• Telugu (unicode) font rendering in emacs

  I sometimes edit text in telugu language. However, when I open the file (UTF-8 encoded) in GNU emacs (version 23.1.50.1 on Ubuntu Jaunty) the text rendering is incorrect. The same text file opened in gedit is rendered correctly. Here's a snippet: ????????? ???? ???? ???????? rendred in gedit: And, the emacs rendering of the same text: Wherever glyphs need to be composited (not sure if it's the right word), emacs (or whatever library it uses) is not doing it right. Is there anyway to fix this? Perhaps tuning some setting in my configuration? Any ideas, please?

  They simple just have ttf in the repository and i am looking for a less painful way then just do change the browser referrer and download them one by one. As far as i understand it the conversation, as described in the google wiki takes effort and steps to reduce filesize ... so i just can't batch convert them. I simple want the exact files that google serves browsers for localhost (without internet) use. woff, sot, svg ...

  Does anyone know of a place where you can create your own handwritten font for free? I used to use http://www.yourfonts.com/, but now they want money. Is there some sort of free, downloadable tool to do this? BTW: There are some online programs that allow the user to create a font using a mouse. (See this question). Very cool. But, I want something that can take a scan and turn it into a font file. Any ideas?

• How to use Cambria as basic font when math symbols are needed?

  I first thought one could use Cambria for copy text (in Word), switching to Cambria Math only when needed (when a character is needed that is not present in Cambria). This does not seem to work that well. For example, if I need the minus-or-plus sign “±”, I cannot take it from Cambria, but if I use it from Cambria Math, it has a shape rather different from the style of “±”, “+”, and “–” in the text, if it is written in Cambria. Similarly, the multiplication sign “×” is much larger in Cambria Math than in Cambria. The obvious solution would be to use Cambria Math as copy text font, for uniformity. But Cambria Math lacks italic and bold. (Word’s formula editor uses Cambria Math by default and can do italic and bold, but it gets them from Plane 1 – they are special mathematic italic and mathematic bold characters, not italic and bold glyphs for normal characters.) Is there any better approach than using Cambria Math for copy text and switching to Cambria when italic or bold is needed?

  In Windows. (I know I can open Desktop > Properties > Appearance > Advanced [and figure out which item determines it; probably Menu]. But, I don't want other things changed - just the bookmarks. This is because I have so many and I want more of them to display. I did see the question on changing font size of items in folder, on bookmarks toolbar, and sub-folders, etc; But, I'm talking sidebar on firefox, I don't have Google Chrome and I am not a developer.

• How can I make the icon font color on a windows 7 prof desktop work?

  I have C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Scenes\img25.jpg as wallpaper (I think it's a standard windows wallpaper.) The desktop icon font color is white. It cannot be read without heavy eye pain. I want it to be black. I couldn't change the icon font color in advanced properties (ie the good old window color settings dialog) for aero for windows 7 professional x32. I've heard that the icon font color should change automatically to suit my needs, it doesn't work as advertised in my scenario. How could I fix it and rescue my eyes from popping out?   I've pointed the command-line to the right codepage (chcp 65001), but there's a lot of Unicode characters that Consolas and Lucida Console can't show. Specifically, I want the printable IPA characters to show up. It's not important to fix multi-codepoint glyphs, although it would be nice. How can I get such a font and install it for the command-line? Below is an example of some characters that can't be rendered.

• Gentoo+urxvt+terminus: How do I change font version?

  In my Debian installation I can type extended ASCII characters such as åäö by default using the terminus font, however in Gentoo I can't get it to work so far. Nothing happens when I hit those keys, like in this thread: Missing glyphs in Terminus font, how to setup a fallback font ? But in this case I know terminus supports those characters in at least some of its versions, since it's works in Debian. So what I want is to find out how to see and choose which of the many different terminus font files is being used. I set the font in the same way on both Debian and Gentoo, using URxvt*font: xft:terminus:size=xx in .Xdefaults. Both systems use en_US.UTF-8 as default locale.

• Bold font shortcut in WordPress editor in Mac OS X? (The equivalent to Ctrl+b in Windows)

  I've recently acquired a MacBook Air and I'm getting used to Mac OS X shortcuts. One that I can't find, though, is the change to bold a piece of text previously selected in the WordPress editor. I do this with a simple Ctrl+b after selecting the text in Windows, but the expected Command+b in Mac OS X does not work (in WordPress at least. It seems it works in other editors online and offline). Is there a shortcut for it... and for italics?

• How can I print legible text in a font size <1.5?

