• JOAL with JNLPAppletLauncher Problem

  Hi, I am developing a Java Applet that makes use of JOAL. • Problem Updating/Installing Java

  I've had Java installed on my computer for a while. However lately, whenever I go to a website which has got a java applet in it, i only see a white box where the applet previously used to run (this is happening on multiple sites, not just one). I figured I might have to download java again, so I went to this page and downloaded the installer. However, each time the installer finishes downloading whatever it needs to, I get the error: 'Unable to uncompress java installer' (or perhaps its 'Unable to uncompress downloaded files'. What shall I do? I'm using Windows XP, and I'm still able to run Netbeans on the computer, the problem seems to only be with applets, and occurs in all browsers.

  I am working in a private bank, a leading mid size bank in local market. We are going to create our core banking solution. Existing solution has been developed on Java using IBM Visual Age 4.0. It is very important to discuss architecture first, we have currently more than 350 branches working in standalone mode, and it means they are working in self contained environment. They have their own database server (IBM DB2 9.7) and they are communicating with other branches via sockets to send and receive data. Having experience of .NET for more than 5 years I am trying to convince my superiors to choose .NET platform, but they are reluctant and unwilling. It is my job to encourage them for choosing best available platform to create large scale enterprise application. In simple word, we are going to create a very large scale enterprise financial application, a centralize and integrated which connects all branch networks plus having scalable, solid architecture that easily evolve over time. I want professional people to comment on above scenarios. Which platform to choose .NET or Java? Our all resource is currently working in Java, we have homogeneous environment (no Linux, no Mac and no UNIX). Any idea, any thoughts, any points technical or non-technical i.e. administrative or management point of view will be really appreciated.

  I dont understand how to use a finite state machine with the entity controlled by the player. For example i have a mario(2d platform) i can jump,run,walk,take damage,swim,etc so my first thought was to use this actions as states. But what happen when you are running when you take damage? or jumping taking damage and shooting at the same time? I just want to add functionalities(actions) to the player in a clean way(not using ifs for all the actions in the entity update)

• Newbie question about Java

  Okay, I know that Java is a language but somebody has asked me if they can write a web application to interface in with a web app I've written in ASP.NET. I'm implementing a web service to serve up an XML so it's pretty language agnostic. However, I'm not 100% sure whether going down the Java route makes a lot of sense. I was kind of expecting PHP or ASP.NET server side code with maybe some Ajax/JavaScript or maybe a heavier client JavaScript program using JScript. Could some kind sole explain the basic Java environment when it comes with webapps. I've inferred the following - am I barking up the right tree? Java when run like ASP.NET is called JSP JavaBeans is a bit like the .NET framework, i.e. it's a library of re-usable components Java EE is a bit like ASP.NET in that it's a framework for building web pages on a server Java can also run on the client but it needs the Java VM installing When running Java on the client, can you use JavaBeans and is there a framework? Can it also use JScript? I don't think so as JScript is JavaScript library. Whilst running Java on the server would be okay, this is a relatively small application and therefore Java sounds like a bit of overkill. PHP or ASP.NET feels a better fit. But I don't think they should go down the Java applet in the browser and it adds complexity that's not needed. Thanks, Rob.

  I have fallen in love with the Google Chrome App way of making an "app" (and extensions as well). What kind of installer would you recommend (free and/or cheap is preferred) that is cross-platform (Mac, Windows 2000+, Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Suse, Redhat, or derivatives)) and lets me deploy Google Chrome Apps on workstations? It would need to let me deploy Google Chrome, or update Google Chrome to a particular version, as necessary, in order for my app to work.

• Chrome Java Plugin not working after moving Java installation directory

  I recently moved all my Java installations from C:\Program Files\Java to D:\Java, as my C:\ partition only had a few MB of free space left and windows kept on bugging me about it. I also edited every registry entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft that pointed to the old directory to now point to the new one. Then changed the PATH variables and removed the old files, did a restart, and all Java applications work just fine. Yet, Chrome is the only application that seems to have a problem with what I did, as the Java Plugin isn't recognized any more. Are there any registry entires I may have missed? Maybe in the Chrome registry? How can I make this work again?

• What are some of the benefits of a "Micro-ORM"?

