60dp" android:layout_height="60dp" android:layout_gravity="center" /> </FrameLayout> ProgressBar's visibiliy has been changed in the onPostExecuteMethod when the whole listview is loaded. AsyncTask Code: public class WhatToDoLoader extends AsyncTask<String, String, String> { ProgressDialog progress = new ProgressDialog(WhatToDo.this); String url = "http://wearedesigners.net/clients/clients12/tourism/fetchWhatToDoList.php"; final String TAG_MAIN = "item"; final String TAG_ID = "itemId"; final String TAG_NAME = "itemName"; final String TAG_DETAIL = "itemDetailText"; final String TAG_ITEM_IMAGE = "itemImages"; final String TAG_MAP = "itemMapData"; final String TAG_MAP_IMAGE = "mapImage"; @Override protected void onProgressUpdate(String... values) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub super.onProgressUpdate(values); adapter.notifyDataSetChanged(); } @Override protected void onPreExecute() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub super.onPreExecute(); /* * progress.setMessage("Loading What To Do List"); progress.show(); */ } @Override protected String doInBackground(String... params) { XMLParser parser = new XMLParser(); String xml = parser.getXmlFromUrl(url); // getting XML Document doc = parser.getDomElement(xml); // getting DOM element NodeList nl = doc.getElementsByTagName(TAG_MAIN); // TODO Auto-generated method stub for (int i = 0; i < nl.getLength(); i++) { // creating new HashMap HashMap<String, String> map = new HashMap<String, String>(); Element e = (Element) nl.item(i); // adding each child node to HashMap key => value map.put(TAG_ID, parser.getValue(e, TAG_ID)); map.put(TAG_NAME, parser.getValue(e, TAG_NAME)); map.put(TAG_DETAIL, parser.getValue(e, TAG_DETAIL)); map.put(TAG_MAP, parser.getValue(e, TAG_MAP)); map.put(TAG_MAP_IMAGE, parser.getValue(e, TAG_MAP_IMAGE)); map.put(TAG_ITEM_IMAGE, parser.getValue(e, TAG_ITEM_IMAGE)); System.out.println("Test : " + parser.getValue(e, TAG_ID)); // adding HashList to ArrayList whatToDoInfo.add(map); publishProgress(""); } return null; } @Override protected void onPostExecute(String result) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub super.onPostExecute(result); ProgressBar pb = (ProgressBar) findViewById(R.id.doProgress); pb.setVisibility(pb.INVISIBLE); } } When i run the code it throws the following exception. *java.lang.IllegalStateException: The content of the adapter has changed but ListView did not receive a notification. Make sure the content of your adapter is not modified from a background thread, but only from the UI thread.* But the same code works fine when the progressbar feature is omitted. I can't find where i'm going wrong. can someone please help me ? Thank you in advance.

  • Symfony sfDoctrineGuard plugin sfGuardUser module

    - by Joe Mc
    When using sfDoctrineGuard plugin, it automatically generates the backend administration functionality where I can edit users of the system and assign them permissions. So I visit http://.../backend_dev.php/sf_guard_user/:id/edit where I am presented with the user's information including the available permissions to select. By default the permissions are shown as a multiple select box, HTML follows: <select name="sf_guard_user[permissions_list][]" multiple="multiple" id="sf_guard_user_permissions_list"> <option value="1">Permission1</option> <option value="2">Permission2</option> <option value="3">Permission3</option> <option value="4">Permission4</option> </select> What I would prefer is a list of checkboxes. So I searched around and found that if I add the option "expanded" set to true to the following code: 'permissions_list' => new sfWidgetFormDoctrineChoice(array('multiple' => true, 'model' => 'sfGuardPermission', 'expanded' => true,)), The code is part of this file: lib/form/doctrine/sfDoctrineGuardPlugin/base/BasesfGuardUserForm.class.php. I don't think I should've edited this file (potential for changes to be overwritten should sfDoctrineGuard ever be re-installed) but couldn't think of another way to make it work. The generated HTML is as follows: <ul class="checkbox_list"> <li><input name="sf_guard_user[permissions_list][]" type="checkbox" value="1" id="sf_guard_user_permissions_list_1" />&nbsp;<label for="sf_guard_user_permissions_list_1">Permission1</label></li> <li><input name="sf_guard_user[permissions_list][]" type="checkbox" value="2" id="sf_guard_user_permissions_list_2" />&nbsp;<label for="sf_guard_user_permissions_list_2">Permission2</label></li> <li><input name="sf_guard_user[permissions_list][]" type="checkbox" value="3" id="sf_guard_user_permissions_list_3" />&nbsp;<label for="sf_guard_user_permissions_list_3">Permission3</label></li> <li><input name="sf_guard_user[permissions_list][]" type="checkbox" value="4" id="sf_guard_user_permissions_list_4" />&nbsp;<label for="sf_guard_user_permissions_list_4">Permission4</label></li> </ul> What I need to do now is split up the permissions based on their prefix. For example if I had permissions named user_action1, user_action2, file_action1, file_action2, they would display like: User checkbox (custom label) Action One checkbox Action Two File checkbox (custom label) Action One checkbox Action Two but have no idea where to start with this. It would be easy if there was a template to edit but since I'm dealing with the Forms framework it is my understanding that the templates are generated on the fly - I can see them in my symonfy cache folder. How would I go about this? I started writing my own sfWidgetFormDoctrineChoicePermission class that extends the same class as sfWidgetFormDoctrineChoice but am struggling to edit the rendering functions correctly for the desired output. Is this the correct way to go about this work? I also need to integrate my sfGuardUserProfile model into the edit user page (same as above), I read somwhere that editing the generator.yml file for the sfGuardUser plugin module and simply adding the field names from the sfGuardUserProfile table would make it work, but sadly it doesn't. Any help with any of my queries would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Unable to host WCF service correctly in IIS7

