  • Is it bad practice to declare an array mid-function...

    - by Maximus
In C, which would be more proper... void MyFunction() { int* array; int size; //do a bunch of stuff size = 10; array = (int*)(sizeof(int)*size); //do more stuff... //no longer need array... free(array); } Or is something like this okay? void MyFunction() { int size; //do a bunch of stuff size = 10; array[size]; //do more stuff... } The malloc uses the heap instead of the stack, so I suppose if you know size is going to be very large you'd want to malloc... but if you're quite certain size will be small enough, would the second method be reasonable?

  • Why does Java ArrayList use per-element casting instead of per-array casting?

    - by user1111929
What happens inside Java's ArrayList<T> (and probably many other classes) is that there is an internal Object[] array = new Object[n];, to which T Objects are written. Whenever an element is read from it, a cast return (T) array[i]; is done. So, a cast on every single read. I wonder why this is done. To me, it seems like they're just doing unnecessary casts. Wouldn't it be more logical and also slightly faster to just create a T[] array = (T[]) new Object[n]; and then just return array[i]; without cast? This is only one cast per array creation, which is usually far less than the number of reads. Why is their method to be preferred? I fail to see why my idea isn't strictly better?

  • Issues using a Fedex Webservice via WDSL/SOAP

    - by Parris
Hi Everyone, I downloaded the sample code to request a rate from fedex's website... i placed the WSDL file in the proper location, I have my acct number, password, meter number, and key. When I run the script I get this error: Error in processing transaction. ERROR prof 1000 Authentication Failed The script they give is as follows, and yes i do actually replace the XXX and YYY everywhere it says.: <?php // Copyright 2009, FedEx Corporation. Isn't the point of using SOAP and WSDL to avoid using CURL, Direct Connect type stuff?

  • Pseudocode: a clear definition?

    - by Cian E
The following code is an example of what I think would qualify as pseudocode, since it does not execute in any language but the logic is correct. string checkRubric(gpa, major) bool brake = false num lastRange num rangeCounter string assignment = "unassigned" array bus['business']= array('person a'=>array(0, 2.9), 'person b'=>array(3, 4)) array cis['computer science']= array('person c'=>array(0, 2.9), 'person d'=>array(3, 4)) array lib['english']= array('person e'=>array(0, 4)) array rubric = array(bus, cis, lib) foreach (rubric as fieldAr) foreach (fieldAr as field => advisorAr) if (major == field) foreach (advisorAr as advisor => gpaRangeAr) rangeCounter = 0 foreach (gpaRangeAr as gpaValue) if (rangeCounter < 1) lastRange = gpaValue else if (gpa >= lastRange && gpa <= gpaValue) assignment = advisor brake = true break endif rangeCounter++ endforeach if (brake == true) break endif endforeach if (brake == true) break endif endif endforeach if (brake == true) break endif endforeach return assignment For the past couple of weeks I've been trying to create a clear definition of what pseudocode actually is. Is it relative to the programmer or is there an actual clearcut syntax? I say pseudocode is any code that does not execute, how about you? Thanks (links to this subject welcome)

  • Alternative to array_shift function

    - by SoLoGHoST
Ok, I need keys to be preserved within this array and I just want to shift the 1st element from this array. Actually I know that the first key of this array will always be 1 when I do this: // Sort it by 1st group and 1st layout. ksort($disabled_sections); foreach($disabled_sections as &$grouplayout) ksort($grouplayout); Basically I'd rather not have to ksort it in order to grab this array where the key = 1. And, honestly, I'm not a big fan of array_shift, it just takes to long IMO. Is there another way. Perhaps a way to extract the entire array where $disabled_sections[1] is found without having to do a foreach and sorting it, and array_shift. I just wanna add $disabled[1] to a different array and remove it from this array altogether. While keeping both arrays keys structured the way they are. Technically, it would even be fine to do this: $array = array(); $array = $disabled_sections[1]; But it needs to remove it from $disabled_sections. Can I use something like this approach... $array = array(); $array = $disabled_sections[1]; $disabled_sections -= $disabled_sections[1]; Is something like the above even possible?? Thanks.

  • Dilemma of Sending a Byte Array from JavaScript to COM.