  I've been looking into the so-called "Micro ORMs" like Dapper and (to a lesser extent as it relies on .NET 4.0) Massive as these might be easier to implement at work than a full-blown ORM since our current system is highly reliant on stored procedures and would require significant refactoring to work with an ORM like NHibernate or EF. What is the benefit of using one of these over a full-featured ORM? It seems like just a thin layer around a database connection that still forces you to write raw SQL - perhaps I'm wrong but I was always told the reason for ORMs in the first place is so you didn't have to write SQL, it could be automatically generated; especially for multi-table joins and mapping relationships between tables which are a pain to do in pure SQL but trivial with an ORM. For instance, looking at an example of Dapper: var connection = new SqlConnection(); // setup here... var person = connection.Query<Person>("select * from people where PersonId = @personId", new { PersonId = 42 }); How is that any different than using a handrolled ADO.NET data layer, except that you don't have to write the command, set the parameters and I suppose map the entity back using a Builder. It looks like you could even use a stored procedure call as the SQL string. Are there other tangible benefits that I'm missing here where a Micro ORM makes sense to use? I'm not really seeing how it's saving anything over the "old" way of using ADO.NET except maybe a few lines of code - you still have to write to figure out what SQL you need to execute (which can get hairy) and you still have to map relationships between tables (the part that IMHO ORMs help the most with).

• Unity Dash and top toolbar won't open after updating to 12.10

  Today, I updated to Ubuntu 12.10. After re-starting, like the updater suggested, the toolbar on the top of the screen, and the dash won't load. I seem to be missing other features, as well, like alttab to switch windows, etc. I am able to access the Terminal, by typing CtrlAltT, which is how I was bale to access Firefox. • Just another web startup - platform comparison

  I'm looking to do a web startup which involves something along the lines of an ecommerce site, yet a little more in depth than that. While it's something that I would rather not go into detail with in terms of the initial idea, I can specify (on a basic level) what would be required of the website. If you have any observations or opinions derived from personal experience, which relate to what you see here, I'd appreciate it if you could share these. Paypal's API interaction (definitely). From what I've read about their API, integration with it into their website is VERY expensive, so I'd probably hold off on that until I've (hopefully) generated money and write my own simple credit-card interaction system. SQL Backend (obviously) PostgreSQL seems like a pretty good choice, as from what I've read, it's structure is a bit more "object-oriented" than, say, MySQL. Then again, I've used MySQL before and haven't had much problem with it whatsoever. Would it be worth learning PostgreSQL for this purpose? Java or .Net implementation (Preferably Mono, so I can use .Net while hosting the website using Apache). The reason for this is because, frankly, while I know PHP is a great platform to develop websites with, I hate developing with it. Before someone chimes in and flames me for saying that, note that I have nothing against the language, I just don't like it for my purposes. While Mono may be good to go with, I'm aware that ASP.Net MVC 3 hasn't been released for Mono yet, which may be a pain to work with, without their Razor syntax. Ontop of that, it seems Java is completely FULL of class libraries which deal with web development, that can be downloaded from the web. If anyone has any experience with these, I'd appreciate if that were posted. From what I've read about Spring and Struts2, they seem to be the best out there - especially since they're (AFAIK) MVC. I've considered Python and Django, which do seem REALLY nice, but I don't know much Python, and I'd rather start with something that I already know (language-wise; not framework-wise) than dive into learning a language AND a new framework. I'd REALLY like to be able to host my website via Apache, rather than using Windows Server or anything like that, as, frankly, I hate their setup. I'm not dissing it in any way, shape, or form, I'm just saying I dislike it. <3 terminal config. If there is a good reason to with Windows Server, however, I'd be willing to learn it. C# has a lot of things that Java appears not to have, including Delegates, unsigned types, and LINQ. Is there anything that Java has which can counter these?

• Web Start Application built on NetBeans Platform doesn't create desktop shortcut & start menu item

  I've created a NetBeans Platform application that is launched using Java Web Start. I built the WAR file using the 'Build JNLP Application'-command in Netbeans. I've added a desktop shortcut and menu item to the JNLP file, but for some reason, these are not created when the application is launched. However, when I go to: Control Panel - Java - Temporary Internet Files - View - Select my application Click 'Install shortcuts to the selected application' the desktop and menu shortcuts are created correctly. Also, in the Java Console, the Shortcut Creation option is set to the following (the default, I presume): Prompt user if hinted Below is a snippet of my JNLP file: <jnlp spec="6.0+" codebase="$$codebase"> <information> <title>${app.title}</title> <vendor>SomeVendor (Pty) Ltd</vendor> <description>Some description</description> <icon href="${app.icon}"/> <shortcut online="true"> <desktop/> <menu submenu="MyApp"/> </shortcut> </information> ... • How to change default font in netbeans platform?