    - by user206736
    I have a WCF Service library written in .NET 4.0. I have a WCF application (in order to host this service in IIS) within the same solution. It contains the WCF library assembly reference and a service.svc file pointing to the service from the library along with a web.config that is a replica of the WCF service library's app.config. The WCF application is set to host the service in IIS7 (the virtual directory has been set). The same solution contains an ASP.NET Webforms solution to which I have added a service reference pointing to the WCF service I hosted in IIS (as mentioned). When i start an instance of this ASP.NET Web application, I get a message saying that "The WCF service has been hosted" and the ASP.NET application can access the data from it correctly. However, when i try and access this data via a service reference added to an MVC 2 Web Application on the same machine in a different solution (pointing to the service hosted in IIS), I get a "The remote server returned an error: (405) Method Not Allowed." protocol exception . However, the MVC application is able to access the service data if I manually invoke an instance of the WCF Application that I was using to host the WCF Service Library from the other solution. I am using VS2010 Beta 2 as my development IDE. I have been stuck with this issue for a while now. Any help would be appreciated. My service config is as follows:- <system.serviceModel> <services> <service behaviorConfiguration="CruxServices.BasicSearchServiceBehavior" name="CruxServices.BasicSearch.BasicSearch"> <endpoint address="" binding="wsHttpBinding" name="WSBindingEndpoint" bindingConfiguration="WSBindingConfig" contract="CruxServices.BasicSearch.Interfaces.IPropertyListFilter"> <identity> <dns value="localhost" /> </identity> </endpoint> <endpoint address="mex" binding="mexHttpBinding" name="MexEndpoint" contract="IMetadataExchange" /> <host> <baseAddresses> <add baseAddress="http://localhost/CruxServices" /> </baseAddresses> </host> </service> </services> <behaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior name="CruxServices.BasicSearchServiceBehavior"> <serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="true" /> <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="false" /> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> <bindings> <wsHttpBinding> <binding name="WSBindingConfig"> <security mode="None"> <transport clientCredentialType="None"/> <message establishSecurityContext="false"/> </security> </binding> </wsHttpBinding> </bindings>

  • C# Request not timing out

    - by Joel Kennedy
    I have this code which runs in a BackgroundWorker, and should make a POST request to the server and get a response. It works fine when it is supposed to work, but when I try to induce a 404 error it doesn't catch the error reporting system. loginProcess.DoWork += delegate(object s, DoWorkEventArgs args) { // loginProcess BackgroundWorker try { // Try to login, if error, report loginProcess.ReportProgress(10); String method = "POST"; String postdata = "postdata=test"; String url = "http://localhost/dev/login.php"; loginProcess.ReportProgress(15); WebRequest rqst = HttpWebRequest.Create(url); rqst.Timeout = 5000; ((HttpWebRequest)rqst).KeepAlive = true; loginProcess.ReportProgress(20); //rqst.Timeout = this.Timeout; // only needed, if you use HTTP AUTH //CredentialCache creds = new CredentialCache(); //creds.Add(new Uri(url), "Basic", new NetworkCredential(this.Uname, this.Pwd)); //rqst.Credentials = creds; rqst.Method = method; if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(postdata)) { //rqst.ContentType = "application/xml"; rqst.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"; loginProcess.ReportProgress(30); byte[] byteData = UTF8Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(postdata); loginProcess.ReportProgress(40); rqst.ContentLength = byteData.Length; loginProcess.ReportProgress(50); using (Stream postStream = rqst.GetRequestStream()) { loginProcess.ReportProgress(50); postStream.Write(byteData, 0, byteData.Length); loginProcess.ReportProgress(60); postStream.Close(); loginProcess.ReportProgress(70); rqst.GetResponse().Close(); rqst.GetRequestStream().Close(); } } loginProcess.ReportProgress(90); using (var response1 = rqst.GetResponse()) { using (var responseStream1 = response1.GetResponseStream()) { using (var reader1 = new StreamReader(responseStream1)) { //StreamReader rsps = new StreamReader(rqst.GetResponse().GetResponseStream()); string strRsps = reader1.ReadToEnd(); loginProcess.ReportProgress(95); loginVars = strRsps; //rqst. //reader1.Close(); //rsps.Dispose(); } args.Result = "SUCCESS"; } } } catch(WebException err) { // Catch error and put into err variable if(err.Status == WebExceptionStatus.ProtocolError) { // If something is wrong with protocol LoginReporting.ErrorName = Convert.ToString(((HttpWebResponse)err.Response).StatusCode); LoginReporting.ErrorDescription = Convert.ToString(((HttpWebResponse)err.Response).StatusDescription); LoginReporting.ErrorNotes = "Error when logging in, Server returned: " + Convert.ToString(((HttpWebResponse)err.Response).StatusCode); LoginReporting.ErrorLocation = "LoginRequest.ProtocolError"; args.Result = "ERROR"; //MessageBox.Show(Convert.ToString(((HttpWebResponse)err.Response).StatusCode)); //MessageBox.Show(Convert.ToString(((HttpWebResponse)err.Response).StatusDescription)); } else { args.Result = "ERROR"; } } catch(Exception err) { // Catch unhandled error LoginReporting.ErrorName = Convert.ToString(err); LoginReporting.ErrorDescription = Convert.ToString(err.Message); LoginReporting.ErrorNotes = "Error when logging in, Server returned: " + Convert.ToString(err.Message); LoginReporting.ErrorLocation = "LoginRequest.ProtocolError"; args.Result = "ERROR"; } }; I have put a timeout on the request but it just doesn't work! Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong here? Thanks

  • Using UUIDs for cheap equals() and hashCode()

    - by Tom McIntyre
    I have an immutable class, TokenList, which consists of a list of Token objects, which are also immutable: @Immutable public final class TokenList { private final List<Token> tokens; public TokenList(List<Token> tokens) { this.tokens = Collections.unmodifiableList(new ArrayList(tokens)); } public List<Token> getTokens() { return tokens; } } I do several operations on these TokenLists that take multiple TokenLists as inputs and return a single TokenList as the output. There can be arbitrarily many TokenLists going in, and each can have arbitrarily many Tokens. These operations are expensive, and there is a good chance that the same operation (ie the same inputs) will be performed multiple times, so I would like to cache the outputs. However, performance is critical, and I am worried about the expense of performing hashCode() and equals() on these objects that may contain arbitrarily many elements (as they are immutable then hashCode could be cached, but equals will still be expensive). This led me to wondering whether I could use a UUID to provide equals() and hashCode() simply and cheaply by making the following updates to TokenList: @Immutable public final class TokenList { private final List<Token> tokens; private final UUID uuid; public TokenList(List<Token> tokens) { this.tokens = Collections.unmodifiableList(new ArrayList(tokens)); this.uuid = UUID.randomUUID(); } public List<Token> getTokens() { return tokens; } public UUID getUuid() { return uuid; } } And something like this to act as a cache key: @Immutable public final class TopicListCacheKey { private final UUID[] uuids; public TopicListCacheKey(TopicList... topicLists) { uuids = new UUID[topicLists.length]; for (int i = 0; i < uuids.length; i++) { uuids[i] = topicLists[i].getUuid(); } } @Override public int hashCode() { return Arrays.hashCode(uuids); } @Override public boolean equals(Object other) { if (other == this) return true; if (other instanceof TopicListCacheKey) return Arrays.equals(uuids, ((TopicListCacheKey) other).uuids); return false; } } I figure that there are 2^128 different UUIDs and I will probably have at most around 1,000,000 TokenList objects active in the application at any time. Given this, and the fact that the UUIDs are used combinatorially in cache keys, it seems that the chances of this producing the wrong result are vanishingly small. Nevertheless, I feel uneasy about going ahead with it as it just feels 'dirty'. Are there any reasons I should not use this system? Will the performance costs of the SecureRandom used by UUID.randomUUID() outweigh the gains (especially since I expect multiple threads to be doing this at the same time)? Are collisions going to be more likely than I think? Basically, is there anything wrong with doing it this way?? Thanks.

