  I am using ubuntu 11.10. I want the following 3 things: I have dell inspiron 5110 laptop. There is button at the top right corner of laptop which can be used for turning the screen off. It works in windows but it does not work in ubuntu 11.10. Even in the manual of the laptop, it the button is supported only in windows. Is there a way to activate it in ubuntu 11.10? Some of the keys like: "break" etc. are missing. Can I use other keys (or combinations of other keys) to function as those missing keys? In the program, "mouse and touchpad", there is no tab for touchpad. I want to enable vertical and horizontal scrolling. How do I do that? • Crackling sound from right laptop speaker

  This problem lasts for several months already (first on Ubuntu 13.10, not on 12.04. I get very loud cracking/popping sound from my right Asus K56C's speaker, I searched everything but could not get rid of it. Several facts: There is no problem on Windows 8. It has nothing to do with applications running because it appears even before login screen of Ubuntu. Also same problem if I boot from Live USB. Muting sound will remove noise, but lowering volume has no effect. Inserting any headphones, removes the noise. If I disconnect power cable while there is noise, noise will always disappear, but only if there is no music playing. If I start playing music, noise again appear even with power cable disconnected. Sometimes that noise disappears for 1-4 weeks, and then again appears for no reason and lasts from several days to weeks. That noise is always the same, and I tried adding tsched=0 to /etc/pulse/default.pa. Also tried this PositionReporting fix, with no effect. I also tried disconnecting all the cables and removing all electronic devices around laptop, but it has no effect. I also tried removing Pulse Audio, didn't change anything. Would be great if someone has some real solution for this problem.

• Delete Ubuntu and Grub from PC (and BIOS unaccessible)

  I've really done a mess while upgrading 12.04 to 12.10, or my PC did, or ubuntu did, I can't really tell. The situation now is I have a dual booting machine, Windows 7 and ubuntu 12.10 -When turning on the PC, I can't access boot options, I've tried every thing, esc, f1 f8, f10 (I have a Hp pavilion) but all I can see is a short-lasting screen with three lines reading something like "error:files not found" or "link not found". So the PC turns to the Grub loader screen. This is already a BIG problem. It means I can't change boot order, and I'm diperate, since it doensn't seem that repairing my operating systems will bring my BIOS back. -If I chose Ubuntu in grup, it loades but then frezes on the desktop, I may be having problem with unity3d, or compiz, which was reported to be crashing the first times I started ubuntu. Now, after turning off and on the pc several times, no crash is reported again. Ubuntu just load my background image and nothing else. Not the side menu, not the header, nothing. Althogh the system seems "functioning", when I press the power button on the PC, for example, the normal shutdown dialog window appears. -If I chose Windows, Grubs tells me that something is not found, and to press any key to continue; I do it and then Windows loads perfectly. What I now want to do is 1- use EasyBSD to change boot order and boot Windows partition first 2- delete the ubuntu partitions from within windows disk manager What I except happening is that My PC turns to, or near to factory booting settings: I press the power button and Windows loads without asking me nothing I have acess to all my hardisk from withing windows Is that what will really happen? Are there danger I'm not seeing? What I don't except happening is The BIOS access key return functioning How could I eventually solve this? I would like to reinstall Ubuntu, 32 bit version this time.

• How can I filter packets from a port monitor?

  I have some data going from Point A to Point B. I have a SPAN monitor set up to a monitoring device C. To recreate some real world scenarios, I want to filter out all traffic which is a certain type (H.323 VoIP Signaling Packets) so that C sees a subset of the information that is flowing from A to B. What would the easiest way to do this be? I assume I would need a computer with 2 NIC cards and some software to examine each packet and chuck out the H.323 VoIP packets? Thanks!

  I happened to fire up Console.app today and found lots of these messages in the log: 13/12/2011 22:54:09.291 de.devolo.networkservice: [pktifc] write: Device not configured They are being generated 8 times every 5-second interval. My network is setup as shown in the attached diagram where there are two Devolo powerline network adapters connecting the wireless access point upstairs to my modem/wifi access point/dhcp server device downstairs. I want to know what these messages mean, whether they are a problem and if so, how to solve it.

  I know that the new 5xxx series cards from ATI are capable of powering up to 6 monitors, but I was curious if anyone had any such luck setting this up under linux. I actually only have three monitors that I am interested in using, but three is the point where the previous generation video cards started to get a little buggy as a result of needing multiple video cards. In browser internet works fine so when i connect my android with at0 (access point) it should same work. but its now working at all :(

  I have 4 file servers that I want to access under a single mount point from another server. This server has a web application that should serve content from the mounted point. I think I can achieve this with glusterfs. Considering that the file servers have fairly powerful hardware, I want to install a webserver on each of them and serve those files via a reverse proxy. Any thoughts on how I may be able to do so?

• Mounting GlusterFS share under www-data user

  Problem: After directory is auto-mounted, Web Server has no write permissions to it. Question: How to auto-mount GlusterFS endpoint via /etc/fstab so that mount point belongs to www-data after it's mounted? For now, the mount point belongs to www-data, but after mounting it turns to root. # /etc/fstab foo.com:/st /st glusterfs defaults 0 0 Seams like I cannot define user / group as mount options for GlusterFS, at least I don't see it when man glusterfs. • Setting up Virtual Hosts with Apache on Windows 2008 server for multiple sites. Complicated setup,

  Hey guys! I am setting up apache on my windows 2008 server at my home. It will serve 2 functions. Subversion hosting to allow me and some others to manage company documents with version control Local website hosting for web development. Will need to run several websites since I generally work on more then one site at a time. Heres what I have done so far. I set up subversion and apache 2.2 using some walk troughs. I changed the default port to 1337. (im a nerd) Using dyndns.com I created a domain to forward to my home ip which is dynamic. ( company.gotdns.org) I then went into my DNS for my company.com and added a record to point repo.company.com to company.gotdns.org At this point people who need access to my file repository can access by going to repo.company.com/repo which is good so far. My question comes on the next step, setting up virtual hosts with apache. Ideally I would like to have my local website be viewable by some others in the company from their homes. So, say I am working on site1, I would like to have them be able to view this by going site1.roeland.bythepixel.com. At the same time, I would like to have site10.wouter.bythepixel.com go to his local setup for site10. What I have done for this: I went into my DNS for company.com and added a record to point roeland.company.com to company.gotdns.org (which translates to my ip). I added code to my httpd-vhosts.conf (listed at bottom) I added code to my host file (listed at bottom) Hah, so of course this doenst work as excepted.. going to site1.roeland.bythepixel.com doesnt bring up my test1 site. Could anyone point me where I may be going wrong? • restoring windows xp mode

  i have widows seven ultimate install on my laptop but use xp mode for many applications on it, is it possible to return an application in xp mode to an earlier restore point in just xp mode or does the host machine need to be restored i do not wish to make any changes on the host but require to either re install windows virtual pc and all the applications and upgrade them slowly to the point my application fails or restore the applications back? any advise on this will be grately recieved
