I'm using Debian GNU/Linux + awesome. Inside it I use virtualbox with ms windows.
Most time I spend in Linux, however I constantly need to monitor if something new happens in the guest system.
Is there any way to make virtualbox alerting about any changes on guest screen (clock is disabled, therefore only new mail or instant message may change the screen)?
PS. Unfortunately I can't to move mail and instant messages from windows due to specific clients for only internal network.
When I run the sendmail -bs command as root, I get the expected output:
$ sudo sendmail -bs
220 mydomain.com ESMTP Postfix
ehlo localhost
250-mydomain.com
250-PIPELINING
250-SIZE 15728640
250-ETRN
250-ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES
250-8BITMIME
250 DSN
But when I run the same command without sudo, I get no output at all and sendmail doesn't respond to any commands:
$ sendmail -bs
ehlo localhost
quit
wtf
^C
$
How can I configure Postfix so that sendmail works for every user (or at least for some specific users)? I need this because SwiftMailer for PHP uses sendmail -bs for sending mails and fails when it can't find any output.
I find I frequently use the combination of Suspend (^Z) then send to background (bg) in bash. Ideally I would like an alternate keyboard shortcut that negates the need to follow ^Z with the bg command, and just send the active process straight to background. Does this exist?
Edit: I should have been more specific, but appending & to the command is not sufficient, as they often require interaction (stdin) between launch and backgrounding. So:
launch
interact
background
What is the real meaning of the "Select a language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use" dialog under Control Panel-Regional Settings-Advanced in WinXP and Win2003?
According to the dialog text, Windows will use this to display the resource strings such as menus. The treatment of text files is application-specific, so this setting will not affect that.
But can I expect any other change in behavior from this setting? Any insights into what is really going wrong?
I am using nginx to issue redirects for a domain we are changing, but one of our old mobile apps becomes broken by this redirect when it issues one specific POST request to the old domain.
Here is the current nginx configuration, how could I add a reverse proxy to perform a POST to the URL /post_url and redirect everything else the same as now?
server {
listen 80;
server_name olddomain.com www.olddomain.com;
rewrite ^(.*) http://www.newdomain.com$1 permanent;
}
We used this PHP code to disable gzip compression for specific scripts
@apache_setenv('no-gzip', 1);
But our admin migrated to FastCGI and this does not work anymore. How to do it?
Thanks
Preface: I like Vim... a lot
Requirements:
Remote editing capabilities
S/FTP or SSH
Text coloring
As you can see my requirements are specific but slim. I have been using TextWrangler on MacOSX and I love it. It's that remote editing feature that really does it for me.
This post is community-wiki, and if another topic that has an answer that meats my requirements exists, please kindly redirect me.
Thank you all very much!
Even though the log file shows that there is over 1 GB of free space, we start receiving an error message every 3 or 4 days saying that the TempDB file is full. I know cursors impact the TempDB file, but is there anything else I should be looking at to see why this keeps happening? I've tried running SQL Profiler, but when running it, it slowed down the DB so much that the users were experiencing timeouts. What specific items should I check for in SQL Profiler?
I am attempting to use some third party software to send an MMS Message through an attached Sprint mobile phone. The problem is, I cannot find Sprint's specific configuration anywhere. Example configuration for many providers can be found here.
Specifically, I need:
APN (Access Point Name)
WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) Gateway
Provider MMSC (MMS Store and Forward Server)
Potentially a Login/Password if Used
Note: I already have a request into ActiveXperts, no response yet.
Recently noticed that my icons settings in notification area are getting reset on system restart.
For example I specify Skype icon to always show icon and notification.
After I restart Windows - it's hidden again.
It's not just for one specific icon, it's for all of them.
Checking box "Always shows icons and notifications" works, and all icons appear, but this is not an option.
Please help.
Thanks.

We are going to be setting up two replicas of our DataMart and related databases, and our plan includes using Hyper-V VM's to handle the load. When creating the VM's, we cannot find specific requirements or recommendations for RAM/CPU power for read-only replicas.
Our current Primary DataMart setup has 64GB RAM and Two Quad-Core procs, which so far has been adequate for our usage.
What should be the server setup for replicas and SQL Server to adequately support the read-only usage?
How many different applications do you use with a 2, 3, 4, 5 or more monitor setup? What's the most sophisticated multi-monitor setup you've seen?
To be more specific, I would like to know exactly how you use your multi-monitor setup and how can I make better use of my own.
How does someone take full advantage of a multi-monitor setup? And does having more monitors help your productivity?
I am looking for free software to do batch conversions of divx video files to iPhone format.
I have read the thread:
http://superuser.com/questions/5784/looking-to-convert-video-to-iphone-format
Handbrake works good for single files but it has very little customization with regards to files names and the batch functionality is not very good (or at least I can't get it to work very easily).
Can anyone recommend a good batch converter? A script for Handbrake to do a batch for all in a specific directory would be useful even.
I am running the top command to see details about specific processes. The output is piped to grep like so:
top -n 1 | grep jre
The output is usually around 4 lines, and I would like to prefix the current time to each line so it would be something like:
Before:
2772 deleteme 20 0 2832 1156 872 R 2.0 0.1 0:00.01 top
After:
13:46 25-08-2012 2772 deleteme 20 0 2832 1156 872 R 2.0 0.1 0:00.01 top
Microsoft has provided a 3 license "Family Pack" for Windows 7. The description specifies that it is for 3 computers in one household. How specific is this restriction. Is Microsoft actually checking this, or should we all be running out, purchasing the 3 packs, and reselling the licenses for $80 each?
I'm working on a project with a friend soon. Given that he cares about these things more than me, I let him choose the indentation. Him being a Ruby fan, he chose two spaces.
My usual is to use tabs. Is there anyway I can set vim to, only in this specific folder, have it as two spaces when I press the tab button?
How can I list all files (including system and hidden) on all hard drives (not removable drives)?
I think in something like a:
dir -a -h *.* /s > file.txt
but this is for the specific drive where I'm.
How can I do something like that but with C:, D:, etc,
but I don't know the DOS's name of the drivers, and i need a .bat to do this (an automatic listing). Implementer can't also know the names of drivers.
We have an ubuntu box set up to do some monitoring but due to the placement are unable to run CAT5 to the box itself. I have an Atheros PCI card that works great as long as someone is logged into Gnome and it doesn't disconnect from the AP during that time.
Is there a way to have Ubuntu connect to the AP during boot, and always reconnect if it finds a signal from a specified AP? The box would have a static IP and only connecting to a specific AP using WEP.
I've written this little batch script to help me auto-clean the registries of 300+ identical PC's of some very specific registry keys. It works right up to the point of passing the key variable to the "reg delete %1" command.
@echo off
C:
cd C:\Program Files\McAfee\Common Framework\
framepkg.exe remove=agent /silent
setlocal
for /F %%c in ('REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE /s^|FIND "HKEY_"^|findstr /L /I /C:"mcafee"') do call :delete %%c
endlocal
goto :EOF
:delete
reg delete /f %1
pause
Any and all debugging help would be extremely appreciated!
I am having a problem with a new installation of MATLAB (2012b) that is cannot find the base enumberation type Simulink.IntEnumType. The specific error text is:
specified superclass 'Simulink.IntEnumType' contains a parse error or cannot be found on MATLAB's search path, possibly shadowed by another file with the same name
I am quite sure there is no shadowing, so I suspect there is a problem with the installation. Any ideas what could have gone wrong?
