  • Need a free SMTP service

    - by Axsuul
    My ISP SMTP server is so slow and is picky on what type of e-mails it allows. I need a new SMTP service and it needs to be free. I run a linux server but don't have the time to set up Postfix right now. Also, I don't want to use Gmail's SMTP server because it puts your gmail e-mail address as the sender. Thanks!

  • forced reformat without login / and bootcamp

    - by debug
    ok.. im pretty good with stuff like this, but I have a question. I have mac mini with 10.5.(x) on one partition, and bootcamp (windows) on the other. My boss wants me to reformat the whole mac (10.6 (x)), which is usually easy. He does not remember his password to login, which means I cannot log in and allocate the bootcamp back to one partition using Disk Utility, then reformat the whole drive. When I insert the Snow leopard CD, I can only wipe out one partition, my question is: Is there a way to force a wipe out of both drives in the boot sequence? Any help to wipe out this whole drive and do a clean install would be helpful.. Thanks superusers!

  • Why isn't this rewrite rule (nginx) applied? (trying to setup Wordpress multisite)

    - by Brian Park
    Hi, I'm trying to setup Wordpress multisite (subfolder structure) with nginx, but having a problem with this rewrite rule. Below is the Apache's .htaccess, which I have to translate into nginx configuration. RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /blogs/ RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L] # uploaded files RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?files/(.+) wp-includes/ms-files.php?file=$2 [L] # add a trailing slash to /wp-admin RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?wp-admin$ $1wp-admin/ [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d RewriteRule ^ - [L] RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?(wp-(content|admin|includes).*) $2 [L] RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?(.*\.php)$ $2 [L] RewriteRule . index.php [L] Below is what I came up with: server { listen 80; server_name example.com; server_name_in_redirect off; expires 1d; access_log /srv/www/example.com/logs/access.log; error_log /srv/www/example.com/logs/error.log; root /srv/www/example.com/public; index index.html; try_files $uri $uri/ /index.html; # rewriting uploaded files rewrite ^/blogs/(.+/)?files/(.+) /blogs/wp-includes/ms-files.php?file=$2 last; # add a trailing slash to /wp-admin rewrite ^/blogs/(.+/)?wp-admin$ /blogs/$1wp-admin/ permanent; if (!-e $request_filename) { rewrite ^/blogs/(.+/)?(wp-(content|admin|includes).*) /blogs/$2 last; rewrite ^/blogs/(.+/)?(.*\.php)$ /blogs/$2 last; } location /blogs/ { index index.php; #try_files $uri $uri/ /blogs/index.php?q=$uri&$args; } location ~ \.php$ { include /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params; fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /srv/www/example.com/public$fastcgi_script_name; } # static assets location ~* ^.+\.(manifest)$ { access_log /srv/www/example.com/logs/static.log; } location ~* ^.+\.(ico|ogg|ogv|svg|svgz|eot|otf|woff|mp4|ttf|css|rss|atom|js|jpg|jpeg|gif|png|ico|zip|tgz|gz|rar|bz2|doc|xls|exe|ppt|tar|mid|midi|wav|bmp|rtf)$ { # only set expires max IFF the file is a static file and exists if (-f $request_filename) { expires max; access_log /srv/www/example.com/logs/static.log; } } } In the above code, I believe rewrite ^/blogs/(.+/)?(.*\.php)$ /blogs/$2 last; has no effect because when I look at the access_log file, I see the following line: 2010/09/15 01:14:55 [error] 10166#0: *8 "/srv/www/example.com/public/blogs/test/index.php" is not found (2: No such file or directory), request: "GET /blogs/test/ HTTP/1.1" (Here, 'test' is the second blog created using multisite feature) What I'm expecting is that /blogs/test/index.php gets rewritten to /blogs/index.php, but it doesn't seem to do that... Am I overlooking something obvious? Thanks!

  • Force Direct3D anti-aliasing in a Direct3D game?

    - by James McLaughlin
    Some old games look really jagged nowadays on large displays without any anti-aliasing, but don't have any option built-in to the game to enable it. On a PC with an NVIDIA graphics card, it's possible to force anti-aliasing in the NVIDIA control panel which can really improve this. But I'm playing the game in Parallels on a Mac, and although the Mac has an NVIDIA graphics card, it's Parallels' emulated card that Windows sees and so obviously there's no NVIDIA control panel. Is there some generic way I can force anti-aliasing for a Direct3D game without using the NVIDIA control panel?

  • Help debugging Sendmail/Mailman configuration issue

    - by inxilpro
    Hi folks, I'm trying to configure a server with Sendmail and Mailman. I've been getting "Broken pipe" errors for a while, and have slowly been debugging. I fixed some permission issues, and changed the user that Mailman expects to be called from, among other things. Finally, I'd gone through everything I could think of, so I added a new test to see if it's the Mailman script or Sendmail that's causing the problem. Here's the error I'm getting now (stripped of timestamps and identifying information): <-- MAIL FROM:[email protected] Authentication-Warning: xxxxx.org: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.net [xx.xx.xxx.xxx] didn't use HELO protocol --- 250 2.1.0 [email protected]... But I can't for the life of me figure out what else to check. Normal aliases work fine. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Can I create an SSH user which can access only certain directory?

    - by RiMMER
    I have a Virtual Private Server which I can connect to using SSH with my root account, being able to execute any linux command and access all the disk area, obviously. I would like to create another user account, which would be able to access this server using SSH too, but only to a certain directory, for example /var/www/example.com/ For example, imagine this user has a HUGE error.log file (500 MB) located in /var/www/example.com/logs/error.log When accessing this file using FTP, this user needs to download 500 MB to view the last lines of the log, but I'd like him to be able to execute something like this: tail error.log Therefore I need him to be able to access the server using SSH, but I don't want to grant him access to all server areas. How can I do this?

  • Suspicious process running under user named

    - by Amit
    I get a lot of emails reporting this and I want this issue to auto correct itself. These process are run by my server and are a result of updates, session deletion and other legitimate session handling reported as false positives. Here's a sample report: Time: Sat Oct 20 00:00:03 2012 -0400 PID: 20077 Account: named Uptime: 326117 seconds Executable: /usr/sbin/nsd\00507d27e9\0053\00\00\00\00\00 (deleted) The file system shows this process is running an executable file that has been deleted. This typically happens when the original file has been replaced by a new file when the application is updated. To prevent this being reported again, restart the process that runs this excecutable file. See csf.conf and the PT_DELETED text for more information about the security implications of processes running deleted executable files. Command Line (often faked in exploits): /usr/sbin/nsd -c /etc/nsd/nsd.conf Network connections by the process (if any): udp: xx.xx.xxx.xx:53 -> 0.0.0.0:0 udp: 127.0.0.1:53 -> 0.0.0.0:0 udp: xx.xx.xxx.xx:53 -> 0.0.0.0:0 tcp: xx.xx.xxx.xx:53 -> 0.0.0.0:0 tcp: 127.0.0.1:53 -> 0.0.0.0:0 tcp: xx.xx.xxx.xx:53 -> 0.0.0.0:0 Files open by the process (if any): /dev/null /dev/null /dev/null Memory maps by the process (if any): 0045e000-00479000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 2582025 /lib/ld-2.5.so 00479000-0047a000 r--p 0001a000 fd:00 2582025 /lib/ld-2.5.so 0047a000-0047b000 rw-p 0001b000 fd:00 2582025 /lib/ld-2.5.so 0047d000-005d5000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 2582073 /lib/i686/nosegneg/libc-2.5.so 005d5000-005d7000 r--p 00157000 fd:00 2582073 /lib/i686/nosegneg/libc-2.5.so 005d7000-005d8000 rw-p 00159000 fd:00 2582073 /lib/i686/nosegneg/libc-2.5.so 005d8000-005db000 rw-p 005d8000 00:00 0 005dd000-005e0000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 2582087 /lib/libdl-2.5.so 005e0000-005e1000 r--p 00002000 fd:00 2582087 /lib/libdl-2.5.so 005e1000-005e2000 rw-p 00003000 fd:00 2582087 /lib/libdl-2.5.so 0062b000-0063d000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 2582079 /lib/libz.so.1.2.3 0063d000-0063e000 rw-p 00011000 fd:00 2582079 /lib/libz.so.1.2.3 00855000-0085f000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 2582022 /lib/libnss_files-2.5.so 0085f000-00860000 r--p 00009000 fd:00 2582022 /lib/libnss_files-2.5.so 00860000-00861000 rw-p 0000a000 fd:00 2582022 /lib/libnss_files-2.5.so 00ac0000-00bea000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 2582166 /lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8e 00bea000-00bfe000 rw-p 00129000 fd:00 2582166 /lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8e 00bfe000-00c01000 rw-p 00bfe000 00:00 0 00e68000-00e69000 r-xp 00e68000 00:00 0 [vdso] 08048000-08074000 r-xp 00000000 fd:00 927261 /usr/sbin/nsd 08074000-08079000 rw-p 0002b000 fd:00 927261 /usr/sbin/nsd 08079000-0808c000 rw-p 08079000 00:00 0 08a20000-08a67000 rw-p 08a20000 00:00 0 b7f8d000-b7ff2000 rw-p b7f8d000 00:00 0 b7ffd000-b7ffe000 rw-p b7ffd000 00:00 0 bfa6d000-bfa91000 rw-p bffda000 00:00 0 [stack] Would /etc/nsd/restart or kill -1 20077 solve the problem?

