• Balanced Search Tree Query, Asymtotic Analysis..

- by AGeek
Hi, The situation is as follows:- We have n number and we have print them in sorted order. We have access to balanced dictionary data structure, which supports the operations serach, insert, delete, minimum, maximum each in O(log n) time. We want to retrieve the numbers in sorted order in O(n log n) time using only the insert and in-order traversal. The answer to this is:- Sort() initialize(t) while(not EOF) read(x) insert(x,t); Traverse(t); Now the query is if we read the elements in time "n" and then traverse the elements in "log n"(in-order traversal) time,, then the total time for this algorithm (n+logn)time, according to me.. Please explain the follow up of this algorithm for the time calculation.. How it will sort the list in O(nlogn) time?? Thanks.

Sample Data : input : "abcdacdc" Output : "cadb" here we have to sort strings in order of count of characters. If the count is same for characters. maintain the original order of the characters from input string. my approach: i have used array of 26 for maintaining occurrence of all characters and sort it then print it.But while doing so i am not able to maintain order in case if two characters have same count. please suggest any improvement or any other algo.

• Use Android NDK for portability with iOS?

- by J-F L-R
I am currently planning to implement a little painting app using OpenGL ES 1.1. I believe this question applies to any OpenGL ES project. I am starting development on Android and I would like to know if you would recommend writing the drawing logic (using OpenGL) in C++ with the NDK so it will easier to port to iOS, or to use the Java API and being locked on Android. The reason I am asking that is because I have seen mixed opinions on the Web about using the NDK (some people say it is an added level of complexity). From what I have already seen, I believe that I should go with the Java API since I am starting on Android and then, if I decide to go on iOS, to rewrite the OpenGL logic in Objective-C or C++. This should be pretty straightforward since the calls appear to be the same in both languages. What do you think? Am I right?

• GQL Request BadArgument Error. How to get around with my case?

- by awegawef
My query is essentially the following: entries=Entry.all().order("-votes").order("-date").filter("votes >", VOTE_FILTER).fetch(PAGE_SIZE+1, page* PAGE_SIZE) I want to grab N of the latest entries that have a voting score above some benchmark (VOTE_FILTER). Google currently says that I cannot filter on 'votes' because I order by 'date.' I don't see a way that I can do this the way I want to, so I'd appreciate any advice.

• Is it OK to manage associations manually?

- by sosborn
Here are the relevant models: User Product Order A User can sell or buy products An order has a buyer, a seller and one product I know that I can do this with a HABTM relationship between orders and user, but is seems to me like it would be simpler to put in the Order table the following columns: :seller_id :buyer_id and manage those relationships manually as orders are only created once and never edited. However, this doesn't seem very Rails-like and I am wondering if I am missing something conceptually at the HABTM relationship.

• php sort properties of object

- by lannoo
I want to sort the properties of an object so I can loop through them in a defined order. for example: I have an object 'book' with the following properties: 'id', 'title', 'author', 'date'. Now i want to loop through these properties like this: foreach($book as $prop=>$val) //do something now the order of the loop has to be 'title', then 'author', 'date' and 'id' How would one do this? (I can't change the order of the properties in the class of the object because there arent any properties defined there, I get the object from the database with 'MyActiveRecord')

• Working with nested models in ROR

- by user487429
Hi there, I'm trying to create an application where users can freely create shops and associated shop item for a specific shop is displayed when a show action is called but I seem to be doing something wrong. Any help here will be appreciated. I have attached shots of my code below. class ShopItem < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :shop def self.find_shop_items_for_sale find(:all, :order => "title", :conditions => ["shop_id = ?", @shop.id]) end end class Shop < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :shop_items end #Controllers class ShopsController < ApplicationController def new @shop = Shop.new end def create @shop = Shop.new(params[:shop]) @shop.user_id = current_user.id respond_to do |format| if @shop.save flash[:notice] = "Successfully created shop." format.html {redirect_to(all_shops_shops_url)} format.xml {render :xml => @shop, :status => :created, :location => @shop } else format.html {render :action => 'new'} format.xml { render :xml => @shop.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } end end end def show @shop = Shop.find(params[:id]) @shop_items = ShopItem.find_shop_items_for_sale @shop_cart = find_shop_cart end class ShopItemsController < ApplicationController def user @per_page ||= 5 @user = User.find(params[:id]) @shop_items = ShopItem.find(:all, :conditions=>["user_id = ?", @user.id], :order=>"id desc") end def show @shop_item = ShopItem.find(params[:id]) @shop = @shop_item.shop respond_to do |format| format.html # show.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @shop_item } end end # GET /shop_items/new # GET /shop_items/new.xml def new @shop_item = ShopItem.new @shop = Shop.find(params[:id]) #@shop_items = ShopItem.paginate(:all, :condition=>["shop_id] = ?", @shop.id], :order=> "id desc", :page => params[:page],:per_page => @per_page) @shop_items = ShopItem.find(:all, :conditions=>["shop_id = ?", @shop.id], :order=> "id desc") @shop_item.shop_id = params[:id] respond_to do |format| format.html # new.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @shop_item } end end # GET /shop_items/1/edit def edit @shop_item = ShopItem.find(params[:id]) end # POST /shop_items # POST /shop_items.xml def create @shop_item = ShopItem.new(params[:shop_item]) @shop_item.user_id = current_user.id respond_to do |format| if @shop_item.save flash[:notice] = 'Shop item was successfully created.' format.html { redirect_to(@shop_item) } format.xml { render :xml => @shop_item, :status => :created, :location => @shop_item } else @shop = Shop.find(@shop_item.shop_id) #@shop_items = ShopItem.paginate(:all, :condition =>["shop_id = ?", @shop.id], :order=> "id desc" , :page => params[:page], :per_page => @per_page) @shop_items = ShopItem.find(:all, :conditions =>["shop_id = ?", @shop.id], :order=> "id desc") format.html { render :action => "new" } format.xml { render :xml => @shop_item.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } end end end