  • How can I read the verbose output from a Cmdlet in C# using Exchange Powershell

    - by mrkeith
    Environment: Exchange 2007 sp3 (2003 sp2 mixed mode) Visual Studio 2008, .Net 3.5 Hello, I'm working with an Exchange powershell move-mailbox cmdlet and have noted when I do so from the Exchange Management shell (using the Verbose switch) there is a ton of real-time information provided. To provide a little context, I'm attempting to create a UI application that moves mailboxes similarly to the Exchange Management Console but desire to support an input file and specific server/database destinations for each entry (and threading). Here's roughly what I have at present but I'm not sure if there is an event I need to register for or what... And to be clear, I desire to get this information in real-time so I may update my UI to reflect what's occurring in the move sequence for the appropriate user (pretty much like the native functionality offered in the Management Console). And in case you are wondering, the reason why I'm not content with the Management Console functionality is, I have an algorithm which I'm using to balance users depending on storage limit, Blackberry use, journaling, exception mailbox size etc which demands user be mapped to specific locations... and I do not desire to create many/several move groups for each common destination or to hunt for lists of users individually through the management console UI. I can not seem to find any good documentation or examples of how to tie into reading the verbose messages that are provided within the console using C# (I see value in being able to read this kind of information in many different scenarios). I've explored the Invoke and InvokeAsync methods and the StateChanged & DataReady events but none of these seem to provide the information (verbose comments) that I'm after. Any direction or examples that can be provided will be very appreciated! A code sample which is little more than how I would ordinarily call any other powershell command follows: // config to use ExMgmt shell, create runspace and open it RunspaceConfiguration rsConfig = RunspaceConfiguration.Create(); PSSnapInException snapInException = null; PSSnapInInfo info = rsConfig.AddPSSnapIn("Microsoft.Exchange.Management.PowerShell.Admin", out snapInException); if (snapInException != null) throw snapInException; Runspace runspace = RunspaceFactory.CreateRunspace(rsConfig); try { runspace.Open(); // create a pipeline and feed script text Pipeline pipeline = runspace.CreatePipeline(); string targetDatabase = @"myServer\myStorageGroup\myDB"; string mbxOwner = "[email protected]"; Command myMoveMailbox = new Command("Move-Mailbox", false, false); myMoveMailbox.Parameters.Add("Identity", mbxOwner); myMoveMailbox.Parameters.Add("TargetDatabase", targetDatabase); myMoveMailbox.Parameters.Add("Verbose"); myMoveMailbox.Parameters.Add("ValidateOnly"); myMoveMailbox.Parameters.Add("Confirm", false); pipeline.Commands.Add(myMoveMailbox); System.Collections.ObjectModel.Collection output = null; // these next few lines that are commented out are where I've tried // registering for events and calling asynchronously but this doesn't // seem to get me anywhere closer // //pipeline.StateChanged += new EventHandler(pipeline_StateChanged); //pipeline.Output.DataReady += new EventHandler(Output_DataReady); //pipeline.InvokeAsync(); //pipeline.Input.Close(); //return; tried these variations that are commented out but none seem to be useful output = pipeline.Invoke(); // Check for errors in the pipeline and throw an exception if necessary if (pipeline.Error != null && pipeline.Error.Count 0) { StringBuilder pipelineError = new StringBuilder(); pipelineError.AppendFormat("Error calling Test() Cmdlet. "); foreach (object item in pipeline.Error.ReadToEnd()) pipelineError.AppendFormat("{0}\n", item.ToString()); throw new Exception(pipelineError.ToString()); } foreach (PSObject psObject in output) { // blah, blah, blah // this is normally where I would read details about a particular PS command // but really pertains to a command once it finishes and has nothing to do with // the verbose messages that I'm after... since this part of the methods pertains // to the after-effects of a command having run, I'm suspecting I need to look to // the asynch invoke method but am not certain or knowing how. } } finally { runspace.Close(); } Thanks! • Opening an SQL CE file at runtime with Entity Framework 4

    - by David Veeneman
    I am getting started with Entity Framework 4, and I an creating a demo app as a learning exercise. The app is a simple documentation builder, and it uses a SQL CE store. Each documentation project has its own SQL CE data file, and the user opens one of these files to work on a project. The EDM is very simple. A documentation project is comprised of a list of subjects, each of which has a title, a description, and zero or more notes. So, my entities are Subject, which contains Title and Text properties, and Note, which has Title and Text properties. There is a one-to-many association from Subject to Note. I am trying to figure out how to open an SQL CE data file. A data file must match the schema of the SQL CE database created by EF4's Create Database Wizard, and I will implement a New File use case elsewhere in the app to implement that requirement. Right now, I am just trying to get an existing data file open in the app. I have reproduced my existing 'Open File' code below. I have set it up as a static service class called File Services. The code isn't working quite yet, but there is enough to show what I am trying to do. I am trying to hold the ObjectContext open for entity object updates, disposing it when the file is closed. So, here is my question: Am I on the right track? What do I need to change to make this code work with EF4? Is there an example of how to do this properly? Thanks for your help. • Tiered Design With Analytical Widgets - Is This Code Smell?

