• Windows 7 backup to 3TB Seagate external drive got 0x8078002A error [migrated]

  I'm using the Windows 7 backup and restore utility to create a system image and personal file backup to an external Seagate GoFlex 3TB disk. I got the following error: One of the backup files could not be created. Details: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. Error code: 0x8078002A I searched all over the internet and found these two related discussions (discussion 1 and discussion 2). Note the 1st discussion is for a Western Digital drive, which seem to have a solution with the WD Quick Formatter tool. But I downloaded that software and it cannot detect my Seagate drive. The 2nd discussion is directly relevant but it does not offer a solution. I've spent days on this and am at a loss... Please help if you know what to do to make it work! Thank you!

• Apache2 Doesn't Serve Subdomain Alias

  I'm trying to prefix an existing Rails application with a sub-domain, essentially I want the sub-domain to serve the same application. Right now apache2 serves my application with "www.example.com" or "example.com". I adjusted my sites-available virtualhost in hopes of allowing for "foo.example.com" or "www.foo.example.com" however both instances are met with a domain not found error. Here is my current VirtualHost in /etc/apache2/sites-available/example.com: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName example.com ServerAlias foo.example.com *.example.com www.foo.example.com www.example.com DocumentRoot /home/user/my_app/public <Directory /home/user/my_app/public> AllowOverride all Options -MultiViews </Directory> </VirtualHost> Any ideas? Note, I realized I probably don't need a wild card sub-domain for what I'm trying to do, I simply added that in as a last-ditch effort. • 1 TB hdd and no space to create a partition for linux !

  I have a brand new Acer aspire 5811 with core i5 processor and all that. There is windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed on it. I want to install arch and setup a dual boot system. The problem is: Windows shows 4 partitions 14 MB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB NTFS Data partition for windows 7 But GpartedLive cd and also arch setup show 5 partitions 938Kb UNKOWN system reserved partition 14 MB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB unusable space Because of this, I cannot create another primary partition. Can any body guide me about how should I go for creating partition for installing arch ? Note: I need to keep windows 7 working. regards.

• Forward a port with modem (with built-in but disabled router) + a separate router

  I have a Motorola SBG6580 that is a modem and a wireless router in one. However, the wireless router part was bad so I disabled it and got a separate wireless router. I can go into the configuration pages of both the modem and the router now, and I'm confused as to which device needs to be configured for port-forwarding. I have a raspberry pi that I want to set up as a webserver. Do I configure the router, the modem, or both? Right now, the SBG6580's 1st LAN is connected to the wireless router's WAN, and the internet is working well. Note that the SBG6580 only has 4 ports, and I'm assuming they're LAN,as they are not labeled.

• Is it a "pattern smell" to put getters like "FullName" or "FormattedPhoneNumber" in your model?

  I'm working on an ASP.NET MVC app, and I've been getting into the habit of putting what seem like helpful and convenient getters into my model/entity classes. For example: public class Member { public int Id { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } public string PhoneNumber { get; set; } public string FullName { get { return FirstName + " " + LastName; } } public string FormattedPhoneNumber { get { return "(" + PhoneNumber.Substring(0, 3) + ") " + PhoneNumber.Substring(3, 3) + "-" + PhoneNumber.Substring(6); } } } I'm wondering people think about the FullName and FormattedPhoneNumber getters. They make it very easy to create standardized data formats throughout the app, and they seem to save a lot of repeated code, but it could definitely be argued that data format is something that should be handled in mapping from model to view-model. In fact, I was originally applying these data formats in my service layer where I do my mapping, but it was becoming a burden to constantly have to write formatters then apply them in many different places. E.g., I use "Full Name" in most views, and having to type something like model.FullName = MappingUtilities.GetFullName(entity.FirstName, entity.LastName); all over the place seemed a lot less elegant than just typing model.FullName = entity.FullName (or, if you use something like AutoMapper, potentially not typing anything at all). So, where do you draw the line when it comes to data formatting. Is it "okay" to do data formatting in your model or is that a "pattern smell"? Note: I definitely do not have any html in my model. I use html helpers for that. I'm strictly talking about formatting or combining data (and especially data that is frequently used).

  I am trying to make a simple Ubuntu Touch web application with Qt Creator. I have set up a new project according to the tutorial and committed the files to Bazaar. I have set a url instead of the default index.htm in the qml file of the project. • Can I repair a short circuiting problem in a Dell Inspiron 6000 that occurs when it is picked up?

  I have a couple of Dell Inspiron 6000 notebooks that work perfectly fine unless you pick them up by one corner (as most people would). When you lift the notebook it flexes slightly and the notebook shorts out. Sometimes even a gentle bump will cause this to happen. So far the notebook always starts back up without issue, but this behavior is...inconvenient. It occurred to me that someone familiar with the innards might be able to suggest a little MacGyver fix for this. A little electrical tape in the right spot or something like that. Or perhaps this is a common problem and the answer is here, waiting for me to stumble on the correct keywords. I would appreciate any suggestions Note: It is probably worth mentioning that I have disassembled a Dell notebook before to replace a bluetooth card so I comfortable opening up the systems.

