• how to convert Database Hierarchical Data to XML using ASP.net 3.5 and LINQ

  hello guys! i have a table with hierarchical structure. like this: and table data shown here: this strategy gives me the ability to have unbounded categories and sub-categories. i use ASP.net 3.5 SP1 and LINQ and MSSQL Server2005. How to convert it to XML? I can Do it with Dataset Object and ".GetXML()" method. but how to implement it with LINQtoSQL or LINQtoXML??? or if there is another simpler way to perform that? what is your suggestion? the best way? I searched the web but found nothing for .net 3.5 featuers.

  We have the following tools in place: Subversion (Version 1.5.9) Polarion (version 3.2.2) Polarion is based on Subversion, so on every action that changes anything (which is often the case), Polarion will use a Subversion commit to change anything. All things are currently stored in one and only one repository, so every commit of every user (some 100-200 on the same repository) will trigger the pre-commit hook. So what is the best strategy to provide pre-commit hooks that will trigger only for some, but not all projects run as fast as possible, because every pre-commit hook will block all other commits. We have tried to implement pre-commit hooks with Java (using SVNKit), but this will start on every commit a Java VM. So any ideas how to implement that nicely?

• Computer Flashes Out?

  We have a strange problem with our computers at my school. They are all Latitude 2100 Netbooks. At random points (I can't seem to find a pattern) the screen will turn a single color (red, green, black, brown, etc.) To fix this, the computer must be put to sleep, and brought back up. They have integrated graphics, but I can't imagine that if it was a bug with the computer itself, that every single computer would do this. Is there any way I could find out the problem that's causing this. Some diagnostic tool? Thanks. Edit: Forgot, they all have windows.

• Dynamic openrowset in T-Sql Function or viable alternative?

  I'm not quite sure how to phrase this. Here is the problem: I have 1-n items that I need to join to a different system (AS400) to get some data. The openrowset takes forever if I specify the where criteria outside of the openrowset, e.g.: select * from openrowset('my connection string', 'select code, myfield from myTable') where code = @code My idea was to create a function that takes in the item number and uses dynamic sql to inject it into the openrowset string, a la: declare @cmd varchar(1000) set @cmd = 'select * from openrowset('my connection string', ''select code, myfield from myTable where code = ' + @code + ''')' Apparently I can't use the insert.. exec.. strategy inside of a function. Is there any better way to achieve this? I was going to use this in joins where I needed the external data using cross apply. I'm not married to tvf and cross apply, but I do need a method of getting this data quickly. Thanks for any help.

  Suppose we have a DAG with edges labeled with numbers. Define the value of a path as the product of the labels. For each (source,sink)-pair I want to find the sum of the values of all the paths from source to sink. You can do this in polynomial time with dynamic programming, but there are still some choices that can be made in how you decompose the problem. In my case I have one DAG that has to be evaluated repeatedly with different labelings. My question is: for a given DAG, how can we pre-compute a good strategy for computing these values for different labelings repeatedly. It would be nice if there was an algorithm that finds an optimal way, for example a way that minimizes the number of multiplications. But perhaps this is too much to ask, I would be very happy with an algorithm that just gives a good decomposition.

  I bought this ASUS Sabertooth X58 motherboard from http://msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=7301 But I'm not sure what DDR3 RAM to buy. I haven't built a PC from scratch in about 3 years, and I'm wondering the following Do DDR3 ram chips need to be installed in three at a time? Or can I just install one or two now and install more later without any particular pattern? If I buy 2000MHz RAM from Corsair, will that work at 1866 MHz? (which is the highest frequency the motherboard supports) Is it just me or is 1866 RAM not around? Any help is greatly appreciated.

• WCF: Is it safe to override the Client's Dispose method using a partial class?

  I'd like to override the Dispose method of generated proxy (ClientBase) because of the fact that disposing of a proxy calls Close and can throw an exception when the channel is faulted. The only way I came up was to create a partial class to my generated proxy, make it inherit from IDisposable: public partial class MyServiceProxy : IDisposable { #region IDisposable Members public void Dispose() { if (State != System.ServiceModel.CommunicationState.Faulted) Close(); else Abort(); } #endregion } I did some test and my Dispose method is indeed called. Do you see any issue with this strategy? Also, I don't like the fact that I'll have to create this partial class for every generated proxy. It be nice if I was able to make my proxy inherit from a base class...

• Allow native DLL to output stdout / stderr in c# console application

  I have a native DLL which outputs via stdout / stderr. I have a C# console application which calls this DLL and outputs binary data to a parent C# application which started the C# console exe, processing stdout / stderr. Currently when I call the C# exe it works just fine (the DLL hooks up to the stdout of my console application and puts its data in just fine). Is this by design (and shouldn't be broken in future .NET framework versions)? Are there limitations on my managed code's deployment with this strategy (full-trust, permission requirements, GAC issues, etc)? I can't seem to find any documentation about stdout with a managed exe and an unmanaged dll both putting data in that standard output on MSDN. Thanks,

• How to indefinitely pause a thread in Java and later resume it?

  Maybe this question has been asked many times before, but I never found a satisfying answer. The problem: I have to simulate a process scheduler, using the round robin strategy. I'm using threads to simulate processes and multiprogramming; everything works fine with the JVM managing the threads. But the thing is that now I want to have control of all the threads so that I can run each thread alone by a certain quantum (or time), just like real OS processes schedulers. What I'm thinking to do: I want have a list of all threads, as I iterate the list I want to execute each thread for their corresponding quantum, but as soon the time's up I want to pause that thread indefinitely until all threads in the list are executed and then when I reach the same thread again resume it and so on. The question: So is their a way, without using deprecated methods stop(), suspend(), or resume(), to have this control over threads?

My question is: Do I need to change the schema a different way to make this work? Or is there something I can add/change/delete to the generated code or annotations?   Hi everyone I have developped an app on 22inch monitor at its max resolution when I run this on a laptop with a different ratio and a smaller resolution well the form is too big - to be expected but no scroll bar appear automaticaly to see the whole thing if needed I have tempered with all options but could not figure it out I have tried autoscroll of course but nothing I am sure it is not so difficult but I am stuck So if anyone could indicate me what properties to change I'll be most greatful or even better some easy strategy or components (even paying) to achieve a better screen resolution independance but the scrollbar would be great to start with Thanks & Regards Philippe Watel

  I would like to serve user uploaded content (pictures, videos, and other files) from a CDN. using Amazon S3 with cloudfront seems like a reasonable way to go. My only question is about the speed of the file system. My plan was to host user media with the following uri. cdn.mycompany.com/u/u/i/d/uuid.jpg. I don't haven any prior experience with S3 or CDN's and I was just wondering if this strategy would scale well to handle a large amount of user uploaded content. And if there might be another conventional way to accomplish this.

  Is there a way to specify distinct sequences for each table in Hibernate, if the ID is defined on a mapped superclass? All entities in our application extend a superclass called DataObject like this: @MappedSuperclass public abstract class DataObject implements Serializable { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.SEQUENCE) @Column(name = "id") private int id; } @Entity @Table(name = "entity_a") public class EntityA extends DataObject { ... } @Entity @Table(name = "entity_b") public class EntityB extends DataObject { ... } This causes all entities to use a shared sequence, the default hibernate_sequence. What I would like to do is use a separate sequence for each entity, for example entity_a_sequence and entity_b_sequence in the example above. If the ID were specified on the subclasses then I could use the @SequenceGenerator annotation to specify a sequence for each entity, but in this case the ID is on the superclass. Given that ID is in the superclass, is there a way I can use a separate sequence for each entity — and if so, how? (We are using PostgreSQL 8.3, in case that's relevant)

• ASP.NET High CPU Bringing Servers to their Knees

  Ok, our new build is having 100% cpu spikes on each server at random intervals. For long durations it make the site totally unresponsive - this will be at peak times as people in different countries log on to the site etc. We've looked at perfmom, memory profilers, CLR profiler, sql profilers, Red gate ants profiler, tried load testing in UAT - but cannot even reproduce the problem. This could mean only thousands of users hitting the live site causes it to happen. One pattern we did notice was that the new code - the broken build - actually uses noticably less threads. We are also using spring for IOC - does this have a bed reputation? To make things worse, we cannot deploy to live due to the business impact - so cannot narrow the problem down to subset of the new features we've added. We truly are destroyed - has anyone got any battle scars that may save us a few lives?

