  A new article now up on otn/java by Deepak Vohra titled “JSF 2.0 for the Cloud, Part One,” shows how JavaServer Faces 2.0 provides features ideally suited for the virtualized computing resources of the cloud. The article focuses on @ManagedBean annotation, implicit navigation, and resource handling. Vohra illustrates how the container-based model found in Java EE 7, which allows portable applications to target single machines as well as large clusters, is well suited to the cloud architecture. From the article-- “Cloud services might not have been a factor when JavaServer Faces 2.0 (JSF 2.0) was developed, but JSF 2.0 provides features ideally suited for the cloud, for example:•    The path-based resource handling in JSF 2.0 makes handling virtualized resources much easier and provides scalability with composite components.•    REST-style GET requests and bookmarkable URLs in JSF 2.0 support the cloud architecture. Representational State Transfer (REST) software architecture is based on transferring the representation of resources identified by URIs.   I'm a long-time software developer, and I've been thrown in the deep, deep end of developing from the ground up what will hopefully be a highly scalable and interactive web application. I've been out of the web game for about 8 years, and even when I was last in it, I wasn't exactly on the cutting edge. Complicating things even further is the preponderance of out-of-date information and the difficulty of knowing what is out of date in the first place. What I'm wondering is, are there any comprehensive books or guides dedicated to compiling and comparing the technologies out there, end-to-end in the web application stack? I'm happy to learn new techs on demand, but I don't like learning about them after I've already spent time going in another direction. I'm looking for the sort of executive info a CTO might read to make sure the best architectural decisions are being made. And just to be clear, this is a question about resources, not about specific technology suggestions.

• Experience the new Bootloader of CE7 VirtualPC BSP - Display Resolution Override

  The CE 7 (aka. Windows Embedded Compact) provides many new features, a new VirtualPC is one of them and as a replacement of Device Emulator in CE 6.   The bootloader of VPC BSP utilize a new introduced framework in CE7, the BLDR (not the BIOSLOADER!) It provides many rich and advanced feature, I will introduce more detail in my future posts. Today, I am going to introduce a basic usage: setting the display resolution. One of the benefit os using the BLDR is it provides interactive user interface, no DOS enviroment required, so user can change the setting on the console. It is especially useful on VPC: if you are not using Win7, edit a file in VHD could take some effort! In the Boot menu, you can select [5] Display Settings. There are a couples of sub menu allow you to change resolution, bpp and etc. As it is very straight forward, I won't go through each option except to the Option [3] "Change Viewable Display Region". The resolution it provides depends on the BIOS (VPC is a PC compatible device), and the minimum resolution it provides is 640x480. But what if user need smaller resolution or any non-standard resolution for whatever reason, it comes the use of "Change Viewable Display Region". User can use it to create a reduced display region. e.g. 240x320 on 640x480 screen. Also you can alter the platform\virtualpc\src\boot\bldr\config.c to add a non-standard resolution (e.g. 480x272) to displayMode array. Another solution in case of you don't want to rebuilt and replace bootloader is to alter SaveVGAArgs in platform\common\src\x86\common\io\ioctl.c to overwrite cxDisplayScreen and cyDisplayScreen setting to whatever resolution you want.

I’m back with the updates, it was an awesome Monday morning, for me it started when Sun came on my face, and the time was 5:30AM~~ I was amazed that this part of the country gets the sunrise quite early, but I ignored the sunlight for a while by covering my face, but…finally the door knocked….~ It was Mukesh, and the time was 6 AM, so I thought let’s get rid of laziness and start my day~ After having my brush and bath, I shaved and we headed for the Breakfast~ We quickly had our bread butter jam combo, and left for the Auditorium for Registration~ We searched for our names and signed the Registration paper and got a cool IIM C bag, with following in it: - a IIMC Notepad - Cello X Caliber pen - a book “What the Best MBAs Know”, and - Reading Material for Campus Sessions Today we had lectures on “Evolution of Indian Corporate Sector” (2 Session of 1.5 hrs each) and “Indian Economy: Crisis & Response” (2 Sessions of 1.5 hrs). “Evolution of Indian Corporate Sector” was by Prof. Raghabendra Chattopadhyay, was one of my best lectures I’ve ever attended in my life, he started with a question that saying that “The Indian Capitalists didn’t wanted the economy to open up till the economic reforms occurred?”, he is one of the best story tellers I’ve ever met, he started with the ancient European and Indian history and linked the trade & economics with it, simply amazing~ I can’t believe I didn’t get bore even after a 2hour long session…awesome~~ Afterward we had our lunch break, we did our lunch in “New Hostel” building and got back for “Indian Economy” sessions. Indian Economy session was taken by Sudip Chaudhuri, for us he’s a well known face as we have already attended his sessions on Macroeconomics~ It was an interactive, easy going, and a laughable session, and we did discussed some serious issues as well. After the class got over we went out and got few T-Shirts and Mugs for ourselves, and yep not to forget it “Rained” in Kolkata today~~ We got back and had our dinner and dispersed finally… I loved this amazing Monday, and hope the spirit continues till Saturday~ I’m feeling the enrichment in my thought and perceptions~ I’m lovin’ it~~ ram :)

