• Internet speed is suddenly slow only on my laptop, but it's normal in other devices

  I have a TP-Link router connected to a ZTE modem, with 2 laptops, a tablet, 2 phones connected via the router's WiFi, and an additional desktop connected via ethernet to the router. Today, my laptop started to have a very slow connection to the internet, which at first I thought it was the operator's problem to find out later on that it works fine on other devices. I tried to connect directly via WiFi to the modem, but it was as slow. I cannot access facebook at all, google takes forever to do a search, and youtube barely works. The weird thing though, is that when youtube does work, the streaming is full speed. This happens also when I download a file! My browse is Firefox, but I used Chrome and IE9 with the same results. I work on Windows 7 Thanks for any advices.

• Using watch to run a shell script - but the script goes defunct

  So I want to keep an eye on my network connectivity so I can make a report for my ISP. (seems like the modem goes out for about 30-60 seconds about once a day) So I copied this handy little script http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/simple-linux-and-unix-system-monitoring-with-ping-command-and-scripts.html And an running it with watch -n 15 ./ping-test.sh I have been testing it by pulling the plug on my modem. The first time watch runs the script after the network goes out it runs fine (sends some email) and then goes defunct. Once networking is restored the script "finishes" and then watch runs it again. So I'm getting mail for when the network goes down, but not how long it was down for. If I run the script straight from the command line it runs (emails) and then exits. Any ideas why? How can I get the script to keep running once the network is down?

• Network bottleneck/throttling issue

  Hi all, It's my first day at a new company and i've been given the task to find out an issue with the internet connection. I noticed that whilst I was downloading a large file, the network grinds to a halt, except for my download. At first I thought it was the internet connection/modem but it seems that whilst the lockdown occurs, I am unable to access any network device. Has anyone experienced this before and if so, do you have any pointers? Looking at the setup. They have an DSL modem that connects to a 10/100 switch. There are only 5-6 computers on the network. • How to check a digital certificate?

  I have extracted a certificate from a cable modem. Now I want to verify if this certificate is valid. If I understand correctly, the verification process consists of having the issuer sign the subject's public key and then comparing the result with the subject's signature. This signing process is done using the issuer's private key, which nobody but the issuer has access to. So even if I have both certificates on my PC, there is no way for me to verify the subject's validity. From this I can only conclude that the verification must be implemented as a remote service. The problem is that I don't know what remote service I need to access to verify this certificate. The issuer is "AVM GmbH Cable Modem Root Certificate Authority". How can I find the webservice for verification? Is there standard lookup mechanism for this?

• Shareing two internet connections on my laptop running Windows XP

  I have two internet connections, one is internet via our organization's corporate LAN network, and the other one is mobile broadband via a USB modem Is there anyway I can share internet connections and use them simultaneously? I want to use the corporate LAN network for normal browsing and connecting my email client, and I want to use the USB modem for establishing a VPN connection. Will I be able to maintain both the connections simultaneously? Can I have parallel downloads, one using our corporate network, and the other one using the mobile broadband? Will I be able to switch my browser between these two connections? My laptop runs Windows XP Service Pack 2.

• Why do the IP addresses randomly change?

  I have a network with the following: Cable modem with static IP address Router Desktop - Win 7 VM Host - VMware ESXi 4.0 A couple of VM Guests - Windows Every now and then my Win 7 PC is unable to access some of the VMs. When I ping the VMs by their domain name their IP address shows up as the IP address of the cable modem. Sometimes I can fix it by running ipconfig /flushdns. The IP address will reset back to what it was supposed to be, but occasionally it wont work. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?

  I have an old PC which I want to use for internet browsing. I tried using Puppy Linux (version 4.3.1) for the same but have not been able to connect. I connect via PPPoE. My network card is RTL 8029b which is automatically detected by Puppy Linux. However, the LED indicator on the MODEM designating LAN connectivity stays off. This post is being typed from the same PC running XP, so there are no connection issues. I am a complete newbie for Linux. can somebody point me to instructions. I will be willing to give any more information if required. P.S. My MODEM is Huewei Smartax MT 882 Thanks

• How can I speed up my Windows Server 2008 VPN Connection?

  So I've installed VPN service that comes with Windows Server 2008. Works perfectly, etc. When a client remote desktops to one of the private servers at the office, via VPN .. it's pretty slow. Now - how long is a piece of string? So before I get all the obligatory checks, I'll list the things from Mr. Obvious: Our modem/router (fritz!box) has a data/graph that shows incoming and outbound bandwidth. Both directions are barely getting used when a client has RDP'd via VPN. Our office internet connection is running at 21,9 Mbit/s download 1,3 Mbit/s upload. I feel like it's maxing at .. modem speeds ?? Is there any tricks I can do to confirm this and possibly even fix this?

