  • Open source alternative to WebEx WebOffice?

    - by Dieseltime
I have a client who has been using WebOffice (from WebEx) for a variety of tasks within their small organization. The problem is that they only really need a small subset of the features WebOffice provides (Contact list, Database, and Document Storage). They've asked me to develop a website focused on these three features with the rationalization that this should be more cost-effective, since they currently aren't using many of the features of WebOffice they pay for. What are some open-source alternatives that I could implement for them? Sharepoint sounds like it would be too bloated and Google Apps may not be as collaborative as they would like.

  • All Countries States Cities and Zipcodes in a Application

    - by Rishav Rastogi
Is there a way getting all countries, states, cities zipcodes/ in one single database. I have been looking all over. I discovered geonames.org, which has I guess all of the content. But there is no way to fetch that data directly. I am using rails. If there any helpers or Plugins, it'd be great. It would be awesome if there is a complete resource in any parsable format which I can use to get this database in place. Please recommend if you any thanks I do have the iso country code list but no States for some countries. Thanks in advance

  • Adding a JPanel to another JPanel having TableLayout

    - by user253530
    I am trying to develop a map editor in java. My map window receives as a constructor a Map object. From that map object i am able to retrieve the Grid and every item in the grid along with other getters and setters. The problem is that even though the Mapping extends JComponent, when I place it in a panel it is not painted. I have overridden the paint method to satisfy my needs. Here is the code, maybe you could help me. public class MapTest extends JFrame implements ActionListener { private JPanel mainPanel; private JPanel mapPanel; private JPanel minimapPanel; private JPanel relationPanel; private TableLayout tableLayout; private JPanel tile; MapTest(Map map) { mainPanel = (JPanel) getContentPane(); mapPanel = new JPanel(); populateMapPanel(map); mainPanel.add(mapPanel); this.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(800, 600)); this.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); this.setVisible(true); } private double[][] generateTableLayoutSize(int x, int y, int size) { double panelSize[][] = new double[x][y]; for (int i = 0; i < x; i++) { for (int j = 0; j < y; j++) { panelSize[i][j] = size; } } return panelSize; } private void populateMapPanel(Map map) { double[][] layoutSize = generateTableLayoutSize(map.getMapGrid().getRows(), map.getMapGrid().getColumns(), 50); tableLayout = new TableLayout(layoutSize); for(int i = 0; i < map.getMapGrid().getRows(); i++) { for(int j = 0; j < map.getMapGrid().getColumns(); j++) { tile = new JPanel(); tile.setName(String.valueOf(((Mapping)map.getMapGrid().getItem(i, j)).getCharacter())); tile.add(map.getMapItem(i, j)); String constraint = i + "," + j; mapPanel.add(tile, constraint); } } mapPanel.validate(); mapPanel.repaint(); } public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { throw new UnsupportedOperationException("Not supported yet."); } } My Mapping Class public class Mapping extends JComponent implements Serializable{ private BufferedImage image; private Character character; //default public Mapping() { super(); this.image = null; this.character = '\u0000'; } //Mapping from image and char public Mapping(BufferedImage image, char character) { super(); this.image = image; this.character = character; } //Mapping from file and char public Mapping(File file, char character) { try { this.image = ImageIO.read(file); this.character = character; } catch (IOException ex) { System.out.println(ex); } } public char getCharacter() { return character; } public void setCharacter(char character) { this.character = character; } public BufferedImage getImage() { return image; } public void setImage(BufferedImage image) { this.image = image; repaint(); } @Override /*Two mappings are consider the same if -they have the same image OR -they have the same character OR -both of the above*/ public boolean equals(Object mapping) { if (this == mapping) { return true; } if (mapping instanceof Mapping) { return true; } //WARNING! equals might not work for images return (this.getImage()).equals(((Mapping) mapping).getImage()) || (this.getCharacter()) == (((Mapping) mapping).getCharacter()); } @Override public void paintComponent(Graphics g) { super.paintComponent(g); //g.drawImage(image, 0, 0, null); g.drawImage(image, 0, 0, this.getWidth(), this.getHeight(), null); } // @Override // public Dimension getPreferredSize() { // if (image == null) { // return new Dimension(10, 10); //instead of 100,100 set any prefered dimentions // } else { // return new Dimension(100, 100);//(image.getWidth(null), image.getHeight(null)); // } // } private void readObject(java.io.ObjectInputStream in) throws IOException, ClassNotFoundException { character = (Character) in.readObject(); image = ImageIO.read(ImageIO.createImageInputStream(in)); } private void writeObject(java.io.ObjectOutputStream out) throws IOException { out.writeObject(character); ImageWriter writer = (ImageWriter) ImageIO.getImageWritersBySuffix("jpg").next(); writer.setOutput(ImageIO.createImageOutputStream(out)); ImageWriteParam param = writer.getDefaultWriteParam(); param.setCompressionMode(ImageWriteParam.MODE_EXPLICIT); param.setCompressionQuality(0.85f); writer.write(null, new IIOImage(image, null, null), param); } }

