• Asp.net Web Site Administration Tool with SqlCeMembership

  I am developing an application in MVC 3. I installed this provider via Nuget . Basically, it allows to use any part of memberships, rules and profiles with a .sdf (compact) database. I need the "Web Site Administration Tool" use this provider. But I can not use it. Already checked the web.config and everything is ok. When I open the "Web Site Administration Tool" on the Security I click test (any provider) and the error happens. The following images. Error when clicking test "Could not establish a connection to the database. If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider." • ASP.Net/C# File Upload Progress Display

  I am having a hard time figuring out how to do a "Please wait while file is uploading" message when the user submits the following form. So far the application works to specification with regards to checking files and uploading to the server. You will see some java script below, this is there to allow me to fake out the style of the file up load buttons so that it matches the rest of the site. I have tried to use the ASP.Net Ajax controls to do this however the updateprogress panel would not show up. In further reading it was explained that this has something to do with the Asynchronous transfer that the file upload control uses when you issue a PostedFile.SaveAs("filename") command. I also found a site that refereed to using an iframe to do the job. I'm not really sure if that's the best way to go about doing this or not so I'm asking you the professionals of stackoverflow for help to try and resolve this issue. • Why have or haven't you moved to ASP.NET MVC yet?

  I find myself on the edge of trying out ASP.NET MVC but there is still "something" holding me back. Are you still waiting to try it, and if so, why? If you finally decided to use it, what helped you get over your hesitation? I'm not worried about it from a technical point of view; I know the pros and cons of web forms vs MVC. My concerns are more on the practical side. Will Microsoft continue to support ASP.NET MVC if they don't reach some critical threshold of developers/customers using it? Are customers willing to try ASP.NET MVC? Have you had to convince a customer to use it? How did that go? Are there major sites using ASP.NET MVC (besides SO)? Could you provide links if you have them? Did you try ASP.NET MVC and found yourself regretting it? If so, what do you regret? If you have any other concerns preventing you from using MVC.NET, what are they? If you had concerns but felt they were addressed and now use MVC.NET, could you list them as well? Thanks

• ADO program to list members of a large group.

  Hi everyone, I'm attempting to list all the members in a Active Directory group using ADO. The problem I have is that many of these groups have over 1500 members and ADSI cannot handle more than 1500 items in a multi-valued attribute. Fortunately I came across Richard Muller's wonderful VBScript that handles more than 1500 members at http://www.rlmueller.net/DocumentLargeGroup.htm I modified his code as shown below so that I can list ALL the groups and its memberships in a certain OU. However, I'm keeping getting the exception shown below: "ADODB.Recordset: Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal." My program appears to get stuck at: strPath = adoRecordset.Fields("ADsPath").Value Set objGroup = GetObject(strPath) All I am doing above is issuing the query to get back a recordset consisting of the ADsPath for each group in the OU. It then walks through the recordset and grabs the ADsPath for the first group and store its in a variable named strPath; we then use the value of that variable to bind to the group account for that group. • Ideas in implenting the following entry form in ASP.NET MVC 2

  Hi guys, I have a very simple data entry form to implement. It looks like this: Obviously I have mocked out the actual requirements but the essence is similar. Entering a name and clicking history should bring up a pop up pointing to the url '/student/viewhistory/{name}' Name and age are required fields The sub form (in the mockup) with Class (a drop down, containing the numbers 1 - 10) and Subject (containing A - D, say) form a unique pair of values for which a score is required. So, selecting the Class and Subject, entering a score and clicking on Add should 'add' this record for the student. Then the user should be able to click Save (to persist the entry to the database) or be able to add further (class, subject, score) pairs to the entry. Any ideas how to smartly implement this? (I am coming from a DWH field... so thinking in a stateless manner is slightly foreign to me.) Any help is appreciated. I would imagine a smart use of jQuery would give a easy solution. • ASP.NET MVC - hiding id in URL?

  I'm building a basic blog application just now, for viewing data I'm just using the default route, i.e. - routes.MapRoute ( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", new { controller = "Blog", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional } ); So that when you go to mysite.com/View/12 it displays the blog with id 12. I want to modify the URLs so that they look as follows: mysite.com/View/2010/06/01/this-is-the-title. I could have a URL mapping like - routes.MapRoute( "View", "View/{year}/{month}/{day}/{title}", new { controller = "Blog", action = "View" } ); But then I'm not passing the ID into the Controller action so I would have to search on the date and title which doesn't feel right. On the other hand, if I pass the ID in it will show up in the URL which isn't what I'm aiming for either. Is there any way to redirect to the URL I want in the controller action after passing only the ID in as a paramter, or to pass the ID into the a Map Route but hide it in the URL? • CoreData is saving model without the save: method being called

  I have a list of items with a plus button in the navigation bar that opens up a modal window containing a table of the models attributes, that displays a form when the table items are clicked (pretty standard form style). For some reason if I click the plus button to open the form to create a new model, then immediately click the done button, the person model is saved. The action linked to the done button does nothing but call on a delegate method notifying the personListViewController to close the window. The apple docs do state that the model is not saved after calling the insertNewObjectForEntityName: ... Simply creating a managed object does not cause it to be saved to a persistent store. The managed object context acts as a scratchpad. I am at a lost to why this is happening, but every time I click the done button I have a new blank item in the original tableView. • How different is WPF from ASP.NET [closed]

  I have been quickly moved over to a different project at work because the project needs more help. I was chosen because they are confident in my abilities and they thought I would be best fit for the next couple weeks to help finish the application out. I am a little nervous. I do tend to pick things up quickly. I was moved to a different project at the beginning of this year and now I know it like the back of my hand. Previously I was on another project. Both of these projects were an ASP.NET web application, which I believe is considered a winforms web application? The project I am moving to is a desktop WPF application. I have read that many people enjoy developing their applications with WPF. I just have never dealt/worked with WPF before. I like to consider myself pretty good at ASP.NET/C# and I do a solid job. We deal with a lot of data processing from the database and report generation. So I do get to experience C# more so than some web applications where the C# end of it is mostly just event driven and simple instructions. How different are the two? Will it be completely foreign to me? Or is it just a different way of looking at a problem and I can familiarize myself quickly? Thanks for the input.

• Help me select a "Simpler" target to create a new language: .NET, LLVM, Go, Own VM

  Lets define "Simple". This is my first language. I have no previous experience I will not dedicate +4 years to learn it properly. I'm a professional software [developer], but as an amateur in this area, I want instant gratification. If the idea shows a future, I could rewrite it. I don't want to do everything from scratch. In fact, if there exists a way to get GO (for example), change its syntax, add some sugar, give some extra functions and leave intact everything else, that would be perfect! From the example of coffescript/scala I think is better to build on top of some rich runtime like .NET/GO so I don't need to rewrite everything. HOWEVER, if is better other way, no problem for the first try! I want it in a week. I need it in a week so it will really take a month. Then it truly takes 3 months. But I don't want to put more that 3 months on this. I could reduce the scope of my language, but I hope the tools will help me a lot... I want to build a new language. Similar to python, but typed. I wonder what to build it on top of. I like the idea of building on top of GO. To get their sane (IMHO) OO paradigm (I plan to do the same, using interfaces, not inheritance), get goroutines and some other stuff. In my naive thinking I imagine that spit another language could help me to debug it more easily. However, look like everyone is building on top of something like .NET (don't like Java), LLVM or make it own VM. I read http://createyourproglang.com/ (great!) and the part of the VM look "easy" to me. So, what I need is the proper criteria and question I need to know in advance to have a fair shot at make this.