  • hosting 2 webapps under 1 apache/tomcat

    - by mkoryak
    I am trying to host multiple webapps under tomcat 6 behind apache2 via mod_jk. I am at my wits end with this. the problem i am facing that both domains seems to point to a single tomcat 'domain'. my server.xml looks like this: <Service name="Catalina"> <Connector port="8080" protocol="HTTP/1.1" connectionTimeout="20000" URIEncoding="UTF-8" redirectPort="8443" /> <Connector port="8009" protocol="AJP/1.3" redirectPort="8443" /> <Connector port="8010" protocol="AJP/1.3" redirectPort="8443" /> <Engine name="Catalina" defaultHost="dogself.com"> <Realm className="org.apache.catalina.realm.UserDatabaseRealm" resourceName="UserDatabase"/> <Host name="dogself.com" appBase="webapps-dogself" unpackWARs="true" autoDeploy="true" xmlValidation="false" xmlNamespaceAware="false"> </Host> <Host name="natashacarter.com" appBase="webapps-natashacarter.com" unpackWARs="true" autoDeploy="true" xmlValidation="false" xmlNamespaceAware="false"> </Host> </Engine> </Service> my workers.properties looks like this: worker.list=dogself,natashacarter worker.dogself.port=8009 worker.dogself.host=dogself.com worker.dogself.type=ajp13 worker.natashacarter.port=8010 worker.natashacarter.host=natashacarter.com worker.natashacarter.type=ajp13 finally my apache vhosts look like this: <VirtualHost 69.164.218.75:80> ServerName dogself.com DocumentRoot /srv/www/dogself.com/public_html/ ErrorLog /srv/www/dogself.com/logs/error.log CustomLog /srv/www/dogself.com/logs/access.log combined JkMount /* dogself </VirtualHost> and <VirtualHost 69.164.218.75:80> ServerName natashacarter.com DocumentRoot /srv/www/dogself.com/public_html/ ErrorLog /srv/www/dogself.com/logs/error.log CustomLog /srv/www/dogself.com/logs/access.log combined JkMount /* natashacarter </VirtualHost> when i log into manager webapp on both dogself.com and natashacarter.com, i can deploy to a context path on dogself, and that same contextpath will appear on natashacarter - so i know for a fact that this is the same tomcat domain. edit: just found this in my mod_jk log [Sun Feb 20 21:15:43 2011] [28546:3075521168] [warn] map_uri_to_worker_ext::jk_uri_worker_map.c (962): Uri * is invalid.   • Dell U271 monitor DisplayPort suddenly not working

    - by Amir Latif
    My new(ish) Dell U271 took a bit of a knock and it now suddenly doesn't recognise the Macbook plugged into it via DisplayPort - this had been working great for several months up until now. When I "Scan Sources", it doesn't find anything on DisplayPort. However, one suspicious behaviour leads me to think all might not be lost. When the Mac is woken from sleep, this used to kick the monitor in (as an monitor would) and while it no longer does that, the light on the monitor does go from standby orange to blue briefly, then the monitor says it's going into "power save" mode. It seems like it gets some kinda signal. Any ideas on how I can diagnose the problem? I'm trying to find another mac but no one near me has one ...