    - by Repo Man
    The idea I'm playing with right now is having a multi-leveled "tier" system of analytical objects which perform a certain computation on a common object and then create a new set of analytical objects depending on their outcome. The newly created analytical objects will then get their own turn to run and optionally create more analytical objects, and so on and so on. The point being that the child analytical objects will always execute after the objects that created them, which is relatively important. The whole apparatus will be called by a single thread so I'm not concerned with thread safety at the moment. As long as a certain base condition is met, I don't see this being an unstable design but I'm still a little bit queasy about it. Is this some serious code smell or should I go ahead and implement it this way? Is there a better way? Here is a sample implementation: namespace WidgetTier { public class Widget { private string _name; public string Name { get { return _name; } } private TierManager _tm; private static readonly Random random = new Random(); static Widget() { } public Widget(string name, TierManager tm) { _name = name; _tm = tm; } public void DoMyThing() { if (random.Next(1000) > 1) { _tm.Add(); } } } //NOT thread-safe! public class TierManager { private Dictionary<int, List<Widget>> _tiers; private int _tierCount = 0; private int _currentTier = -1; private int _childCount = 0; public TierManager() { _tiers = new Dictionary<int, List<Widget>>(); } public void Add() { if (_currentTier + 1 >= _tierCount) { _tierCount++; _tiers.Add(_currentTier + 1, new List<Widget>()); } _tiers[_currentTier + 1].Add(new Widget(string.Format("({0})", _childCount), this)); _childCount++; } //Dangerous? public void Sweep() { _currentTier = 0; while (_currentTier < _tierCount) //_tierCount will start at 1 but keep increasing because child objects will keep adding more tiers. { foreach (Widget w in _tiers[_currentTier]) { w.DoMyThing(); } _currentTier++; } } public void PrintAll() { for (int t = 0; t < _tierCount; t++) { Console.Write("Tier #{0}: ", t); foreach (Widget w in _tiers[t]) { Console.Write(w.Name + " "); } Console.WriteLine(); } } } class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { TierManager tm = new TierManager(); for (int c = 0; c < 10; c++) { tm.Add(); //create base widgets; } tm.Sweep(); tm.PrintAll(); Console.ReadLine(); } } }

  • spring3.0 mvc problem(The requested resource is not Available)

    - by Daniel
    Hi, I am a newbie for Spring MVC 3.0 and trying to write a sample webapp to get the feels of it. I am able to get url to invoke my associated controller, but not able to foward the request from which to my jsp resource as indicated by the output on the browser: The requested resource (/Spring30HelloWorld/helloworldcontroller) is not available. A word of suggestion on fixing the issue would be appreciated!! Please refer below for my code set up. • swfobject weird behavior

    - by David
    Hi All, I'm using swfobject to embed my flash. It's doing weird things. I've created a simple textfield using FlexBuilder. It's an AS3 project, which extends Sprite. I've set its width to be 640 and height to 450. Then, in the swfobject parameters of the page, I've also set 640 x 450. I've made the background nice and red and ugly so you can see it. :) http://www.brighttext.com/flash/TextFieldSetFormat.html It seems to be the right dimensions. BUT I've got a textfield which is supposed to be almost the same size and height. This runs fine in FlexBuilder (is the right size) but is all messed up once I add swfobject Can anyone see what is happening? EDIT NOTE: I just looked at it and it looks ok. But then I refreshed the page and the textfield is postage-stamp size (again -- this is the original behavior I saw.) It's now looking OK in firefox but not in IE8. Flash is supposed to look the same in all browsers !!?? AS3 code: package { import flash.display.Sprite; import flash.text.TextField; import flash.text.TextFormat; import flash.text.Font; [SWF(width="640", height="450", backgroundColor="#FFFFFF", frameRate="30")] public class TextFieldSetFormat extends Sprite { [Embed(source='C:/WINDOWS/Fonts/ArialBD.TTF', fontWeight = 'bold', fontName='ArialBold')] [Embed(source='C:/WINDOWS/Fonts/Arial.TTF', fontWeight = 'regular', fontName='Arial')] public function TextFieldSetFormat() { var tf2:TextFormat = new TextFormat(); tf2.size = 16; tf2.font = "Arial"; Font.registerFont(_VerdanaFontBold); Font.registerFont(_VerdanaFont); var pad:Number = 10; var brightTextField:TextField = new TextField; brightTextField.backgroundColor = 0xDDF3B2; brightTextField.background = true; brightTextField.embedFonts = true; brightTextField.border = true; brightTextField.defaultTextFormat = tf2; brightTextField.wordWrap = true; brightTextField.multiline = true; brightTextField.width = stage.stageWidth - (4 * pad); brightTextField.height = stage.stageHeight - (3 * pad); brightTextField.x = 2*pad; brightTextField.y = 2*pad; brightTextField.text = "Dear Senators, I have become concerned over the idea that some in the Senate will oppose the public option because of a group of wild-eyed, overbearing but misinformed ideologues. These people mistakenly equate insurance reform with Socialism and call our first African-American President unprintable epithets. This is unacceptable. The public option is the choice of more than 70% of Americans, a majority of the House and a great many opinion leaders. Passing insurance reform without a public option persists the current broken system. I am aware that many Senators would prefer to pass a reform bill with bipartisan support. But we cannot allow this critical debate to be hijacked by extremists or corporate profiteers. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you."; addChild(brightTextField); } } }

  • Is SQL Server DRI (ON DELETE CASCADE) slow?

