What are there the usability implications for a long list of items (f.e. facebook news stream) to use an internal scrolling (just the list panel) vs a full page scrolling.
As I am stumbling through Facebook App Dev. I am getting more and more close to a bit sophisticated questions, bu still I am at newbie level.
Can I have custom Tab and inside that tab two different apps ?
ex. (the slideshow and top 5 news(RSS feed))
What I must to learn to write php web-site grabber (parser)?

what i must to read for writing m3u player on php?

Using Javascript, Jquery preferably, I want to be able to trigger the visiblity of the div when a user is at a certain page height. NYtimes has an example of this when you scroll to the bottom of a story, a slider pops out with another news story, and goes away if you scroll up.
Read some texts about locking in PHP.
They all, mainly, direct to http://php.net/manual/en/function.flock.php .
This page talks about opening a file on the hard-disk!!
Is it really so? I mean, this makes locking really expensive - it means each time I want to lock I'll have to access the hard-disk )=
Can anymore comfort me with a delightful news?
Hi, I am building a site which will require some very limited content management for a client. There are only a few areas of the site which will require the client to be able to update the content themselves.
Would it be better to create a very simple custom admin page for the client to log in and say add a news story etc or would it be best using a fully fledged CMS like Drupal etc which seems overkill to me.
Hi all,
I'm looking for the easiest and most user-friendly way to manage pictures and avatars in a web 2.0 application.
For example to add an avatar to an news item or article.
Thanks!
According to this discussion of Google App Engine on Hacker News,
A DB (read) request takes over 100ms on the
datastore. That's insane and unusable
for about 90% of applications.
How do you determine what is an acceptable response time for a DB read request?
I have been using App Engine without noticing any issues with DB responsiveness. But, on the other hand, I'm not sure I would even know what to look for in that regard :)
Hello!
Where can I find centralized and complete documentation aboput Linux - specific API?
I'm preparing Linux port of my application and i want to use as much Linux - specific features as it's possible. So far I found that Linux provide epoll and inotify API, which are great news for me, because my program works as network server and monitor local file systems.
Hi Everyone,
I'm having a problem with this page http://www.gwynfryncottages.com/news.php
The .blog-footer div needs to clear on the right to correct for the height of the pictures introducing clear:right; causes the huge gap to appear on the page in FF and IE.
I'm at a loss, I've tried numerous ideas to get around the problem and at this point i've been staring at it too long to see the problem clearly. Can anyone help me out.
Thanks in advance.
I have created an application that looks like a news ticker. It suppose to run on a machine which has PPT slide show running on it always. I have set
this.TopMost = true
So the ticker application overlaps the PPT. But I want that the ticker application as well as the ppt are seen together. This is possible only if I can cascade the applications.
Can someone please help?
Hi,
After I read Bloch's discussion http://www.infoq.com/news/2010/04/bloch_java_future
I started to think about "Do I have to switch to scala for new web developements" or is java preferred in all cases. What is your opinion ?
Thanks,
You often see that a new game will be released on Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows PC.
How do gaming companies do this? Is it a common source code compiled using different compilers? Are actual different source codes required?
example news article announcing this:

Hi Guys,
I'd like to use the built in directory security features built into the web.config to restrict access to child pages of a parent page. My structure is as follows:
Members
Members/News
Members/Press
Members/Movies
Users should be able to have access to the members parent page, but not child pages. My problem is, because I am using extensionless URLs, the web.config thinks this is a directory and so access is blocked. Is there a way to say only restrict access for sub pages?
Hi to all and PLS HELP
I have next menu: http://health-fitness-news.info/menu/. The links from the list have PNG background images. All browsers work fine except IE6.
I found a script which resolves this problem in IE6 but doesn't work at mouse HOVER. When the mouse is over the link the bg image doesn't have transparency.
What should I do do fix that?
Three of my coworkers just told me that there's no reason to use a StringBuilder in place of concatenation using the + operator. In other words, this is fine to do with a bunch of strings: myString1 + myString2 + myString3 + myString4 + mySt...
The rationale that they used was that since .NET 2, the C# compiler will build the same IL if you use the + operator as if you used a StringBuilder.
This is news to me. Are they correct?
Hi folks,
On my team at work, we use the IBM MQ technology a lot for cross-application communication. I've seen lately on Hacker News and other places about other MQ technologies like RabbitMQ. I have a basic understanding of what it is (a commonly checked area to put and get messages), but what I want to know what exactly is it good at? How will I know where I want to use it and when? Why not just stick with more rudimentary forms of interprocess messaging?
My website doesn't have frequent content updates. How to add relevant, fresh content (via Google news, etc. ) into my website so that search engines index it often.

Hello,

For the brave: http://www.alphamalemedia.com/index/news
Ive tried setting the meta content from utf8 to iso-8859-1.
Ive switched tables over to utf8 from latin1_swedish_ci but no luck.
Hello all ,
URL u=new URL("telnet://route-server.exodus.net");
This line is generating :
java.net.MalformedURLException: unknown protocol: telnet
And i encounter similar problems with other URLs that begin with "news://"
These are URLs extracted from ODP , so i dont understand why such exceptions arise..
I'm looking to integrate a bunch of RSS/ATOM sources into a feed for our intranet. This is outside my usual realm of work so I've had very limited exposure to this.
I'd like to integrate all the feeds into a single reader such that all the news items are in chronological release order.
Is this doable? Do I need a special component? Or can I make the ASP.NET integrated components do all this simply enough?
I'm wondering if there is any news about a "Android Dev Phone 3"? Is an updated hardware of the "Android Dev Phone 2" that is coming soon? (probably an unlocked version of the Nexus One)
I followed the tutorial
http://www.neoos.ch/news/46-development/54-uikeyboardtypenumberpad-and-the-missing-return-key
to dismiss the number pad,
this tutorial add the button as sub view to the number pad,
my problem is, in the same view i am using the text field to enter text also,so, how to differentiate the number field, and text field. so that i can hide the button view accordingly.
thanks in advance.
Where can I find sample *X*HTML 5 pages? I mainly want to know if it is possible to mix and match XHTML 5 with other XML languages just like XHTML 1 or not. For example is something like this valid in XHTML 5?
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "WHAT SHOULD BE HERE?"
"WHAT SHOULD BE HERE?">
<html xmlns="WHAT SHOULD BE HERE?"
xmlns:ui="http://java.sun.com/jsf/facelets">
<head>
<title><ui:insert name="title">Default title</ui:insert></title>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="./css/main.css"/>
</head>
<body>
<div id="header">
<ui:insert name="header">
<ui:include src="header.xhtml"/>
</ui:insert>
</div>
<div id="left">
<ui:insert name="navigation" >
<ui:include src="navigation.xhtml"/>
</ui:insert>
</div>
<div id="center">
<br />
<span class="titleText"> <ui:insert name="title" /> </span>
<hr />
<ui:insert name="content">
<div>
<ui:include src="content.xhtml"/>
</div>
</ui:insert>
</div>
<div id="right">
<ui:insert name="news">
<ui:include src="news.xhtml"/>
</ui:insert>
</div>
<div id="footer">
<ui:insert name="footer">
<ui:include src="footer.xhtml"/>
</ui:insert>
</div>
</body>
</html>
Thanks in advance.