  • "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly" when trying to install MySQL on Win7 x64.

    - by Gravitas
    Hi, I've run into a brick wall trying to install MySQL v5.5 on my machine. My PC is Windows 7 x64, Enterprise edition. MySQL installs fine, but when I run the "MySQL Instance Configuration Wizard", it pauses forever on the step "Start Service" (I can let it run for 30 minutes with no response). If I go into services, I see that the "MySQL" service hasn't started, and if I try to start it, it says "Windows could not start MySQL Service on Local Computer. Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly." I've tried the following: Turning off firewall. Uninstalling all antivirus software. Installing / reinstalling 32-bit version of MySQL. Installing / reinstalling 64-bit version of MySQL. Uninstalling, deleting the contents of "C:\program files\MySQL" and "C:\program files (x86)\MySQL", reinstalling. Checking to see that there is no rogue services named MySQL???? (from a previous install). Checking that port 3306 is not used by an alternate program. Changing the default port that MySQL uses. Checking for "my.ini" and "my.ini.cnf" in "C:\windows" (nothing there but that can cause a problem). Running both MySQL installer, and configuration wizard, in "Adminstrator mode". Turning off UAC. Installing with defaults, not changing anything. Rebooting my machine (about 6 reboots so far). Opening up port 3306 in the firewall (both TCP and UDP, inbound and outbound). Swearing at the klutz of a programmer who designed MySQL so you can't even install it (as if that would help!) My machine is working 100% in every other way. InfiniDB (a MySQL compatible database) installs 100%, as does Visual Studio 2010, Microsoft SQL Server, etc, etc. Your advice on how to work around this? p.s. Here is the screen it got stuck on for 15 minutes until I killed the process: Update 2010-12-20 Tried MySQL v5.1, it didn't work either. Its amazing - if you type "mysqld /?", or "mysqld -help", it doesn't give you any help. And, if you try to restart the service manually, it doesn't display any error messages. Could it be any more unhelpful? Update 2010-12-21 Installed MySQL 6.0 alpha, and it worked. However, I'd rather not use an alpha release, given that the "stable" release is anything but :( Update 2010-12-21 Found http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/windows-troubleshooting.html, dealing with troubleshooting under Windows. Discovered that you can generate an error log if the service doesn't start - see here: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/error-log.html

  • Email arrived in SPAM no matter I do SPF, DKIM, and others stuffs

    During a full day I tried to removed my email from SPAM (in google). So I start from scratch by instaling Postfix on debian, setup SPF and DKIM. Email stay in spam but header are here. • Windows 7 Not Booting After Moving Partition

    - by Guillermo Phillips
    I have a Sony Vaio laptop. After using GParted to move the primary Windows partion, the laptop no longer boots, saying 'Operating system not found'. I don't have a recovery disc and the only other machine I have access to is a Mac Mini. I have tried creating a bootable USB using the recovery ISO from Microsoft. I can see all the files on the USB stick from my Mac. I followed the instructions here: http://borgstrom.ca/2010/10/14/os-x-bootable-usb.html I have set the laptop BIOS boot order to be 'External' first, but the laptop refuses to boot from the USB stick. I have previously been able to boot from a linux installation on the USB stick. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

  • What is the current state of Ubuntu's transition from init scripts to Upstart? [migrated]

