  • Windows XP "automatic" services not starting

    Hi I have a fresh install of WinXP. The main problem is that every time I start it up, I have to go into Administrative Tools and start the needed services, such as DCOM, RTP, DHCP, etc etc. The only services that start automatically are: plug and play remote procedure server windows audio workstation All of the rest have to be started manually, in spite of the fact that they're listed as "automatic".     Hello everyone, I'm in the process of making a script to automate DFS creation and replication for an exam I have next week. So, assuming I have a namespace: dfsutil root adddom \\Foo\bar 'My namespace' And I have a link: dfsutil link add \\Foo\Bar\CoolStuff \\Server2\CoolStuff 'Neat stuff' How can I use the command line to replicate \\Server2\CoolStuff over, say, \\Server3\CoolStuff? When I use dfscmd: dfscmd /add \\Foo\Bar\CoolStuff \\Server3\CoolStuff It says it ended correctly, but opening up the MMC shows that there are no replication groups for CoolStuff. Thanks!

  • What is a proper MySql replication configuration for frequent db updates and rare selects?

    We currently have 1 master db on its own server and slave db on app server. App executes very frequent but light updates (like increasing counters), and occasional (once in a few minutes) heavy selects (which is the most important part of the app). When app was connected only to master db there were no performance issues. With slave db introduction CPU load avg on app server increased to about 6-10 during that heavy select period (from 3-4 as before). When server doesn't run those frequent updates it seems like performance for selects stays within the limits. So I have a feeling that those updates is what is causing the performance drop (also these frequent updates are not critical so if slave db doesn't have them in sync with master for some time it would be ok). What would be a good db replication setup for such kind of app? What are the replication parameters we could tweak? Thanks.

    I'm setting up a database which needs to be needs to provide High Availabilty. My primary concern is high performance and robustness (I don't want something that will fail fast and badly). The database is accessed by the application at an average of 300 qps. It's will run on Xen VMs and it has some InnoDB tables as well as MyISAM tables. The VMs are connected via ethernet 100Mbit/s ethernet cables. Which of the two - MySQL replication or DRBD - would you recommend in such a situation? Or should I use DRBD to make the master database Highly Available and use MySQL replication on the slaves? I'm a developer so these things are all not so easy for me to make a sound judgement.

  • Consolidate data from many different databases into one with minimum latency

    I have 12 databases totaling roughly 1.0TB, each on a different physical server running SQL 2005 Enterprise - all with the same exact schema. I need to offload this data into a separate single database so that we can use for other purposes (reporting, web services, ect) with a maximum of 1 hour latency. It should also be noted that these servers are all in the same rack, connected by gigabit connections and that the inserts to the databases are minimal (Avg. 2500 records/hour). The current method is very flakey: The data is currently being replicated (SQL Server Transactional Replication) from each of the 12 servers to a database on another server (yes, 12 different employee tables from 12 different servers into a single employee table on a different server). Every table has a primary key and the rows are unique across all tables (there is a FacilityID in each table). What are my options, these has to be a simple way to do this.

    I have a file and need to ensure it exist before inserting a row into the db. After i insert i need to use the PK as part of the filename and move it into another location. How do i check if it exist then lock it so it cant be deleted until i can insert into the db then proceed to move the file without it being deleted upon releasing the lock? also the file may be in use. I am thinking of copying the file into a safe location then moving that file away. In this case i need to copy a file that is being used for reading. How can i do the above steps safely? Using .NET

    I want the user to be able to download a file from a page and have the filename extension in the Save As dialog box to be defaulted to nothing. This is the code I'm using: Response.ContentType = "text/plain" Response.AppendHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=FILE") Response.WriteFile("C:\Temp\FILE") Response.End() FILE is the actual file. It is saved on the server without any extension. Currently, the "Save As Type" drop down list in the dialog defaults to "Text Document". How can I make it so that it defaults to "All Files"?

