What exactly is it doing, and is it necessary?. From my (admitedly limited) understanding of Apache configuration files, this means that anyone will be able to access (write to?) the /path/to/websites/ folder. Is my understanding correct? - and if yes, how is this not a security risk?

  • linux hardware raid 10 / lvm / virtual machine partition alignment and filesystem optimization

    I've been reading everything I can find about partition alignment and filesystem optimization (ext4 and xfs) but still don't know enough to be confident in setting up my current configuration. My remaining confusion comes from the LVM layer and if I should use raid parameters on the filesystem in guest os'es. My main questions are: When I use 'pvcreate --dataalignment' do I use the stripe-width as calculated for a filesystem on RAID (128kB for ext4 in my situation), the Stripe size of the RAID set (256kB), something else altogether, or do I not need this? When I create ext2/3/4 or xfs filesystems in guests on the Logical Volumes, should I add the settings for the underlying RAID (e.g. mkfs.ext4 -b 4096 -E stride=64,stripe-width=128)? Does anyone see any glaring errors in my set up below? I'm running some benchmarks now but haven't done enough to start comparing results. I have four drives in RAID 10 on a 3ware 9750-4i controller (more details on the settings below) giving me a 6.0TB device at /dev/sda. Here is my partition table: Model: LSI 9750-4i DISK (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 5722024MiB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 1.00MiB 257MiB 256MiB ext4 BOOTPART boot 2 257MiB 4353MiB 4096MiB linux-swap(v1) 3 4353MiB 266497MiB 262144MiB ext4 4 266497MiB 4460801MiB 4194304MiB Partition 1 is to be the /boot partition for my xen host. I know there are other ways of handling that but this method works best for my situation. Here's the hardware of interest on my CentOS 6.3 Xen Host: 4x Seagate Barracuda 3TB ST3000DM001 Drives (sector size: 512 logical/4096 physical) 3ware 9750-4i w/BBU (sector size reported: 512 logical/512 physical) All four drives make up a RAID 10 array.   • Mounting an FTP as a virtual disk (FTPDrive analogue)

    FTPDrive has been a great utility for me, but it does not support 64bit Windows 7. The feature of FTPDrive that is useful for me is accesing files from an FTP as local files without pre-downloading so that I can preview and watch movies from a local FTP server without waiting for a full movie to get downloaded first. Do you know of any software which allows accessing files over FTP without pre-downloading? Thanks!

    I suspect I'm a bit offtopic with the site mission, but it seems me more fitting for the question than stackoverflow i'm in preparing to create a vm with sensible data (personal use, it will be a web+mail+... appliance of sorts), i'd like to protect the data even with cryptography; the final choice have to be cross-platform for the host basically, I have to choose between guest system-level cryptography (say, dm-crypt or similar) or host level cryptography with truecrypt. do you think that the "truecrypt-volume contained virtualized disks" approach will hit the i/o performance of the vm badly (and therefore dm-crypt like approaches into the vm would be better), or is it doable? I'd like to protect all the guest data, not only my personal data, to be able to suspend the vm freely without worrying for the swap partition, etc

    I am in the process of following a guide to setup various oracle vm templates, so far I have installed OVS 2. 2 and got the OVM Manager working, imported the template for OEL5U5 and created a vm from it.. the problem comes when starting that vm.   • Virtual PC lost parent disk for differential vhd

    2 years ago I had that brilliant idea to create base Windows XP disk which all of my VM with XP will use. Of course it ended that I had only one VM with XP :-). Today I needed to make some free space on my HDD so I found one not used VM named "Windows XP" which had only 5GB. I deleted it as fast as possible :-) and of course I used shift to not use "Recycle bin". Now when I want to run my XP VM I have following error: "One of the parent hard disks of ... is missing." It's not a problem for me as soon as I can restore files from this differential vhd that I have right now. So: I have differential disk with files I need I don't have parent disk My question is: How can I restore files from this differential hvd?