• Ubuntu Newbie Needs Assistance!!

  New Ubuntu User Needs Help!- version 9.10 does not communicate with laptop Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, even when sitting directly under the wireless router at the local library (literally), which puts out a wickedly-fast signal that my Windows Vista OS auto-detects and immediately connects to. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all, even though I am only a few feet from the router. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I desparately wish to convert to Ubuntu. I used Mac for ten years, and then Windows for ten years. Now, after 20 years, I want to live out my days as an open-source Ubuntu fanatic. I am ready to give the old status quo the boot! I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch so that I can move on in total Ubuntu bliss? My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 2. My current email is [email protected] if you have a workable solution that does not require programmer status to implement. Surely this must be a simple fix that I simply am overlooking, but being the new guy on the block, I have yet to be enlightened. Thanks for your help in coming up to speed!!   Here's a crude representation of what I've got at home: floor 2 INTERNETS ---- MODEM/ROUTER ---- MY COMPUTER | floor 1 WIFI REPEATER ---- stuff | floor 0 more stuff TELEVISION Now, as part of our sat tv subscription we can get an additional service if we connect our decoder (located by TELEVISION obviously) to the internet. What they suggest is buying a Netgear 3DHD WIRELESS HOME THEATER NETWORKING KIT holy shit isn't my bullshit-o-meter flying high right now from the general buzzwordyness of this thing. What does this thing actually do that our existing wireless-enabled routers don't do? What's the point of having a third wifi router in the same house, this time only for one television? If I do decide to plunge €99 for this, should I connect it to the wifi repeater (which does not provide AAA quality internet, at least for all gaming purposes) or to my modem/router (risking issues with low signal?).

• Motorola SBG6850 / Linksys WRT54G network problem

  I am trying to resolve issues with connecting my desktop and LAN capable printer to my network. I recently upgrade to the Motorola Cable Modem Gateway SBG6580 and have TWC coming into it, this works great for wired and wireless connectivity. Although, I am unable to connect to my device from this modem gateway. So, I am trying to cable a Linksys WRT54G (firmware 4.21.4 build 0) to the backside of the SBG6850 so I can use my printer on my network from both my wired desktop and wireless devices. I am pulling wireless off of the SBG6580 and do not want to change this. I have disable the wireless feature on the Linksys WRT54G at this moment. Can someone please help me through this dilemma? I am open to both wired and wireless solutions, but please tell me which approach your sharing in the first line of your response. Cheers!

• Upgrading my home network to Gigabit Ethernet and Wireless-N turns out slower than before

  My home network has three desktops, three laptops and some NAS drives. All desktops and NAS drives support Gigabit LAN and all laptops support Wireless-N. I was running a 100 BaseT switch though. I recently purchased a Gigabit Ethernet Switch and an Wireless-N ADSL Modem-Router. After upgrading, I noticed that the wireless file transfer speeds from laptop-to-NAS and vice versa became terribly slow. Possibly even slower than before the upgrade. The transfer speeds from desktop-to-NAS (wired) have improved though. As an example, copying a 50GB file from laptop-to-NAS was estimated at 15 hours! Is there something I can do to improve this? Also, should I consider buying a dedicated wireless access point for speed rather than using the Wireless modem-router?

This actually worked with a basic modem connected by ethernet directly to a laptop, spoofing laptop mac address, with a cable internet provider. Now this question is specific to fiber optic internet providers who bundle with tv and internet (verizon fios, comcast xfinity). Verizon fios installation comes with an actiontec router, and there is a built in way to clone the mac address in the router configuration settings. What will happen if the mac address changes from what verizon installed it as? Will they get angry and disconnect service? Will other services other than internet stop working (tv or phone)?

• Windows 7 recognises the wrong router.

  I have a cable router connected to my cable ISP. On the LANs are 4 computers, one of which is a dual boot XP/Win7 machine. I was given an ADSL wireless router which I connected to one of the LAN sockets on my cable router. I don't have an ADSL connection. All the machines connect correctly, some wirelessly, when my dual boot machine is in XP or off. However, when I go into Win 7 on that machine it finds the ADSL router and wants to connect through that (there's no ADSL connection) instead of my cable router and modem. I've turned DHCP off on the ADSL modem and even tried bridging its connections but neither of these have any effect. To get 7 connected, I have to either disconnect the ADSL router, or switch it off. Remember, the SAME computer on the same LAN works perfectly with the same router connected in XP! How then, can I get Win 7 to recognise the correct router?

