• IUSR account and SCCM 2007 R3 agent

  I recently started working with SCCM and rolling the agent out with machine having IIS 7.x installed.  I ran into issues where the SCCM agent wouldn't install.  The errors mostly were 0x80004005 and 1603, another key one I found was Return Value 3 in the SCCM setup log.  During the troubleshooting, I found a cool utility called WMI Diag  WMI diag is a VBS script that reads the local WMI store and helps diagnose issue.  Anyone working with SMS or SCCM should keep this handy tool around.  The good thing my particular case WMI was healthy.  The issue turned out I changed the Anonymous Authentication module from using the IUSR account to inherit Application Pool identity.  Once we temporarily switched back to IUSR, installed the agent, then switched the setting back to inherit application pool identity, the SCCM agent installed with no issues. I'm not sure why switching back to the IUSR account solved my issue, if I find out I'll update the post.  More information on IIS 7 builtin accounts http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/140/understanding-built-in-user-and-group-accounts-in-iis-7 Specify an application pool identity  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771170(WS.10).aspx SCCM resources (Config Mgr Setup  / Deployment forums) http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrsetup/threads http://www.myitforum.com (the best independent SCCM community resource) Hope this helps. • What code smell best describes this code?

  Suppose you have this code in a class: private DataContext _context; public Customer[] GetCustomers() { GetContext(); return _context.Customers.ToArray(); } public Order[] GetOrders() { GetContext(); return _context.Customers.ToArray(); } // For the sake of this example, a new DataContext is *required* // for every public method call private void GetContext() { if (_context != null) { _context.Dispose(); } _context = new DataContext(); } This code isn't thread-safe - if two calls to GetOrders/GetCustomers are made at the same time from different threads, they may end up using the same context, or the context could be disposed while being used. Even if this bug didn't exist, however, it still "smells" like bad code. A much better design would be for GetContext to always return a new instance of DataContext and to get rid of the private field, and to dispose of the instance when done. Changing from an inappropriate private field to a local variable feels like a better solution. I've looked over the code smell lists and can't find one that describes this. In the past I've thought of it as temporal coupling, but the Wikipedia description suggests that's not the term: Temporal coupling When two actions are bundled together into one module just because they happen to occur at the same time. This page discusses temporal coupling, but the example is the public API of a class, while my question is about the internal design. Does this smell have a name? Or is it simply "buggy code"?

• Connecting to MSP430 via /dev/ttyACM0

  I'd like some suggestions about how to fix garbled serial output from a device connected on /dev/ttyACM0. Lately I've been working on a development project making use of TI's MSP430 microcontroller (specifically the eZ430-RF2560). Over on this thread you can see we've been testing some code and have found that the output of the microcontroller over serial is garbled. The btstack provides simple counter test program. When we run the program and look at the serial port output using PuTTY on Windows 7 we see: rfcomm_send_internal cid 117 doesn't exist! BTstack counter 26230 rfcomm_send_internal cid 117 doesn't exist! BTstack counter 26231 However if we connect from various Ubuntu clients we get something like: Stt.R. BTacn 0 BTacn 002BTacn 0 BTcct 04BTtacoe 5BTacun My current belief is that this is because the device is being detected by cdc_acm as a generic USB ACM device. Another thread about a similar microcontroller suggests that the device should use a specific usb serial driver. We've verified that the module is compiled on our system and did a "modprobe ti_usb_3410_5052" but this had no effect on cdc_acm.   I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 and I'm trying xvidcap to record a screencast with audio from the microphone, however it can't record any sound: $ xvidcap --file appo.avi --cap_geometry 700x500-0+0 Error accessing sound input from /dev/dsp Sound disabled! Sure enough /dev/dsp doesn't even exist: $ sudo ls -lh /dev/dsp ls: cannot access /dev/dsp: No such file or directory I found a blog post about fixing xvidcap sound input, however if I try the suggestion I get: $ sudo modprobe snd-pcm-oss FATAL: Module snd_pcm_oss not found. So the question is, how can I create /dev/dsp? The problem behind the problem is: how can I record sound from the microphone with xvidcap? So workarounds are welcome too. UPDATE: I've followed the suggestion of James, and something has improved. The error accessing /dev/dsp is gone, however now I get: [oss @ 0x8e0c120] Estimating duration from bitrate, this may be inaccurate xtoffmpeg.c add_audio_stream(): Can't initialize fifo for audio recording Now when I record xvidcap appears in the recording tab of pavucontrol and I can choose Audio stream from Internal Audio Analog Stereo or Monitor of Internal Audio Analog Stereo, I tried both just in case, but the video is still mute. UPDATE 2: I found that "Monitor of" is the one to record application sounds, while for microphone, I should choose "Internal Audio Analog Stereo". To rule out other problems, such as with the microphone, I tried with gnome-sound-recorder and it works. Actually I jumped on my chair, since the volume was too high! :-)

• Cannot get realtek8188ee to work in 14.04

  I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-A5300 laptop. When I run lspci -nn it shows 02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188EE Wireless Network Adapter [10ec:8179] (rev 01) It has always had the common problem others have asked about here (and many, many other places on the web) where it would connect, then drop the connection at random intervals. I tried every solution I could find, here & elsewhere, and they always caused errors after running "make" (more details below), but as I could still connect to networks I just dealt with it. I upgraded to 14.04 a few days ago and now it won't connect at all - I need help getting this to work.   Ok So I installed Apache httpd a while ago and have recently come back to it to try setup SSL and get it serving several different tomcat servers. At the moment I have two completely separate tomcat instances serving up to slightly different versions (one for dev and one for demo say) my web app to two different ports; mydomain.com:8081 and mydomain.com:8082 I've successfully (back in Jan) used mod_jk to get httpd to serve those same tomcat instances to http://www.mydomain.com:8090/dev and http://www.mydomain.com:8090/demo (8090 cos I've got another app running on 8080 via Jetty at this stage) using the following code in httpd.conf; LoadModule jk_module modules/mod_jk.so JkWorkersFile conf/workers.properties JkLogFile logs/mod_jk.log JkLogLevel debug <VirtualHost *:8090> JkMount /devd* tomcatDev JkMount /demo* tomcatDemo </VirtualHost> What I'm not trying to do is enable SSL I've added the following to httpd.conf Listen 443 <VirtualHost _default_:443> JkMount /dev* tomcatDev JkMount /demo* tomcatDemo SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile "/opt/httpd/conf/localhost.crt" SSLCertificateKeyFile "/opt/httpd/conf/keystore.key" </VirtualHost> But when I try to restart Apache with "apachectl restart" (yes after shutting down that other app I mentioned so it doesn't toy with https connections) I continuously get the error; "Invalid command 'SSLEngine', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration. httpd not running, trying to start" I've looked in the httpd/modules dir and indeed there is no mod_ssl, only mod_jk.so and httpd.exp. I've tried using yum to install mod_ssl, it says its already installed. Indeed I can locate mod_ssl.so in /usr/lib/httpd/modules but this is NOT the path to where I've installed httpd which is /opt/httpd and in fact /usr/lib/httpd contains nothing but the modules dir. Can anyone tell me how to install mod_ssl properly for my installed location of httpd so I can get past this error:

  Recently flipped to Ubuntu 11.10 on a Dell 4300 (Intel). Getting IP address and no issues (ping/surf) but Wireshark unable to detect eth0 interface. I see references in forums to blacklist tulip but looks like I am running dmfe. Not sure if the blacklist is required and where to go from here. Maybe Driver update? Got a little lost looking in that area.   Making Sense of ASP.NET Paths ASP.Net includes quite a plethora of properties to retrieve path information about the current request, control and application. There's a ton of information available about paths on the Request object, some of it appearing to overlap and some of it buried several levels down, and it can be confusing to find just the right path that you are looking for. To keep things straight I thought it a good idea to summarize the path options along with descriptions and example paths. I wrote a post about this a long time ago in 2004 and I find myself frequently going back to that page to quickly figure out which path I’m looking for in processing the current URL. Apparently a lot of people must be doing the same, because the original post is the second most visited even to this date on this blog to the tune of nearly 500 hits per day. So, I decided to update and expand a bit on the original post with a little more information and clarification based on the original comments. Request Object Paths Available Here's a list of the Path related properties on the Request object (and the Page object). Assume a path like http://www.west-wind.com/webstore/admin/paths.aspx for the paths below where webstore is the name of the virtual. Request Property Description and Value ApplicationPath Returns the web root-relative logical path to the virtual root of this app. /webstore/ PhysicalApplicationPath Returns local file system path of the virtual root for this app. c:\inetpub\wwwroot\webstore PhysicalPath Returns the local file system path to the current script or path. c:\inetpub\wwwroot\webstore\admin\paths.aspx Path FilePath CurrentExecutionFilePath All of these return the full root relative logical path to the script page including path and scriptname. CurrentExcecutionFilePath will return the ‘current’ request path after a Transfer/Execute call while FilePath will always return the original request’s path. /webstore/admin/paths.aspx AppRelativeCurrentExecutionFilePath Returns an ASP.NET root relative virtual path to the script or path for the current request. If in  a Transfer/Execute call the transferred Path is returned. ~/admin/paths.aspx PathInfo Returns any extra path following the script name. If no extra path is provided returns the root-relative path (returns text in red below). string.Empty if no PathInfo is available. /webstore/admin/paths.aspx/ExtraPathInfo RawUrl Returns the full root relative URL including querystring and extra path as a string. /webstore/admin/paths.aspx?sku=wwhelp40 Url Returns a fully qualified URL including querystring and extra path. Note this is a Uri instance rather than string. http://www.west-wind.com/webstore/admin/paths.aspx?sku=wwhelp40 UrlReferrer The fully qualified URL of the page that sent the request. This is also a Uri instance and this value is null if the page was directly accessed by typing into the address bar or using an HttpClient based Referrer client Http header. http://www.west-wind.com/webstore/default.aspx?Info Control.TemplateSourceDirectory Returns the logical path to the folder of the page, master or user control on which it is called. This is useful if you need to know the path only to a Page or control from within the control. For non-file controls this returns the Page path. /webstore/admin/ As you can see there’s a ton of information available there for each of the three common path formats: Physical Path is an OS type path that points to a path or file on disk. Logical Path is a Web path that is relative to the Web server’s root. It includes the virtual plus the application relative path. ~/ (Root-relative) Path is an ASP.NET specific path that includes ~/ to indicate the virtual root Web path. ASP.NET can convert virtual paths into either logical paths using Control.ResolveUrl(), or physical paths using Server.MapPath(). Root relative paths are useful for specifying portable URLs that don’t rely on relative directory structures and very useful from within control or component code. You should be able to get any necessary format from ASP.NET from just about any path or script using these mechanisms. ~/ Root Relative Paths and ResolveUrl() and ResolveClientUrl() ASP.NET supports root-relative virtual path syntax in most of its URL properties in Web Forms. So you can easily specify a root relative path in a control rather than a location relative path: <asp:Image runat="server" ID="imgHelp" ImageUrl="~/images/help.gif" /> ASP.NET internally resolves this URL by using ResolveUrl("~/images/help.gif") to arrive at the root-relative URL of /webstore/images/help.gif which uses the Request.ApplicationPath as the basepath to replace the ~. By convention any custom Web controls also should use ResolveUrl() on URL properties to provide the same functionality. In your own code you can use Page.ResolveUrl() or Control.ResolveUrl() to accomplish