    - by Aaronaught
    I've been analyzing a recurring "bug report" (perf issue) in one of our systems related to a particularly slow delete operation. Long story short: It seems that the CASCADE DELETE keys were largely responsible, and I'd like to know (a) if this makes sense, and (b) why it's the case. We have a schema of, let's say, widgets, those being at the root of a large graph of related tables and related-to-related tables and so on. To be perfectly clear, deleting from this table is actively discouraged; it is the "nuclear option" and users are under no illusions to the contrary. Nevertheless, it sometimes just has to be done. The schema looks something like this: Widgets | +--- Anvils (1:1) | | | +--- AnvilTestData (1:N) | +--- WidgetHistory (1:N) | +--- WidgetHistoryDetails (1:N) Nothing too scary, really. A Widget can be different types, an Anvil is a special type, so that relationship is 1:1 (or more accurately 1:0..1). Then there's a large amount of data - perhaps thousands of rows of AnvilTestData per Anvil collected over time, dealing with hardness, corrosion, exact weight, hammer compatibility, usability issues, and impact tests with cartoon heads. Then every Widget has a long, boring history of various types of transactions - production, inventory moves, sales, defect investigations, RMAs, repairs, customer complaints, etc. There might be 10-20k details for a single widget, or none at all, depending on its age. So, unsurprisingly, there's a CASCADE DELETE relationship at every level here. If a Widget needs to be deleted, it means something's gone terribly wrong and we need to erase any records of that widget ever existing, including its history, test data, etc. Again, nuclear option. Relations are all indexed, statistics are up to date. Normal queries are fast. The system tends to hum along pretty smoothly for everything except deletes. Getting to the point here, finally, for various reasons we only allow deleting one widget at a time, so a delete statement would look like this: DELETE FROM Widgets WHERE WidgetID = @WidgetID Pretty simple, innocuous looking delete... that takes over 2 minutes to run, for a widget with no data! After slogging through execution plans I was finally able to pick out the AnvilTestData and WidgetHistoryDetails deletes as the sub-operations with the highest cost. So I experimented with turning off the CASCADE (but keeping the actual FK, just setting it to NO ACTION) and rewriting the script as something very much like the following: DECLARE @AnvilID int SELECT @AnvilID = AnvilID FROM Anvils WHERE WidgetID = @WidgetID DELETE FROM AnvilTestData WHERE AnvilID = @AnvilID DELETE FROM WidgetHistory WHERE HistoryID IN ( SELECT HistoryID FROM WidgetHistory WHERE WidgetID = @WidgetID) DELETE FROM Widgets WHERE WidgetID = @WidgetID Both of these "optimizations" resulted in significant speedups, each one shaving nearly a full minute off the execution time, so that the original 2-minute deletion now takes about 5-10 seconds - at least for new widgets, without much history or test data. Just to be absolutely clear, there is still a CASCADE from WidgetHistory to WidgetHistoryDetails, where the fanout is highest, I only removed the one originating from Widgets. Further "flattening" of the cascade relationships resulted in progressively less dramatic but still noticeable speedups, to the point where deleting a new widget was almost instantaneous once all of the cascade deletes to larger tables were removed and replaced with explicit deletes. I'm using DBCC DROPCLEANBUFFERS and DBCC FREEPROCCACHE before each test. I've disabled all triggers that might be causing further slowdowns (although those would show up in the execution plan anyway). And I'm testing against older widgets, too, and noticing a significant speedup there as well; deletes that used to take 5 minutes now take 20-40 seconds. Now I'm an ardent supporter of the "SELECT ain't broken" philosophy, but there just doesn't seem to be any logical explanation for this behaviour other than crushing, mind-boggling inefficiency of the CASCADE DELETE relationships. So, my questions are: Is this a known issue with DRI in SQL Server? (I couldn't seem to find any references to this sort of thing on Google or here in SO; I suspect the answer is no.) If not, is there another explanation for the behaviour I'm seeing? If it is a known issue, why is it an issue, and are there better workarounds I could be using?

  • The best cross platform (portable) arbitrary precision math library

    - by Siu Ching Pong - Asuka Kenji
    Dear ninjas / hackers / wizards, I'm looking for a good arbitrary precision math library in C or C++. Could you please give me some advices / suggestions? The primary requirements: It MUST handle arbitrarily big integers (my primary interest is on integers). In case that you don't know what the word arbitrarily big means, imagine something like 100000! (the factorial of 100000). The precision MUST NOT NEED to be specified during library initialization / object creation. The precision should ONLY be constrained by the available resources of the system. It SHOULD utilize the full power of the platform, and should handle "small" numbers natively. That means on a 64-bit platform, calculating 2^33 + 2^32 should use the available 64-bit CPU instructions. The library SHOULD NOT calculate this in the same way as it does with 2^66 + 2^65 on the same platform. It MUST handle addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), integer division (/), remainder (%), power (**), increment (++), decrement (--), gcd(), factorial(), and other common integer arithmetic calculations efficiently. Ability to handle functions like sqrt() (square root), log() (logarithm) that do not produce integer results is a plus. Ability to handle symbolic computations is even better. Here are what I found so far: Java's BigInteger and BigDecimal class: I have been using these so far. I have read the source code, but I don't understand the math underneath. It may be based on theories / algorithms that I have never learnt. The built-in integer type or in core libraries of bc / Python / Ruby / Haskell / Lisp / Erlang / OCaml / PHP / some other languages: I have ever used some of these, but I have no idea on which library they are using, or which kind of implementation they are using. What I have already known: Using a char as a decimal digit, and a char* as a decimal string and do calculations on the digits using a for-loop. Using an int (or a long int, or a long long) as a basic "unit" and an array of it as an arbitrary long integer, and do calculations on the elements using a for-loop. Booth's multiplication algorithm What I don't know: Printing the binary array mentioned above in decimal without using naive methods. Example of a naive method: (1) add the bits from the lowest to the highest: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, ... (2) use a char* string mentioned above to store the intermediate decimal results). What I appreciate: Good comparisons on GMP, MPFR, decNumber (or other libraries that are good in your opinion). Good suggestions on books / articles that I should read. For example, an illustration with figures on how a un-naive arbitrarily long binary to decimal conversion algorithm works is good. Any help. Please DO NOT answer this question if: you think using a double (or a long double, or a long long double) can solve this problem easily. If you do think so, it means that you don't understand the issue under discussion. you have no experience on arbitrary precision mathematics. Thank you in advance! Asuka Kenji

  • How to configure Spring Security PasswordComparisonAuthenticator

    - by denlab
    I can bind to an embedded ldap server on my local machine with the following bean: <b:bean id="secondLdapProvider" class="org.springframework.security.ldap.authentication.LdapAuthenticationProvider"> <b:constructor-arg> <b:bean class="org.springframework.security.ldap.authentication.BindAuthenticator"> <b:constructor-arg ref="contextSource" /> <b:property name="userSearch"> <b:bean id="userSearch" class="org.springframework.security.ldap.search.FilterBasedLdapUserSearch"> <b:constructor-arg index="0" value="ou=people"/> <b:constructor-arg index="1" value="(uid={0})"/> <b:constructor-arg index="2" ref="contextSource" /> </b:bean> </b:property> </b:bean> </b:constructor-arg> <b:constructor-arg> <b:bean class="com.company.security.ldap.BookinLdapAuthoritiesPopulator"> </b:bean> </b:constructor-arg> </b:bean> however, when I try to authenticate with a PasswordComparisonAuthenticator it repeatedly fails on a bad credentials event: <b:bean id="ldapAuthProvider" class="org.springframework.security.ldap.authentication.LdapAuthenticationProvider"> <b:constructor-arg> <b:bean class="org.springframework.security.ldap.authentication.PasswordComparisonAuthenticator"> <b:constructor-arg ref="contextSource" /> <b:property name="userDnPatterns"> <b:list> <b:value>uid={0},ou=people</b:value> </b:list> </b:property> </b:bean> </b:constructor-arg> <b:constructor-arg> <b:bean class="com.company.security.ldap.BookinLdapAuthoritiesPopulator"> </b:bean> </b:constructor-arg> </b:bean> Through debugging, I can see that the authenticate method picks up the DN from the ldif file, but then tries to compare the passwords, however, it's using the LdapShaPasswordEncoder (the default one) where the password is stored in plaintext in the file, and this is where the authentication fails. Here's the authentication manager bean referencing the preferred authentication bean: <authentication-manager> <authentication-provider ref="ldapAuthProvider"/> <authentication-provider user-service-ref="userDetailsService"> <password-encoder hash="md5" base64="true"> <salt-source system-wide="secret"/> </password-encoder> </authentication-provider> </authentication-manager> On a side note, whether I set the password-encoder on ldapAuthProvider to plaintext or just leave it blank, doesn't seem to make a difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • Tomcat stops responding to JK requests