    - by Voulnet
Hello there, I'm having a bit of a problem because neither Javascript nor ActiveX (written in C++) are behaving like good little children. All I'm asking them to do is for Javascript to send a byte array and for the ActiveX to receive the byte array correctly in order to do more computation. This is how I declared my byte array in JS, and I verified it inside JS: var arr = new Array(0x00, 0xA4, 0x04, 0x00, 0x10,0xA0, 0x00, 00, 00, 0x18, 0x30, 0x03, 0x01, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00, 00); Javascript sends this array as an argument to an ActiveX method. Here is the tricky part; I want the ActiveX method to receive the byte array as a SAFEARRAY or VARIANT, but I can't get it to work for the life of me. I tried debugging and seeing the contents received inside the ActiveX as both SAFEARRAY or VARIANT, but to no avail. Here is the IDL segment: [id(7), helpstring("NEW Sends APDU to Card and Reads the Response")] HRESULT NewSendAPDU( [in] VARIANT pAPDU, [out, retval]VARIANT* pAPDUResponse); Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • Best practice for writing ARRAYS

    - by Douglas
I've got an array with about 250 entries in it, each their own array of values. Each entry is a point on a map, and each array holds info for: name, another array for points this point can connect to, latitude, longitude, short for of name, a boolean, and another boolean The array has been written by another developer in my team, and he has written it as such: names[0]=new Array; names[0][0]="Campus Ice Centre"; names[0][1]= new Array(0,1,2); names[0][2]=43.95081811364498; names[0][3]=-78.89848709106445; names[0][4]="CIC"; names[0][5]=false; names[0][6]=false; names[1]=new Array; names[1][0]="Shagwell's"; names[1][1]= new Array(0,1); names[1][2]=43.95090307839151; names[1][3]=-78.89815986156464; names[1][4]="shg"; names[1][5]=false; names[1][6]=false; Where I would probably have personally written it like this: var names = [] names[0] = new Array("Campus Ice Centre", new Array[0,1,2], 43.95081811364498, -78.89848709106445, "CIC", false, false); names[1] = new Array("Shagwell's", new Array[0,1], 43.95090307839151, -78.89815986156464, 'shg", false, false); They both work perfectly fine of course, but what I'm wondering is: 1) does one take longer than the other to actually process? 2) am I incorrect in assuming there is a benefit to the compactness of my version of the same thing? I'm just a little worried about his 3000 lines of code versus my 3-400 to get the same result. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

  • Strange Bubble sort behaviour.

    - by user271528
    Can anyone explain why this bubble sort function doesn't work and why I loose number in my output. I'm very new to C, so please forgive me if this is something very obvious I have missed. #include <stdio.h> #include int bubble(int array[],int length) { int i, j; int temp; for(i = 0; i < (length); ++i) { for(j = 0; j < (length - 1); ++j) { if(array[i] array[i+1]) { temp = array[i+1]; array[i+1] = array[i]; array[i] = temp; } } } return 0; } int main() { int array[] = {12,234,3452,5643,0}; int i; int length; length = (sizeof(array)/sizeof(int)); printf("Size of array = %d\n", length); bubble(array, length); for (i = 0; i < (length); ++i) { printf("%d\n", array[i]); } return 0; } Output Size of array = 5 12 234 3452 0 0

  • How do I mock a method with an open array parameter in PascalMock?

    - by Oliver Giesen
I'm currently in the process of getting started with unit testing and mocking for good and I stumbled over the following method that I can't seem to fabricate a working mock implementation for: function GetInstance(const AIID: TGUID; out AInstance; const AArgs: array of const; const AContextID: TImplContextID = CID_DEFAULT): Boolean; (TImplContextID is just an alias for Integer) I thought it would have to look something like this: function TImplementationProviderMock.GetInstance( const AIID: TGUID; out AInstance; const AArgs: array of const; const AContextID: TImplContextID): Boolean; begin Result := AddCall('GetInstance') .WithParams([@AIID, AContextID]) .ReturnsOutParams([AInstance]) .ReturnValue; end; But the compiler complains about the .ReturnsOutParams([AInstance]) saying "Bad argument type in variable type array constructor.". Also I haven't found a way to specify the open array parameter AArgs at all. Also, is using the @-notation for the TGUID-typed parameter the right way to go? Is it possible to mock this method with the current version of PascalMock at all? Update: I now realize I got the purpose of ReturnsOutParams completely wrong: It's intended to be used for populating the values to be returned when defining the expectations rather than for mocking the call itself. I now think the correct syntax for mocking the out parameter would probably have to look more like this: function TImplementationProviderMock.GetInstance( const AIID: TGUID; out AInstance; const AArgs: array of const; const AContextID: TImplContextID): Boolean; var lCall: TMockMethod; begin lCall := AddCall('GetInstance').WithParams([@AIID, AContextID]); Pointer(AInstance) := lCall.OutParams[0]; Result := lCall.ReturnValue; end; The questions that remain are how to mock the open array parameter AArgs and whether passing the TGUID argument (i.e. a value type) by address will work out...