    - by Adam Eberlin
    What is the current state of Ubuntu's transition from init.d scripts to upstart? I was curious, so I compared the contents of /etc/init.d/ to /etc/init/ on one of our development machines, which is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Server. # /etc/init.d/ # /etc/init/ acpid acpid.conf apache2 --------------------------- apparmor --------------------------- apport apport.conf atd atd.conf bind9 --------------------------- bootlogd --------------------------- cgroup-lite cgroup-lite.conf --------------------------- console.conf console-setup console-setup.conf --------------------------- container-detect.conf --------------------------- control-alt-delete.conf cron cron.conf dbus dbus.conf dmesg dmesg.conf dns-clean --------------------------- friendly-recovery --------------------------- --------------------------- failsafe.conf --------------------------- flush-early-job-log.conf --------------------------- friendly-recovery.conf grub-common --------------------------- halt --------------------------- hostname hostname.conf hwclock hwclock.conf hwclock-save hwclock-save.conf irqbalance irqbalance.conf killprocs --------------------------- lxc lxc.conf lxc-net lxc-net.conf module-init-tools module-init-tools.conf --------------------------- mountall.conf --------------------------- mountall-net.conf --------------------------- mountall-reboot.conf --------------------------- mountall-shell.conf --------------------------- mounted-debugfs.conf --------------------------- mounted-dev.conf --------------------------- mounted-proc.conf --------------------------- mounted-run.conf --------------------------- mounted-tmp.conf --------------------------- mounted-var.conf networking networking.conf network-interface network-interface.conf network-interface-container network-interface-container.conf network-interface-security network-interface-security.conf newrelic-sysmond --------------------------- ondemand --------------------------- plymouth plymouth.conf plymouth-log plymouth-log.conf plymouth-splash plymouth-splash.conf plymouth-stop plymouth-stop.conf plymouth-upstart-bridge plymouth-upstart-bridge.conf postgresql --------------------------- pppd-dns --------------------------- procps procps.conf rc rc.conf rc.local --------------------------- rcS rcS.conf --------------------------- rc-sysinit.conf reboot --------------------------- resolvconf resolvconf.conf rsync --------------------------- rsyslog rsyslog.conf screen-cleanup screen-cleanup.conf sendsigs --------------------------- setvtrgb setvtrgb.conf --------------------------- shutdown.conf single --------------------------- skeleton --------------------------- ssh ssh.conf stop-bootlogd --------------------------- stop-bootlogd-single --------------------------- sudo --------------------------- --------------------------- tty1.conf --------------------------- tty2.conf --------------------------- tty3.conf --------------------------- tty4.conf --------------------------- tty5.conf --------------------------- tty6.conf udev udev.conf udev-fallback-graphics udev-fallback-graphics.conf udev-finish udev-finish.conf udevmonitor udevmonitor.conf udevtrigger udevtrigger.conf ufw ufw.conf umountfs --------------------------- umountnfs.sh --------------------------- umountroot --------------------------- --------------------------- upstart-socket-bridge.conf --------------------------- upstart-udev-bridge.conf urandom --------------------------- --------------------------- ureadahead.conf --------------------------- ureadahead-other.conf --------------------------- wait-for-state.conf whoopsie whoopsie.conf To be honest, I'm not entirely sure if I'm interpreting the division of responsibilities properly, as I didn't expect to see any overlap (of what framework handles which services). So I was quite surprised to learn that there was a significant amount of overlap in service references, in addition to being unable to discern which of the two was intended to be the primary service framework. Why does there seem to be a fair amount of redundancy in individual service handling between init.d and upstart? Is something else at play here that I'm missing? What is preventing upstart from completely taking over for init.d? Is there some functionality that certain daemons require which upstart does not yet have, which are preventing some services from converting? Or is it something else entirely?

  • Wireless traffic stops when downloading large files at high speed: packets lost (Linksys WRT120N router)