  A few weeks back I had talked about the need to watch properties of an object and be able to take action when certain values changed. The need for this arose out of wanting to build generic components that could 'attach' themselves to other objects. One example is a drop shadow - if I add a shadow behavior to an object I want the shadow to be pinned to that object so when that object moves I also want the shadow to move with it, or when the panel is hidden the shadow should hide with it - automatically without having to explicitly hook up monitoring code to the panel. For example, in my shadow plug-in I can now do something like this (where el is the element that has the shadow attached and sh is the shadow): if (!exists) // if shadow was created el.watch("left,top,width,height,display", function() { if (el.is(":visible")) $(this).shadow(opt); // redraw else sh.hide(); }, 100, "_shadowMove"); The code now monitors several properties and if any of them change the provided function is called. So when the target object is moved or hidden or resized the watcher function is called and the shadow can be redrawn or hidden in the case of visibility going away. So if you run any of the following code: $("#box") .shadow() .draggable({ handle: ".blockheader" }); // drag around the box - shadow should follow // hide the box - shadow should disappear with box setTimeout(function() { $("#box").hide(); }, 4000); // show the box - shadow should come back too setTimeout(function() { $("#box").show(); }, 8000); This can be very handy functionality when you're dealing with objects or operations that you need to track generically and there are no native events for them. For example, with a generic shadow object that attaches itself to any another element there's no way that I know of to track whether the object has been moved or hidden either via some UI operation (like dragging) or via code. While some UI operations like jQuery.ui.draggable would allow events to fire when the mouse is moved nothing of the sort exists if you modify locations in code. Even tracking the object in drag mode this is hardly generic behavior - a generic shadow implementation can't know when dragging is hooked up. So the watcher provides an alternative that basically gives an Observer like pattern that notifies you when something you're interested in changes. In the watcher hookup code (in the shadow() plugin) above  a check is made if the object is visible and if it is the shadow is redrawn. Otherwise the shadow is hidden. The first parameter is a list of CSS properties to be monitored followed by the function that is called. The function called receives this as the element that's been changed and receives two parameters: The array of watched objects with their current values, plus an index to the object that caused the change function to fire. How does it work When I wrote it about this last time I started out with a simple timer that would poll for changes at a fixed interval with setInterval(). A few folks commented that there are is a DOM API - DOMAttrmodified in Mozilla and propertychange in IE that allow notification whenever any property changes which is much more efficient and smooth than the setInterval approach I used previously. On browser that support these events (FireFox and IE basically - WebKit has the DOMAttrModified event but it doesn't appear to work) the shadow effect is instant - no 'drag behind' of the shadow. Running on a browser that doesn't support still uses setInterval() and the shadow movement is slightly delayed which looks sloppy. There are a few additional changes to this code - it also supports monitoring multiple CSS properties now so a single object can monitor a host of CSS properties rather than one object per property which is easier to work with. For display purposes position, bounds and visibility will be common properties that are to be watched. If any of the specified properties changes the function specified in the second parameter is fired. func (watchData,index) The function fired in response to a changed property. Receives this as the element changed and object that represents the watched properties and their respective values. The first parameter is passed in this structure:    { id: itId, props: [], func: func, vals: [] }; A second parameter is the index of the changed property so data.props[i] or data.vals[i] gets the property value that has changed. interval The interval for setInterval() for those browsers that don't support property watching in the DOM. In milliseconds. id An optional id that identifies this watcher. Required only if multiple watchers might be hooked up to the same element. This value can be omitted to use the default value of _watcher.