  • Facebook Stream.Get -- How to access data in array?

    - by user316841
On stream.get, I try to echo $feeds["posts"][$i]["attachment"]["href"]; It return the URL, but, in the same array scope where "type" is located (which returns string: video, etc), trying $feeds["posts"][$i]["attachment"]["type"] returns nothing at all! Here's an array through PHP's var_dump: http://pastie.org/930475 So, from testing I suppose this is protected by Facebook? Does that makes sense at all? Here it's full: http://pastie.org/930490, but not all attachment/media/types has values. It's also strange, because I can't access through [attachment][media][href] or [attachment][media][type], and if I try [attachment][media][0][type] or href, it gives me a string offset error. ["attachment"]=> array(8) { ["media"]=> array(1) { [0]=> array(5) { ["href"]=> string(55) "http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1392999461587" ["alt"]=> string(13) "IN THE STUDIO" ["type"]=> string(5) "video" My question is, is this protected by Facebook? Or we can actually access this array position?

  • Ruby: Why is Array.sort slow for large objects?

    - by David Waller
A colleague needed to sort an array of ActiveRecord objects in a Rails app. He tried the obvious Array.sort! but it seemed surprisingly slow, taking 32s for an array of 3700 objects. So just in case it was these big fat objects slowing things down, he reimplemented the sort by sorting an array of small objects, then reordering the original array of ActiveRecord objects to match - as shown in the code below. Tada! The sort now takes 700ms. That really surprised me. Does Ruby's sort method end up copying objects about the place rather than just references? He's using Ruby 1.8.6/7. def self.sort_events(events) event_sorters = Array.new(events.length) {|i| EventSorter.new(i, events[i])} event_sorters.sort! event_sorters.collect {|es| events[es.index]} end private # Class used by sort_events class EventSorter attr_reader :sqn attr_reader :time attr_reader :index def initialize(index, event) @index = index @sqn = event.sqn @time = event.time end def <=>(b) @time != b.time ? @time <=> b.time : @sqn <=> b.sqn end end

  • Sorted array: how to get position before and after using name? as3

    - by user1560239
I have been working on a project and Stack Overflow has helped me with a few problems so far, so I am very thankful! My question is this: I have an array like this: var records:Object = {}; var arr:Array = [ records["nh"] = { medinc:66303, statename:"New Hampshire"}, records["ct"] = { medinc:65958, statename:"Connecticut"}, records["nj"] = { medinc:65173, statename:"New Jersey"}, records["md"] = { medinc:64596, statename:"Maryland"}, etc... for all 50 states. And then I have the array sorted reverse numerically (descending) like this: arr.sortOn("medinc", Array.NUMERIC); arr.reverse(); Can I call the name of the record (i.e. "nj" for new jersey) and then get the value from the numeric position above and below the record in the array? Basically, medinc is medium income of US states, and I am trying to show a ranking system... a user would click Texas for example, and it would show the medinc value for Texas, along with the state the ranks one position below and the state that ranks one position above in the array. Thanks for your help!

  • (Ogre3D) Using a 3D texture slice as a 2D texture input.

    - by ~mech
Hello, I am trying to do something with Ogre using 3D textures. I would like to update a 3D-texture by going through it slice-by-slice and recalculating the color values. However, in each step I also need to access the previous slice somehow to read the values. Setting up a slice as a render target is easy, but is it possible to feed such a slice as a 2D-texture input to a shader, or do I need to explicitly copy it into a separate 2D texture? Thanks.

