• Debian - Problems Unmounting External Hard Drives

  I recently installed Debian Testing on a new laptop and I just noticed that I am having some issues with unmounting external hard drives. I am using Mate Desktop 1.8.1. With the 1st drive, if I right click on the drive and select “safely remove”: The drive unmounts, spins down, immediately spins back up an remounts. Unable to unmount. With the 2nd drive, if I right click on the drive and select “safely remove”: The drive unmounts but does not spin down. With the 3rd drive, if I right click on the drive and select “safely remove”: The drive unmounts but does not spin down, immediately spins back up but does not remount, and after 20 seconds, it spins down and stays that way. Behavior is the same on both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. On my last laptop, on which I also used Debian Testing + Mate desktop, the safe removal of drives worked out of the box and I never had an issue with it. The drives would unmount, spin down and stay that way. To remount the drive, one needed to unplug the device and plug it back in. I am unsure how to troubleshoot this issue and I am not sure if it is merely a matter of installing a “missing” package of editing a config file. Thank you in advance.

• Mysql InnoDB and quickly applying large updates

  Basically my problem is that I have a large table of about 17,000,000 products that I need to apply a bunch of updates to really quickly. The table has 30 columns with the id set as int(10) AUTO_INCREMENT. I have another table which all of the updates for this table are stored in, these updates have to be pre-calculated as they take a couple of days to calculate. This table is in the format of [ product_id int(10), update_value int(10) ]. The strategy I'm taking to issue these 17 million updates quickly is to load all of these updates into memory in a ruby script and group them in a hash of arrays so that each update_value is a key and each array is a list of sorted product_id's. { 150: => [1,2,3,4,5,6], 160: => [7,8,9,10] } Updates are then issued in the format of UPDATE product SET update_value = 150 WHERE product_id IN (1,2,3,4,5,6); UPDATE product SET update_value = 160 WHERE product_id IN (7,8,9,10); I'm pretty sure I'm doing this correctly in the sense that issuing the updates on sorted batches of product_id's should be the optimal way to do it with mysql / innodb. I'm hitting a weird issue though where when I was testing with updating ~13 million records, this only took around 45 minutes. Now I'm testing with more data, ~17 million records and the updates are taking closer to 120 minutes. I would have expected some sort of speed decrease here but not to the degree that I'm seeing. Any advice on how I can speed this up or what could be slowing me down with this larger record set? As far as server specs go they're pretty good, heaps of memory / cpu, the whole DB should fit into memory with plenty of room to grow.

• Too many connections to Sql Server 2008

  I have an application in C# Framework 4.0. Like many app this one connects to a data base to get information. In my case this database is SqlServer 2008 Express. The database is in my machine In my data layer I’m using Enterprise Library 5.0 When I publish my app in my local machine (App Pool Classic) Windows Professional IIS 7.5 The application works fine. I’m using this query to check the number of connections my application is creating when I’m testing it. SELECT db_name(dbid) as DatabaseName, count(dbid) as NoOfConnections, loginame as LoginName FROM sys.sysprocesses WHERE dbid > 0 AND db_name(dbid) = 'MyDataBase' GROUP BY dbid, loginame When I start testing the number of connection start growing but at some point the max number of connection is 26. I think that’s ok because the app works When I publish the app to TestMachine1 • XP Mode Virtual Machine (Windows XP Professional) • IIS 5.1 It works fine, the behavior is the same, the number of connections to the database increment to 24 or 26, after that they stay at that point no matter what I do in the application. The problem: When I publish to TestMachine2 (App Pool Classic) • Windows Server 2008 R2 • IIS 7.5 I start to test the application the number of connection to the database start to grow but this time they grow very rapidly and don’t stop growing at 24 or 26, the number of connections grow till the get to be 100 and the application stop working at that point. I have check for any difference on the publications, especially in Windows Professional and Windows Server and they seem with the same parameters and configurations. Any clues why this could be happening? , any suggestions?

• IE8 page reload hangs

  When a 7mb HTM file is first opened (by clicking on the file icon or using Open With), both IE8 and Firefox display this browser file quickly. After the file is closed, Firefox will reopen this file quickly, but IE8 appears to hang during the reopen. Clearing the IE cache does not help. However, IE will reopen the file quickly again only if the File/Open/Browse feature of the menu bar is used (clicking on the file icon can be used only once between computer reboots). Testing suggests that the problem relates to the number of HTML hyperlinks pointing to another part of the file. There are many hyperlinks, but they are not a problem during the first load of the document (between computer reboots). What needs to be fixed to avoid use of the workaround? Using Windows XP SP3 Update 6/23/12 - Controlled testing shows that the number of hyperlinks is not the problem. The way this large file is opened is the difference: 1) from the IE menu bar, File/Open/Browse is consistent and fast (but not as fast as FF). 2) clicking on the file name in the folder (even when IE is the default program for this file type) causes a much delayed load of the file. Creating a smaller file demonstrates the delayed load, but verifies that the load eventually occurs.