  I'd like to know how to change the default font used in netbeans platform. I'm not asking for changing the font in the Netbeans IDE but in the platform, then all my derived applications would use this default font. A netbeans application is a group of Jcomponent so i could easily set the font of each of those components but there is still things like notifications that i can't access directly to change the font, so i think the best would be to change the font by default. Programmaticaly or any other way... maybe editing one the jar?

  Hi, I would like to develop a web application in java/spring/hibernate serving as a business platform that I could connect plugins to (i.e. CRM plugin, ware plugin, sales plugin). Those plugins could be dependent of other plugins in a tree manner. The parent project would be packaged as war having all the basic configuration and looks (spring configs, css, scripts), ready to go user and group management, security settings, etc. All together I would like it to behave and look a bit like Joomla, but built using different tools for different purposes. And I have a few questions concerning that project: Do you know of any open source projects offering such a platform ready to go? If not is maven applicable for managing those plugins? What is the best way to package and deploy those plugins? And the last but not least, basically is this the right way to go or is a dead end and it would be better to create a separate web app for those business needs?

• Impossible to do POSTs with appengine-jruby/RoR: Reflection is not allowed

  I'm trying to build a site with RoR on Google App Engine. I'm using the google-appengine gem (http://appengine-jruby.googlecode.com) and following the instructions in (http://gist.github.com/268192). The problem is that I can't submit ANY form! I've already tried this in two diferent clean Win 7 Pro envs and the result is the same. After install Ruby 1.8.6 (One-Click Installer): 1. gem update --system 2. gem install rails 3. gem install google-appengine 4. gem install rails_dm_datastore 5. gem install activerecord-nulldb-adapter 6. curl -O http://appengine-jruby.googlecode.com/hg/demos/rails2/rails2_appengine.rb 7. ruby rails2_appengine.rb (previously downloaded) 8. rails myproj 9. chmod myproj 10. ruby script/generate dd_model MyModel f1:string f2:float f3:float f4:float f5:integer f6:integer f7:integer -f 11. ruby script/generate scaffold MyModel f1:string f2:float f3:float f4:float f5:integer f6:integer f7:integer -f --skip-migration 12. dev_appserver.rb -p 3000 . At this point, I manually test the scaffold in (http://localhost:3000/my_models). The index is OK, then I create a new registry with the generated form, everything's fine, but when I try to create a second one, I get a "java.lang.RuntimeException: DummyDynamicScope should never be used for backref storage" in the console. As far as I read this is a won't-fix behavior in JRuby 1.4.1, but it's converted to a debug only warning in 1.5.0, so I proceed to install the pre release. 13. gem install appengine-jruby-jars --pre With this, that exception is solved and everything works great... until I move the project to the GAE server. 14. ruby appcfg.rb update . And now, in (http://myproj.appspot.com/my_models), again, the index is fine, also the new form, but in the moment that I submit it with valid data, I get a 500 error: "java.lang.IllegalAccessException: Reflection is not allowed on public int". As I said, this behavior is not present in the local SDK. In both cases, I'm completely unable to post anything. • Certificate error with Web Platform Installer

   A friend of mine was having an issue getting the Web Platform Installer to work on his Windows Server 2008 R2 box. He said there was some sort of cert error and asked me to try https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=158722 on my local machine to see if I got the cert error.  I tried it and I did get a cert error on Windows 7 64bit. I happened to notice that that url simply redirects to https://www.microsoft.com/web/webpi/2.0/WebProductList.xml . Out of curiosity I dropped to a command line and tried to run .\WebPlatformInstaller.exe /? to see if there were any command line options. It gave an error that said invalid URI. So we tried running it with the product list url like: "WebPlatformInstaller.exe https://www.microsoft.com/web/webpi/2.0/WebProductList.xml" . This seems to get around the expired cert that is on go.microsoft.com.  Here's a screen shot of the error:
