  • make IIS 7.5 cache static content files over diferent pages

    On a Windows 2008 R2, using DNS and IIS I've established my development test server; i.e. I'll have a web application that I can browse on http://test.dev I've moved all the static content files like images, js files and css files into another application which is visible on http://cdn.test.dev test.dev, uses cdn.test.dev urls like http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js to load js, css and images. When I first load "~/" of test.dev, all files will load with a response code of 200; when I press F5 in Firefox, all files, except the "~/default.aspx", will load with 304 response code; but pressing Ctrl+F5 loads them again with a 200 code; if I browse another url like "~/pages/" in test.dev, all of those static files will reload with a 200 code... Is this normal or I'm doing something wrong? Actually, I'm looking for a behavior like this: I want the client to load http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js, only once. I want the client's browser to use this jquery.js file, from cache, in all other pages of test.dev Is this possible?   • Passenger, Apache and avoiding page caching

    I'm hosting a rack application with passenger and apache. The application is setup to cache the content of each request to the public directory after each request. This allows apache to serve the content directly as a static page for future requests. I would like to tell Apache, presumably through some rewrite rules that any requests with query parameters should not be cached, but instead passed down to the rack application. With a mongrel setup I would just redirect it to the balancer if it meets my rewrite conditions. How do you do the same with passenger?

  • Varnish: User specific pages

    I'm new to Varnish and am interested in using it to speed up my web application I wanted to know if Varnish can handle caching and serving user specific content. For example if I have a page say for example /welcome which is dynamically generated in the backend and is user specific So if User John Smith shows up to /welcome it'll show in the page itself 'Welcome John Smith' and if Bob Smith shows up to /welcome it'll show 'Welcome Bob Smith' Ideally both of those /welcome pages will be cached for each unique User, is this something Varnish can do? (is this even a good Use Case of Varnish?) Thanks!

  • Varnish doesn't seem to be caching

    I've setup a Varnish cache mirror to sit in front of a file server, but it seems to be endlessly re-downloading data from my file server. There's about 100GB of data in total, but so far Varnish has downloaded 800GB from my file server. I need to set up the following: Configure the response header "Cache-Control" to have a "max-age" value of 7 days since access for all image files Configure the response header "Cache-Control" to have a "max-age" value of 5 days since modification for all static HTML files. Configure the response header "Cache-Control" to have a value of "public" for all static HTML and image files. Configure the response header "Cache-Control" to have a value of "private" for all PHP files. My question is whether it is better to use a FilesMatch, or the mod_expires ExpiresByType to best achieve this?     Our company uses these settings( don't ask me why) - for every request they want a new request from server. this is an intranet system which uses only IE. They defined it in : We also have windows authentication NTLM in the iis7. I have 2 questions please. Question #1) when the browser make a request ( css ) : (leave the 401 response for now - this is how ntlm works) He is requesting it with if-modified-since header. why is he adding this header ? How can I configure it ? why doesn't he use the settings from IE and try to download it each time - as I showed in the first picture ? Question #2) The response ( after ntlm negotiation) for that was : Response with Not-modified which is 304 header. and I assume its because we sent the request with the if-modified-since header. But there is a problem. He is actually tells me to download from my cache. But I told him explicitly in the IE settings - not to load from cache. Wham am I missing here ? Thanks a lot.

How can I avoid that? Should I carry on other headers like User-Agent or Accept-Encoding? I thing that default hashing mechanism is using url + host/IP. Compression is used at the backend. What else can improve performance?

    Our loadbalancer looks for "loadbalancer.html" So today, I deleted the file, but in a browser I could still fetch it. My eyes crossed, I made sure, 3 ways, that the file was removed from the iis web site home dir. But fetching it gave a nice 200 http response, and the file. In desperation, I created a new loadbalancer.html, and put some test text in it, and then this new content was retrieved, and then I deleted this file, and THEN it finally gave the 404 as desired. How can I better understand/control this ? Thanks!

