Thanks. FYI: Dell Latitude D630, Intel Centrino processor. Also, the updater is currently running what seems to be the update. I will report back when it is done going through its process to let you know if it is in fact the 13.10 update. Update 2: System went through an update, but it wasn't for the OS. I think it was an update for the error message mentioned above. Now the OS update is currently running the 'distribution upgrade' portion of the update. This is further than it had gone before. Again I will report back once this is done to let you know whether or not the update was successful. Final Update: Don't know for sure what happened, but I'm almost sure that the error mentioned above was resolved in the first update prior to the 13.10 update. All set.

• Ubuntu 14.04 : Lost my sound randomly tried a few commands and I think I failed

  I lost my sound the other day and I tried to delete pulseaudio then reinstall, then I tried to delete it and install alsa, It did not work and I had to reinstall everything; overall bad idea... now I can't have any sound. Should I do a fresh install? I don't know how to boot an usb drive with GRUB... • Streamed mp3 only plays for 1 second

  Hi, I'm using the plaympeg.c (modified) code of smpeg as a media player. I've got ffserver running as a streaming server. I'm a streaming an mp3 file over http. But when I run plaympeg.c, it plays the streamed file only for a second. When I run plaympeg again, it starts off from where it left and plays for 1 second. Does anyone know why this happens an how to fix it? I've tested it out on WMP and it plays the entire file in one go. • I'm a C Programmer, but I can't find a comfortable environment to work in

  Hello everyone, Last time I asked a question, I was having issues dealing with Java which I had to do for a course work. I generally use C for my development work - especially personal projects - and I've grown up in what is pretty much a Linux/UNIX world. In this world, it was easy to use C, you had your C compiler (GCC is excellent in that regard) and a wealth of tools such as the command line and vi/emacs/whatever-you-got. However, that was all that I really liked about Linux/UNIX. It really fitted well with the C language; nowadays, I'm somewhat forced into Windows/Mac OS X for most of my work. C seems poorly supported on a mac for starters, there's no GUI API to use and pretty much you get forced into Obj-C. This is not a problem, I like Objective-C, but it's another language I have to learn. Now coming to Windows. Why does everything about Windows Development try to scare me away? It's basically come down to: USE C# AND .NET OR DIE. I don't like C#, I like C, they are fundamentally different. Yet when I make a Windows Forms application in MSVC++ (I know that's not C), I get a main function riddled with weird things I've never heard of before, along with a poor, barely-compliant C/C++ compiler. What am I to do when I just want to program in C, make applications that look and feel like native Windows applications (I am a sucker for aesthetics, and I'm not looking to make something cross-platform. I just want it to work on Windows, and look as native as possible.). C++ is a fine alternative, but it really looks like the only way to make a decent, native feeling Windows application, is to use C#. Am I missing something here? I'd rather not use CYGWIN. Like I said, I want people to install the program, and it should just work out of the box on Windows 7. Program in question involves a Media Player, if anyone is curious what I'm targetting at. Anyone who had the same experiences who can help me out? How can I code something in ANSI C and still have a native feel?

• Why do old programming languages continue to be revised?

  This question is not, "Why do people still use old programming languages?" I understand that quite well. In fact the two programming languages I know best are C and Scheme, both of which date back to the 70s. Recently I was reading about the changes in C99 and C11 versus C89 (which seems to still be the most-used version of C in practice and the version I learned from K&R). Looking around, it seems like every programming language in heavy use gets a new specification at least once per decade or so. Even Fortran is still getting new revisions, despite the fact that most people using it are still using FORTRAN 77. Contrast this with the approach of, say, the typesetting system TeX. In 1989, with the release of TeX 3.0, Donald Knuth declared that TeX was feature-complete and future releases would contain only bug fixes. Even beyond this, he has stated that upon his death, "all remaining bugs will become features" and absolutely no further updates will be made. Others are free to fork TeX and have done so, but the resulting systems are renamed to indicate that they are different from the official TeX. This is not because Knuth thinks TeX is perfect, but because he understands the value of a stable, predictable system that will do the same thing in fifty years that it does now. Why do most programming language designers not follow the same principle? Of course, when a language is relatively new, it makes sense that it will go through a period of rapid change before settling down. And no one can really object to minor changes that don't do much more than codify existing pseudo-standards or correct unintended readings. But when a language still seems to need improvement after ten or twenty years, why not just fork it or start over, rather than try to change what is already in use? If some people really want to do object-oriented programming in Fortran, why not create "Objective Fortran" for that purpose, and leave Fortran itself alone? I suppose one could say that, regardless of future revisions, C89 is already a standard and nothing stops people from continuing to use it. This is sort of true, but connotations do have consequences. GCC will, in pedantic mode, warn about syntax that is either deprecated or has a subtly different meaning in C99, which means C89 programmers can't just totally ignore the new standard. So there must be some benefit in C99 that is sufficient to impose this overhead on everyone who uses the language. This is a real question, not an invitation to argue. Obviously I do have an opinion on this, but at the moment I'm just trying to understand why this isn't just how things are done already. I suppose the question is: What are the (real or perceived) advantages of updating a language standard, as opposed to creating a new language based on the old?