  I have Visual Studio 2008 Team System installed on my work machine. I use it to work for an offisite clients Team Foundation Server 2008. Yesterday it stopped working. E.G. I couldn't connect to TFS. On my machine I have updates disabled, I have the firewall disabled and have a proper working connection to my clients server. The client didn't change anything on its machine. What are the possible reasons the visual studio couldn't find the TFS server. Note: Other members of my team can connect without problems, and I've checked we have the same configurations).

• I want to turn VB.Net Option Strict On

  I recently found out about strong typing in VB.Net (naturally it was on here, thanks!) and am deciding I should take another step toward being a better programmer. I went from vba macros - VB.Net, because I needed a program that I could automate and I never read anything about strong typing, so I kind of fell into the VB.Net default trap. Now I am looking to turn it on and sort out this whole type thing. I was hoping someone could direct me towards some resources to make this transistion as painless as possible. I have read around some and ctype seems to come up a lot, but past that I am at a bit of a loss. What are the benefits of switching? Is there more to it than just using ctype to cast things? I feel like there is a good article that I have failed to come across and any direction would be great. Would a good approach to be to rewrite a program that is written with option strict off and note differences?

• Wikimedia Commons not working properly from IE 8

  It happens fairly often that a page on Wikimedia Commons doesn't load in IE. This happens to me on both machines I use, each one Windows 7 with IE 8. The page just loads endlessly (or connects—can't really tell) and timeouts after a while. Repeated attempts (trying to load the same page in 5 to 10 tabs) sometimes work, but sometimes it takes a lot more tries. As far as I can tell, no other program is affected—Firefox or PowerShell have no trouble loading the page. Also, when I use Fiddler it seems to load fine on the first try as well. Anyone has an idea what might be going on? I didn't change any settings that I am aware of (and most likely didn't do so in the same way on both machines). Preemptive note: I don't need advice in the form of »Use another browser instead.«.

  Using a VM I installed Windows 2008 Server x64 and as the image below shows, added the IIS Role full image and assigned all role features of IIS full image But if I have an ASP.NET (aspx) page that does (C#) Session["test-session"] = "A"; and read in other page I always get nothing! NOTE: I do have an entire ASP.NET web application, the example above is to be succinct and explicit on what is the problem I'm facing. Can anyone know what do I have to do to the Server, so I can use the Session variables? All help is greatly appreciated, Thank you

• Collaboration using github and testing the code

  The procedure in my team is that we all commit our code to the same development branch. We have a test server that runs updated code from this branch so that we can test our code on the servers. The problem is that if we want to merge the development branch to the master branch in order to publish new features to our production servers, some features that may not have been ready will be applied to the production servers. So we're considering having each developer work on a feature/topic branch where each of them work on their own features and when it's ready, merge it into the development branch for testing, and then into the master branch. However, because our test server only pulls changes from the development branch, the developers are unable to test their features. While this is not a huge issue as they can test it on their local machine, the only problem I foresee is if we want to test callbacks from third-party services like sendgrid (where you specify a url for sendgrid to update you on the status of emails sent out). How to handle this problem? Note: We're not advanced git users. We use the Github app for MacOSX and Windows to commit our work.

• Skipping hardlinks when using TSM Backup

  We need to backup a filesystem with lots of hardlinks. Since there are several hardlinks for each "true" file, we would like to skip all the hardlinks when backing up the filesystem to avoid n exact copies of each file. The backup is done using Tivoli Storage Manager Backup, and we've been unable to get it to treat hardlinks as anything other than separate files to be backed up alongside each other. In case it's relevant for possible solutions, I'd like to note that it's possible to tell a hardlink from a proper file by the filename: foobarbaz-123.ext # file foobarbaz-123-1.ext # hardlink foobarbaz-123-2.ext # hardlink barbazfoo-456.ext # file barbazfoo-456-1.ext # hardlink barbazfoo-456-2.ext # hardlink barbazfoo-456-3.ext # hardlink That is, all hardlinks have two hyphens in the filename, where as proper files have just the one. The server is running Ubuntu Linux, and the files are situated on a gfs volume on our SAN.