  For biological research, I need to print characters so tiny that 2 of them fit in less than 0.5 mm, which I will read under a microscope. I am currently printing from Excel at font size of 1.5, using a HP LaserJet 400M. The result is slightly larger than what I need it to be, but printing at size 1 produces unreadable results. How can I print a smaller font size but still get readable results? Are there specialized printers for that? Where could I find one?

  I tried following the procedure outlined in this previous answer and it doesn't work: http://superuser.com/a/5079/2366 Specifically I'm trying to add Lucida Sans Typewriter Regular to the choices of Consolas and Lucida Console that the Cmd window currently allows. Lucida Console is in registry key "0" and Consolas is in registry key "00", so I'm adding key "000" but it's not affecting the available choices in the Font tab under Properties, even after rebooting the system. P.S. I also tried adding Courier New to the choices and it shows up, but appears to select Italic instead.

• Font problems after changing non-Unicode locale to Japanese

  I recently set my system locale for non-Unicode programs to Japanese and switched it back to American English shortly afterwards. Now, just about all my non-Unicode programs use a larger dialog font without any anti-aliasing instead of Segoe UI 9, as if running on a Japanese locale. One in particular has them switched, using Segoe UI when running on a Japanese locale (be it AppLocale or system) and the Japanese font on American English! Reinstalling that particular program, as a Google search suggested, didn't do anything but reset the toolbar positions. Using Windows 7 Home Premium, and quite confused by all this.

• Excel 'Data Matrix'-Font

  Is it possible in Excel to have a font that automatically generates a 'Data Matrix'-Code from a text string. (As it is possible for usual Barcodes) Would I perhaps have to use a Add-In, because the font isn't "linear" or "one-dimensional" as barcodes are? EDIT: I found a solution (using a pretty expensive software): I simply used "NiceLabel", which is capable of using XLS-Tables as databases. Then I generated the Codes (Could be Barcodes, QR-Codes, Data Matrix Codes) from the cells in Excel. This solution doesn't automatically generate a 2D-Code into an Excel-Cell but fits for my personal needs.

• Small font all 'new' messages suddenly in Gmail on Ubuntu in Opera, why?

  This seemed to happen out of the blue. I have been using Opera for years. I can't find anywhere in Gmail to change the default font that is used in Opera. Ubuntu is Version 11 Opera is version 11.6 In Firefox the font is normal size. I have tried playing around with both all the browser setting I can find plus Ubuntu system settings (I had seen some mentions of Opera using the system default font sometimes) but no success so far. Really bumming as I have been using Opera for two years and if I can't resolve it I will not be able to use it. I can switch to Firefox but I don't want to.

• Copy + Paste Chinese From Website

  I am re-branding a website that has both English & Chinese Traditional text. When I am copying + pasting the Chinese text into notepad++, the characters gets displayed as question marks. I tried changing the language settings within notepad++ to Chinese, but it now displays as squashed rectangles. • How to Reset Windows 7 to its default font for the whole system?

  This might sound a little bit silly but please bear with me. Somehow I changed my default display font, the one that Windows uses for system dialog boxes, accept/cancel buttons, pretty much everything in the system (it even goes as far as to change how my the text in my web browser appears). Now everything that it's affected looks like under the effects of the bold button in office (very black and very thick words). This is an inconvenience for example on some mail accounts who use this effect to display unread messages. Is there any way to return it to its default state, non "bold" typography for the whole system?

  My laptop is Lenovo T400, whose screen size is 14.1 inches and default resolution is 1440 x 900. My main OS is Ubuntu 10.10. The default font size on the display is somehow small, which might contribute to the fatigue of my eyes. My previous laptop is Acer 5000, whose screen size is 15.4 inches and the default resolution is 1024 x 768. I like reading on my old laptop better than on my new one. Is it possible to change the setting of my new one to look like reading my old one? What are the parameters that control the font size? Are screen size, resolution part of them? In Windows, there are choices for font size, while in Ubuntu I haven't find out where I can change the setting and would like know if someone here knows about it. I also wonder if I can use a separate bigger display (perhaps just like a desktop display) as the display of my laptop, in case I don't want to enlarge font size at the cost of sacrificing the amount of the content to display, and how I shall do it? • How can I change font and color of the captions under the icons on the desktop?

  I am trying to use a different font and color for the captions on the icons on the desktop. Under Personalize I have been able to change the icon spacing (both horizontal and vertical) and the size of the text. But I cannot change the font nor the color of the displayed text. The font claims to have changed but it doesn't and the color pulldown menu is disabled. I use the non-Aero Windows 7 Basic but I am not able to change the font or the color.