• php/dos : How do you parse a regedit export file?

  My objective is to look for Company key-value in the registry hive and then pull the corresponding Guid and other keys and values following it. So I figured i would run the regedit export command and then parse the file with php for the keys I need. So after running the dos batch command >regedit /E "output.txt" "HKLM\System....\Company1" The output textfile seems to be in some kind of UNICODE format which isn't regex friendly. I'm using php to parse the file and pull the keys.   I am trying to build a website using JBoss 7.1.1 and RESTeasy. I have managed to constructed and deploy and EAR with a both a WAR and an EJB-JAR contained within: voyager-app.ear META-INF/MANIFEST.MF META-INF/application.xml META-INF/jboss-app.xml lib/voyager-lib.jar voyager-adm.war voyager-ejb.jar voyager-web.war So far things are very simple. voyager-adm.war & voyager-lib.jar are empty (just the manifest file) but I know that I'm going to have code for them shortly. There is just one Stateful EJB - HarbourMasterBean (with just a local interface) and a few Database Entity Beans in the EJB jar file: voyager-ejb.jar META-INF/MANIFEST.MF META-INF/persistence.xml com/nutrastat/voyager/db/HarbourMasterBean.class com/nutrastat/voyager/db/HarbourMasterLocal.class com/nutrastat/voyager/db/PortEntity.class com/nutrastat/voyager/db/ShipEntity.class As far as I can tell the EJBs deploy correctly because the database units are created and the log shows that the publication of some HarbourMaster references: java:global/voyager-app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master!com.nutrastat.voyager.db.HarbourMasterLocal java:app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master!com.nutrastat.voyager.db.HarbourMasterLocal java:module/harbour-master!com.nutrastat.voyager.db.HarbourMasterLocal java:global/voyager-app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master java:app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master java:module/harbour-master The problem lies in getting the HarbourMaster EJB injected into my web bean.   I'm having a look at Entity Framework and everything I'm reading takes a data centric approach to explaining EF. By that I mean that the fundamental relationships of the system are first defined in the database and objects are generated that reflect those relationships. Examples Quickstart (Entity Framework) Using Entity Framework entities as business objects? The EF documentation implies that it's not necessary to start from the database layer, e.g. Developers can work with a consistent application object model that can be mapped to various storage schemas When designing a new system (simplified version), I tend to first create a class model, then generate business objects from the model, code business layer stuff that can't be generated, and then worry about persistence (or rather work with a DBA and let him worry about the most efficient persistence strategy). That object centric approach is well supported by ORM technologies such as (n)Hibernate. Is there a reasonable path to an object centric approach with EF? Will I be swimming upstream going that route? Any good starting points?

  I would like to somehow apply a try catch statement to all Actions as a backstop for any uncaught exceptions. I think this would be particularly helpful for Ajax Actions, because the catch statement could send back a default 4xx status code. Prototype's onFailure() function could then do the client-side error handling. How can I do this without wrapping the Action call with a try/catch in the cake dispatcher like this: try { output = $controller->dispatchMethod($params['action'], $params['pass']); } catch {...} Does anybody have a suggestion or another workable strategy for gaining this functionality without touching the dispatcher? How do people feel about putting exception handling in the Displatcher? I imagine when cake drops php 4 support, there will be a built-in mechanism for this.

  Is there any reason why non-global/first-occurrence substitution is the default in many text editing programs (vim, sed, perl, etc.)? I am talking about the /g flag of search and replace commands like: :s/pan/focaccia/g # in vim sed 's/sfortuna/fortuna/g' # with sed that will substitute every occurrence of the search pattern with the replacement string. After (not too) many years of vim and sed usage I still did not find any use case for non-global substitutions. Is there some valid historical reason? Or it is because it is? Thanks.