  • Zend hostname route doesn't match when it has child routes

    - by talisker
I am implementing an Admin module, which contains the following routes: 'router' => array( 'routes' => array( 'admin' => array( 'type' => 'Zend\Mvc\Router\Http\Hostname', 'options' => array( 'route' => ':subdomain.mydomain.local', 'constraints' => array( 'subdomain' => 'admin', ), 'defaults' => array( 'module' => '__NAMESPACE__', 'controller' => 'Admin\Controller\Index', 'action' => 'index', ), ), 'priority' => 9000, 'may_terminate' => true, 'child_routes' => array( 'users' => array( 'type' => 'Zend\Mvc\Router\Http\Literal', 'options' => array( 'route' => '/users', 'defaults' => array( 'module' => '__NAMESPACE__', 'controller' => 'Admin\Controller\Users', 'action' => 'index', ), ), ), ) ), ), ), And this is the home route configuration: 'home' => array( 'type' => 'Zend\Mvc\Router\Http\Literal', 'options' => array( 'route' => '/', 'defaults' => array( 'controller' => 'Application\Controller\Index', 'action' => 'index', ), ), ), When I try to access to http://admin.mydomain.com, the route match always with the homeroute, but if I remove all the child routes from the admin route, the behavior is correct and a http://admin.mydomain.com matches with the adminroute. Any idea?

  • Where to add an overloaded operator for the tr1::array?

    - by phlipsy
Since I need to add an operator& for the std::tr1::array<bool, N> I wrote the following lines template<std::size_t N> std::tr1::array<bool, N> operator& (const std::tr1::array<bool, N>& a, const std::tr1::array<bool, N>& b) { std::tr1::array<bool, N> result; std::transform(a.begin(), a.end(), b.begin(), result.begin(), std::logical_and<bool>()); return result; } Now I don't know in which namespace I've to put this function. I considered the std namespace as a restricted area. Only total specialization and overloaded function templates are allowed to be added by the user. Putting it into the global namespace isn't "allowed" either in order to prevent pollution of the global namespace and clashes with other declarations. And finally putting this function into the namespace of the project doesn't work since the compiler won't find it there. What had I best do? I don't want to write a new array class putted into the project namespace. Because in this case the compiler would find the right namespace via argument dependent name lookup. Or is this the only possible way because writing a new operator for existing classes means extending their interfaces and this isn't allowed either for standard classes?

  • Algorithm to determine if array contains n...n+m?

    - by Kyle Cronin
I saw this question on Reddit, and there were no positive solutions presented, and I thought it would be a perfect question to ask here. This was in a thread about interview questions: Write a method that takes an int array of size m, and returns (True/False) if the array consists of the numbers n...n+m-1, all numbers in that range and only numbers in that range. The array is not guaranteed to be sorted. (For instance, {2,3,4} would return true. {1,3,1} would return false, {1,2,4} would return false. The problem I had with this one is that my interviewer kept asking me to optimize (faster O(n), less memory, etc), to the point where he claimed you could do it in one pass of the array using a constant amount of memory. Never figured that one out. Along with your solutions please indicate if they assume that the array contains unique items. Also indicate if your solution assumes the sequence starts at 1. (I've modified the question slightly to allow cases where it goes 2, 3, 4...) edit: I am now of the opinion that there does not exist a linear in time and constant in space algorithm that handles duplicates. Can anyone verify this? The duplicate problem boils down to testing to see if the array contains duplicates in O(n) time, O(1) space. If this can be done you can simply test first and if there are no duplicates run the algorithms posted. So can you test for dupes in O(n) time O(1) space?

I have a codeigniter shopping cart going and its "cart" array is the following: Array ( [a87ff679a2f3e71d9181a67b7542122c] => Array ( [rowid] => a87ff679a2f3e71d9181a67b7542122c [id] => 4 [qty] => 1 [price] => 12.95 [name] => Maroon Choir Stole [image] => 2353463627maroon_3.jpg [custprod] => 0 [subtotal] => 12.95 ) [8f14e45fceea167a5a36dedd4bea2543] => Array ( [rowid] => 8f14e45fceea167a5a36dedd4bea2543 [id] => 7 [qty] => 1 [price] => 12.95 [name] => Shiny Red Choir Stole [image] => 2899638984red_vstole_1.jpg [custprod] => 0 [subtotal] => 12.95 ) [eccbc87e4b5ce2fe28308fd9f2a7baf3] => Array ( [rowid] => eccbc87e4b5ce2fe28308fd9f2a7baf3 [id] => 3 [qty] => 1 [price] => 14.95 [name] => Royal Blue Choir Stole [image] => 1270984005royal_vstole.jpg [custprod] => 1 [subtotal] => 14.95 ) ) My goal is to loop through this multidimensional array some how and if ANY product with the key value pair "custprod == 1" exists, then my checkout page will display one thing, and if no custom products are in the cart it displays another thing. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • I want to make a 2D color plot showing stress magnitude (S) at very loctaion (x, y) based on continuous color change using limited data sets