  • Windows 7: How to prevent Windows from caching my desktop wallpaper

    I have a service running that renders a changing wallpaper every 5 minutes or so, and replaces the current image file with the new one automatically (That is to say, new image but same filename). On Linux, the change is detected almost automatically, and so I have the most current wallpaper. However, on my Windows 7 machine (Which syncs the image with my Linux machine over Dropbox), it appears to cache the wallpaper from the last time I manually set the wallpaper. The image never changes, even if I restart. Is there a way to make Windows detect the file change, or periodically refresh the wallpaper cache? I'd like to avoid third-party apps if at all possible.

    I'm currently running the Apple SUS on a Mac OS X Server in a small office environment. It works well for Apple updates, but I'm still stuck with either manually downloading and installing Adobe/Microsoft updates on each computer or running them through a Squid cache, with the blind faith that Squid will keep the files I actually want to stay cached. What is the best way to cache updates locally for applications like the Adobe Updater or Microsoft AutoUpdate? Ideally cached in such a way that I can tell which files I do or do not have cached. It would also be nice to be able to cache things for other software like Firefox and Sparkle-enabled apps, but these are usually small enough to ignore.

The server would behind a CDN but would still need to be able to handle a fair bit of traffic and be possibly load-balanced. I've been tasked with writing such a service, but I wanted to do some due diligence to see what commercial or open source solutions are out there. Google has not been particularly helpful. It may be because I have been searching for the wrong term. Third-party sites and services are out of the question because of corporate policies.

  • nHibernate strategies in a web farm

    Our current project at work is a new MVC web site that will use a WCF service primarily to access a 3rd party billing system via a web service as well as a small SQL database for user personalization. The WCF service uses nHibernate for the SQL database. We'd like to implement some sort of web farm for load balancing as well as failover and maintenance. I'm trying to decide the best way to handle nHibernate's caching and database concurrency if there are multiple WCF services running. Some scenarios I've been thinking about... 1) Multiple IIS servers, one WCF server. With this setup, the WCF server would be a single point of failure, but there would be no issues with nHibernate caching or database concurrency. 2) Multiple IIS servers, each with it's own WCF service. This removes a single point of failure, but now nHibernate on one machine would not know about database changes done by another machine. Some solutions to number 2 would be to use an IStatelessSession so we're not doing any caching and nHibernate is always fetching directly from the database. This might be the most feasible as our personalization database has very few objects in it. I'm also considering a 2nd-level cache such as memcached or Velocity, but it may be overkill for this system. I'm putting this out there to see if anyone has experience doing this sort of architecture and to get some ideas for a solution. Thanks!

    I realise there have been a few posts regarding where to add a cache check/update and the separation of concerns between the controller, the model and the caching code. There are two great examples that I have tried to work with but being new to MVC I wonder which one is the cleanest and suits the MVC methodology the best? I know you need to take into account DI and unit testing. Example 1 (Helper method with delegate) ...in controller var myObject = CacheDataHelper.Get(thisID, () => WebServiceServiceWrapper.GetMyObjectBythisID(thisID)); Example 2 (check for cache in model class) in controller var myObject = WebServiceServiceWrapper.GetMyObjectBythisID(thisID)); then in model class.............. if (!CacheDataHelper.Get(cachekey, out myObject)) { //do some repository processing // Add obect to cache CacheDataHelper.Add(myObject, cachekey); } Both use a static cache helper class but the first example uses a method signature with a delegate method passed in that has the name of the repository method being called. If the data is not in cache the method is called and the cache helper class handles the adding or updating to the current cache. In the second example the cache check is part of the repository method with an extra line to call the cache helper add method to update the current cache. Due to my lack of experience and knowledge I am not sure which one is best suited to MVC. I like the idea of calling the cache helper with the delegate method name in order to remove any cache code in the repository but I am not sure if using the static method in the controller is ideal? The second example deals with the above but now there is no separation between the caching check and the repository lookup. Perhaps that is not a problem as you know it requires caching anyway?

  • Does IE completely ignore cache control headers for AJAX requests?