We have a binary data file which has following data structure: (It is a 12 byte structure): I need to find out Epoch time value(total time value is packed in 42 bits as described below): Field-1 : Byte 1, Byte 2, + 6 Bits from Byte 3 Time-1 : 2 Bits from Byte 3 + Byte 4 Time-2 : Byte 5, Byte 6, Byte 7, Byte 8 Field-2 : Byte 9, Byte 10, Byte 11, Byte 12 For Field-1 and Field-2 I do not have issue as they can be taken out easily. I need time value in Epoch Time (long) as it has been packed in Bytes 5,6,7,8 and 3 and 4 as follows: (the bit structure for the time value is as follows): Bytes 5 to 8 (32 bit word) Packs time value bits from 0 thru 31 (byte 5 has 0 to 7 bits, byte 6 has 8 to 15, byte 7 has 16 to 23, byte 8 has 24 to 31). the remaining 10 bits of time value are packed in Bytes 3 and byte 4 as follows: byte 3 has 2 bits:32 and 33, and Byte 4 has remaining bits : 34 to 41. So total bits for time value is 42 bits, packed as above. I need to compute epoch value coming out of these 42 bits. How do I do it?   I just upgraded Ubuntu from 11.10 to 12.04. My rails app now returns the (passenger) error "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (111) (Mysql2::Error)". I get a similar error when I try to access mysql at the command line on my Ubuntu server using mysql -u root -p. I have mysql-server 5.5 installed. I've checked and mysql is not running. When I try to restart it, it fails. Dean Richardson Update: Thanks to quanta's suggestion, I looked at the /var/log/mysql/error.log file. I found error messages relating to pointers, fatal signals, and more stuff that I really couldn't make much sense of. I also found mysql man page references, however. One suggested that I try starting mysqld with the --innodb_force_recovery=# option, then attempt to dump (or drop) the offending/corrupted database or table. I worked through the escalating option levels one-by-one (innodb_force_recovery=1, innodb_force_recovery=2, etc.) This allowed me to successfully run mysql -u root -p from the command line and execute several commands. I was able to run queries on my production database, but any attempt to query, dump, or even drop my development database raised an error and led to me losing the connection to mysql. So I've made progress, but until I'm somehow able to drop or repair my development db I'm still unable to get my app to load. Any further advice or suggestions? Thanks!   Can't seem to get mysql-python to work on Snow Leopard for the life of me. Currently using the default version of python that ships with Snow Leopard (python 2.6.1). Installed MySQL 5.1.45 x86_64.   Hey guys, I'm trying to install SVN on CentOS 5. Unfortunately a simple yum install isn't going to work (afaik) because I'm using the DirectAdmin control panel. For example: sren armcross It will change the session name to armcross (ARM gcc cross compiler) and output something like: screen session name changed from '25278.pts-15.linux-ic37' to 'armcross' So, the key question now is how to get current session name. Not only for display the old session name, but according to Is it possible to change GNU screen session name after created? , I have to know it(pass to -d -r) before I can change it to something else. Can we use $STY for current session name? No. $STY will not change after you have changed the session name to a user-defined one. However, for command screen -d -r <oldsessname> -X sessionname armcross should be the user-defined name(if ever defined) instead of $STY, otherwise, screen spouts error "No screen session found." Maybe, there is a verbose way, use screen -list to list all sessions(user-defined name listed), then, match the pid part from $STY against those listed sessions and we will find current session's user-defined name. It should not be so verbose for such a straightforward question. Don't you think so? The -d -D and -r -R options seems to expose too much implementation detail to screen's user.   I have noticed that when my computer in plugged in, the wireless strength increases. I'm assuming this is to do with power management. Is there a way to disable Wireless Power Management? I have found a few blog posts that show hacks to disable this but what is best practice here? Should there not be an option via the power menu that lets you toggle this?   I've tried ffserver with ffmpeg, I've tried VLC, and I'm not sure what else to try or what I've done wrong. Did find: .../libsvm-3.12/python/../libsvm.so.2: mach-o, but wrong architecture when I do "lipo -info libsvm.so.2", I get: Non-fat file: libsvm.so.2 is architecture: i386 So it looks like I'm running 64-bit python but libsvm ends up as a 32-bit program. Any way I can get it to compile as a 64-bit program?