    - by Torious
    The problem Note: First I'd like to understand WHY this is happening. Ofcourse, a solution would be nice too. :) When downloading a large file over HTTP at high-speeds, my wireless traffic basically stops: I can't open webpages and the download itself pauses. It pauses pretty much immediately after starting it; sometimes at 800 KB, sometimes at a few MB. After some time, the download (and other traffic) resumes, but the problem keeps reoccurring during the same download. The problem does not occur when using a wired connection through the same router (Linskys WRT120N). Also note that the connection is not dropped when this happens. It's just that the traffic stops and I can't browse to web pages, etc. (SYN packets are sent but nothing is received, etc.) Inspection with Wireshark shows that the following happens: Server sends data packets which are acknowledged by client Server sends a packet, but SEQ indicates some packets were lost (6 packets in one occurrence). Server sends a few more packets and client acknowledges these using "selective acknowledgement" Server stops sending data for a while (since the lost packets were not acknowledged or the router stops forwarding them?) Eventually, server does a "retransmission" and traffic resumes as normal. This all seems normal behavior to me when packet loss occurs. It's the consistent packet loss throughout a large, high-speed download that puzzles me. What might cause this? My own idea is the following: My internet is pretty fast (100 mbps), so when starting a large-file download, the router buffers the incoming data (since wireless introduces some slight delay / lower speed, in part due to other networks), but the buffer overflows and the router drops packets to regulate traffic (and because it has no choice). But how could that happen? Doesn't the TCP window size limit the amount of data that can go unacknowledged? So how can the router's buffer overflow if there can only be like 64 KB waiting to be acknowledged? Note: I've disabled TCP window scaling and dynamic window size through netsh options, in an attempt to fix this, but it doesn't seem to matter. Also, Wireshark shows a pattern of the server sending 2 packets (of 1514 bytes) and the client sending an ACK, so does that rule out a possible buffer overflow? And a few more subsequent packets are received... I'm at a loss here. Thanks for any insights. Things that are (probably) NOT the cause / I have experimented with The browser Various TCP options in Windows 7 (netsh etc.) Router settings such as MTU, beacon interval, UPnP, ...

  • Is it safe to enable forced ASLR via EMET on Windows?

    - by D.W.
    I'd like to enable forced ASLR for all DLLs on Windows. Is this safe? Background: ASLR is an important security mechanism that helps defend against code injection attacks. DLLs can opt into ASLR, and most do, but some DLLs have not opted into ASLR. If a program loads even a single non-ASLRized DLL, then the program doesn't get the benefit/protection of ASLR. This is a problem, because there are a non-trivial number of DLLs that haven't opted into ASLR. For instance, it was recently revealed that Dropbox injects a DLL into a bunch of processes, and the Dropbox DLL doesn't have ASLR turned on, which negates any ASLR protection they otherwise would have had. Unfortunately, there are many other widely used DLLs that haven't opted into ASLR. This is bad for system security. Microsoft provides several ways to turn on ASLR for all DLLs, even ones that haven't opted into ASLR: On Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, you can enable "Force ASLR" in the registry. On all Windows versions, you can use Microsoft's EMET tool and enable EMET's "Mandatory ASLR" option. These methods are possible because all DLLs are compiled as position-independent code and they can be relocated to a random location even if they haven't opted into ASLR. These options will ensure that ASLR is turned on, even if the developers of the DLL forgot to opt into ASLR. Thus, forcing on ASLR systemwide may help system security. In principle, turning on forced ASLR could potentially break a poorly-written DLL, so there is some risk of breakage. I'm interested in finding out just significant this risk is. I have the suspicion that this kind of breakage might be extremely rare. Here's what I've been able to find: Microsoft has done compatibility testing with several dozen widely used applications. The only one they found where Mandatory ASLR causes problems is Windows Media Player. All the other applications continue working fine. (See pp.39-41 of this document.) I've seen some anecdotal reports that enabling "Mandatory ASLR"/"Force ASLR" is fine and unlikely to cause problems. CERT reports that AMD and ATI video drivers used to crash if you enabled forced ASLR, but their latest drivers have now fixed this problem. They don't show any other drivers with this problem. A forum post from Microsoft shows no other applications with compatibility problems if ASLR is forced on, as of 2011. A user reports that borderlands.exe, a video game by Gearbox Software, crashes if you turn on mandatory ASLR. What else should I know? Is it relatively safe to turn on Force ASLR / Mandatory ASLR systemwide to harden the secuity of my system, or will I be in for a world of pain and broken applications? How significant is the risk of compatibility problems and broken applications?

  • How can I format a USB drive as FAT from a MacBook Pro?

