• Start synergy on boot of Ubuntu 12.04

  I am having problems getting synergy to start on boot of my Ubuntu 12.04 desktop machine. I followed the troubleshooting at Start synergy on boot? completely, but I still couldn't get synergy to start on boot up. This is exactly what is being told to startup with ubuntu assuming I did the lightdm modification correctly. However, I don't see any synergy running, and I certainly can't control the other computer. Btw, I changed my ip in the log from what it actually is ~ Is this a necessary precaution or are ips local to the network? What does knowing my IP allow someone to do?

• Read-only filesystem Recovery Mode not working

  I have seen other posts of this before, but they didn't help. In short, today I was trying to play Colobot on my Ubuntu Trusty computer, when I tried to access the directory the game was in by terminal, bash warned me that the disk was in a read-only state. I'm like, ok... So I reboot and go into recovery mode, there I do fsck, it finds errors, but apparently fails to fix them. At that point I was getting annoyed and searched the internet, once I found an answer I ran the grub and dpkg options in recovery mode, recovery mode said it was read/write, but when I boot in, I get the same thing, read-only. So I reboot into recovery mode, and tada! It's read-only again. I can't think of anything else to do, as the other people who had the same problems had them fixed by the steps I did. I got all my important files backed up to both a seperate partition and a seperate computer, so no worries there. I just need help getting this to work, as my computer might as well be a brick if I cant do f/a on it

• Libraries for eclipse with CCSv5 from Texas Instruments

  My system is Ubuntu 11.10 64bit and i have to run a 32bit version of eclipse to use the TI plugins for CCSv5 but it doesn't work. I tried to run eclipse in a 62bit java environment but it doesn't even start. Now I got "java version "1.6.0_30"" from Sun in 32bit and now eclipse starts but can't use the TI plug ins and I get the following errors in bash: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/menuproxies/libappmenu.so: falsche ELF-Klasse: ELFCLASS64 /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgvfsdbus.so: falsche ELF-Klasse: ELFCLASS64 Failed to load module: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgvfsdbus.so and this in a popup-window when Itry to use the plugin: The selected wizard could not be started. • Dryad and DryadLINQ from MSR

  Microsoft Research (MSR) researches technologies, incubates projects which many times result in technology that looks like a ready-to-use product (but it is important to understand that these are not the same as products built by the various… actual product teams here at Microsoft). A very popular MSR project has been DryadLINQ, which itself builds on Dryad. To learn more follow the project pages I just linked to and I also recommend this 1-hour channel 9 video. If you only have 3 minutes, watch this great elevator pitch instead. You can also stay tuned on the official blog, which includes a post that refers to internal adoption e.g by Bing, a quick DryadLINQ code example, and some history on how DryadLINQ generalizes the MapReduce pattern and makes it accessible to regular programmers (see this post and that post). Essentially, the DryadLINQ framework (building on the Dryad runtime) allows developers to re-use their LINQ skills for creating/generating programs that process large multi-gigabyte/terabyte datasets across 100s-1000s of machines. One way to think about it is that just as Parallel LINQ allows LINQ developers to seamlessly use multiple cores from a single process on a single machine, DryadLINQ allows LINQ developers to seamlessly use multiple machines for their data parallel algorithms. In the former scenario the motivation was speed of execution, in the latter it is speed of execution AND processing large datasets that simply don't fit on a single machine. Whenever I hear about execution of parallel code on multiple machines on the Microsoft platform, I immediately think of Windows HPC Server. • $TERM set to "dumb" causes problems with suspend

  I've just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. So far I love it, everything seems just so much snappier. Now I just have one minor issue. When I try to suspend my laptop, it doesn't work - instead it fades out the screen, blocks it and then instantly wakes back. I've checked the logs in /var/log/pm-suspend.log and this fragment seems relevant: /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/000kernel-change suspend suspend: success. Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear suspend suspend: TERM environment variable not set. /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear suspend suspend: Returned exit code 1. Sat Nov 19 12:23:20 CET 2011: Inhibit found, will not perform suspend Sat Nov 19 12:23:20 CET 2011: Running hooks for resume The mentioned script at /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear reads: #!/bin/bash clear When I open a terminal anywhere by hand, $TERM is set to either "linux" or "xterm". However somehow when the 00clear command is executed $TERM is set to "dumb". Two questions: What is the correct value for $TERM when running 00clear script? Where can I set it up? I've looked for solutions on the web, however I could only find information on how to configure $TERM in a regular terminal (and this one is set properly).

