  Disclaimer up front - I'm definitely not going to include any links in here - this question isn't part of my marketing! I've had a few projects recently where the end product is something that developers will use. In the past I've been on the receiving end of all sorts of marketing - as a developer I've gotten no end of junk - 1000s of pens, tee-shirts and mouse pads; enough CDs to keep my desk tea-free; some very useful USB keys with some logos I no longer recognise; a small forest's worth of leaflets; a bulging spam folder full of ignored emails, etc... So that's my question - What are good ways to market to developers? And as an aside - are developers the wrong people to target? - since we so often don't have a purchasing budget anyways!

• What are the options for setting up a UNIX environment to learn C using Kernighan and Richie's The C Programming Language?

  I'm a novice programmer and have been experimenting with Javascript, jQuery and PHP but felt I wasn't getting a real depth of understanding of what I was doing. So, after reading Joel Spolsky's response to a question on this site (which I can't find now!), I took it back to basics and read Charles Petzold's 'Code' and am about to move onto Kernighan and Richie's The C Programming Language. I want to learn this in a UNIX environment but only have access to a Windows system. I have Ubuntu 12.04 running on a virtualised machine via VMWare Player, and done some coding in the terminal. Is using a Linux distro the only option for programming in a UNIX environment on Windows? And what are the next steps to start programming in C in UNIX and where do I get a compiler from?

• Wrapping up an Exciting Mobile World Congress

  Its been a busy week here in Barcelona, with noticeably more energy at the show than in 2010. This year, we decided to move the Java booth to the App Planet and really engage with the increasing number of developers that are attending the event. Our booth featured 10 demos and a series of nearly 25 workshops featuring a variety of topics ranging from information about Java Verified, to the use of web technologies with Java ME, to sessions hosted by Operators such as Orange and Telefonica (see image to the left).One of the more popular topics in our booth was the use of Java in the Smart Grid. In our booth we were showing off some of the work of the Hydra Consortium whose goal it is to leverage the emerging smart grid infrastructure to securely enable the delivery of personal health data (weight, blood pressure, etc) from the home to your doctor. • Monkey Hunter algorithm - Interview question [closed]

  Question asked in an Interview: You are a hunter in the forest. A monkey is in the trees, but you don't know where and you can't see it. You can shoot at the trees, you have unlimited ammunition. Immediately after you shoot at a tree, if the monkey was in the tree, he falls and you win. If the monkey was not in the tree, he jumps (randomly) to an adjacent tree (he has to). Find an algorithm to get the monkey in the fewest shots possible. SOLUTION: The correct answer according to me was in the comments, credit to @rtperson: You could eliminate this possibility by shooting each tree twice as you sweep left, giving you a worst case of O(2n). EDIT: ...that is, a worst case of O(2n-1). You don't need to shoot the last tree twice.

• Is it common to prototype in a higher level language?

  I'm currently toying with the idea of embarking on a project that far exceeds my current programming ability in a language I have very little real world experience in (C). Would it be valuable to prototype in a higher level language that I'm more familiar with (like Perl/Python/Ruby/C#) just so I can get the overall design going? Ultimately, the final product is performance sensitive, hence the choice of C, but I'm afraid not knowing C well will make me lose the forest for the trees. While searching for similar questions, I noticed one fellow mention that programmers used to prototype in Prolog, then crank it out in assembler.

  I'm developing an Android game and have some troubles: I want to add some foreground sprites, that must obstruct my player. Se the following example: Its a screenshot from "Shinobi 3". We can see the player, the enemy, the background and two foreground trees, that hide the player's arm and part of the enemy. I'm using AndEngine GLES2 Anchor Center and I am trying to add a new layer to my scene. Sprite Forest = new Sprite(getWidth() * 0.5f, textureHeightForest * 0.5f + 100, ResourcesManager.getInstance().foreground_forest_region, vbom); Entity foregroundLayer = new Entity(); foregroundLayer.attachChild(hillFurthest); attachChild(foregroundLayer); But it still shows behind my player sprite. I am trying to find something in HUD-class (it's always shown in the foreground), but got no results. Can anyone help please?

• Using Instance Nodes, worth it?

  I am making a 2d game where there are various environments with lots and lots of objects. There is a forest scene with like 1200 objects in total(trees mainly), of which around 100 are visible on the camera at any given time, as you move through the level. These are comprised of around 20 different kind of trees and other props. Each object is usually 2-6 triangles with a transparent texture. My developer asked me to replace each object in the scene with a node, and keeping only a minimal amount of actual objects which would be 300+ or so(?), since there are a few modified unique meshes. So he can instantiate the actual objects to keep the game light. Is this actually effective? And if so how much? I 've read about draw calls and such and I suppose that if I combine each texture (10 kinds of trees) in 1 mesh it will have the same effect?

  Is there a suitable software or a good tutorial for creating 2D rooms/scenery for adventure games from real photos? Is it possible to achieve good results by using photos, or the hand-drawn style will always be the best choice? I'm writing the game in Java for Android, but I don't think it matters. Also, I'm not trying to decide if the game will have photo realistic rooms or not - I want to achieve 2d pixelated, old-school style background scenes and I wonder if this can be made from photos, because I cannot draw them myself. For example, can I shoot a scene with my camera and then make it look something like the image in the following link: PIXEL ART FOREST I know that I cannot get the same quality as an absolutely hand-drawn pixel, but I'm looking for some decent technology/tutorial/software to make them somewhat similar.

• How to draw tile edges when you don't know where they're going.

  This is more of an art question than a programing one but still game development. I have a tile engine that makes a map randomly from tiles, each tile is a square 3x3 grid. The problem is that while the elements on each tile work well together such as having forests along the top three squares and grass on the other 6, the engine could put the forrests against anything such as rivers, grass, mountains or more forest. how can i draw the edges of the tiles so the look good no matter what they are places against ?

• How to create reproducible probability in map generation?

  So for my game, I'm using perlin noise to generate regions of my map (water/land, forest/grass) but I'd also like to create some probability based generation too. For instance: if(nextInt(10) > 2 && tile.adjacentTo(Type.WATER)) tile.setType(Type.SAND); This works fine, and is even reproduceable (based on a common seed) if the nextInt() calls are always in the same order. The issue is that in my game, the world is generated on demand, based on the player's location. This means, that if I explore the map differently, and the chunks of the map are generated in a different order, the randomness is no longer consistent. How can I get this sort of randomness to be consistent, independent of call order? Thanks in advance :)

• Drawing map tiles for iPhone game

  I'm working on a turn-based strategy game for the iPhone that has a hexagon-grid based map in it. I'm in the process of drawing up the actual tiles for the different landscapes (i.e. forest, grassland, etc.) and was wondering what program to draw the tile images in. I would assume Adobe Illustrator since a vector-based image may allow for smooth images even when the user is zoomed in really close. Is this right? Thanks!