  • Looking for Hardware that will easily interface with my .NET code.

    - by SkippyFire
I'm a .NET C# developer looking to do some hardware interfacing/programming. I just want something super simple to mess around with. I have done one of those basic stamp projects, but I want something with less electrical work. A self-contained piece of hardware would be fine. I'm not really looking to do embedded programming... but that would actually be pretty cool if something was capable of running .net code. I'm looking for something that would be easy to connect, hopefully via USB. Serial ports seems to be more hit or miss nowadays with laptops and netbooks. Something I can easily send data to, like a mini LCD, or series of LED's. Better yet would be something that provides feedback, like a temperature sensor. The best would be something more featured that I could talk to. I would be able to send data to it, and it would send back responses. Maybe something like a servo that could report it's position? Or maybe something that I could set parameters on? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  • What am I missing about WCF?

    - by Bigtoe
I've been developing in MS technologies for longer than I care to remember at this stage. When .NET arrived on the scene I thought they hit the nail on the head and with each iteration and version I thought their technologies were getting stronger and stronger and looked forward to each release. However, having had to work with WCF for the last year I must say I found the technology very difficult to work with and understand. Initially it's quite appealing but when you start getting into the guts of it, configuration is a nightmare, having to override behaviours for message sizes, number of objects contained in a messages, the complexity of the security model, disposing of proxies when faulted and finally moving back to defining interfaces in code rather than in XML. It just does not work out of the box and I think it should. We found all of the above issues while either testing ourselves or else when our products were out on site. I do understand the rationale behind it all, but surely they could have come up with simpler implementation mechanism. I suppose what I'm asking is, Am I looking at WCF the wrong way? What strengths does it have over the alternatives? Under what circumstances should I choose to use WCF? OK Folks, Sorry about the delay in responding, work does have a nasty habbit of get in the way somethimes :) Some clarifications My main paint point with WCF I suppose falls down into the following areas While it does work out of the box, your left with some major surprises under the hood. As pointed out above basic things are restricted until they are overridden Size of string than can be passed can't be over 8K Number of objects that can be passed in a single message is restricted Proxies not automatically recovering from failures The amount of configuration while it's there is a good thing, but understanding it all and what to use what and under which circumstances can be difficult to understand. Especially when deploying software on site with different security requirements etc. When talking about configuration, we've had to hide lots of ours in a back-end database because security and network people on-site were trying to change things in configuration files without understanding it. Keeping the configuration of the interfaces in code rather than moving to explicitly defined interfaces in XML, which can be published and consumed by almost anything. I know we can export the XML from the assembley, but it's full of rubbish and certain code generators choke on it. I know the world moves on, I've moved on a number of times over the last (ahem 22 years I've been developing) and am actively using WCF, so don't get me wrong, I do understand what it's for and where it's heading. I just think there should be simplier configuration/deployment options available, easier set-up and better management for configuration (SQL config provider maybe, rahter than just the web.config/app.config files). OK, back to the daily grid. Thanks for all your replies so far. Kind Regards Noel

  • Serverside image processing

    - by spol
I am designing a web application that does server side image processing in real time. Processing tasks include applying different effects like grayscale, blur, oil paint, pencil sketch etc on images in various formats. I want to build it using java/servlets which I am already familiar with. I found 3 options, 1) Use pure java imaging libraries like java.awt or http://www.jhlabs.com/ip/index.html 2) Use command line tools like Gimp/ImageMagick 3) Use c,c++ image libraries that have java bindings. I don't know which of the above options is good keeping the performance in mind. It looks like option 2) and 3) are good performance wise, but I want to be sure before I rule out 1). I have also heard gimp cannot be run using command line unless gtk or xwindows is already installed on the server. Will there be any such problems with 2) or 3) while running them server side? Also please suggest any good image processing libraries for this purpose.

