DEB: "Provides:" field ignored

I need to replace a package with a custom one, which gets its own name (foo-origpackage). To allow it to be used as drop-in replacement, I added the Provides: origpackage line to the control file. apt-cache show foo-origpackage lists the "Provides" entry just fine. However, when I want to install a file depending on origpackage, it fails ("Package origpackage not installed"). Is there some distinction between "real" and virtual packages I'm missing? EDIT: To be precise, what I want to replace is xen-utils-common for Squeeze. Wget save cookies not working

I've been trying to login in the pyload through the web api, but wget is not saving the cookies and I don't understand why. su not giving proper message for restricted LDAP groups

I have configured PAM authentication on Linux box to restrict particular group only to login. I have enabled pam and ldap through authconfig and modified access.conf like below, [root@test root]# tail -1 /etc/security/access.conf - : ALL EXCEPT root test-auth : ALL Also modified sudoers file, to get su for this group <code> [root@test ~]# tail -1 /etc/sudoers %test-auth ALL=/bin/su</code> Now, only this ldap group members can login to system. However when from any of this authorized user, I tried for su, it asks for password and then though I enter correct password it gives message like Incorrect password and login failed. /var/log/secure shows that user is not having permission to get the access, but then it should print message like Access denied.The way it prints for console login. My functionality is working but its no giving proper messages. Could anyone please help on this. IPtables: DNAT not working

In a CentOS server I have, I want to forward port 8080 to a third-party webserver. So I added this rule: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 8080 -j DNAT --to-destination thirdparty_server_ip:80 But it doesn't seem to work. In an effort to debug the process, I added these two LOG rules: iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -p tcp --src my_laptop_ip --dport ! 22 -j LOG --log-level warning --log-prefix "[_REQUEST_COMING_FROM_CLIENT_] " iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -p tcp --dst thirdparty_server_ip -j LOG --log-level warning --log-prefix "[_REQUEST_BEING_FORWARDED_] " (the --dport ! 22 part is there just to filter out the SSH traffic so that my log file doesn't get flooded) According to this page the mangle/PREROUTING chain is the first one to process incomming packets and the nat/POSTROUTING chain is the last one to process outgoing packets. And since the nat/PREROUTING chain comes in the middle of the other two, the three rules should do this: the rule in mangle/PREROUTING logs the incomming packets the rule in nat/PREROUTING modifies the packets (it changes the dest IP and port) the rule in nat/POSTROUTING logs the modified packets about to be forwarded Although the first rule does log incomming packets comming from my laptop, the third rule doesn't log the packets which are supposed to be modified by the second rule. It does log, however, packets that are produced in the server, hence I know the two LOG rules are working properly. Why are the packets not being forwarded, or at least why are they not being logged by the third rule? PS: there are no more rules than those three. All other chains in all tables are empty and with policy ACCEPT.

Synchronising a remote folder with a local one.

I am using a network disk (that's connected to my router by USB) to store several data files. A simple .NET application that I've created is supposed to read and modify these data files. However, some security issues are preventing this application to access these files directly. (Actually, these have been built-in to my application on purpose since it's not going to support NAS disks.) Since this disk is shared with several computers, I just want to have a simple synchronisation method, which will copy the files to a local folder where3 my application can access them. And, once modified, it should send back the modified files to the NAS disk again. I have two options: 1) Build a second application to do my own synchronisation. 2) Find some build-in function inside Windows 7 Ultimate which can do this for me. Option 2 is preferred. Option 1 is something I can do easily, if need be. I don't need third-party tools. (Still, feel free to add some references to good tools, although I won't accept them as answers.) Basically, is this possible with Windows 7 and if so, how?

Prevent Amazon EC2 Time zone from reverting back on yum update

I use an Amazon EC2 server instance that runs a distro called Amazon Linux AMI. (I've read that it is based on CentOS/Red Hat). My specific version is the 2012.09 release. Anyway, I was able to change the time zone about a week ago from the default UTC to America/New_York (which is EST/EDT). The command I used to change it was: ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/New_York /etc/localtime ...thanks to this other Server Fault question. At that point, I was able to run date from the the command line, and it correctly displayed the EDT time. And even after EDT "fell back" to EST this past Sunday, I was pleased to find that running date still produced the correct local time. So that was great. However, after running a yum update yesterday, it seems that my time zone got reverted back to plain 'ol UTC. I even checked the last modified time of /etc/localtime file, and indeed it confirmed that it had been modified around the same time I had updated. Is there any way to prevent this from happening again, or will I be stuck resetting the time zone every time I do a yum update?

How can I store logs and meet compliance requirements for free?

