• Is using ReaderWriterLockSlim a bad idea for long lived objects?

  I am trying to track down the reason that an application has periods of bad performance. I think that I have linked the bad performance to the points where Garbage Collection is run for Gen 2. I get a profiling tool (CLR Profiler) and was quite surprised by the results. In my test I was spawning and processing millions of objects. However the biggest hog of the Gen 2 space comes from something Called Threading.ReaderWriterCount which comes from System.Threading.ReaderWriterLockSlim::InitializeThreadCounts. I know nothing about the inner workings of ReaderWriterLockSlim but from what I am getting from the reports it is okay to have 1 or 2 Locks for longer lived objects but try and use other locks if you are going to have many smaller objects. Does anyone have any comments or experience with ReaderWriterLockSlim and/or what to look for if it seems that GC is killing application performance?

• Looking for a good example usage of get_or _create in Django views and raising a Form error

  I am looking for a good example of how to achieve the following: I would like to use get_or_create to check whether an object already exists in my database. If it does not, then it will be created. If it does exist, then I will not create the new object, but need to raise a form error to inform the user that they need to enter different data (for example, a different username). The view contains: p, created = Person.objects.get_or_create( email = registration_form.cleaned_data['email'], defaults = { 'creationDate': datetime.datetime.now(), 'dateOfBirth': datetime.date(1970,1,1) }) So 'p' will contain the existing Person if it exists, or the new Person if not. I would like to act on the boolean value in 'created' in order to skip over saving the Person and re-display the registration_form and raise an appropriate form validation error. The alternative I'm considering is doing a check in a custom Form validation method to see whether a Person exists with the data in the provided 'email' field, and just raising a validation error.

• Database design: circular references

  I have three database tables: users emails invitations Emails are linked to users by a user_id field. Invitations are also linked to users by a user_id field Emails can be created without an invitation, but every invitation must have an email. I would like to link the emails and invitations tables so it is possible to find the email for a particular invitation. However this creates a circular reference, both an invitation and an email record hold the id for the same user. Is this bad design and if so, how could I improve it? My feeling is that with use of foreign keys and good business logic, it is fine.

• error working with wsdl files in visual studio 2008

  Hi. I got a wsdl file in email. At first I didn't know how to use it. I've simply saved the file to my disk. Opened visual studio...added a service reference...provided path to file, and service was discovered. I opened the object browser to see the types and methods that got imported. I figure anything that ends with the name 'Client' is a good place to start using the web service. I've tried using a simple method to get data but it has run into and expception. Need help in resolving it. • Address extraction from emails in Java

  I'm looking for an Java open-source library which is able to extract address information from a (German) email (signature). The library should find name street city, city code/postal code email tel/fax address-parser.com is an commercial product, but an free (albeit simple) library would be great. stackoverflow.com/questions/16413/parse-usable-street-address-city-state-zip-from-a-string is asking for something similar, but my problem is broader because the address information is hidden in a complete email. And there isn't a solution either... Any ideas?

• SecurityException in Sandboxed AppDomain

  I'm attempting to use C# as a scripting language using CSharpCodeProvider (using VS2010 and .NET 4.0). I want the scripts to be run in a restricted AppDomain with minimal permissions. The library should find name street city, city code/postal code email tel/fax address-parser.com is an commercial product, but a free (albeit simple) library would be great. stackoverflow.com/questions/16413/parse-usable-street-address-city-state-zip-from-a-string is asking for something similar, but my problem is broader because the address information is hidden in a complete email. And there isn't a solution either... Any ideas?

• Simple MySQL Query taking 45 seconds (Gets a record and its "latest" child record)

  I have a query which gets a customer and the latest transaction for that customer. Currently this query takes over 45 seconds for 1000 records. This is especially problematic because the script itself may need to be executed as frequently as once per minute! I believe using subqueries may be the answer, but I've had trouble constructing it to actually give me the results I need. SELECT customer.CustID, customer.leadid, customer.Email, customer.FirstName, customer.LastName, transaction.*, MAX(transaction.TransDate) AS LastTransDate FROM customer INNER JOIN transaction ON transaction.CustID = customer.CustID WHERE customer.Email = '".$email."' • List Management Via MailChimp API

  I'm investigating using the MailChimp API to manage email notifications for a social networking site (similar to how Twitter sends email notifications to followers when a followee posts a new Tweet). My original plan was to have a "follower" list for each user in the app and then send an email to that list each time that user posts new content. However, it appears that the MailChimp API intentionally doesn't support creating campaign lists via the API (for CAN-SPAM reasons). I've read something about list segmentation in MailChimp, but I don't think that helps me with this situation. I'm curious if anyone else has run into a similar requirement to mine and how they dealt with it. Any insights would be most appreciated! Thanks.