    Hello there, I've got, what I would consider, a simple test web site. A single page with a single button. Here is a copy of the source I'm working with if you would like to download it and play with it. When that button is clicked, it creates a JavaScript timer that executes once a second. When the timer function is executed, An AJAX call is made to retrieve a text value. That text value is then placed into the DOM. What's my problem? IE Caching. Crack open Task Manager and watch what happens to the iexplorer.exe process (IE 8.0.7600.16385 for me) while the timer in that page is executing. See the memory and handle count getting larger? Why is that happening when, by all accounts, I have caching turned off. I've got the jQuery cache option set to false in $.ajaxSetup. I've got the CacheControl header set to no-cache and no-store. The Expires header is set to DateTime.Now.AddDays(-1). The headers are set in both the page code-behind as well as the HTTP Handler's response. Anybody got any ideas as to how I could prevent IE from caching the results of the AJAX call? Here is what the iexplorer.exe process looks like in ProcessMonitor. I believe that the activity shown in this picture is exactly what I'm attempting to prevent.

    How do I create a cache for a struct pointer object in Objective-C? Is there any third party component for caching objects as Java and .NET have? I have the following struct: typedef struct _news { references char *headline; char *story_url; } news; I have a double pointer for the above struct in an interface class. I would like to cache it for some time using Objective-C.

    Hi, Is it possible to disable to the role caching when using the ClientRoleProvider? The application in question is a console application... I've tried setting 'cacheRolesInCookie' to false (I know it's a console app, but I was running low on ideas!) - but it had no affect.

  • problem with custom NSProtocol and caching on iPhone

    My iPhone app embeds a UIWebView which loads html via a custom NSProtocol handler I have registered. My problem is that resources referenced in the returned html, which are also loaded via my custom protocol handler, are cached and never reloaded. In particular, my stylesheet is cached: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="./styles.css" /> The initial request to load the html in the UIWebView looks like this: NSString* strUrl = [NSMutableString stringWithFormat: @"myprotocol:///entry?id=%d", entryID ]; NSURL* url = [NSURL URLWithString: strUrl]; [_pCurrentWebView loadRequest: [NSURLRequest requestWithURL: url cachePolicy: NSURLRequestReloadIgnoringLocalCacheData timeoutInterval: 60 ]]; (note the cache policy is set to ignore, and I've verified this cache policy carries through to subsequent requests for page resources on the initial load) The protocol handler loads the html from a database and returns it to the client using code like this: // create the response record NSURLResponse *response = [[NSURLResponse alloc] initWithURL: [request URL] MIMEType: mimeType expectedContentLength: -1 textEncodingName: textEncodingName]; // get a reference to the client so we can hand off the data id client = [self client]; // turn off caching for this response data [client URLProtocol: self didReceiveResponse:response cacheStoragePolicy: NSURLCacheStorageNotAllowed]; // set the data in the response to our jfif data [client URLProtocol: self didLoadData:data]; [data release]; (Note the response cache policy is "not allowed"). Any ideas how I can make it NOT cache my styles.css resource? I need to be able to dynamically alter the content of this resource on subsequent loads of html that references this file. I thought clearing the shared url cache would work, but it doesnt: [[NSURLCache sharedURLCache] removeAllCachedResponses]; One thing that does work, but it's terribly inefficient, is to dynamically cache-bust the url for the stylesheet by adding a timestamp parameter: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="./styles.css?ts=1234567890" /> To make this work I have to load my html from the db, search and replace the url for the stylesheet with a cache-busting parameter that changes on each request. I'd rather not do this. My presumption is that there is no problem if I were to load my content via the built-in HTTP protocol. In that case, I'm guessing that the UIWebView looks at any Cache-Control flags in the NSURLHTTPResponse object's http headers and abides by them. Since my NSURLResponseObject has no http headers (it's not http...) then perhaps UIWebView just decides to cached the resource (ignoring the NSURLRequest caching directive?). Ideas???

  • Cache Auth Tokens (or Caching HTTP headers in General) - Best Practices

    I'm using the Ruby GData Library to access Google Docs and I recently got the GData::Client::CaptchaError because I was re-logging in with every request. Reading this post, it recommends not logging in with every request, but caching the authentication token. How do I go about doing that correctly? Google says it expires every 24 hours, and it doesn't seem like I should store it in the session, so what should I do? I'm using Ruby on Rails with all this. Thanks so much