• SQL Azure Pricing

  Microsoft’s pricing for SQL Server in the cloud, SQLAzure has been announced: $9.99   per month for 0 – 1GB $99.99 per month up to 10GB. There’s currently a 10GB maximum size cap for SQLAzure. For larger data storage needs, you’ll need to break the databases into smaller sizes. Scaling SQL Azure Applications If you think you’re going to need 100GB in the near term, it probably makes sense to break your application up into multiple separate databases from the get-go (10 x $9.99 = $99.99 anyway) and just make really sure none of the individual databases exceed 10GB. Beep Beep, Back That Database Up The bandwidth costs for SQL Azure are $.15 per GB of outbound bandwidth.  Assuming that you don’t compress the data before you pull it out of the cloud, that means daily backups of a 1GB database will add another $4.50 per month, and a 10GB database will add another $45/month.  Daily backups will cost about half of what your monthly service charges cost. It’s not completely clear from the press release, but if Microsoft follows Amazon’s pricing model, bandwidth between the Microsoft cloud services will not incur a cost.  That would mean it might make sense to spin up an Windows Azure computing application for $.12 per hour, use that application to compress your SQL Azure database, and then send the compressed data off to Azure storage for backup.  That would eliminate the data in/out costs, and minimize the Azure storage costs ($.15/GB).  Database administrators would back up their SQL Azure data to Azure Storage, keep a history of backups there, and restore them to SQL Azure faster when needed. Of course, there’s no native backup support in SQL Azure, and it’s not clear whether Windows Azure will include tools like SQL Server Integration Services. • Advice on selecting programming languages to concentrate on? (2nd year IT security student)

  I'm in the process of considering which programming languages I should devote the majority of my coding studies to. I'm a 2nd year CS student, majoring in IT security. What I want to do/work with: Intelligence gathering Relational databases Virus design Snort network IPS Current coding experience (what I'm going to keep): Java - intermediate HTML5 - intermediate SQL (MySQL, Oracle 11g) - basic BASH - basic I'm going to need to learn (at least) one of the following languages in order to be successful in my field. Languages to add (at least 1): Ruby (+Metasploit) C++ (virus design, low-level driver interaction, computationally intensive applications) Python (import ALL the things) My dilemma: If I diversify too broadly, I won't be able to focus on, and improve in a specific niche. Does anyone have any advice as to how I should select a language? What I'm considering + why I'm leaning towards Ruby because of Metasploit support, despite lower efficiency when compared to Python. Any suggestions based on real-world experience? Should I focus on Ruby, Python, or C++? Both Ruby, and Python have been regarded as syntactically similar to Java which my degree is based around. I'm going to be studying C++ in two years as a component of my malicious code class. Thanks, Tyler

  It was a great experience to attend the MySQL Connect Conference for the first time ever. Personally I was very much enthralled to present about "How to make MySQL Backups" besides attending different sessions to absorb more knowledge about the technical prospects of MySQL. One of the agenda items in my presentation was "MySQL Enterprise Backup" functionality and features. There were total of 40 attendees in the session, who were very much interested about the MySQL Enterprise Backup product and gave positive feedback as well as areas of improvements on our product. Some of our features brought lot of excitement and smile amongst our customers including,1. Performance improvements in MEB 3.8.02. Incremental Base option from MEB 3.7.1 where there is no need to specify the directory name of the previous backup to fetch the lsn values and instead can directly fetch from backup_history table using --incremental-base=history: last_backup3. only-innodb-with-frm option introduced in MEB 3.7 version. A true online hot backup of InnoDB tables.I also attended a session with similar topic "MEB Best Practices" conducted by Sanjay Manwani, where he double clicked all the features and best strategies of backup & restore. I also got an opportunity to attend other sessions including,* Enabling the new generation of web and cloud services with MySQL 5.6 replication* Getting the most out of MySQL with MySQL Workbench* InnoDB compression for OLTP* Scaling for the Web and Cloud with MySQL replication.Above all, had some special moments in the conference including meeting some of the executives / colleagues for the first time f2f. On a whole, the first MySQL Connect conference was a great success in terms of manifesting the features of our products, direct feedback from customer and team building.  We also had some applauding yahoo moments when Tomas Ulin announced different releases including MySQL 5.6 RC, Connector Python 1.0 and ODBC 5.2 release, MySQL Cluster 7.3, additions to MySQL Enterprise edition etc.