• ASP.NET website deployment [on hold]

  I am getting my hands wet with ASP and I have been following the tutorials. I deployed the site and in Azure and it worked great. Today I started actually designing the site. And when I published, it looks as if it doesn't read any of the files I just updated, added, and modified. It works on my localhost, but not in the Azure. I thought when you publish, everything goes up, including the new files. I don't have enough reputation to add a picture so, you'll forgive me. SO, basically, how do I get my entire site uploaded? • Designing generic render/graphics component in C++?

  I'm trying to learn more about Component Entity systems. So I decided to write a Tetris clone. I'm using the "style" of component-entity system where the Entity is just a bag of Components, the Components are just data, a Node is a set of Components needed to accomplish something, and a System is a set of methods that operates on a Node. All of my components inherit from a basic IComponent interface. I'm trying to figure out how to design the Render/Graphics/Drawable Components. Originally, I was going to use SFML, and everything was going to be good. However, as this is an experimental system, I got the idea of being able to change out the render library at will. I thought that since the Rendering would be fairly componentized, this should be doable. However, I'm having problems figuring out how I would design a common Interface for the different types of Render Components. Should I be using C++ Template types? It seems that having the RenderComponent somehow return it's own mesh/sprite/whatever to the RenderSystem would be the simplest, but would be difficult to generalize. However, letting the RenderComponent just hold on to data about what it would render would make it hard to re-use this component for different renderable objects (background, falling piece, field of already fallen blocks, etc). I realize this is fairly over-engineered for a regular Tetris clone, but I'm trying to learn about component entity systems and making interchangeable components. It's just that rendering seems to be the hardest to split out for me.

• ASP.NET design not SOLID

  SOLID principles are described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOLID_%28object-oriented_design%29 I am developing a large ASP.NET app. The previous developer created a few very large classes each with lots of different purposes. It is very difficult to maintain and extend. The classes are deployed to the web server along with the code behind files etc. I want to share a small amount of the app with another application. I am considering moving all of the classes of the ASP.NET web app to a DLL, so the small subset of functionality can be shared. I realise it would be better to only share the classes which contain code to be shared but because of the dependencies this is proving to be very difficult e.g. class A contains code that should be shared, however class A contains references to classes B, C, D, E, F, G etc, so class A cannot be shared on its own. I am planning to refactor the code in the future. As a temporary solution I am planning to convert all the classes into a single class library. Is this a bad idea and if so, is there an alternative? as I don't have time to refactor at the moment.

• Magento, NGINX, PHP-FPM, APC, MEMCACHED, 16gb Ram CentOS, Spiking PHP-FPM to 100% CPU

  I have been trying to resolve my issue of spiking cpu caused by php-fpm processes. I've reduced the php-fpm config settings to: pm = ondemand pm.max_children = 12 pm.start_servers = 2 pm.min_spare_servers = 2 pm.max_spare_servers = 10 pm.max_requests = 500 php_admin_value[memory_limit] = 128M Problem still exists. I'm running a Joomla main site (which is having no problems) and a Magento store in a sub-directory. My server is a Linux CentOS, running NGINX, APC, Memcached, Full Page Cache and php-fpm. My server has 8 cores and 16gb dedicated ram. My host has shut down my server several times the past week because my php-fpm processes are consuming the entire network. A lot of the individual php-fpm processes are getting over 50% cpu. I've hired several "professionals" and none of them was able to help me, so now broke and stumped, I'm turning to you guys for help. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. table_cache=4096 I just noticed that someone changed my innodb_buffer_pool_size to 512M. Shouldn't this be set to 80% of available ram? So I have 16gb ram so it should be set at 12G; however, I set it at 10G. What do you think? I made that change and restart everything. Php-fpm is still spiking cpu. • Using Twain Dot Net in XBAP (Deployed via ASP.NET)