    - by Edward Tanguay
    I plugged in a 250GB USB hard drive into my MacBook Pro and want to format it in FAT so I can transfer files back and forth between a windows machine. (My windows7 machine only formats in exFAT which my Snow Leopard 2.6.4 doesn't support until I do the update). So I want to format it on the mac. but when I right click on the drive, it gives me the options to eject, copy, but not to format. I can go into Disk Utilities, click on Partition, but the only option is the "Mac Journaled format". How can I Format my USB drive as FAT from my MacBook Pro?

  • VPN Connected, How to browse files? Windows Vista

    - by Wbdvlpr
    I am trying to establish a VPN connection to a server in my office from my laptop at home. I tried some of the steps as mentioned here: Connect to a network Connect to a workplace Use my Internet Connection (VPN) Then type server IP address and then my username & password. After creating a VPN connection, I can see I am connected to it. Now I want to browse files on the server. But I have no clue where I should look for them. I was thinking more of a simple step, like, Windows Run > Type ip address > \\124.345.678.900, then a prompt asking username and password, and finally a window opens to view the files. I tried to google it, but still unable to view files. Please help. Update: I didn't mention that when I try to connect to server via \\124.345.678.900 I get 0x80070043 error message.

  • Virtual Machine Performance - More RAM or More Processor?

    - by webworm
    When looking to improve Virtual Machine performance what would be better ... Increasing the available RAM or increasing the processor power? Here is my choice ... Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz with 8 GB RAM and integrated graphics (Mac Book Pro 13") Core i7 @ 2.6 GHz with 4 GB RAM and 512 MB dedicated graphics (Mac Book Pro 15") I plan to run Windows x64 in the VM with SQL Server 2008, Visual Studio 2010, and SharePoint 2010. I am planning to run VMWare Fusion v3. I also didn't know if a dedicated graphics card makes a difference when using a Virtual Machine. Thank you.

  • Ubuntu 12.04 crash analysis - strange binary data on all open files at the moment of crash

    - by lanbo
    A couple of hours ago we got a system crash on Ubuntu 12.04. We checked all the log files and there is nothing suspicious to blame to. Last stuff that was logged was some dovecot activity. There are no kernel panic messages. Nothing. It is a new server (new hardware) we are testing before production. And because it is new hard, I'm suspicious the problem may be due to some faulty hardware. We already run memtester with no problem detected. I'll be happy to hear from other hardware testing tools (the machine has SSD). Anyway, the thing I wanted to ask you is a different one. The strange thing is on every open file at the moment of the crash we found the next sequence of symbols was written into them: "@^@^@^@^@^@^@...". For example, on the syslog log file we got: Apr 16 15:53:56 odyssey dovecot: pop3-login: Aborted login (auth failed, 1 attempts): user=<info>, method=PLAIN, rip=46.29.255.73, lip=5.9.58.177 ^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^ [these continues for about 1000 chars...] ^@^@^@^@Apr 16 15:55:12 odyssey kernel: imklog 5.8.6, log source = /proc/kmsg started. We got all these symbols in all open files. These include: syslog, mail.log, kern.log, ... But also on some logs that are output by php scripts run in CRONs from user accounts (not root). So, any idea why all open files got these characters written during the crash? This is pretty bad since the crash corrupted many files (we don't even know which other ones may be affected). We are suspicious that all open files (in write mode maybe) at the moment of the crash got all these symbols inserted. Why is that? BTW [in case it helps], the system automatically rebooted after the crash but Apache did not start. There were not traces in /var/apache2/*log why apache did not start. After running a "service apache2 start" it started with no problems. Also, we rebooted the machine manually and Apache also started on reboot. But it did not start after the crash and no errors were reported. Thanks guys!

