  • Three server processes consume no more than 50% of Dual Core CPU

    I have three processes running on Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. From watching output of 'top' and graphs of CPU load (drawn by MRTG, data collection via SNMP) I can see that CPU load is never more than 50%, and, most of the day, when those processes are busy CPU load has a ceiling at 50 %. I mean, CPU load grows up to 50% in the morning and stays there until late evening. My first thought was that only one core was used at 100% thus giving 50% of both CPUs. But, as there are three processes running and from 'top' I see that both cores are being loaded, so this is not the case. schedtool shows that CPU affinity for those three processes is at default, 0x03, allowing them to use both cores. If I force one process to one core (schedtool -a 0x01), and two others to second (schedtool -a 0x02), cumulative usage grows beyond 50%. Why three processes seem to consume only 50% of two cores? Why forcing them to different CPUs allows usage to grow higher? Any hints? P.S. Processes in question are Counter-Strike servers.

    I need to get a Date from an SQL Server Database (SQL Server 2000), the date is stored as such: 2009-09-30 00:00:00.000 I want to pass this date into a Classic ASP function to use this date in the Database somewhere else, however when I get the date, it converts in my ASP code to a locale-dependant version, such as: 30/09/2009 I just want the date as-is as formatting the date so it is correct again seems unnecessary, although if this the only way then fine - is there any way to treat it as string data so it stays like that, so it can be inserted back into the database as the same date, without needing conversion?

  • How to salvage SQL server 2008 query from KILLED/ROLLBACK state without waiting half a day?

    I have a stored procedure that inserts batches of millions of rows, emerging from a certain query, into an SQL database. It has one parameter selecting the batch; when this parameter is omitted, it will gather a list of batches and recursively call itself, in order to iterate over batches. In (pseudo-)code, it looks something like this: CREATE PROCEDURE spProcedure AS BEGIN IF @code = 0 BEGIN ... WHILE @@Fetch_Status=0 BEGIN EXEC spProcedure @code FETCH NEXT ... INTO @code END END ELSE BEGIN -- Disable indexes ... INSERT INTO table SELECT (...) -- Enable indexes ... Now it can happen that this procedure is slow, for whatever reason: it can't get a lock, one of the indexes it uses is misdefined or disabled. In that case, I want to be able kill the procedure, truncate and recreate the resulting table, and try again. However, when I try and kill the procedure, the process frequently oozes into a KILLED/ROLLBACK state from which there seems to be no return. From Google I have learned to do an sp_lock, find the spid, and then kill it with KILL <spid>. But when I try to kill it, it tells me SPID 75: transaction rollback in progress. Estimated rollback completion: 0%. Estimated time remaining: 554 seconds. I did find a forum message hinting that another spid should be killed before the other one can start a rollback. But that didn't work for me either, plus I do not understand, why that would be the case... could it be because I am recursively calling my own stored procedure? (But it should be having the same spid, right?) In any case, my process is just sitting there, being dead, not responding to kills, and locking the table. This is very frustrating, as I want to go on developing my queries, not waiting hours on my server sitting dead while pretending to be finishing a supposed rollback. Is there some way in which I can tell the server not to store any rollback information for my query? Or not to allow any other queries to interfere with the rollback, so that it will not take so long? Or how to rewrite my query in a better way, or how kill the process successfully without restarting the server?

  • sys.dm_exec_query_stats interaction with recompilation

    We use sys.dm_exec_query_stats to track down slow queries and queries that are IO offenders. This works great, we get a lot of very insightful stats. It is clear this is not as accurate as running a profiler trace, as you have no idea when SQL Server will decide to chuck out a an execution plan. We have quite a few queries where the wrong execution plan is cached. For example queries like the following: SELECT TOP 30 a.Id FROM Posts a JOIN Posts q ON q.Id = a.ParentId JOIN PostTags pt ON q.Id = pt.PostId WHERE a.PostTypeId = 2 AND a.DeletionDate IS NULL AND a.CommunityOwnedDate IS NULL AND a.CreationDate @date AND LEN(a.Body) 300 AND pt.Tag = @tag AND a.Score 0 ORDER BY a.Score DESC The problem is that the ideal plan really depends on the date selected (screenshot of ideal plan): However if the wrong plan is cached, it totally chokes when the date range is big: (notice the big fat lines) To overcome this we were recommended to use either OPTION (OPTIMIZE FOR UNKNOWN) or OPTION (RECOMPILE) OPTIMIZE FOR UNKNOWN results in a slightly better plan, which is far from optimal. Executions are tracked in sys.dm_exec_query_stats. RECOMPILE results in the best plan being chosen, however no execution counts and stats are tracked in sys.dm_exec_query_stats. Is there another DMV we could use to track stats on queries with OPTION (RECOMPILE)? Is this behavior by-design? Is there another way we can for recompilation while keeping stats tracked in sys.dm_exec_query_stats? Note: the framework will always execute parameterized queries using sp_executesql

  • Possible disk IO issue

    I've been trying to really figure out what my IOPS are on my DB server array and see if it's just too much. The array is four 72.6gb 15k rpm drives in RAID 5. To calculate IOPS for RAID 5 the following formula is used: (reads + (4 * Writes)) / Number of disks = total IOPS. The formula is from MSDN. I also want to calculate the Avg Queue Length but I'm not sure where they are getting the formula from, but i think it reads on that page as avg que length/number of disks = actual queue. To populate that formula I used the perfmon to gather the needed information. I came up with this, under normal production load: (873.982 + (4 * 28.999)) / 4 = 247.495. Also the disk queue lengh of 14.454/4 = 3.614. So to the question, am I wrong in thinking this array has a very high disk IO? Edit I got the chance to review it again this morning under normal/high load. This time with even bigger numbers and IOPS in excess of 600 for about 5 minutes then it died down again. But I also took a look at the Avg sec/Transfer, %Disk Time, and %Idle Time. These number were taken when the reads/writes per sec were only 332.997/17.999 respectively. %Disk Time: 219.436 %Idle Time: 0.300 Avg Disk Queue Length: 2.194 Avg Disk sec/Transfer: 0.006 Pages/sec: 2927.802 % Processor Time: 21.877 Edit (again) Looks like I have that issue solved.   • Is Core Animation causing my subviews to call -drawRect for every single frame?