the same thing: string imgPath = this.ResolveUrl("~/images/help.gif"); imgHelp.ImageUrl = imgPath; Unfortunately ResolveUrl() is limited to WebForm pages, so if you’re in an HttpHandler or Module it’s not available. ASP.NET Mvc also has it’s own more generic version of ResolveUrl in Url.Decode: <script src="<%= Url.Content("~/scripts/new.js") %>" type="text/javascript"></script> which is part of the UrlHelper class. In ASP.NET MVC the above sort of syntax is actually even more crucial than in WebForms due to the fact that views are not referencing specific pages but rather are often path based which can lead to various variations on how a particular view is referenced. In a Module or Handler code Control.ResolveUrl() unfortunately is not available which in retrospect seems like an odd design choice – URL resolution really should happen on a Request basis not as part of the Page framework. Luckily you can also rely on the static VirtualPathUtility class: string path = VirtualPathUtility.ToAbsolute("~/admin/paths.aspx"); VirtualPathUtility also many other quite useful methods for dealing with paths and converting between the various kinds of paths supported. One thing to watch out for is that ToAbsolute() will throw an exception if a query string is provided and doesn’t work on fully qualified URLs. I wrote about this topic with a custom solution that works fully qualified URLs and query strings here (check comments for some interesting discussions too). Similar to ResolveUrl() is ResolveClientUrl() which creates a fully qualified HTTP path that includes the protocol and domain name. It’s rare that this full resolution is needed but can be useful in some scenarios. Mapping Virtual Paths to Physical Paths with Server.MapPath() If you need to map root relative or current folder relative URLs to physical URLs or you can use HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath(). Inside of a Page you can do the following: string physicalPath = Server.MapPath("~/scripts/ww.jquery.js")); MapPath is pretty flexible and it understands both ASP.NET style virtual paths as well as plain relative paths, so the following also works. string physicalPath = Server.MapPath("scripts/silverlight.js"); as well as dot relative syntax: string physicalPath = Server.MapPath("../scripts/jquery.js"); Once you have the physical path you can perform standard System.IO Path and File operations on the file. Remember with physical paths and IO or copy operations you need to make sure you have permissions to access files and folders based on the Web server user account that is active (NETWORK SERVICE, ASPNET typically). Note the Server.MapPath will not map up beyond the virtual root of the application for security reasons. Server and Host Information Between these settings you can get all the information you may need to figure out where you are at and to build new Url if necessary. If you need to build a URL completely from scratch you can get access to information about the server you are accessing: Server Variable Function and Example SERVER_NAME The of the domain or IP Address wwww.west-wind.com or 127.0.0.1 SERVER_PORT The port that the request runs under. 80 SERVER_PORT_SECURE Determines whether https: was used. 0 or 1 APPL_MD_PATH ADSI DirectoryServices path to the virtual root directory. Note that LM typically doesn’t work for ADSI access so you should replace that with LOCALHOST or the machine’s NetBios name. /LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT/webstore Request.Url and Uri Parsing If you still need more control over the current request URL or  you need to create new URLs from an existing one, the current Request.Url Uri property offers a lot of control. Using the Uri class and UriBuilder makes it easy to retrieve parts of a URL and create new URLs based on existing URL. The UriBuilder class is the preferred way to create URLs – much preferable over creating URIs via string concatenation. Uri Property Function Scheme The URL scheme or protocol prefix. http or https Port The port if specifically specified. DnsSafeHost The domain name or local host NetBios machine name www.west-wind.com or rasnote LocalPath The full path of the URL including script name and extra PathInfo. /webstore/admin/paths.aspx Query The query string if any ?id=1 The Uri class itself is great for retrieving Uri parts, but most of the properties are read only if you need to modify a URL in order to change it you can use the UriBuilder class to load up an existing URL and modify it to create a new one. Here are a few common operations I’ve needed to do to get specific URLs: Convert the Request URL to an SSL/HTTPS link For example to take the current request URL and converted  it to a secure URL can be done like this: UriBuilder build = new UriBuilder(Request.Url); build.Scheme = "https"; build.Port = -1; // don't inject portUri newUri = build.Uri; string newUrl = build.ToString(); Retrieve the fully qualified URL without a QueryString AFAIK, there’s no native routine to retrieve the current request URL without the query string. It’s easy to do with UriBuilder however: UriBuilder builder = newUriBuilder(Request.Url); builder.Query = ""; stringlogicalPathWithoutQuery = builder.ToString();