I am trying to keep long-term logs of an app in such a way, that it could plausibly demonstrated to third parties/court that the application has processed certain data at a given time. The data can be represented in XML or text format. A simple gzipped log is not plausible, as I may have added or modified data afterwards, whereas an external logging service would be an overkill. Cost is an issue, we are not dealing with financial data or so, but rather some simple user generated content, where some malicious users tried to blame the operator in the past when things escalated and went to court. My question: Is there some kind of signing software for Linux that signs each element of a log in such a way, that it can be easily shown that no element can be added or modified afterwards? Plug-Ins into some free Splunk Alternatives would be fine too. Ideally the software I am looking for should be under a GPL or similar license. I could probably achive something like this by using PGP/GPG sgning functions and including the previous elements signituares within the following element, but I would prefer to use some program where you do not have to argue about the validity of your own code. Note to mods: I am not asking this question on Stackoverflow, because I am not looking for writing own code for reasons described above. I think this question rather fits into serverfault than superuser, as server-side logging software is discussed rather here than on superuser.

Setup ejabberd with SQL Server 2008

Here's what I have got so far. Windows 2008 Server 64 bit. Installed the latest version of ejabberd, ejabberd-2.1.8-windows-installer.exe. The windows service starts up fine but seems ineffective. However, using the start & stop scripts work. I am able to login to the admin page which so far doesn't seem that versatile. Opened up ports 5222, 5226 and 5280 for my workstation to talk to the server. I've got Spark and Jabbear Windows clients to register, login and instant message with multiple accounts using the server. After confirming that I've got the very basics working, I've decided to make use of SQL Server 2008 as the database. Reason? Mainly, I am very comfortable with SQL Server. I can deal with redundancy, failover, data analysis easily. Not sure if ejabberd's built in DB provides all that. Following the instructions from ejabberd's documentation, I setup a system DSN that points to another physical database. The DSN checks out fine. (Tried both Named Pipes and TCP/IP) Modified ejabberd.cfg. Commented line %%{auth_method, internal} and uncommented line {auth_method, odbc} Uncommented and modified {odbc_server, "DSN=ejabberd;UID=somelogin;PWD=somepassword"}. After making these changes, I restarted. No errors are found in the log files. The jabber clients are no longer able to register new accounts. I'm not sure where to look for errors besides the /logs/ folder as I'm new to all this. I am basically stuck here on step 5. Has anyone got this setup to work recently? Some of the posts I've found around are years old and of no help. I can't be the only one setting up ejabberd with MS SQL. Any help would be appreciated!

How to perform this Windows 7 permissions change on many files via GUI or command line

After using my external hard drive on another Windows 7 computer to tweak photos with Windows Live Photo Gallery then upload them to Facebook I found the modified images were now not visible on the original Windows 7 computer. I'm not sure if the things I tried to get it working subsequently changed anything, but I do know this is the sequence of actions that makes the permissions of the modified files match those of the unmodified files: Right click on broken image file, select "Properties" On the "Security" tab press the "Advanced" button In the "Permissions" tab press the "Continue" button with the shield icon on it Tick the box marked "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent Click the "Remove" button to remove the only current entry "Type: Allow, Name: Administrators (XYZ\Administrators), Permission: Full control, Inherited From: OK on the "Permissions" tab. OK on the "Security" tab. Now this same procedure does not work at the folder level. It results in "access denied" dialogs. I'm looking for some way to perform this exact modification on all the images I edited on the other computer. I'm happy to use the Windows GUI in Explorer or any other included tools. I'm happy to use the Windows command line. I'd prefer not to use a third-party tool since I'd have to be satisfied it's not doing anything else. I'm not looking for a different way to change permissions to other settings to make an external drive full of photos editable on multiple computers. At least not in this question.

Win 7 64 with 8 gig of ram, getting running low on memory errors.

I have a new Dell laptop running Win7 64 with 8 meg of ram. If I leave the system running overnight I start getting low memory errors the next day. Looking at task manager it shows 6.27 gig used but looking at the processes list the totals don't show nearly that much. I am showing all processes from all users. I have also looked at the processes with PRocess Explorer and see the same results. Using resource monitor I see 4165 MB in Use, 2328 MB Modified and 1352MB Standby with only about 345 MB free. These numbers don't seem to add up to what I have running. I have Visual Studio 2010 running along with a number of IE8 sessions. I have run the same set of apps with XP SP2 32 bit with 4 gig of memory and never had this sort of problem. What is Modified memory? What is Standby memory? Any suggestions on what might be the issue and what might be a fix? TIA J

Is it possible to automate a driver change on Windows for a plug&play peripheral ?