• QT vs. Net - REAL comparisons for R.A.D. projects

  Man in all these Qt vs. .NET discussions 90% these people argue about the dumbest crap. Trying to get a real comparison chart here, because I know a little about both frameworks but I don't know everything. I believe Qt and .NET both have strengths and weaknesses. This is to make a comparison that highlights these so people can make more informed decisions before embarking on a project, in the spirit of R.A.D. Event Handling In Qt the event handling system is very simple. You just emit signals when something cool happens and then catch them in slots. ie. // run some calculations, then emit valueChanged(30, false, 20.2); and then catching it, any object can make a slot to recieve that message easily void MyObj::valueChanged(int percent, bool ok, float timeRemaining). It's easy to "block" an event or "disconnect" when needed, and works seamlessly across threads... once you get the hang of it, it just seems a lot more natural and intuitive than the way the .NET event handling is set up (you know, void valueChanged(object sender, CustomEventArgs e). And I'm not just talking about syntax, because in the end the .NET anonymous delegates are the bomb. I'm also talking about in more than just reflection (because, yes, .NET obviously has much stronger reflection capabilities). I'm talking about in the way the system feels to a human being. Qt wins hands down for the simplest yet still flexible event handling system ever i m o. Plugins and such I do love some of the ease of C# compared to C++, as well as .NET's assembly architecture, even though it leads to a bunch of .dll's (there's ways to combine everything into a single exe though). That is a big bonus for modular projects, which are a PITA to import stuff in C++ as far as RAD is concerned. Database Ease of Doing Crap Also what about datasets and database manipulations. I think .net wins here but I'm not sure. Threading/Conccurency How do you guys think of the threading? In .NET, all I've ever done is make like a list of master worker threads with locks. I like QConcurrentFramework, you don't worry about locks or anything, and with the ease of the signal slot system across threads it's nice to get notified about the progress of things. QConcurrent is the simplest threading mechanism I've ever played with. Memory Usage Also what do you think of the overall memory usage comparison. Is the .NET garbage collector pretty on the ball and quick compared to the instantaneous nature of native memory management? Or does it just let programs leak up a storm and lag the computer then clean it up when it's about to really lag? Doesn't the just-in-time compiler make native code that is pretty good, like and that only happens the first time the program is run? However, I am a n00b who doesn't know what I'm talking about, please school me on the subject.

• sending instant messages through python (msn)

  ok I am well aware there are many other questions about this, but I have been searching and have yet to find a solid proper answer that doesnt revolve around jabber or something worse. (no offense to jabber users, just I don't want all the extras that come with it) I currently have msnp and twisted.words, I simply want to send and receive messages, have read many examples that have failed to work, and msnp is poorly documented. My preference is msnp as it requires much less code, I'm not looking for something complicated.   in a form i have a buttoin, when click both OnclientClick and postback should happen. on clicking the "Email" button a client side "mailto" tag should do the work and pull a new message window on the client's machine. whereas, the email addresses should be invoked by the post back. so , when clicking the button the server side post should happen and on return the client side script should be invokded with the values read during post back, and populate all the email addresses. i need know how to first do a server hit take the values and then execute the client script with those values without using AJAX

• Mass-mailing without getting your domain banned

  I plan on sending an email to 10k+ email addresses (mostly gmail and yahoo) to announce the launch of my startup's product. I'm planning on using PHPMailer or PHPList to send out the mails. I've never mass-mailed before and had a few basic questions. I've already browsed through some of the other mass-mail threads on this forum but the questions remain hence a new thread. Are newsletters which are sent by so many other organizations sent out in a similar manner - using programs such as PHPMailer or PHPList? When would a GMail or a Yahoo blacklist my domain name - are there any set parameters - 1000 emails in an hour would result in getting banned or some such parameters? If yes, then what sort of settings should I take note of when sending the emails - any format of the email or spread out the 10+ emails over 2 days etc.? If a Gmail or a Yahoo blacklists your domain name - is there any way to get out of the blacklist?