  I have two internet connections, a LAN and a 3G modem on a Windows 7 machine. The LAN is connected to a Edimax router which is conneted to the ISP (with their own modem). Now, the Edimax router is set to auto assign IP adresses in the range: 168.192.2.100 and 192.168.2.200 I wanted to block internet explorer to access the LAN. I entered my AVG firewall, selected iexplorer and added a "block" rule which blocked all ports, TCP and UDP protocols for the above IP range. The problem is it did not work, not matter what rules I have tried. Can you recommend a firewall that can easily accomplish this? Ty

  I am on my way to Europe for 20 days with the wife and teenage kids. Among us, we have 3 iPhones, 1 Blackberry, 2 iPad 3G and 2 Macbook Pro laptops. Each has Skype. I am very concerned about AT&T data charges, and I am looking for a sensible alternative. For example, the AT&T data plans for the phones and iPads are $200 EACH for 200 MB per device. That is $1,200 and does not even cover the laptops. Ouch!!! I am thinking about a prepaid data plan from a European cell system of some sort combined with a GSM data modem and a Cradlepoint router, such as the CTR500. So, questions: 1) Anyone know of a GSM data source in Europe where I can buy a GSM Modem compatible with the CTR500 at a reasonable prepaid rate? 2) Experience with the CTR500?

The point is to temporarily join two apartments in a building for gaming and file sharing, and the holy grail would be: PCs on network A can access PCs on network B and vice-versa (file shares and gaming). Data between networks shouldn't take a trip through the internet (broadband upload speeds are severely capped) A network's internet access should continue working if the joining cable is disconnected with minimal configuration changes. How closely can this be achieved?

• Windows Fax Server Leaves Documents in "Pending" Status

  We are having an issue with Windows Fax Server on Windows Server 2008. Occasionally, the server will get into a state where after adding jobs to the outbox, they will simply remain at the pending status (without any attempt to send them). There is nothing in the event log mentioning a problem. It typically seems to enter the state after restarting the server or after no faxes have been sent for a while. The way to fix the issue has been to: Stop the Fax service Go into the modem properties in device manager and query modem Start the Fax service - at which point all the pending faxes in the outbox will send.

  Are there any computer vendors (like Dell, Lenovo, or..) that still sell laptops with an internal serial port? We are using several modem and other kind of box at work that have to be used (and/or programmed) with serial port (RS232, DB9, ..). We tried many usb/pcmcia serial adapter which run fine when used to load programs on the boxes but not with modems. The protocol behind the RTC connection (with modem) need timer we are not able to reach when using an adapter (maybe until we find a very good adapter), and that leads to my question..

• Dual WAN port on a WRT54GL

  Is it possible to reconfigure one of the LAN ports on a WRT54GL (running Tomato firmware) to act as a second WAN port? I have the following networks: PPOE connection to ADSL modem (works fine on the normal WAN port) WiFi neighbourhood network (in 178.X.X.X range), via a Mikrotik routerboard which I'd like to put on the WAN side of the router. I'd then like to set up routing so than some traffic (172.X.X.X) is routed to the Mikrotik and the rest to the ADSL modem. p.s. for practical reasons, I can't use the Mikrotik as the firewall/router. Edit: It seems this can be done by editing iptables, can someone tell me exactly how?

It is currently like this: internet - modem - wireless router - wired server/clients | |---- wireless clients but I need to move the router to get a better signal for the wireless clients. So, I'm looking at this: internet - modem - server - switch - wired clients | |---- wireless router - wireless clients How do I set up the server to enable this? Also, what set ups do the clients need. The server is Ubuntu 9.04 and the clients are a mix of Windows XP / 7, Ubuntu and printers. I believe this new set up will allow me to control access to the internet, which would be useful.

• Mac internet problems

  Our office is set up with mostly macs (7 of them) but we do have a windows laptop and a windows desktop on the network as well. The network is configured with a modem going into a switch/router throughout the office to the computers, along with a wireless router. Everything runs fine most of the time, but periodically while using the web, certain sites will stop loading and timeout repeatedly. This usually lasts 20 minutes or so and can be incredibly annoying. Resetting the modem/router and/or rebooting the computer never helps. The weirdest part is that in almost every case, the websites are fine on our Windows machines. I frequently use github, google, Stack Overflow, and jQuery reference and I can count on the sites being unavailable to me at least once a day. While I can't get them to load, I can spin my chair around to the windows server behind me and load the sites just fine. Any idea what the hell could be going on here?