Is it possible to automate a change of driver for a same peripheral, under Windows ? Typically to switch between two ones. (I'm talking about the kind of driver which doesn't require the computer to reboot, typically). I have a peripheral for which I use the constructor's driver in some cases, but also a modified driver in other cases. Not that the changing driver is really annoying, but I would like to know if it would be possible to make it easier, like for example in a shortcut. I know the name of the driver, even which files involved. For more details, the concerned peripheral is a "Xbox360 Gamepad for Windows" (or something like this). The base driver is good for new games, but it doesn't handle correctly older ones (some issues with axes, and vibrations). The modified driver makes it behave like a classic controller, but then it doesn't work correctly on new games (typically using the new version of dxinput linked to the "Games for Windows"). However, this is not a question specific to this gamepad, I'm asking in general about automating this change of drivers. I currently use Windows XP, so my question is mostly about it, but I'm also interested in the same issue for later versions (Windows 7, most likely). I'm not really sure if this is even possible, but in case someone has an idea, I'm asking.

Problem compiling hive with ant

I compiling with Solaris 10 SPARC, jdk 1.6 from Sun, Ant 1.7.1 from OpenCSW. I have no problem running hadoop 0.17.2.1 However, I have problem compiling/integrating hive with the error 'cannot find symbol', although I followed the tutorial. I have the hive source code from SVN exactly from tutorial. How can I know the hive version I compiling and how can I compile against hadoop 0.17.2.1? Please advice. DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. C#/.NET Little Wonders: The Joy of Anonymous Types