• rsync'd a folder, folder doesn't show up, but free disk space decreased

  I am currently trying to switch from mac to windows/ubuntu dual boot (on 2 seperate internal HDDs), but ran into some trouble restoring my documents. I am not sure all the information below is necessary, but if I knew how to solve it, I wouldn't ask it here. I backed up my mac before buying this laptop on an external HDD with Carbon Copy Cloner. I wanted to put these files on my user folder on my windows HDD, but I could not do that from inside windows (HFS+ format of mac), so I used rsync from inside Ubuntu to copy the documents from the ext hdd to the windows partition. It seemed like it went okay, but from inside windows (and later also Ubuntu) the folder didn't show up. • How do I implement the bg, &, and bg commands functionaliity in my custom unix shell program written in C

  I am trying to extend the functionality of my custom unix shell which I earlier wrote as part of my lab assignment. It currently supports all commands through execvp calls, in-built commands like pwd, cd, history, echo and export, and also redirection and pipes. Now I wanted to add the support for running a command in background e.g. $ls -la& Now I also want to implement bg and fg job control commands. I know this can be achieved if I execute the command by forking a new child process and not waiting for it in the parent process. But how do I again bring this command to foreground using fg? I have the idea of entering each background command in a list assigning each of them a serial number. But I don't know how do I make the processes execute in the background, then bring them back to foreground. I guess wait() and waitpid() system calls would come handy but I am not that comfortable with them. I tried reading the man pages but still am in the dark. Can someone please explain in a layman's language how to achieve this in UNIX system programming? And does it have something to do with SIGCONT and SIGSTP signals?

• Creating a bootable CD based on Ubuntu Server

  Note: bootable here refers to an Installation CD, not to the El Torito bootable CD standard if narrowly construed, or to a Live CD if widely construed. What tools exist to create a bootable CD based on Ubuntu 12.04? Unlike the Live CD used for the Desktop edition, the Server edition doesn't use Casper and that's exactly what I want. I.e. this question is not about a live CD! I have read InstallCDCustomization, but that only covers preseeding, adding modules etc. What I would like to achieve is rather to build a bootable CD from scratch, preferably based on the kernel of my running system, the bash and other binaries from that running system. I know how to preseed my own installation CD, so I'm comfortable with the tools involved there. However, that skips important parts such as creating the directory structure that is expected on a bootable CD. And that's what I'm looking for. I guess the question could be summed up as: what tools are the Ubuntu build masters using to author the alternate and server installation CDs and where can I find documentation for these? I would prefer doing this on the terminal (because that's how I run the Ubuntu Server installations themselves). But if I need a second machine with GUI to do it, I can certainly live with that.

• Restoring GRUB2 on Software RAID 0 after Windows 7 wiped it using Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD

  I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my system. However, I need to install Windows 7 back, and I expect that it would alter GRUB and it did. Right now, my partition on my Software RAID 0 looks like this: nvidia_acajefec1 is Ubuntu 10.10 and nvidia_acajefec3 is Windows 7. I've been following some guides around and I am always stuck at GRUB not able to detect the usual RAID content. I've tried running: sudo grub > root (hd0,0) GRUB complains it couldn't find my hard disk. So I tried: find (hd0,0) And it complains that it couldn't find anything. So I tried: find /boot/grub/stage1 It said "file not found". Here's the text from the console: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ grub Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time. [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. So I went to the suggested website, ** (http://grub.enbug.org/Grub2LiveCdInstallGuide) **try to look around, and try: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l Unable to seek on /dev/sda This is just the step 2 of the instruction in the http://grub.enbug.org/Grub2LiveCdInstallGuide and I cannot proceed because it cannot seek /dev/sda. However, ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dmraid -r /dev/sdb: nvidia, "nvidia_acajefec", stripe, ok, 488397166 sectors, data@ 0 /dev/sda: nvidia, "nvidia_acajefec", stripe, ok, 488397166 sectors, data@ 0 So what now? Do you have an idea for how to make fdisk see my RAID array on live cd (Ubuntu 10.10)? Honestly, I am lost, very lost in trying to restore GRUB2 on this software RAID 0 system right now.