• Alert for Forms customers running Oracle Forms 10g

  Doesn’t time fly!  While you might have been happily running your Forms 10g applications for about 5 years or so now, the end of premier support is creeping up and you need to start planning for a move to Oracle Forms 11g. The premier support end date in December 31st 2011 and this is documented in Note: 1290974.1 available from MOS. So how much of an impact is this going to be?  Maybe not as much as you think.  While Forms 11g is based on WebLogic Server (WLS),10g was based  on OC4J.  That in itself doesn’t impact Forms much.  In most case it will simply be a recompile of your Forms source files and redeploy on WLS 11g. The Forms builder is the same in 11g as in 10g although its currently not available as a separate download from the main middleware bundle.  You can also look at a WLS Basic license option which means you shouldn’t have to shell out on upgrading to a WLS Suite license option. So what’s the proof in this being a relatively straightforward upgrade?  Well, we’ve had a big uptake of Forms 11g already (which has itself been out for over 2 years).  Read about BT Expedite’s upgrade where “The upgrade of Forms from Oracle Forms 10g to Oracle Forms 11g was relatively simple and on the whole, was just a recompilation”.  Or AMEC where “This has been one of the easiest Forms conversions we’ve ever done and it was a simple recompile in all cases” So if you are on 10g (or even earlier versions) I’d strongly consider starting your planning for an upgrade to 11g now. • Consistency of an object

  I tend to keep my objects consistent during their lifetime. In some cases, setting up an object requires multiple calls to different routines. For example, a connection object may operate in this way: Connection c = new Connection(); c.setHost("http://whatever") c.setPort(8080) c.connect() please note this is just a stupid example to let you understand the point. In between calls to setHost and setPort the object is inconsistent, because the Port has not been specified yet, so this code would crash Connection c = new Connection(); c.setHost("http://whatever") c.connect() Meaning that it's a requisite for connect() to have previous calls to both setHost and setPort, otherwise it won't be able to operate as its state is inconsistent. You may fix the issue with a default value, but there may be cases where no sensible default may be devised. We assume in the later example that there's no default for the port, and therefore a call to c.connect() without first calling both setHost and setPort will be an inconsistent state of the object. This, to me, points at an incorrect interface design, but I may be wrong, so I want to hear your opinion. Do you organize your interface so that the object is always in a consistent (i.e. workable) state both before and after the call ? Edit: Please don't try to solve the problem I gave above. I know how to solve that. My question is much broader in sense. I am looking for a design principle, officially or informally stated, regarding consistency of object state between calls.

• Change Groupwise 7 User Password from NetWare Server Console

  I have a Groupwise 7 server in place that we use for testing purposes. The previous administrator didn't bother to make a note of any of the account passwords on the machine. I have access to the Server Console...but I can't login via ConsoleOne or anything like that. Is there a command line utility that I can run from the Server Console to reset a Groupwise user password? I just need to have one account up and running for testing. If there's a CLI utility I can use to be able to create a new account, that would work just as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated...I'm kinda stuck at this point.

  A new MVC 2 project worked on my local machine but when it was deployed to the test server it gave the error 'Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies.' I have the full Visual Studio 2010 installed on my local machine but just the .NET 4 framework installed on the test servers. It seems the MVC assemblies do not come with .NET 4 framework itself so how to make MVC 2 work on the test servers? When I installed Visual Studio 2010 on my local machine it came with all the fruit included (.NET4 framework, MVC2 etc) so the System.Web.Mvc.dll can be found in my machine's GAC (C:\Windows\assembly). However, since there is no need to bloat the web servers only the plain old .NET4 framework has been installed on the test servers. This does NOT include the MVC assembly and that is why it cannot be found by the web application. You need this assembly to be on your web servers that you are deploying to but you want to avoid having to copy them into the GAC manually and doing all that gacutil mess or maybe you don't have access to your servers if they are hosted by provider. Solution You need to make the System.Web.Mvc assembly bin deployable... okay that doesn't sound easy but here is how to do it for the necessary MVC references: Simply right click the reference and select 'Properties' Then change 'Copy Local' to 'True': Note If your server has .NET 3.5 sp1 installed the new(ish) assemblies System.Web.Routing and System.Web.Abstractions will already be in the GAC. If you had previously deployed an MVC 1 application to a .NET 3.5 server you may remember having to deploy the other two assemblies too. Since MVC2 requires at least .NET 3.5 sp1 you will not need to worry about these assemblies, just System.Web.Mvc

  I googled and looked into all unkown issues on ubuntu forums but I can't figure out why a 10.04 LTS server won't detect the last LTS 12.04.1. I guess since 12.04 is a fresh dist, not much is reported for related issues Here is what I did : apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get install update-manager-core it was already installed so no update for this package.   I had an email account [email protected] hosted on Host A. This mailbox had 100 messages. I wanted to migrate to Host B, so I download all the 100 messages from Host A on my iPhone. Now that my site was successfully migrated to Host B and the email account [email protected] was created again (the mailbox is empty), how can I send the messages that I have downloaded on my iPhone to the mailbox on Host B? Note that the migration from Host A to Host B did not change the IMAP and SMTP adressess and parameters. I'm still using the same addresses, parameters and ports as before. The email accounts just switched hosting.