Once again, in this series of posts I look at the parts of the .NET Framework that may seem trivial, but can help improve your code by making it easier to write and maintain. In the .NET 3 Framework, Microsoft introduced the concept of anonymous types, which provide a way to create a quick, compiler-generated types at the point of instantiation. These may seem trivial, but are very handy for concisely creating lightweight, strongly-typed objects containing only read-only properties that can be used within a given scope. Creating an Anonymous Type In short, an anonymous type is a reference type that derives directly from object and is defined by its set of properties base on their names, number, types, and order given at initialization. In addition to just holding these properties, it is also given appropriate overridden implementations for Equals() and GetHashCode() that take into account all of the properties to correctly perform property comparisons and hashing. Also overridden is an implementation of ToString() which makes it easy to display the contents of an anonymous type instance in a fairly concise manner. To construct an anonymous type instance, you use basically the same initialization syntax as with a regular type. So, for example, if we wanted to create an anonymous type to represent a particular point, we could do this: 1: var point = new { X = 13, Y = 7 }; Note the similarity between anonymous type initialization and regular initialization. The main difference is that the compiler generates the type name and the properties (as readonly) based on the names and order provided, and inferring their types from the expressions they are assigned to. It is key to remember that all of those factors (number, names, types, order of properties) determine the anonymous type. This is important, because while these two instances share the same anonymous type: 1: // same names, types, and order 2: var point1 = new { X = 13, Y = 7 }; 3: var point2 = new { X = 5, Y = 0 }; These similar ones do not: 1: var point3 = new { Y = 3, X = 5 }; // different order 2: var point4 = new { X = 3, Y = 5.0 }; // different type for Y 3: var point5 = new {MyX = 3, MyY = 5 }; // different names 4: var point6 = new { X = 1, Y = 2, Z = 3 }; // different count Limitations on Property Initialization Expressions The expression for a property in an anonymous type initialization cannot be null (though it can evaluate to null) or an anonymous function. For example, the following are illegal: 1: // Null can't be used directly. Null reference of what type? 2: var cantUseNull = new { Value = null }; 3: 4: // Anonymous methods cannot be used. 5: var cantUseAnonymousFxn = new { Value = () => Console.WriteLine(“Can’t.”) }; Note that the restriction on null is just that you can’t use it directly as the expression, because otherwise how would it be able to determine the type? You can, however, use it indirectly assigning a null expression such as a typed variable with the value null, or by casting null to a specific type: 1: string str = null; 2: var fineIndirectly = new { Value = str }; 3: var fineCast = new { Value = (string)null }; All of the examples above name the properties explicitly, but you can also implicitly name properties if they are being set from a property, field, or variable. In these cases, when a field, property, or variable is used alone, and you don’t specify a property name assigned to it, the new property will have the same name. For example: 1: int variable = 42; 2: 3: // creates two properties named varriable and Now 4: var implicitProperties = new { variable, DateTime.Now }; Is the same type as: 1: var explicitProperties = new { variable = variable, Now = DateTime.Now }; But this only works if you are using an existing field, variable, or property directly as the expression. If you use a more complex expression then the name cannot be inferred: 1: // can't infer the name variable from variable * 2, must name explicitly 2: var wontWork = new { variable * 2, DateTime.Now }; In the example above, since we typed variable * 2, it is no longer just a variable and thus we would have to assign the property a name explicitly. ToString() on Anonymous Types One of the more trivial overrides that an anonymous type provides you is a ToString() method that prints the value of the anonymous type instance in much the same format as it was initialized (except actual values instead of expressions as appropriate of course). For example, if you had: 1: var point = new { X = 13, Y = 42 }; And then print it out: 1: Console.WriteLine(point.ToString()); You will get: 1: { X = 13, Y = 42 } While this isn’t necessarily the most stunning feature of anonymous types, it can be handy for debugging or logging values in a fairly easy to read format. Comparing Anonymous Type Instances Because anonymous types automatically create appropriate overrides of Equals() and GetHashCode() based on the underlying properties, we can reliably compare two instances or get hash codes. For example, if we had the following 3 points: 1: var point1 = new { X = 1, Y = 2 }; 2: var point2 = new { X = 1, Y = 2 }; 3: var point3 = new { Y = 2, X = 1 }; If we compare point1 and point2 we’ll see that Equals() returns true because they overridden version of Equals() sees that the types are the same (same number, names, types, and order of properties) and that the values are the same. In addition, because all equal objects should have the same hash code, we’ll see that the hash codes evaluate to the same as well: 1: // true, same type, same values 2: Console.WriteLine(point1.Equals(point2)); 3: 4: // true, equal anonymous type instances always have same hash code 5: Console.WriteLine(point1.GetHashCode() == point2.GetHashCode()); However, if we compare point2 and point3 we get false. Even though the names, types, and values of the properties are the same, the order is not, thus they are two different types and cannot be compared (and thus return false). And, since they are not equal objects (even though they have the same value) there is a good chance their hash codes are different as well (though not guaranteed): 1: // false, different types 2: Console.WriteLine(point2.Equals(point3)); 3: 4: // quite possibly false (was false on my machine) 5: Console.WriteLine(point2.GetHashCode() == point3.GetHashCode()); Using Anonymous Types Now that we’ve created instances of anonymous types, let’s actually use them. The property names (whether implicit or explicit) are used to access the individual properties of the anonymous type. The main thing, once again, to keep in mind is that the properties are readonly, so you cannot assign the properties a new value (note: this does not mean that instances referred to by a property are immutable – for more information check out C#/.NET Fundamentals: Returning Data Immutably in a Mutable World). Thus, if we have the following anonymous type instance: 1: var point = new { X = 13, Y = 42 }; We can get the properties as you’d expect: 1: Console.WriteLine(“The point is: ({0},{1})”, point.X, point.Y); But we cannot alter the property values: 1: // compiler error, properties are readonly 2: point.X = 99; Further, since the anonymous type name is only known by the compiler, there is no easy way to pass anonymous type instances outside of a given scope. The only real choices are to pass them as object or dynamic. But really that is not the intention of using anonymous types. If you find yourself needing to pass an anonymous type outside of a given scope, you should really consider making a POCO (Plain Old CLR Type – i.e. a class that contains just properties to hold data with little/no business logic) instead. Given that, why use them at all? Couldn’t you always just create a POCO to represent every anonymous type you needed? Sure you could, but then you might litter your solution with many small POCO classes that have very localized uses. It turns out this is the key to when to use anonymous types to your advantage: when you just need a lightweight type in a local context to store intermediate results, consider an anonymous type – but when that result is more long-lived and used outside of the current scope, consider a POCO instead. So what do we mean by intermediate results in a local context? Well, a classic example would be filtering down results from a LINQ expression. For example, let’s say we had a List<Transaction>, where Transaction is defined something like: 1: public class Transaction 2: { 3: public string UserId { get; set; } 4: public DateTime At { get; set; } 5: public decimal Amount { get; set; } 6: // … 7: } And let’s say we had this data in our List<Transaction>: 1: var transactions = new List<Transaction> 2: { 3: new Transaction { UserId = "Jim", At = DateTime.Now, Amount = 2200.00m }, 4: new Transaction { UserId = "Jim", At = DateTime.Now, Amount = -1100.00m }, 5: new Transaction { UserId = "Jim", At = DateTime.Now.AddDays(-1), Amount = 900.00m }, 6: new Transaction { UserId = "John", At = DateTime.Now.AddDays(-2), Amount = 300.00m }, 7: new Transaction { UserId = "John", At = DateTime.Now, Amount = -10.00m }, 8: new Transaction { UserId = "Jane", At = DateTime.Now, Amount = 200.00m }, 9: new Transaction { UserId = "Jane", At = DateTime.Now, Amount = -50.00m }, 10: new Transaction { UserId = "Jaime", At = DateTime.Now.AddDays(-3), Amount = -100.00m }, 11: new Transaction { UserId = "Jaime", At = DateTime.Now.AddDays(-3), Amount = 300.00m }, 12: }; So let’s say we wanted to get the transactions for each day for each user. That is, for each day we’d want to see the transactions each user performed. We could do this very simply with a nice LINQ expression, without the need of creating any POCOs: 1: // group the transactions based on an anonymous type with properties UserId and Date: 2: byUserAndDay = transactions 3: .GroupBy(tx => new { tx.UserId, tx.At.Date }) 4: .OrderBy(grp => grp.Key.Date) 5: .ThenBy(grp => grp.Key.UserId); Now, those of you who have attempted to use custom classes as a grouping type before (such as GroupBy(), Distinct(), etc.) may have discovered the hard way that LINQ gets a lot of its speed by utilizing not on Equals(), but also GetHashCode() on the type you are grouping by. Thus, when you use custom types for these purposes, you generally end up having to write custom Equals() and GetHashCode() implementations or you won’t get the results you were expecting (the default implementations of Equals() and GetHashCode() are reference equality and reference identity based respectively). As we said before, it turns out that anonymous types already do these critical overrides for you. This makes them even more convenient to use! Instead of creating a small POCO to handle this grouping, and then having to implement a custom Equals() and GetHashCode() every time, we can just take advantage of the fact that anonymous types automatically override these methods with appropriate implementations that take into account the values of all of the properties. Summary Anonymous types are one of those Little Wonders of the .NET language that are perfect at exactly that time when you need a temporary type to hold a set of properties together for an intermediate result. While they are not very useful beyond the scope in which they are defined, they are excellent in LINQ expressions as a way to create and us intermediary values for further expressions and analysis. Hi, I would like to not show the name of each chapter on the header of its each page. I also like to have nothing in the headers for abstract, acknowledgement, table of content, list of figures and list of tables. With NVD3.js (nv.models.lineWithFocusChart), how do you set specific ticks on X-axis, when x values are dates?

