  • tool for advanced ID3 tags handling and audio files ordering

    I have following problem – some of my files do not have complete ID3 tags and some have typos or small differences in writing - so finally, my portable player sees “Mr. President” as different artist from “Mr President” and so on. I would need some tool which could search similar tags and then allow me to correct the typos or for example override “artist” in all selected files by manually entered text. The same with empty tag items – sometimes, the track name, album etc. is OK, but artist is missing etc. Without touching the audio quality, of course (but this should be no problem, I think). I already tried tools in Winamp, Songbird and other players and currently most advanced free tool I tried is Tagscanner. However, it is not able to to solve the problem with similar tags. Do you know such tool? Preferably free and for Windows, if possible. However, if you know some commercial app able to do this, please let me know.

  • Security Alert for CVE-2012-4681 Released

    Hi, this is Eric Maurice again! Oracle has just released Security Alert CVE-2012-4681 to address 3 distinct but related vulnerabilities and one security-in-depth issue affecting Java running in desktop browsers.  These vulnerabilities are: CVE-2012-4681, CVE-2012-1682, CVE-2012-3136, and CVE-2012-0547.  These vulnerabilities are not applicable to standalone Java desktop applications or Java running on servers, i.e. these vulnerabilities do not affect any Oracle server based software. Vulnerabilities CVE-2012-4681, CVE-2012-1682, and CVE-2012-3136 have each received a CVSS Base Score of 10.0.  This score assumes that the affected users have administrative privileges, as is typical in Windows XP.  Vulnerability CVE-20120-0547 has received a CVSS Base Score of 0.0 because this vulnerability is not directly exploitable in typical user deployments, but Oracle has issued a security-in-depth fix for this issue as it can be used in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to significantly increase the overall impact of a successful exploit. If successfully exploited, these vulnerabilities can provide a malicious attacker the ability to plant discretionary binaries onto the compromised system, e.g. the vulnerabilities can be exploited to install malware, including Trojans, onto the targeted system.  Note that this malware may in some instances be detected by current antivirus signatures upon its installation.  Due to the high severity of these vulnerabilities, Oracle recommends that customers apply this Security Alert as soon as possible.  Furthermore, note that the technical details of these vulnerabilities are widely available on the Internet and Oracle has received external reports that these vulnerabilities are being actively exploited in the wild.    Developers should download the latest release at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html   Java users should download the latest release of JRE at http://java.com, and of course   Windows users can take advantage of the Java Automatic Update to get the latest release.   • Computer suddenly won't boot - stops at a flashing prompt

    I have been running Ubuntu on my computer for a long time, and I have been using 11.10 since it became available in October. Suddenly, this morning, when I rebooted, the computer would not reach the log in screen. I go through the standard POST boot sequence, and I also get a splash screen for my Nvidia graphics card, so at least most of the hardware seems to be working. After that, all I get is a flashing text prompt - one blinking white underline character on a screen that is otherwise completely blank. I don't think it is even reaching GRUB. No key input is possible. I have tried various key combinations to try and initiate some kind of interface, be it command line or anything else. The only key combination that works is [CTRL]+[ALT]+[Delete] to reboot. I realize this is likely to be a hardware problem, but it could be an Ubuntu problem(?), so I'm hoping for a specific set of troubleshooting steps so I can diagnose and repair this issue. My current suspicion is that one of the drives in my 2 disk software RAID has failed (even though they should be too new for that). However, this computer is critical to my work, so I'd like to invite advice on any possibilities so as to waste as little time as possible in fixing this machine.

  • Is Java "dead in the water" as a consequence of Oracle buying Sun and subsequently suing Google

    Google has led many useful Java features (guava, gson); now that Oracle has purchased Sun will it effect its future enhancements and utilization as a development language. What exactly, or even approximately, are the legal ramifications? I thought Java was open source and would therefore remain unaffected ... ? Should Google just buy Oracle to get rid of the whole mess, that would be cool wouldn't it ? Do you think this is the beginning of the end for Java as a widely used language ? Its continued success as an open source/free technology is now doubtful?

  • Is there other ways to do insert/update/delete on a remote oracle database?

    I asked a question recently concerning the speed of execution of insert/update/delete using JDBC driver in a remote machine, but the problem cannot be solved easily. I would like to ask, is there any other way to execute the insert/update/delete to the oracle? The current situation is this: the DB is on a seperate machine than the java program used to update the DB. I looked up the internet and found people suggesting using pure sql or pl/sql to do the update, is that possible? And do we need to operate the sql or pl/sql in a local machine? Because I have no knowledge about pl/sql, so I am not sure if we can create some kind of script and call it on a remote machine. Let say the situation is like this: the input data is on machine A, and the original java program are also on machine A, but the oracle is on machine B. is there any other approach other than JDBC?

  • How do I find the correct Modeline to connect my computer to my Televsion

    I've been trying to hook up a Ubuntu computer with my Panasonic TH-42PA60A Plasma television for weeks now. My original question was asked here, which includes all the specifications about the Television in detail and how I've connected the computer to the televsion. So far, I've tried hooking up three other computers; 2 Ubuntu computers with fairly new graphic cards, and a Windows XP computer. None of them have been able to display an image on the television. The closest I've come to getting a picture up is with my small laptop running Ubuntu, however the image came out all purple and distorted. I had gotten the image by adding extra modes via the xrandr command, using a process similar to described here. I realize it might be possible to get this working if I had the correct modeline. I've checked the Modeline database, but the Panasonic TH-42PA60A is not listed. How can I find the correct modeline for my television. What commands can I use? I've read that there may be a danger of damaging my TV when doing things like this. What things should I avoid to prevent damaging my television?

  • Windows Recovery from Grub messed up my computer?

    Ok so I'm a noob when it comes to Operating Systems and I think I really messed up this time. So I have a laptop that dual boots Windows 7 and Linux Mint 11. I was trying to boot into Windows 7 but it would just have a black screen with a blinking cursor. So I turned off my computer and tried again. Still a black screen with a cursor. So I thought "well it must be broken somehow and I remembered seeing something like 'Windows Recovery' from the boot menu so I should try it." So when I turned on my computer a third time I selected 'Windows Recovery' (Something like that I can't remember exactly what it was called). After I had selected that I got a white Windows window that said in big red letters "ERROR". I turned off my computer again a turned it back on expecting the Grub menu to reappear. I was wrong. Instead I am greeted with error: no such partition grub rescue. Then I put in a live CD for ubuntu 11.04 and tried looking at my partitions using the disk manager. Looking at my partitions I notice that there isn't a Linux partition anymore and in its place is a unallocated space partition yet the Linux Swap partition is still there. My windows partition is still fine and I can access the files in it. If you understand what has happened, is there anyway I can get my files back? I don't care about reinstalling the OS again. I just want those files that are in the Linux Mint partition.