Hello, If you visit this site: http://www.catswhocode.com/blog/ You would see that there is an image and summary for each post. What is the proper way to implement that? Is this done using wordpress custom fields? Or whether this is coded in image.php file present in theme folder? How do i do that? Thanks

  • Any good tutorials or resources for learning how to design a scalable and "component" based game 'fr

    - by CodeJustin.com
In short I'm creating a 2D mmorpg and unlike my last "mmo" I started developing I want to make sure that this one will scale well and work well when I want to add new in-game features or modify existing ones. With my last attempt with an avatar chat within the first few thousand lines of code and just getting basic features added into the game I seen my code quality lowering and my ability to add new features or modify old ones was getting lower too as I added more features in. It turned into one big mess that some how ran, lol. This time I really need to buckle down and find a design that will allow me to create a game framework that will be easy to add and remove features (aka things like playing mini-games within my world or a mail system or buddy list or a new public area with interactive items). I'm thinking that maybe a component based approach MIGHT be what I'm looking for but I'm really not sure. I have read documents on mmorpg design and 2d game engine architecture but nothing really explained a way of designing a game framework that will basically let me "plug-in" new features into the main game and use the resources of the main game without changing much within my 'main game code'. Hope someone understands what I mean, any help will is appreciated.

  • Programming Technique: How to create a simple card game

    - by Shyam
Hi, As I am learning the Ruby language, I am getting closer to actual programming. So I was thinking of creating a simple card game. My question isn't Ruby orientated, but I do know want to learn how to solve this problem with a genuine OOP approach. In my card game I want to have four players. Using a standard deck with 52 cards, no jokers/wildcards. In the game I won't use the Ace as a dual card, it is always the highest card. So, the programming problems I wonder about are the following: How can I sort/randomize the deck of cards? There are four types, each having 13 values. Eventually there can be only unique values, so picking random values could generate duplicates. How can I implement a simple AI? As there are tons of card games, someone would have figured this part out already, so references would be great. I am a truly Ruby nuby, and my goal here is to learn to solve problems, so pseudo code would be great, just to understand how to solve the problem programmatically. I apologize for my grammar and writing style if it's unclear, for it is not my native language. Also pointers to sites where such challenges are explained, would be a great resource! Thank you for your comments, answers and feedback!

  • Caching web API proxy?

    - by Jeremy Dunck
I was wondering if anyone knows of a caching proxy specifically for dealing with API responses? Ideally, I'd be able to declare what caching policy to use for different API semantics, e.g. cache album art for 1 day, cache favorite tweets for 5 minutes, cache map tiles forever, except invalidate when this other API is called. I know about using Apache, Squid, etc for caching in general -- I'm just hoping for something with nicer usage semantics by restricting the design goal to dealing with APIs rather than the web in general.

  • How to get Tomcat Working on WIndows 7?

    - by Zakir Hossain

However If I try to start the tomcat configuration tool or monitor tool from the start menu I can not start any of the Tomcat's services. I get an error in a message box stating "Access Deined. Unable to open Tomcat 5.5". What seems to be the problem? and How can I solve it? Even restarting the PC won't help. I also have JDK and JRE installed. Turing the firewall doesn't work too. • Enterprise ASP.NET MVC application architecture

    - by Ben
I am still trying to figure out the right architecture for a complex ASP.NET MVC web application. I looked in a lot of example code and everywhere it's done differently. I would really appreciate your thoughts on this. Another Question: Would you use Linq to SQL or the Entity Framework? Thanks, -Ben

  • Django Models / SQLAlchemy are bloated! Any truly Pythonic DB models out there?