    - by Bruno Reis
    Hello. I have a nasty issue with load-balanced Tomcat servers that are hanging up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The system I'm running Tomcat 6.0.26 on HotSpot Server 14.3-b01 (Java 1.6.0_17-b04) on three servers sitting behind another server that acts as load balancer. The load balancer runs Apache (2.2.8-1) + MOD_JK (1.2.25). All of the servers are running Ubuntu 8.04. The Tomcat's have 2 connectors configured: an AJP one, and a HTTP one. The AJP is to be used with the load balancer, while the HTTP is used by the dev team to directly connect to a chosen server (if we have a reason to do so). I have Lambda Probe 1.7b installed on the Tomcat servers to help me diagnose and fix the problem soon to be described. The problem Here's the problem: after about 1 day the application servers are up, JK Status Manager starts reporting status ERR for, say, Tomcat2. It will simply get stuck on this state, and the only fix I've found so far is to ssh the box and restart Tomcat. I must also mention that JK Status Manager takes a lot longer to refresh when there's a Tomcat server in this state. Finally, the "Busy" count of the stuck Tomcat on JK Status Manager is always high, and won't go down per se -- I must restart the Tomcat server, wait, then reset the worker on JK. Analysis Since I have 2 connectors on each Tomcat (AJP and HTTP), I still can connect to the application through the HTTP one. The application works just fine like this, very, very fast. That is perfectly normal, since I'm the only one using this server (as JK stopped delegating requests to this Tomcat). To try to better understand the problem, I've taken a thread dump from a Tomcat which is not responding anymore, and from another one that has been restarted recently (say, 1 hour before). The instance that is responding normally to JK shows most of the TP-ProcessorXXX threads in "Runnable" state, with the following stack trace: java.net.SocketInputStream.socketRead0 ( native code ) java.net.SocketInputStream.read ( SocketInputStream.java:129 ) java.io.BufferedInputStream.fill ( BufferedInputStream.java:218 ) java.io.BufferedInputStream.read1 ( BufferedInputStream.java:258 ) java.io.BufferedInputStream.read ( BufferedInputStream.java:317 ) org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket.read ( ChannelSocket.java:621 ) org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket.receive ( ChannelSocket.java:559 ) org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket.processConnection ( ChannelSocket.java:686 ) org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket$SocketConnection.runIt ( ChannelSocket.java:891 ) org.apache.tomcat.util.threads.ThreadPool$ControlRunnable.run ( ThreadPool.java:690 ) java.lang.Thread.run ( Thread.java:619 ) The instance that is stuck show most (all?) of the TP-ProcessorXXX threads in "Waiting" state. These have the following stack trace: java.lang.Object.wait ( native code ) java.lang.Object.wait ( Object.java:485 ) org.apache.tomcat.util.threads.ThreadPool$ControlRunnable.run ( ThreadPool.java:662 ) java.lang.Thread.run ( Thread.java:619 ) I don't know of the internals of Tomcat, but I would infer that the "Waiting" threads are simply threads sitting on a thread pool. So, if they are threads waiting inside of a thread pool, why wouldn't Tomcat put them to work on processing requests from JK? Solution? So, as I've stated before, the only fix I've found is to stop the Tomcat instance, stop the JK worker, wait the latter's busy count slowly go down, start Tomcat again, and enable the JK worker once again. What is causing this problem? How should I further investigate it? What can I do to solve it? Thanks in advance.

  • Error in python - don't understand

    - by Jasper
    Hi, I'm creating a game, and am quite new to Python generally. I created a function 'descriptionGenerator()' which generates a description for characters and objects either randomly or using variables passed to it. • NullPointerException in ItemizedOverlay.getIndexToDraw

    - by lyricsboy
    I have a relatively simple MapActivity that I'm trying to make display a list of "camps" within a given map region. I've created a custom subclass of OverlayItem called CampOverlayItem, a custom ItemizedOverlay called CampsOverlay that returns CampOverlayItems, and of course a MapActivity subclass that populates the map. I'm pulling the overlay data from a database using an AsyncTask as created in my activity. The AsyncTask is triggered from a ViewTreeObserver.OnGlobalLayoutListener attached to the MapView. In the onPostExecute method of the AsyncTask, I create a new instance of my CampsOverlay class and pass it a list of the camps returned from the database (which are fetched in doInBackground). I then call: mapView.getOverlays().add(newOverlay); where newOverlay is the CampsOverlay I just created. All of this code runs without error, but when the Map tries to draw itself, I get a NullPointerException with the following stack trace: java.lang.NullPointerException at com.google.android.maps.ItemizedOverlay.getIndexToDraw(ItemizedOverlay.java: 211) at com.google.android.maps.ItemizedOverlay.draw(ItemizedOverlay.java:240) at com.google.android.maps.Overlay.draw(Overlay.java:179) at com.google.android.maps.OverlayBundle.draw(OverlayBundle.java: 42) at com.google.android.maps.MapView.onDraw(MapView.java:476) at android.view.View.draw(View.java:6274) at android.view.ViewGroup.drawChild(ViewGroup.java:1526) at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchDraw(ViewGroup.java:1256) at android.view.ViewGroup.drawChild(ViewGroup.java:1524) at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchDraw(ViewGroup.java:1256) at android.view.View.draw(View.java:6277) at android.widget.FrameLayout.draw(FrameLayout.java:352) at android.view.ViewGroup.drawChild(ViewGroup.java:1526) at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchDraw(ViewGroup.java:1256) at android.view.ViewGroup.drawChild(ViewGroup.java:1524) at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchDraw(ViewGroup.java:1256) at android.view.ViewGroup.drawChild(ViewGroup.java:1524) at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchDraw(ViewGroup.java:1256) at android.view.ViewGroup.drawChild(ViewGroup.java:1524) at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchDraw(ViewGroup.java:1256) at android.view.ViewGroup.drawChild(ViewGroup.java:1524) at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchDraw(ViewGroup.java:1256) at android.view.View.draw(View.java:6277) at android.widget.FrameLayout.draw(FrameLayout.java:352) at android.view.ViewGroup.drawChild(ViewGroup.java:1526) at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchDraw(ViewGroup.java:1256) at android.view.View.draw(View.java:6277) at android.widget.FrameLayout.draw(FrameLayout.java:352) at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow $DecorView.draw(PhoneWindow.java:1883) at android.view.ViewRoot.draw(ViewRoot.java:1332) at android.view.ViewRoot.performTraversals(ViewRoot.java:1097) at android.view.ViewRoot.handleMessage(ViewRoot.java:1613) at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4203) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit $MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:791) at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:549) at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) Because it seems particularly relevant, here is the code for my ItemizedOverlay subclass: public class CampsOverlay extends ItemizedOverlay<CampOverlayItem> { private ArrayList<Camp> camps = null; public CampsOverlay(Drawable defaultMarker, ArrayList<Camp> theCamps) { super(defaultMarker); this.camps = theCamps; } @Override protected CampOverlayItem createItem(int i) { Camp camp = camps.get(i); CampOverlayItem item = new CampOverlayItem(camp); return item; } @Override protected boolean onTap(int index) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub return super.onTap(index); } @Override public int size() { return camps.size(); } } Does anyone have any idea what could be happening here? I've attempted to verify that everything I have control over is non-null. I can provide more code if necessary.