    - by Alex Liu
friends, I have to trouble you as I couldn't find a solution after trying for a long time. I have 3 columns of data. x, y, and the stress value (S) at every point (x, y). I want to generate a 2D color plot displaying continuous color change with the magnitude of the stress (S). The stress values increase from -3*10^4 Pa to 4*10^4 Pa. I only have hundreds of data sets for an area, but I want to see the stress magnitude (read from the color) at every location (x, y). What Matlab command should I use? Thank you very much! I want to make a 2D color plot showing stress magnitude (S) at very loctaion (x, y) based on continuous color change using limited

  • how to call array values based on the main id they linked to?

    - by veronica george
In page one, $add_id2=implode(',',$add_id); //result is 1,4 $item_type2=implode(',',$item_type_2); //result is 8,16 $final_total2=implode(',',$final); //result is 150,430 I pass these values via URL to the page two and store them in session. $_SESSION['cart'][$car]= array ('car'=>$car, 'loc_1'=>$location, array ( 'addon_id'=>$a_id, 'item_type'=>$item_type2, 'final_total'=>$final_t ) ); I call them like this, foreach($_SESSION['cart'] as $cart=>$things) { //display main array value like car id and location id echo $cart; foreach($things as $thing_1=>$thing_2) { foreach($thing_2['addon_id'] as $thi_2=>$thi_4) { //to display addons item for the car id //this is the id for each addon under the above car //echo $thi_2; //this is to echo addon id $thi_4; } } } The above loop works . the addon items array loops through inside main array which is car. If there were two addon items chosen then the addon array will loop twice. Now al I need to do is, How to make $item_type2 and $final_total2 display the value according to the addon id? PS: Same addon items can be chosen multiple times. They are identified uniquely by id(//echo $thi_2;). Thanks.

  • Given a 2d array sorted in increasing order from left to right and top to bottom, what is the best w

    - by Phukab
I was recently given this interview question and I'm curious what a good solution to it would be. Say I'm given a 2d array where all the numbers in the array are in increasing order from left to right and top to bottom. What is the best way to search and determine if a target number is in the array? Now, my first inclination is to utilize a binary search since my data is sorted. I can determine if a number is in a single row in O(log N) time. However, it is the 2 directions that throw me off. Another solution I could use, if I could be sure the matrix is n x n, is to start at the middle. If the middle value is less than my target, then I can be sure it is in the left square portion of the matrix from the middle. I then move diagnally and check again, reducing the size of the square that the target could potentially be in until I have honed in on the target number. Does anyone have any good ideas on solving this problem? Example array: Sorted left to right, top to bottom. 1 2 4 5 6 2 3 5 7 8 4 6 8 9 10 5 8 9 10 11

  • How can I place a ProgressBar in Android using Cocos 2d?

    - by Laxmipriya
    I want to place a horizontal progress bar in my Android application and I want to change its progress color. I used the following code, but the progress bar is not being displayed. CCProgressTimer progressBar = CCProgressTimer.progress("progressbar.png"); progressBar.setType(kCCProgressTimerTypeHorizontalBarLR); progressBar.setScale(5); progressBar.setAnchorPoint(CGPoint.ccp(0, 0)); progressBar.setPosition(CGPoint.ccp(0,0)); addChild(progressBar);

  • How can I generate a 2d navigation mesh in a dynamic environment at runtime?

    - by Stephen
So I've grasped how to use A* for path-finding, and I am able to use it on a grid. However, my game world is huge and I have many enemies moving toward the player, which is a moving target, so a grid system is too slow for path-finding. I need to simplify my node graph by using a navigational mesh. I grasp the concept of "how" a mesh works (finding a path through nodes on the vertices and/or the centers of the edges of polygons). My game uses dynamic obstacles that are procedurally generated at run-time. I can't quite wrap my head around how to take a plane that has multiple obstacles in it and programatically divide the walkable area up into polygons for the navigation mesh, like the following image. Where do I start? How do I know when a segment of walk-able area is already defined, or worse, when I realize I need to subdivide a previously defined walk-able area as the algorithm "walks" through the map? I'm using javascript in nodejs, if it matters.