• Search Work Items for TFS 2010 - New Extension

  A few months ago I was constantly using Visual Studio 2008 with Team Foundation Server 2008. Searching for work items with queries inside Visual Studio became a pain until I found an add in that simplifed it into one little search box in the IDE.  It allowed me to enter some text in, hit the enter key, and it would bring back a list (aka open a .wiq file) of work items that matched the text entered. I became a huge fan of Noah Coad's Search Work Item Add In. He wrote a pretty good blog on how to use it as well. Of course when we upgraded to Visual Studio 2010 and Team Foundation Server 2010, the 2008 add in no longer worked. I didn't see any updates for it on codeplex to be 2010 compatible. Cory Cissell and I have published a few Visual Studio Extensions already so I figured I'd take a shot at making this tool 2010 compatible by turning it into an extension. Sure enough, it worked. We used it locally for a while and recently decided to publish it to the Visual Studio Gallery. If you are currently looking for an easy way to search work items in Visual Studio 2010, this is worth checking out. Big thanks goes out to Noah for originally creating this on codeplex. Just add another "Or" statement, pick the field name, select an operator, type "[search]" (no quotes) in the value field, and hit ctrl + s to save. • SQL Azure Service Issues &ndash; 10.27.2012 (Restored Now)

  Please note that if you have a Windows Azure website, or use SQL Azure, your site may be experiencing downtime currently.  Notice I just called in regarding one of my public facing internet sites, because the site was failing to load anything but its error page, I couldn’t connect to the database to inspect application error logs, and the Windows Azure Management portal won’t load the SQL Azure extension. After speaking to the representative, he also mentioned that they were also having some problems updating the Service Dashboard which shows service up/down time, and for now, they are posting messages at http://account.windowsazure.com.  Please note that this issue may only be effecting certain regions.  Last, I may have misheard the representative, but he said that the outage was being categorized as a level 8, and if I heard correctly, I think he said that level 8 was the worst level.  I can’t say for sure on this though, because the phone connection to their support number was bad – large amounts of white noise. Good Luck! Update It appears that this outage may also be effecting the following services: SQL Database, Service Bus, Datamarket, Windows Azure Marketplace, Shared Caching, Access Control 2.0, and SQL Reporting. The note on the account page says for the South Central US region, however, I believe the representative I spoke to also mentioned North Central. As I said before though, the connection was bad. Update 2 My site regained connectivity about an hour ago, and it appears that the service dashboard is back in operation with correct status and history. It does appear that I misheard on the phone regarding multiple regions, so chances are this only effected a percentage of the platform. All in all, if this WAS their worst level of a problem, they really got it fixed and back up pretty fast. All in all, I understand that it is inherent for a complex system such as Azure to have ups and downs, but at the end of the day, I am still happy to support Azure to its fullest!

• How to set Guake as preferred terminal emulator for "Run in Terminal"?

  I've recently installed Guake and like it a lot. I'd like to set it as my preferred terminal application. That is, when I right-click on a bash script file, click "Open", and choose "Run in Terminal", I want it to open in a new Guake tab. I'm not sure where to set Guake as the preferred app for "Run in Terminal". And I'm guessing that I might need the command to be something like guake --new-tab=new --execute-command="COMMANDHERE", so how do I pass that parameter? Ideally, I'd like a terminal invocation to open a new Guake tab, unless there is already one available. (Difficult to tell, what id there's already a command running in the existing tab?) Failing that, just opening a new Guake tab is ok. Also, is there an option to keep Guake hidden when this happens? Already tried: Based on How can I set default terminal used? I have already tried: gconftool --type string --set /desktop/gnome/applications/terminal/exec guake - this made Guake appear when I type Ctrl-Alt-T. setting x-terminal-emulator to \usr\bin\guake in Alternatives Configurator - this made no difference (having already made the previous change).