    I made a nice UIView subclass which paints all its stuff in -drawRect:, because people said that's good. That view is a subview of another. This another view is beeing animated with Core Animation: It's scaled down, rotated and moved. However, I encountered this: -drawRect seems to get called trillion of times during animation, and performance sucks. Is that normal or did I do something wrong, probably?

  • Problem creating ODBC connection to SQL Server 2008 with Vista

    Well, I'm trying to get a database schema thing working, first I tried just doing it in Linux where I'm more comfortable, but ODBC seems to be a hack there and I couldn't get it to work. So I figured it shouldn't be too hard in Windows.. Ok, so I created a SQL Server Client Alias so that I can simply same windowsserver to refer to my SQL server. Then, I went to the ODBC configuration in Control Panel. I clicked Add in the User DSN section. I chose Native SQL Server (10), and then clicked next. Then I typed a short name and a description and gave the servername as windowsserver/SQLEXPRESS Then, I click next, give it my user name and password and click next. Then, after like 2 minutes it says "Login Timeout Expired" What can be wrong here? I know the server is configured cause I have SQL Server Management Studio opened up with that server in it. I'm also just trying to connect over regular TCP/IP and my firewall is disabled.

  • Fedora Core 6 Migration

    I am at a loss as to what I should to for this server. I need it to run php5.3 and corresponding version of mysql. I received a client today through work that is using Fedora core 6 running 10 very small websites on some very hodge podge setup. My original idea was just upgrade to php5.3. I have yum (installed 3.0.8) reconfigured for the fedora archive. The latest version of php it allows is 5.1.8. I am still relatively new to server setups and am nervous about wiping their server to upgrade it. Since it is about 6-8 years old I'm not sure if it will even support the newest version of fedora. The server specs are: Parallels Plesk Panel version 9.5.4 Operating system Linux 2.6.9-023stab048.4-smp CPU GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Xeon(R)CPU E5335 @ 2.00GHz (10gb disk space and 1gb of memory). I use fedora for my personal server so I was a little familiar with it. I haven't done anything too extravagant. Is there a way I can escape this nightmare with installing php5.3 or do I need to migrate these sites to a new server?

  • Failover or load balancing configuration on Apple Xserve and Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard (10.6)

    I'm currently installing a number of Apple Xserve boxes running Mac OS X Server (10.6). After poking and prodding for a while I can't find any obvious way, or documentation telling me how, to set up the 2 ethernet ports in a failover or load-balancing configuration. There seems to be an obvious way to do link aggregation, but not failover or load-balancing? What's the default configuration if I enable both ports with the same (manually configured) IP address?

  • Launch script on login to RDS - server side

    I have a logon script that I want to be run when users login to remote desktop on my WinServer2008r2 box. I know I can do this client-side (in the RemoteDesktopClient "Run Program" options) but would rather it be enforced server-side. If I assign the logon script to a GPO, the script will be run whenever the user logs into their local PC. I would like to assign the logon script to the Remote Desktop Users group, but only when they're logging into remote desktop, not when they're logging into their own system. Thoughts?

  • Can't clone gitosis-admin.git local from my snow leopard server running gitosis

    I've installed gitosis as described here: http://gist.github.com/264304 One of the things that I had to adjust was to give my git user permissions to use ssh (which I did trough server admin - access - ssh and added the 'git' user). When I ssh from my local machine (mac osx) as the git user, I get this response: PTY allocation request failed on channel 0 bash: gitosis-serve: command not found Connection to 10.0.0.108 closed. Which I think is normal, because in Pro GIT the author says you should get something like this if you try ssh'ing to the server using your git user: PTY allocation request failed on channel 0 fatal: unrecognized command 'gitosis-serve schacon@quaternion' Connection to gitserver closed. So far so good, I think? Now when I try to clone my gitosis-admin.git repository using this command: $git clone [email protected]:gitosis-admin.git I get this: Initialized empty Git repository in /Users/joggink/gitosis-admin/.git/ bash: gitosis-serve: command not found fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly So after doing some searching, I found an answer here on serverfault claiming I should use ssh:// as protocol for my git clone (which I thought is the default git protocol?) However, when I try: $git clone ssh://[email protected]:gitosis-admin.git This is the response: The authenticity of host ' (::1)' can't be established. RSA key fingerprint is 80:4d:77:c7:78:cb:c9:42:e3:82:06:7c:fe:c0:08:ce. Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? yes Warning: Permanently added '' (RSA) to the list of known hosts.   • Confluence or apache on win server 2008 cant find scripts and images :(

    I am a newbie to both Tomcat and Apache. I have set the virtual hosts as described in Here. And JIRA works fine when i browse the URL jira.agmlab.com. However when i try to access Confluence(3.4.5) with confluence.agmlab.com the pages come in plain html, i can login and browse pages but there is no css or js so that my confluence pages look very ugly. what can possibly cause this and how to fix this? here is my virtual hosts definitions : # # Virtual Hosts # # If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your # machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Can it be something related with the permissions defined in Win Server 2008 ? maybe there is not enough rights (such as read execute ) in some users, directories ??