  • jQuery AJAX (google PageRank)

    - by RobertPitt
    Hey guys, I need a little help.. iv'e been developing a Jqery plug-in to get the page ranks of urls on a website using XHR, The problem is when requesting the rank from google servers the page is returned no content, but if i use an inspector and get the url that was requests and go to it via my browser the pageranks are shown. so it must be something with headers but its just got me puzzled. Heres some source code but i have removed several aspects that are not needed to review. pagerank.plugin.js ( $.fn.PageRank = function(callback) { var _library = new Object(); //Creat the system library _library.parseUrl = function(a) { var b = {}; var a = a || ''; /* * parse the url to extract its parts */ if (a = a.match(/((s?ftp|https?):\/\/){1}([^\/:]+)?(:([0-9]+))?([^\?#]+)?(\?([^#]+))?(#(.+))?/)) { b.scheme = a[2] ? a[2] : "http"; b.host = a[3] ? a[3] : null; b.port = a[5] ? a[5] : null; b.path = a[6] ? a[6] : null; b.args = a[8] ? a[8] : null; b.anchor = a[10] ? a[10] : null } return b } _library.ValidUrl = function(url) { var b = true; return b = url.host === undefined ? false : url.scheme != "http" && url.scheme != "https" ? false : url.host == "localhost" ? false : true } _library.toHex = function(a){ return (a < 16 ?   • Servlet Filter: Socket need to be referenced in doFilter()

    - by Craig m
    Right now I have a filter that has the sockets opened in the init and for some reason when I open them in doFilter() it doesn't work with the server app right so I have no choice but to put it in the init I need to be able to reference the outSide.println("test"); in doFilter() so I can send that to my server app every time the if statement it in is is tripped. Heres my code: import java.net.*; import java.io.*; import java.util.*; import javax.servlet.*; import javax.servlet.http.*; public final class IEFilter implements Filter { public void doFilter(ServletRequest request, ServletResponse response, FilterChain chain) throws IOException, ServletException { String browser = ""; String blockInfo; String address = request.getRemoteAddr(); if(((HttpServletRequest)request).getHeader ("User-Agent").indexOf("MSIE") >= 0) { browser = "Internet Explorer"; } if(browser.equals("Internet Explorer")) { BufferedWriter fW = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter("C://logs//IElog.rtf")); blockInfo = "Blocked IE user from:" + address; response.setContentType("text/html"); PrintWriter out = response.getWriter(); out.println("<HTML>"); out.println("<HEAD>"); out.println("<TITLE>"); out.println("This page is not available - JNetProtect"); out.println("</TITLE>"); out.println("</HEAD>"); out.println("<BODY>"); out.println("<center><H1>Error 403</H1>"); out.println("<br>"); out.println("<br>"); out.println("<H1>Access Denied</H1>"); out.println("<br>"); out.println("Sorry, that resource may not be accessed now."); out.println("<br>"); out.println("<br>"); out.println("<hr />"); out.println("<i>Page Filtered By JNetProtect</i>"); out.println("</BODY>"); out.println("</HTML>"); //init.outSide.println("Blocked and Internet Explorer user"); fW.write(blockInfo); fW.newLine(); fW.close(); } else { chain.doFilter(request, response); } } public void destroy() { outsocket.close(); outSide.close(); } public void init(FilterConfig filterConfig) { try { ServerSocket fs; Socket outsocket; PrintWriter outSide ; outsocket = new Socket("Localhost", 1337); outSide = new PrintWriter(outsocket.getOutputStream(), true); }catch (Exception e){ System.out.println("error with this connection"); e.printStackTrace();} } }

  • ASP.net User Controls and business entities

    - by Chris
    Hi all, I am currently developing some user controls so that I can use them at several places within a project. One control is a about editing a list of addresses for a customer. Since this needs to be done at several places within the project I want to make it a simple user control. The user control contains a repeater control. By default the repeater displays one address item to be edited. If more addresses need to be added, the user can click on a button to append an additional address to be entered. The user control should work for creating new addresses as well as editing existing ones. The address business entity looks something like this: public class Address { public string Street { get; set; } public City City { get; set; } public Address(string street, City city) { Check.NotNullOrEmpty(street); Check.NotNull(city); Street = street; City = city; } } As you can see an address can only be instantiated if there is a street and a city. Now my idea was that the user control exposes a collection property called Addresses. The getter of this property collects the addresses from the repeater and return it in a collection. The setter would databind the addresses to be edited to the repeater. Like this: public partial class AddressEditControl : System.Web.UI.UserControl { public IEnumerable<Address> Addresses { get { IList<Address> addresses = new List<Address>(); // collect items from repeater and create addresses foreach (RepeaterItem item in addressRepeater.Items) { // collect values from repeater item addresses.Add(new Address(street, city)); } return addresses; } set { addressRepeater.DataSource = value; addressRepeater.DataBind(); } } } First I liked this approach since it is object oriented makes it very easy to reuse the control. But at some place in my project I wanted to use this control so a user could enter some addresses. And I wanted to pre-fill the street input field of each repeater item since I had that data so the user doesn't need to enter it all by his self. Now the problem is that this user control only accepts addresses in a valid state (since the address object has only one constructor). So I cannot do: IList<Addresses> addresses = new List<Address>(); addresses.Add(new Address("someStreet", null)); // i dont know the city yet (user has to find it out) addressControl.Addresses = addresses; So the above is not possible since I would get an error from address because the city is null. Now my question: How would I create such a control? ;) I was thinking about using an Address DTO instead of a real address, so it can later be mapped to an address. That way I can pass in and out an address collection which addresses don't need to be valid. Or did I misunderstood the way user controls work? Are there any best practices?