  • How to specify a different ip address in virtual box guest os

    I am using Windows 7 as the host. And xp as guest. I've already check out this site: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=17232 But the info is not complete. What do I need to set here, so that the guest would have another IP Address but can still connect to the internet. Because what I'm trying to accomplish here is to be able to try Team Viewer or Cross loop. With the host os and guest os. Because I only have one computer.

  • Alias a Virtual Directory or Application as Root on IIS 7

    Our current IIS setup as two applications running on different paths at (for example) http://server/sub-a and http://server/sub-b. I want to alias http://server/sub-a as root so that just going to http://server/ will bring up the contents of sub-a. The problem I face is that when I initially set up a ReverseProxy it negatively affected http://server/sub-b. I know this is a fairly common problem- how have you solved it? 99.9% of my experience is with Apache, so I feel a tad lost in the GUI world of IIS.

    I have a VM created in VMWare Player. It's VHD is currently sized 17 GB, split among multiple 2 GB files. The host OS is Windows 8. I use CrashPlan in host OS for file backup. The problem is, whenever I use the VM, CrashPlan detects all parth of VHD as altered and backs up the 17 GB VHD. WHat I want is a software that can run on host OS (Windows 8), treat the VHD as a physical hard disk and create incremental backups of the VHD, includeing all files, programs and the OS

    i am trying to establish a VPN Connection in my GuestOS. But i get a timeout every Time. The Host : Win 7 The Guest: WinXp Software: VM-Workstation 8 The GuestOS is bridged to the Host network and has his own IP. The normal Connection in the GuestOS works fine but when i try to establish the VPN (no Programm used , just simple Windows VPN) i get an timeout? But i can establish the VPN from the Host without any problems... Any Ideas here? Thanks Ps:(If it matters: The VPN is PPTP from StrongVPN)

    I need some help in setting up a dumb-terminal type concept for Windows machines. We have a computer lab with 40 computers, all of them are ageing. Unfortunately, we don't have enough funds to get all of them replaced. On the other side, we have very powerful rack servers which are quite underutilized. I was thinking of a solution which would enable those lab computers to use the rack servers. Remote desktop is an option, but I wanted something that is more transparent to the end user.   • Orchestrating the Virtual Enterprise, Part I

It turned raw materials into a showroom full of Model Ts. It owned a steel mill, a glass factory, and an automobile assembly line. The company was both self-sufficient and innovative and went on to become one of the largest and most profitable companies in the world. Nowadays, it's unusual for any business to follow this vertical integration model because its much harder to be best in class across such a wide a range of capabilities and services. Instead, businesses focus on their core competencies and outsource other business functions to specialized suppliers. They exchange vertical integration for collaboration. When done well, all parties benefit from this arrangement and the collaboration leads to the creation of an agile, lean and successful "virtual enterprise." Case in point: For Sun hardware, Oracle outsources most of its manufacturing and all of its logistics to third parties. These are vital activities, but ones where Oracle doesn't have a core competency, so we shift them to business partners who do. Within our enterprise, we always retain the core functions of product development, support, and most of the sales function, because that's what constitutes our core value to our customers. This is a perfect example of a virtual enterprise.  What are the implications of this? It means that we must exchange direct internal control for indirect external collaboration. This fundamentally changes the relative importance of different business processes, the boundaries of security and information sharing, and the relationship of the supply chain systems to the ERP. The challenge is that the systems required to support this virtual paradigm are still mired in "island enterprise" thinking. But help is at hand. Developments such as the Web, social networks, collaboration, and rules-based orchestration offer great potential to fundamentally re-architect supply chain systems to better support the virtual enterprise.  Supply Chain Management Systems in a Virtual Enterprise Historically enterprise software was constructed to automate the ERP - and then the supply chain systems extended the ERP. They were joined at the hip. In virtual enterprises, the supply chain system needs to be ERP agnostic, sitting above each of the ERPs that are distributed across the virtual enterprise - most of which are operating in other businesses. This is vital so that the supply chain system can manage the flow of material and the related information through the multiple enterprises. It has to have strong collaboration tools. It needs to be highly flexible. Users need to be able to see information that's coming from multiple sources and be able to react and respond to events across those sources.  Oracle Fusion Distributed Order Orchestration (DOO) is a perfect example of a supply chain system designed to operate in this virtual way. DOO embraces the idea that a company's fulfillment challenge is a distributed, multi-enterprise problem. It enables users to manage the process and the trading partners in a uniform way and deliver a consistent user experience while operating over a heterogeneous, virtual enterprise. This is a fundamental shift at the core of managing supply chains. It forces virtual enterprises to think architecturally about how best to construct their supply chain systems. In my next post, I will share examples of companies that have made that shift and talk more about the distributed orchestration process.