    while waiting for the Superbowl, I thought I would write this..... 2014 will not only see the release of a new version of SQL Server, but also accompanying this is the release of courses and certification tracks from Microsoft Learning Experience – formerly Microsoft Learning -- that will support the education of SQL Server and related technologies. The notable addition in the curriculum, is substantial material on cloud and big data features that pertain to data and business intelligence. There are entire module/chapters that are dedicated Power BI, SQL Azure and HDInsight. Certifications and courses from Microsoft can get stick – sometimes fair and sometimes unfairly. Whilst I am a massive advocate of community to get information and education. Microsoft’s new courses will bring clarity to the burning topics of the moment and help you to understand the capabilities of Power BI and HDInsight. From a business intelligence perspective there will be three courses: 20463C: Data warehousing in SQL Server 2014 20466C: data models and reports in SQL Server 2014 20467A: Designing Self-Service Business Intelligence and Big Data Solutions These are not the exact titles of the course, but will be confirmed prior to the release. • I'm trying to install VMWare tools on Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS and I seem to have a problem with Kernel headers

  I have Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS installed on a VMware machine on Windows 7 host. I seem to have a problem with Kernel headers when trying to install them I did: sudo apt-get install gcc make build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done gcc is already the newest version. build-essential is already the newest version. linux-headers-3.5.0-28-generic is already the newest version. make is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 100 not upgraded.   I just revisited the “Micro Framework”- Microsoft’s bootable runtime, essentially an OS that allows managed code to run on small 32bit CPUs, even without Memory Management.  Things are happening http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/bb267253.aspx Abstract The Microsoft .NET Micro Framework is a bootable runtime module that brings the advantages of .NET programming to devices too resource-constrained to run other Microsoft embedded platforms. The benefits of developing with the .NET Micro Framework include the C# programming language, a managed execution environment, a substantial subset of the .NET libraries, and Visual Studio™ deployment and debugging. In this white paper we explain why the .NET Micro Framework is an ideal choice for embedded development and provide technical details of the platform’s Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) and Common Language Runtime (CLR). “Micro Framework” is an interesting product, it is very low cost, like zero. And it is largely community controlled under the Apache License.  A partner network is building, and the application environment is .NET. I have been following this for some time, and the community open source approach seems to be working.  There are new features/packages emerging, for example an F# programming language (ARGH! I am still wresting with VB and C#). Anyway, what I found most interesting was a port to Tron.  Tron is a very popular Japanese open source intuitive.  It is a very real time, very compact kernel, and is, like the Micro Framework, ‘free as beer’.  One limit on MF was it was not real time.  But the merger with Tron may eliminate that problem.  Certainly, if I were dealing with a consumer product with quantities in the millions (like a SmartGrid device, or a toy) I would seriously consider something out of this technology pool.

• I can't add PPA repository behind the proxy (with @ in the username)

• Getting Query Parameters in Javascript

  I find myself needing to get query parameters that are passed into a web app on the URL quite often. At first I wrote a function that creates an associative array (aka object) with all of the parameters as keys and returns it. But then I was looking at the revealing module pattern, a nice javascript design pattern designed to hide private functions, and came up with a way to do this without even calling a function. What I came up with was this nice little object that automatically initializes itself into the same associative array that the function call did previously. // Creates associative array (object) of query params var QueryParameters = (function() {     var result = {};     if (window.location.search)     {         // split up the query string and store in an associative array         var params = window.location.search.slice(1).split("&");         for (var i = 0; i < params.length; i++)         {             var tmp = params[i].split("=");             result[tmp[0]] = unescape(tmp[1]);         }     }     return result; }()); Now all you have to do to get the query parameters is just reference them from the QueryParameters object. There is no need to create a new object or call any function to initialize it. var debug = (QueryParameters.debug === "true"); or if (QueryParameters["debug"]) doSomeDebugging(); or loop through all of the parameters. for (var param in QueryParameters) var value = QueryParameters[param]; Hope you find this object useful.

  Before getting started with the JMS Adapter, we must configure the connection factories/JMS queues on the WLS admin console. In particular, we will be required to follow these stepsCreate a connection factory. In our case, we will create a "XA Connection Factory". This step is mandatory if you need your JMS queues to participate in a global transaction. Create the WLS JMS QueuesCreating the connection factory:1) Login to the WLS Admin console. On my setup, the url looks like "http://localhost:7001/console".2) Select Services -> Messaging -> JMS Modules -> SOAJMSModule as shown below. We can also create a new JMS Module, but, I took the easier way out by selecting the SOAJMSModule. 3) Click on "New" as shown in order to create the Connection factory.4) Select "Connection Factory" radio button and click "Next".5) Enter the Connection Factory properties as shown and click on "Finish".6) Target the connection factory to your managed server and click on "Finish". 7) Now, go back and select the Connection Factory that you've just created (see Step 2 above) . Click on "Transactions" and enable XA and click on "Save".

• UBJsonReader (Libgdx) unable to to read UBJson from Python(Blender)

  I am working on an export tool from Blender to Libgdx, exports like custom attributes and other information (Almost completed), this is a very cool tool that will speed up a lot your works, after I completed I will send to public to contribute forum, Export format is uses python's Standard Json module and readable text, it of course works fine, but I wanna also have a Binary Json export for faster load, so users can Export Straight to Libgdx, but after I search I found that UBJson with draft9.py (simpleubjson 0.6.1) encode is seems matches with one FBXConverter's UBJsonWriter( Xoppa wrote), but when I export, I am not able to read the file, and send this errors (Java heap space) seems this is a different between byte sizes in UBJson(python) and UBJsonReader. how can I write a correct one in python that matches with Libgdx's UBJsonReader, and would be cross-platform?