I'm using nv.models.lineWithFocusChart, where I'm showing some hourly measurements. So the x domain is dates. What I need is to show a tick per hour on X axis: 00:00 01:00 02:00 ... 24:00 I've tried everything I could find but nothing works. It seems that its easy to set specific ticks when values are not dates. But can't figure out how to do it for dates. Linq where clause with multiple conditions and null check

I'm trying to check if a date is not null in linq and if it isn't check its a past date. QuestionnaireRepo.FindAll(q => !q.ExpiredDate.HasValue || q.ExpiredDate >DateTime.Now).OrderByDescending(order => order.CreatedDate); I need the second check to only apply if the first is true. I am using a single repository pattern and FindAll accepted a where clause ANy ideas? There are lots of similar questions on here but not that give the answer, I'm very new to Linq as you may of guessed :) Edit: I get the results I require now but it will be checking the conditional on null values in some cases. Is this not a bad thing?

Mass targeted malware installed - g00glestatic.com [closed]

Possible Duplicate: My server’s been hacked EMERGENCY I run a webserver which over the last few days seems to have become infected with malware that tries to include content from "http://g00glestatic.com/s.js" It appears the attacker gained access to one of the user accounts (not root), made a few changes, added a few files and ran a few bash commands. These changes stuck out clearly to me because it is not a shared server and I am the only person with access through very secure passwords. "; printf "install uprobes /bin/sh" > ololo.conf; MODPROBE_OPTIONS="-C ololo.conf" staprun -u ololo rm -f ololo.conf fi Other Noticeable Edits Any files that contain: ([.htaccess]|[index|header|footer].php|[*.js]) will have been modified and all system file and directory permissions will have been changed to: x--x--x My steps to remove this malware re uploaded original php/js files to revert any changes Changed all user passwords Modified hosts.allow to a static ip so that only I have access Removed the above 4 files and checked all modified file dates within that directory to check for any other recent modifications, none can be found Conclusion I'm hoping that as they did not have root access, any changes they wished to make higher up failed and they were only able to display an iframe on the site for a short amount of time? What else do I need to look for to check the malware infection has not spread? Second Conclusion This malware sinks too deep to 'clean', if you get infected I recommend a server nuke and rebuild from backups with increased security. Possibility It's possible that Filezilla ftp passwords were stolen through a trojan as they're unfortunately stored unencrypted. However Trend Micro Titanium has not found any. The settings box to disable passwords being saved has now been ticked, I also recommend that you take this action.