• jQuery after show() assumes that display:inline is :hidden. Why?

- by Janis Veinbergs
With jQuery 1.4.2, :hidden filter is not filtering out elements that were hidden, but i've made then visible by calling show(). Filter assumes it is still hidden. Is this bug or am i missing something? Consider the following code: $("td.ms-authoringcontrols > span[id*='_ParallelApprovers']:hidden:first").css("display") "none" $("td.ms-authoringcontrols > span[id*='_ParallelApprovers']:hidden:first").show() Object $("td.ms-authoringcontrols > span[id*='_ParallelApprovers']:hidden:first").css("display") "inline" // ?? Let me scratch my head... $("td.ms-authoringcontrols > span[id*='_ParallelApprovers']:hidden:first").is(":hidden") true //element with "display:inline", visible in browser, but yet it is hidden Instead of "inline", you would expect "none", because :hidden filter was used. What it does is from an array of objects it selects first hidden element. Each time i call these lines of code, i expect them to select next hidden element (not the one i just showed).

• PHP Based session variable not retaining value. Works on localhost, but not on server.

- by Foo
I've been trying to debug this problem for many hours, but to no avail. I've been using PHP for many years, and got back into it after long hiatus, so I'm still a bit rusty. Anyways, my $_SESSION vars are not retaining their value for some reason that I can't figure out. The site worked on localhost perfectly, but uploading it to the server seemed to break it. First thing I checked was the PHP.ini server settings. Everything seems fine. In fact, my login system is session based and it works perfectly. So now that I know $_SESSIONS are working properly and retaining their value for my login, I'm presuming the server is setup and the problem is in my script. Here's a stripped version of the code that's causing a problem. $type, $order and $style are not being retained after they are set via a GET variable. The user clicks a link, which sets a variable via GET, and this variable is retained for the remainder of their session. Is there some problem with my logic that I'm not seeing? <?php require_once('includes/top.php'); //first line includes a call to session_start(); require_once('includes/db.php'); $type = filter_input(INPUT_GET, 't', FILTER_VALIDATE_INT); $order = filter_input(INPUT_GET, 'o', FILTER_VALIDATE_INT); $style = filter_input(INPUT_GET, 's', FILTER_VALIDATE_INT); /* According to documentation, filter_input returns a NULL when variables are undefined. So, if t, o, or s are not set via URL, $type, $order and $style will be NULL. */ print_r($_SESSION); /* All other sessions, such as the login session, etc. are displayed here. After the sessions are set below, they are displayed up here to... simply with no value. This leads me to believe the problem is with the code below, perhaps? */ // If $type is not null (meaning it WAS set via the get method above) // or it's false because the validation failed for some reason, // then set the session to the $type. I removed the false check for simplicity. // This code is being successfully executed, and the data is being stored... if(!is_null($type)) { $_SESSION['type'] = $type; } if(!is_null($order)) { $_SESSION['order'] = $order; } if(!is_null($style)) { $_SESSION['style'] = $style; } $smarty->display($template); ?> If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

• How do I share common classes between windows forms and web applications using C#?

- by earthdog
In our environment we have multiple ERP servers plus data that are coming from multiple sources. I need to create a development roadmap for the coming years as it is obvious that side applications will be needed for many things. The choice is that the development will occur with Microsoft technologies. This means that I will be building either web apps (MVC, web forms e.t.c) or standard windows forms applications. The thing here is that I will be creating classes that will encapsulate the business logic that I want to apply to the different projects. What I thought so far: 1) Create class libraries dlls containing the required logic 2) Reuse these libs in my apps. But what about the web apps? Should I use the dlls directly or I should encapsulate them in web services and consume the web services in web apps? In general I would like to find out how should I build my strategy.