• Cannot run a VM with more than three network interfaces with KVM

  I'm running KVM on top of Ubuntu 10.10 Server I can create VM's (Virtual Machine) and network interfaces fine but I cannot seem to add more than three network interfaces. As soon as I have a VM with four network interfaces it gets stuck on startup at the starting SeaBIOS page with this message: Starting SeaBIOS (version pre-0.6.1-20100702_143500-palmer) So far I've verified this with two VM's, a Ubuntu 10.10 desktop and a Vyatta router. The specific network hardware I assign to the VM's doesn't seem to matter. I'm trying to have one bridged interface and three private networks using Vyatta to route between them. Does anyone know why I can't run a VM with more than three network interfaces? Edit: Additionally the KVM thread responsible for the specific VM hangs using ~100% CPU (i.e. one core). • External USB attached drive works in Windows XP but not in Windows 7. How to fix?

  Earlier this week I purchased this "N52300 EZQuest Pro" external hard drive enclosure from here. I can connect the enclosure using USB 2.0 and access the files in both NTFS partitions on the MBR partitioned drive when I use either Windows XP (SP3) or Mac OS X 10.6. So it works as expected in XP & Snow Leopard. However, the enclosure does not work in Windows 7 (Home Premium) either 64-bit or 32-bit or in Ubuntu 10.04 (kernel 2.6.32-23-generic). I'm thinking this must be a Windows 7 driver problem because the enclosure works in XP & Snow Leopard. I do know that no special drivers are required to use this enclosure. It is supported using the USB mass storage drivers included with XP and OS X. It should also work fine using the mass storage support in Windows 7, no? FWIW, I have also tried using 32-bit Windows 7 on both my desktop, a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 with a Pentium Dual-Core E6500 @ 2.93GHz, and on my early 2008 MacBook. I see the same failure in both cases that I see with 64-bit Windows 7. So it doesn't appear to be specific to one hardware platform. I'm hoping someone out there can help me either get the enclosure to work in Windows 7 or convince me that the enclosure hardware is bad and should be RMAed. At the moment though an RMA seems pointless since this appears to be a (Windows 7) device driver problem. I have tried to track down any updates to the mass storage drivers included with Windows 7 but have so far come up empty. Heck, I can't even figure out how to place a bug report with Microsoft since apparently the grace period for Windows 7 email support is only a few months. I came across a link to some USB troubleshooting steps in another question. I haven't had a chance to look over the suggestions on that site or try them yet. Maybe tomorrow if I have time ... ;-) I'll finish up with some more details about the problem. When I connect the enclosure using USB to Windows 7 at first it appears everything worked. Windows detects the drive and installs a driver for it. Looking in Device Manager there is an entry under the Hard Drives section with the title, Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 USB Device. When you open Windows Disk Management the first time after the enclosure has been attached the drive appears as "Not initialize" and I'm prompted to initialize it. This is bogus. After all, the drive worked fine in XP so I know it has already been initialized, partitioned, and formatted. So of course I never try to initialize it "again". (It's a 1 GB drive and I don't want to lose the data on it). Except for this first time, the drive never shows up in Disk Management again unless I uninstall the Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 USB Device entry under Hard Drives, unplug, and then replug the enclosure. If I do that then the process in the previous paragraph repeats. In Ubuntu the enclosure never shows up at all at the file system level. Below are an excerpt from kern.log and an excerpt from the result of lsusb -v after attaching the enclosure. It appears that Ubuntu at first recongnizes the enclosure and is attempting to attach it, but encounters errors which prevent it from doing so. When I use Firewire I can connect whether I'm using Windows 7 or Ubuntu 10.04. I even tried booting my Gigabyte desktop as an OS X 10.6.3 Hackintosh and it worked there as well. (Though if I recall correctly, it also worked when using USB 2.0 and booting OS X on the desktop. Certainly it works with USB 2.0 and my MacBook.) I believe the firmware on the device is at the latest level available, v1.07. I base this on the excerpt below from the OS X System Profiler which shows Firmware Revision: 0x107. Bottom line: It's nice that the enclosure is actually usable when I connect with Firewire. But I am still searching for an answer as to why it does not work correctly when using USB 2.0 in Windows 7 (and Ubuntu ... but really Windows 7 is my biggest concern).   I am using kvm and libvirt on my Dell server. Now i am trying to migrate one virtual machine from a physical server to another. However, I failed everytime. • EC2 Filesystem / Files stored on the wrong partiton after launching new instance from AMI