  • Is CUDA, cuBLAS or cuBLAS-XT the right place to start with for machine learning?

    I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this question - but it surely is no question for stackoverflow. I work on my bachelor thesis and therefore I am implementing a so called Echo-State Network which basically is an artificial neural network that has a large reservoir of randomly initialized neurons and just a few input and output neurons .. but I think we can skip that. The thing is, there is a Python library called Theano which I am using for this implementation. It encapsulates the CUDA API and offers a quiet "comfortable" way to access the power of a NVIDIA graphics card. Since CUDA 6.0 there is a sub-library called cuBLAS (Basic Linear Algebra Subroutines) for LinAlg operations and also a cuBLAS-XT an extention which allows to run calculations on multiple graphics cards. My question at this point is if it would make sense to start using cuBLAS and/or cuBLAS-XT right now since the API is quite complex or rather wait for libraries that will build up on those library (such as Theano does on basic CUDA)? If you think this is the wrong place for this question please tell me which one is, thank you.

For example: http://somesite.com?passes=dodgy+parameter # BAD http://anothersite.com?passes=a+good+parameter # GOOD My system can make a binary decision about whether or not a URL is good or bad - but ideally I would like it to predict whether or not a previously unseen URL is good or bad. http://some-new-site.com?passes=a+really+dodgy+parameter # BAD I feel the need for a support vector machine (SVM) ... but I need to learn machine learning. Some questions: 1) Is an SVM appropriate for this task? 2) Can I train it with the raw URLs? - without explicitly specifying 'features' 3) How many URLs will I need for it to be good at predictions? 4) What kind of SVM kernel should I use? 5) After I train it, how do I keep it up to date? 6) How do I test unseen URLs again the SVM to decide whether it's good or bad? I

    Hi, Currently, i'm using the method "VkKeyScan" in the win32 api to convert a character to its virtual keycode. But the problem that this seems to have is that, when i pass small alphabets, it works fine whereas when i pass in a capital alphabet, it doesnt return the appropriate keycode and similarly with special characters like "(" or "}" .. How do i do this? Is there anyway for me to directly convert a string to its virtual equivalent without considering whether it contains capitalized or special characters? Thanks

  • Machine Learning Algorithm for Peer-to-Peer Nodes

    I want to apply machine learning to a classification problem in a parallel environment. Several independent nodes, each with multiple on/off sensors, can communicate their sensor data with the goal of classifying an event as defined by a heuristic, training data or both. Each peer will be measuring the same data from their unique perspective and will attempt to classify the result while taking into account that any neighbouring node (or its sensors or just the connection to the node) could be faulty. Nodes should function as equal peers and determine the most likely classification by communicating their results. Ultimately each node should make a decision based on their own sensor data and their peers' data. If it matters, false positives are OK for certain classifications (albeit undesirable) but false negatives would be totally unacceptable. Given that each final classification will receive good or bad feedback, what would be an appropriate machine learning algorithm to approach this problem with if the nodes could communicate with each other to determine the most likely classification?

  • Virtual microphone, networks and vb.net

    I would like to add a virtual microphone (similar to how you can have a virual CD drive and then mount ISO files on it.) so that it can be selectable in programs like MSN and skype. But have the source of the audio be streamed from over a network(I know how to stream the audio over the network in VB.net) but how do I get that audio which has been streamed as the input to the virtual microphone?