• Serializing a class containing a custom class

- by Netfangled
I want to serialize an object as xml that contains other custom classes. From what I understand (I've been reading MSDN and SO mostly), the XmlSerializer doesn't take this into account. This is the line that's confusing me: XML serialization serializes only the public fields and property values of an object into an XML stream. XML serialization does not include type information. For example, if you have a Book object that exists in the Library namespace, there is no guarantee that it will be deserialized into an object of the same type. Taken from MSDN, here For example, I want to serialize an object of type Order, but it contains a list of Products, and each one contains an object of type Category: class Order { List<Product> products; } class Product { Category type; } class Category { string name; string description; } And I want my Order object to be serialized like so: <Order> <Product>

</Product> <Product>

</Product> <Order> Does the XmlSerializer already do this? If not, is there another class that does or do I have to define the serialization process myself?

• When did the idea of macros (user-defined code transformation) appear?

- by Jay
I have read McCarthy's 1960 paper on LISP and found no reference to anything that's similar to user-defined macros or normal order evaluation. I was wondering when marcos first appeared in programming language history (and also in Lisp history): When was the idea of user-defined code transformation (before interpretation or compilation) first described (theoretically)? What was the first programming language implementation to have Lisp-like macros (by "Lisp-like" I mean "using a readable Turing-complete language to do code-transformation")? (including non-Lisps -- Forth for example is quite old, but I'm not sure if the first Forth implementation already had "IMMEDIATE") What was the first Lisp dialect to have macros? Thank you!

• jQuery: load refuses to get dynamic content in IE6

- by user260157
jQuery refuses to load my dynamic content in IE6. All in FireFox & Safari works fine. Only IE6 is being a pain. When I try the a html with
Hello World
that works. Properly. But when loading a PHP it doesn't work! • Is scala functional programming slower than traditional coding?

- by Fred Haslam
In one of my first attempts to create functional code, I ran into a performance issue. I started with a common task - multiply the elements of two arrays and sum up the results: var first:Array[Float] ... var second:Array[Float] ... var sum=0f; for(ix<-0 until first.length) sum += first(ix) * second(ix); Here is how I reformed the work: sum = first.zip(second).map{ case (a,b) => a*b }.reduceLeft(_+_) When I benchmarked the two approaches, the second method takes 40 times as long to complete! Why does the second method take so much longer? How can I reform the work to be both speed efficient and use functional programming style?

• Is there a 'catch' with FastFormat?

- by Roddy
I just read about the FastFormat C++ i/o formatting library, and it seems too good to be true: Faster even than printf, typesafe, and with what I consider a pleasing interface: // prints: "This formats the remaining arguments based on their order - in this case we put 1 before zero, followed by 1 again" fastformat::fmt(std::cout, "This formats the remaining arguments based on their order - in this case we put {1} before {0}, followed by {1} again", "zero", 1); // prints: "This writes each argument in the order, so first zero followed by 1" fastformat::write(std::cout, "This writes each argument in the order, so first ", "zero", " followed by ", 1); This looks almost too good to be true. Is there a catch? Have you had good, bad or indifferent experiences with it? CW on this question, as there's probably no right answer...

• Render multiple layers in XNA

- by Charles
I'm using XNA, and I've run into a little problem. I need to support multiple layers, each with a distinct z order (I call these "viewports"). A picture is worth a thousand words, so here's what it should look like: There are several things to notice here. Sprites do not render outside of their viewport, as you can see with Sprite B. Also, notice how the viewports are rendered - it's very similar to "layers" in Photoshop. Although Sprite C is has a z order of -1000, C still renders above Sprite A because its viewport's z-order is a greater than A's viewport's z-order. There's one last detail that I couldn't display very well in the above picture. Each viewport needs to optionally render a color over its region of the screen - you could think of it as a "tinting" affect. I'm completely at a loss when it comes to doing this the best way in XNA, so I could really use a short snippet of C#/VB.NET code that demonstrates this in action. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• "Never do in code what you can get the SQL server to do well for you" - Is this a recipe for a bad design?

- by PhonicUK
It's an idea I've heard repeated in a handful of places. Some more or less acknowledging that once trying to solve a problem purely in SQL exceeds a certain level of complexity you should indeed be handling it in code. The logic behind the idea is that for the large majority of cases, the database engine will do a better job at finding the most efficient way of completing your task than you could in code. Especially when it comes to things like making the results conditional on operations performed on the data. Arguably with modern engines effectively JIT'ing + caching the compiled version of your query it'd make sense on the surface. The question is whether or not leveraging your database engine in this way is inherently bad design practice (and why). The lines become blurred further when all the logic exists inside the database and you're just hitting it via an ORM.