  • BroadcastReceiver not reading stored value from SharedPreferences

    - by bobby123
    In my app I have a broadcast receiver that turns on GPS upon receiving a set string of text. In the onLocationChanged method, I want to pass the GPS data and a value from my shared preferences to a thread in a string. I have the thread writing to log and can see all the GPS values in the string but the last value from my shared preferences is just showing up as 'prefPhoneNum' which I initialised the string to at the beginning of the receiver class. I have the same code to read the prefPhoneNum from shared preferences in the main class and it works there, can anyone see what I might be doing wrong? public class SmsReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver implements LocationListener { LocationManager lm; LocationListener loc; public SharedPreferences sharedpreferences; public static final String US = "usersettings"; public String prefPhoneNum = "prefPhoneNum"; @Override public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) { sharedpreferences = context.getSharedPreferences(US, Context.MODE_PRIVATE); prefPhoneNum = sharedpreferences.getString("prefPhoneNum" , ""); lm = (LocationManager)context.getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE); loc = new SmsReceiver(); //---get the SMS message passed in--- Bundle bundle = intent.getExtras(); SmsMessage[] msgs = null; String str = ""; if (bundle != null) { //---retrieve the SMS message received--- Object[] pdus = (Object[]) bundle.get("pdus"); msgs = new SmsMessage[pdus.length]; for (int i=0; i<msgs.length; i++) { msgs[i] = SmsMessage.createFromPdu((byte[])pdus[i]); str += msgs[i].getMessageBody().toString() + "\n"; } Toast.makeText(context, str, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); //Display SMS if ((msgs[0].getMessageBody().toString().equals("Enable")) || (msgs[0].getMessageBody().toString().equals("enable"))) { enableGPS(); } else { /* Do Nothing*/ } } } public void enableGPS() { //new CountDownTimer(10000, 1000) { //10 seconds new CountDownTimer(300000, 1000) { //300 secs = 5 mins public void onTick(long millisUntilFinished) { lm.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 0, 0, loc); } public void onFinish() { lm.removeUpdates(loc); } }.start(); } @Override public void onLocationChanged(Location location) { String s = ""; s += location.getLatitude() + "\n"; s += location.getLongitude() + "\n"; s += location.getAltitude() + "\n"; s += location.getAccuracy() + "\n" + prefPhoneNum; Thread cThread = new Thread(new SocketsClient(s)); cThread.start(); } @Override public void onProviderDisabled(String provider) { } @Override public void onProviderEnabled(String provider) { } @Override public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras) { } } Here is the logcat for when the application shuts - D/LocationManager( 3912): requestLocationUpdates: provider = gps, listener = accel.working.TrackGPS@4628bce0 D/GpsLocationProvider( 96): setMinTime 0 D/GpsLocationProvider( 96): startNavigating D/GpsLocationProvider( 96): TTFF: 3227 D/AndroidRuntime( 3912): Shutting down VM W/dalvikvm( 3912): threadid=1: thread exiting with uncaught exception (group=0x400259f8) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): FATAL EXCEPTION: main E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): java.lang.NullPointerException E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at android.content.ContextWrapper.getSharedPreferences(ContextWrapper.java:146) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at accel.working.TrackGPS.onLocationChanged(TrackGPS.java:63) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at android.location.LocationManager$ListenerTransport._handleMessage(LocationManager.java:191) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at android.location.LocationManager$ListenerTransport.access$000(LocationManager.java:124) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at android.location.LocationManager$ListenerTransport$1.handleMessage(LocationManager.java:140) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:144) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4937) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:868) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:626) E/AndroidRuntime( 3912): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method)

  • Which option do you like the most?

    - by spderosso
    I need to show a list of movies ordered by the date they were registered in the system and the amount of comments users have made about them. E.g: Title | Register Date | # of comments Gladiator | 02-01-2010 | 30 Matrix | 01-02-2010 | 20 It is a web application that follows MVC. So, I have the object "Movie", there is a MovieManager interface that is used for retrieving/persisting data to the database and a servlet RecentlyAddedMovies.java that forwards to a .jsp to render the list. I will explain my problem by showing an example of how I am doing another similar task: Showing top ranked movies. Regarding the MovieManager: /** * Returns a collection of the x best-ranked movies * @param x the amount of movies to return * @return A collection of movies * @throws SQLException */ public Collection<Movie> getTopX(int x) throws SQLException; The servlet: public class Top5 extends HttpServlet{ @Override protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp) throws ServletException, IOException { MovieManager movManager = JDBCMovieManager.getInstance(); try { req.setAttribute("movies", movManager.getTopX(5)); } catch (SQLException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } req.getRequestDispatcher("listMovies.jsp").forward(req, resp); } } And the listMovies.jsp has is some place something like: <c:forEach var="movie" items="${movies}"> ... <c:out value="${movie.title}"/> ... </c:forEach> The difference between the top5 problem and the problem I am trying to solve is that with the top5 thing all the data I needed to show in the view where part of the "Movie" object, so the MovieManager simply returned a Collection of Movies. Now, the MovieManager must retrieve an ordered list of (Movie, # of comments). The Movie object has a collection of Comment associated but of course, it lacks an instance variable with the length of that collection. The following things came into my mind: a) Create a MovieView object or something like that, that is only used by the "View" and "Controller" layer of the MVC which is not part of the "Model" in the sense that is used only for easy retrieval and display of information. This MovieView object will have a title, registerDate and # of Comments so the thing would look something like this: /** * Returns a collection of the x most recently added movies * @param x the amount of movies to return * @return A collection of movies * @throws SQLException */ public Collection<Movie2> getXRecentlyAddedMovies(int x) throws SQLException; The .jsp: <c:forEach var="movie2" items="${movies2}"> ... <c:out value="${movie2.title}"/> <c:out value="${movie2.registerDate}"/> <c:out value="${movie2.noOfComments}"/> ... </c:forEach> b) Add to the Collection the movie has, empty Comments (there is no actual need to retrieve all the comment data from the database) so that the comment's collection.size() will show the number of comments that movie has. (This sounds horrible to me) c) Add to the "Movie" object an instance field noOfComments with the setter and getter that will help with this type of cases even if, looking only from the object point of view, it is a redundant field since it already has a Collection that is ".size()"able . d) Make the MovieManager retrieve some structure like a Map or a Collection of a two component array or something like that that will contain both a Movie object and the associated number of comments and with JSLT iterate over it and show it accordingly.