  • Postfix / Dovecot and Email Retrieval

    - by Eric J.
    I have setup Postfix and Dovecot on an Ubuntu box following the instructions http://www.exratione.com/2012/05/a-mailserver-on-ubuntu-1204-postfix-dovecot-mysql/ I can see that email is being delivered to and accepted by the server, but the email is not available for retrieval via POP3. What could be missing in my configuraton? It seems that email is not being properly handed off to Dovecot. Here are what I believe are the relevant /var/log/mail.log entries for an attempt to send email from another domain (hosted by Gmail) to the domain I have setup: Logged during SMTP connection postfix/smtpd[14689]: connect from mail-vb0-f50.google.com[209.85.212.50] postfix/smtpd[14689]: Anonymous TLS connection established from mail-vb0-f50.google.com[209.85.212.50]: TLSv1 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-RC4-SHA (128/128 bits) postfix/smtpd[14689]: 5782740ACF: client=mail-vb0-f50.google.com[209.85.212.50] postfix/cleanup[14696]: 5782740ACF: message-id=<CAEjmKcjHnTY4yk=3QXoNrD76=04g-s9utPguTFB02Fx53GMPmw@mail.gmail.com> postfix/qmgr[14687]: 5782740ACF: from=<[email protected]>, size=1947, nrcpt=1 (queue active) postfix/smtpd[14702]: connect from mail.destinationdomain.com[127.0.0.1] postfix/smtpd[14702]: 2940A41AA9: client=mail.destinationdomain.com[127.0.0.1] postfix/cleanup[14696]: 2940A41AA9: message-id=<CAEjmKcjHnTY4yk=3QXoNrD76=04g-s9utPguTFB02Fx53GMPmw@mail.gmail.com> postfix/qmgr[14687]: 2940A41AA9: from=<[email protected]>, size=2450, nrcpt=1 (queue active) amavis[21309]: (21309-02) Passed CLEAN, [209.85.212.50] <[email protected]> -> <[email protected]>, Message-ID: <CAEjmKcjHnTY4yk=3QXoNrD76=04g-s9utPguTFB02Fx53GMPmw@mail.gmail.com>, mail_id: W52ZB8FAAA+8, Hits: -0.101, size: 1946, queued_as: 2940A41AA9, [email protected], 784 ms postfix/smtpd[14702]: disconnect from mail.destinationdomain.com[127.0.0.1] postfix/smtp[14698]: 5782740ACF: to=<[email protected]>, relay=127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1]:10024, delay=1.1, delays=0.29/0.01/0/0.79, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 2.0.0 from MTA([127.0.0.1]:10025): 250 2.0.0 Ok: queued as 2940A41AA9) postfix/qmgr[14687]: 5782740ACF: removed dovecot: lda([email protected]): msgid=<CAEjmKcjHnTY4yk=3QXoNrD76=04g-s9utPguTFB02Fx53GMPmw@mail.gmail.com>: saved mail to INBOX postfix/pipe[14703]: 2940A41AA9: to=<[email protected]>, relay=dovecot, delay=0.08, delays=0.02/0.02/0/0.04, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (delivered via dovecot service) postfix/qmgr[14687]: 2940A41AA9: removed Logged during POP3 retrieval attempts dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<[email protected]>, method=PLAIN, rip=209.85.220.135, lip=10.195.83.10, mpid=14706 dovecot: pop3([email protected]): Disconnected: Logged out top=0/0, retr=1/2557, del=1/1, size=2540 postfix/smtpd[14689]: disconnect from mail-vb0-f50.google.com[209.85.212.50] dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<[email protected]>, method=PLAIN, rip=209.85.212.31, lip=10.195.83.10, mpid=14708 dovecot: pop3([email protected]): Disconnected: Logged out top=0/0, retr=0/0, del=0/0, size=0

  • need help upgrading small business wifi network

    - by Henry Jackson
    Our small business currently has 3 wireless access points around the building, each with their own SSID. Security is done with WEP (ick) and MAC address filtering (double ick). We are trying to reconfigure the setup, with these goals: wifi roaming between the access points user-based authentication that isn't as annoying as MAC address filtering. 1) The entire building is hardwired with ethernet, so I assume it should be easy to set up the routers to act as one big network, but I can't figure out how. Can someone point me in the right direction? The routers are consumer-grade linksys routers, is it possible to do this without getting new hardware? 2) For security, we will probably upgrade to WPA2, and I'm thinking of using the Enterprise version so that users can log in with a username, instead of having a single key (so if an employee leaves or something, their access can be removed). We have several on-site Windows servers, can one of them be set up as a RADIUS server, or is that best left to a dedicated machine (again, using existing hardware is good).