  Today I set up a new EC2 Instance from and AMI I created from an older EC2 instance. When I launched the new instance I took the AMI that was on a small instance and launched with a medium instance. From what I can tell this is pretty standard stuff. But here's the stang part. According to AWS these are the differences Small Instance (Default) 1.7 GB of memory, 1 EC2 Compute Unit (1 virtual core with 1 EC2 Compute Unit), 160 GB of local instance storage, 32-bit or 64-bit platform Medium Instance 3.75 GB of memory, 2 EC2 Compute Units (1 virtual core with 2 EC2 Compute Units each), 410 GB of local instance storage, 32-bit or 64-bit platform Okay now here's where I'm having an issue. I when I log into the new bigger instance it still reports only having 1.7 GB of ram. The other strange part is that all my old partitions are still their in the same configurations. I see a new larger partition /mnt which is essential empty. • Quantifying the effects of partition mis-alignment

  I'm experiencing some significant performance issues on an NFS server. I've been reading up a bit on partition alignment, and I think I have my partitions mis-aligned. I can't find anything that tells me how to actually quantify the effects of mis-aligned partitions. Some of the general information I found suggests the performance penalty can be quite high (upwards of 60%) and others say it's negligible. What I want to do is determine if partition alignment is a factor in this server's performance problems or not; and if so, to what degree? So I'll put my info out here, and hopefully the community can confirm if my partitions are indeed mis-aligned, and if so, help me put a number to what the performance cost is. Server is a Dell R510 with dual E5620 CPUs and 8 GB RAM. There are eight 15k 2.5” 600 GB drives (Seagate ST3600057SS) configured in hardware RAID-6 with a single hot spare. • Cannot reinstall Windows on Toughbook CF-19, OEM or upgrade issue?

  My Toughbook (CF-19) has a 'Windows Vista Business OEMAct, Panasonic' COA on the bottom of the unit. When I extracted the key before reformatting - it was a 'Windows XP Professional' Product Name and the Product ID code has 'OEM' in it...and I can confirm this upgrade was last OS installed (w/ Service Pack 3) - but there was the tablet functionality. This extracted product key isn't working with any version of Windows I try installing. XP Pro, XP Pro Tablet 2005 OEM, Tablet XP OEM. Any insights?

  I've got an old Juniper SSG5 running ScreenOS 5.4.0r6.0. Once a day, more or less, it'll start randomly dropping packets at a rate of ~5-10%. We currently solve this issue by simply rebooting the unit, after which it resumes working in perfect condition. As this error has started appearing randomly, without any configuration or hardware changes, I'm assuming I've got an aging unit about to fail. As such, I've got a replacement SSG5 running ScreenOS 6.0. I've dumped the config on the 5.4 and imported it into a clean 6.0, and it seems to gladly accept it, and all my configuration seems to be A-OK. However, upon connecting the new unit, all outside-initiated connections seem to be blocked. If I browse our external IP from the inside, everything works perfectly, and it's not just port 80, SSH, Crashplan - all of our policies route correctly. All normal networking, initiated from the inside, work perfectly as well. If on the other hand I browse our external IP from the outside, everything is blocked. Barring differences between ScreenOS 5.4 and 6.0, the config is identical. • SAS Expanders vs Direct Attached (SAS)?

  I have a storage unit with 2 backplanes. One backplane holds 24 disks, one backplane holds 12 disks. Each backplane is independently connected to a SFF-8087 port (4 channel/12Gbit) to the raid card. Here is where my question really comes in. Can or how easily can a backplane be overloaded? All the disks in the machine are WD RE4 WD1003FBYX (black) drives that have average writes at 115MB/sec and average read of 125 MB/sec I know things would vary based on the raid or filesystem we put on top of that but it seems to be that a 24 disk backplane with only one SFF-8087 connector should be able to overload the bus to a point that might actually slow it down? Based on my math, if I had a RAID0 across all 24 disks and asked for a large file, I should, in theory should get 24*115 MB/sec wich translates to 22.08 GBit/sec of total throughput. Either I'm confused or this backplane is horribly designed, at least in a perfomance environment. I'm looking at switching to a model where each drive has it's own channel from the backplane (and new HBA's or raid card). EDIT: more details We have used both pure linux (centos), open solaris, software raid, hardware raid, EXT3/4, ZFS. • Screen is greyed out after power failure shutdown: Mac OSX

  When the battery power is down and the unit not plugged in the computer is forced into a sleep mode requiring pushing the start button when power is re-connected. The initial desktop screen appears to be greyed out and is unresponsive with a timer bar which, when the timing sequence is complete restores an active desktop. I can't find any reference to this phenomenon in the OSX literature I have. Any pointers to where I can get more information? Perhaps I am using the wrong search criteria?

• Take VMware VM State Home With Me

  I work in VMs day in and day out, it's wonderful, encapsulating all the stuff I need for development in a contained unit. My question is: I want to be able to take my VM home with me, the problem is the VM is 30GB, and it takes about 30 minutes to copy that much data to my external HDD. Is it possible to somehow save the "state" of the VM, go home, and just resume it like a I would a laptop? Oh... almost forgot, I use VMware Workstation 6.5