  • All downloads being interrupted

    System: Windows 7 Professional 64bit. 8GB RAM, Intel i5-2400 CPU, +300GB free on the hard drive. AVG Internet Security 2012 (enabled & disabled, with firewall enabled and disabled - no effect for either). This computer is less than a year old. Network: This problem is occurring on a single computer on a network with multiple computers. The router is a Motorola Netopia 3347-02 (DSL Modem/Wireless Router combined). The computer is plugged in directly to the modem, other computers are using the wireless successfully. The router has been reset. The only thing odd about the connection between the router and computer is that it is configured to allow RDP through, so it is assigned a static IP by the router and port forwarding is enabled for port 3389. Also, though I doubt it matters, a second wireless router is active behind this router providing a second network that some computers in the area use without issues. Details: All downloads initiated on this specific computer eventually fail, this includes streaming from youtube, specialized downloads (itunes), downloads from websites, FTP downloads, etc. Failure occurs with all browsers, but in chrome this is the process it takes: 1) Download begins normally, 2) At some point between (observed) 7MBs and 229MBs the download stops progressing (at this point, if watching chrome's task manager, you can see the network activity for the downloading tab drop to 0kps), 3) for some time the download sits there still attempting to complete, but will eventually display "123,049,871/0 B, Interrupted" (where the number is whatever it actually got to). The file I am using to test this is a very large .zip file located on a server I control, but the problem seems to occur on any site. The amount downloaded is completely random, and seems to be more time-based than anything (if I start a download immediately after the last one fails, it tends to get further than the last one). Small files can get through for this reason, though they can fail as well. In a test where I simultaneously downloaded the same file via HTTP (chrome) and FTP (windows explorer), both downloads failed at the same instant, though explorer displayed "Connection timed out" several minutes before chrome finally showed the download as interrupted.     I'm running a website, where I'd like yo upload files with Drag 'n Drop, using HTML5's File Api and FileReader API. I have successfully managed to create a new FileReader, but I don't know how to upload the file.   • What file format can I use to output a formatted text file straight from a program without having the markup be too complicated?

    Premise: I am parsing a file that is quite nearly XML, but not quite. From this file I would like to extract data and output in a file that a user could open up in some program and read. To make the data reasonable, I would almost certainly need to format the text. In case it matters, I will probably be using Java to write the program. Problem: I cannot find a file format that supports formatting without having terribly complex rules and encoding problems. Attempts: I looked into a basic .txt extension first, but it does not have enough formatting advantage. I then tried a .rtf extension, but the rules for outputting text seem to be terribly complicated. It was then suggested that I used XML, but I do not understand how this file would be viewed. This appears to be probably the best solution, but I don't understand much about it. Perhaps somebody could shed some light here. In Other Words: Could somebody suggest and easy to use file format and/or shed some light on how to use XML for text formatting and viewing?

  • Cisco Unifed Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

Originally there was a route issue, which was resolved. We're still getting the inner exception with socket errors. We had MS support involved today, and they looked at some traces and network captures. The web service host does round-robin DNS, and they may be responding on a different IP address for the syn syn/ack from one ip, and the next from a different ip. This is not good. This is likely quite specific to our situation, but perhaps it applies to others as well. Microsoft Network Monitor and an application trace got us the information we needed.

I would like to add a file sharing service to a website, but the full Dropbox interface is still too complicated for my users, so that I’d like an API to build a dead-simple list of files integrated to the website. There is a Dropbox API project on Google Code, but it seems to be dead. PS: Extra points if the service has a free plan.

  • How to design highly scalable web services in Java?

    I am creating some Web Services that would have 2000 concurrent users. The services are offered for free and are hence expected to get a large user base. In the future it may be required to scale up to 50,000 users. There are already a few other questions that address the issue like - Building highly scalable web services However my requirements differ from the question above. For example - My application does not have a user interface, so images, CSS, javascript are not an issue. It is in Java so suggestions like using HipHop to translate PHP to native code are useless. Hence I decided to ask my question separately. This is my project setup - Rest based Web services using Apache CXF Hibernate 3.0 (With relevant optimizations like lazy loading and custom HQL for tune up) Tomcat 6.0 MySql 5.5 My questions are - Are there alternatives to Mysql that offer better performance for what I'm trying to do? What are some general things to abide by in order to scale a Java based web application? I am thinking of putting my Application in two tomcat instances with httpd redirecting the request to appropriate tomcat on basis of load. Is this the right approach? Separate tomcat instances can help but then database becomes the bottleneck since both applications access the same database? I am a programmer not a Db Admin, how difficult would it be to cluster a Mysql database (or, to cluster whatever database offered as an alternative to 1)? How effective are caching solutions like EHCache? Any other general best practices? Some clarifications - Could you partition the data? Yes we could but we're trying to avoid it. We need to run a lot of data mining algorithms and the design would evolve over time so we can't be sure what lines of partition should be there.