    - by Luke Stanley
"Make things as simple as possible, but no simpler." Can we find the solution/s that fix the Python database world? from someAmazingDB import * class Task (model): title = '' isDone = False db.taskList = [] #or db.taskList = expandableTypeCollection(Task) #not sure what this syntax would be db['taskList'].append(Task(title='Beat old sql interfaces',done=False)) db.taskList.append(Task('Illustrate different syntax modes',True)) #at this point it should autosave #we should be able to reload the console and access like: >> from someAmazingDB import * >> print 'Done tasks:' >> for task in db.taskList: >> if task.done: >> print task 'Illustrate different syntax modes' I'm a fan of Python, webPy and Cherry Py, and KISS in general. We're talking automatic Python to SQL type translation or NoSQL. We don't have to totally be SQL compatible! Just a scalable subset or ignore it! Re:model changes, it's ok to ask the developer when they try to change it or have a set of sensible defaults. Here is the challenge: The above code should work with very little modification or thinking required. Why must we put up with compromise when we know better? It's 2010, we should be able to code scalable, simple databases in our sleep. If you think this is important, please upvote!

  • What learning habits can you suggest?

    - by Asaf R
Hi, Our profession often requires deep learning; sitting down and reading, and understanding. I'm currently undergoing an exam period, and I'm looking for ways to learn more effectively. I'm not asking about what to learn, or whether to prefer blogs over books, etc. My question is much more physical than that - What do you do when need to study, and I mean study hard? I'm looking for answers such as I slice my time to 2.5 hours intervals and make a break between them, but never during. I keep a jar of water nearby. I wake up at 6 o'clock sharp and start my day with a session at the gym. What good learning habits did acquire, or wish you had acquired? (I know this isn't strictly programming related, but it is programmers related)

  • i18n and l10n web guidelines

    - by Konstantin Petrukhnov
Is there any standards/guidelines/good practices for making websites with support of different content and UI? I'm interesting in articles/tutorials, that cover this topics. E.g. there going to be website for multiple countries. And user should have possibility to select UI and content languages separately. I assume that not all content will be translated, so there should be some mechanism for showing "default language" content for specific page. But again, should this "default" be per site, or per country? E.g. in some countries (Belgium, Finland) there are several official languages. If one language is unavailable, should default be second one, or English? Another example: many people prefer English UI (no mater of their origin), but want local scales (inches, meters) and local services. I don't care much about programing languages now, just want to understand what users are expected, what should be scope, and what are good practices.

  • Find the flaws in the concept...

    - by Trindaz
A web based web browser. Sounds silly right? Here's a use case. All comments about what could go wrong, and if anyone has tried and failed at this, very much wanted User goes to www.theBrowser.com and logs in with credentials specific to theBrowser.com. User tells theBrowser what their username and password for various sites are User goes to theBrowser.com/?uri=somesite.com theBrowser sends off the http request with User's log in details, then sends the http response back to User. This lets theBrowser do weird and wonderful functions like change colours / style sheets / etc. to every site that gets passed through it. From a technical stand point, storing username and password and passing them along is not a challenge for one user, but if there were a few, I'd have to use some kind of server based browser software to store a session per user logged in at theBrowser.com. How could I do that? Will I have to start from scratch? Obviously privacy and security are issues. Would theBrowser.com be too great a risk, even if users are fully warned? Cheers, Dave

  • How do I prepare myself for a summer of working on Python using Linux environment?

    - by Shailesh Tainwala
Hi, I have used just Windows for programming so far. Now, I have an internship starting in two weeks and I will be using just Linux environment with Python programming language. I've installed Ubuntu on my system but have no exposure to shell scripting. I need some advice on how I can quickly learn to use the Linux terminal quickly. Any books or web resources that you can suggest? Also, is there a particular IDE that is generally preferred for Python programming on Linux, or is Vim preferred? How can I best prepare myself for the internship ahead? Thanks for taking the time.

  • How Gridview co-operates with ObjectDataSource?

    - by sanjuro
Hi, how Gridview co-operates with ObjectDataSource internally? When you set DataSourceID of GridView, assigned ObjectDataSource take care of such things as paging and sorting, but i don't have full control above databinding itself, on the other side when i set datasource of gridview in code-behind: protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (!IsPostBack) { testGridView.DataSource = testObjectDataSource.Select(); testGridView.DataBind(); } } Now i have full control, but i have lost the advantage of comfort sorting and paging. And that co-operation between ObjectDataSource and Gridview became mystery for me. So can anybody explain me in details how ObjectDataSource and Gridview co-operates under the hood? I want to understand it in order to write my own smart code or own gridview that will mimic this co-operation. Many thanks for answers.