  First Version: Is there a way to use Twain Dot Net in a XBAP (WPF in browser)? Second Version: I have a setup exe (installation) that puts TwainDotNet.dll and TwainDotNet.Wpf.dll on client machine and registers them in GAC (using gacutil.exe). I have also a XBAP page on my server (IIS). (The XBAP part of the project works fine locally and I am using those 2 twin libraries registered in GAC locally too. And on client machine I have registered my generated certification in Trusted Root and Publishers. I have tested my XBAP without Twin libs on the client machine(s) and it works fine; test XBAP edits a text file on client machine hard). Now; when I browse my XBAP on a client, I get : "Error getting information about the default source: Failure"; which I think happens in GetDefault of DataSource class. Is there any work around?   I am trying to use NAnt in order to compile and sign an assembly using the vbc compiler. I have a project set up and am able to successfully sign the assembly compiling with VS2010. When I try to sign it using the command line I get this error: vbc : error BC30140: Error creating assembly manifest: Error signing assembly -- The parameter is incorrect. What is the correct way to do this with vbc? --EDIT: I have found that MSBuild also does not like having the AssemblyKeyFile attribute as I have defined it in the AssemblyInfo.vb, it gives the same failure message. So the only way I can currently get this to build correctly is to set properties on the project to tell it which key file to use and to sign the assembly.

• Rewind request body stream

  I am re-implementing a request logger as Owin Middleware which logs the request url and body of all incoming requests. I am able to read the body, but if I do the body parameter in my controller is null. I'm guessing it's null because the stream position is at the end so there is nothing left to read when it tries to deserialize the body. I had a similar issue in a previous version of Web API but was able to set the Stream position back to 0. This particular stream throws a This stream does not support seek operations exception. In the most recent version of Web API 2.0 I could call Request.HttpContent.ReadAsStringAsync()inside my request logger, and the body would still arrive to the controller in tact.   Hi, I just need to have the a small CMS-like controller. • Using two versions of the same assembly (system.web.mvc) at the same time

  I'm using a content management system whose admin interface uses MVC 1.0. I would like to build the public parts of the site using MVC 2. If I just reference System.Web.Mvc version 2 in my project the admin mode doesn't work as the reference to System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage created by the views in the admin interface is ambiguous: The type 'System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage' is ambiguous: it could come from assembly 'C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_MSIL\System.Web.Mvc\2.0.0.0__31bf3856ad364e35\System.Web.Mvc.dll' or from assembly 'C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_MSIL\System.Web.Mvc\1.0.0.0__31bf3856ad364e35\System.Web.Mvc.dll'. Please specify the assembly explicitly in the type name. I could easily work around this by using binding redirects to specify that MVC 2 should always be used. Unfortunately the content management systems admin mode isn't compatible with MVC 2. I'm not exactly sure why, but I start getting a bunch of null reference exceptions in some of it's actions when I try it and the developers of the CMS have confirmed that it isn't compatible with MVC 2 (yet). The admin interface which is accessed through domain.com/admin is not physically located in webroot/admin but in the program files folder on the server and domain.com/admin is instead routed there using a virtual path provider. Therefor, putting a separate web.config file in the admin folder to specify a different version of System.Web.Mvc for that part of the site isn't an option as that won't fly when using shared hosting. Can anyone see any solution to this problem? Perhaps it's possible to specify that for some assemblies a different version of a referenced assembly should be used?

• Password Recovery without sending password via email

  So, I've been playing with asp:PasswordRecovery and discovered I really don't like it, for several reasons: 1) Alice's password can be reset even without having access to Alice's email. A security question for password resets mitigates this, but does not really satisfy me. 2) Alice's new password is sent back to her in cleartext. I would rather send her a special link to my page (e.g. a page like example.com/recovery.aspx?P=lfaj0831uefjc), which would let her change her password. I imagine I could do this myself by creating some sort of table of expiring password recovery pages and sending those pages to users who asked for a reset. Somehow those pages could also change user passwords behind the scenes (e.g. by resetting them manually and then using the text of the new password to change the password, since a password cannot be changed without knowing the old one). I'm sure others have had this problem before and that kind of solution strikes me as a little hacky. Is there a better way to do this? An ideal solution does not violate encapsulation by accessing the database directly but instead uses the existing stored procedures within the database...though that may not be possible.
