Hi guys,
I'm about to create a java crossword application but I am unsure of what packages to use to draw the crossword grid. I know you can manually draw grids with Graphics2D etc. but I'm not sure if this is the easiest way to do it as I'll need text fields in the grid squares.
Anyone have any suggestions as to creating the crossword grid.
Is there some sort of exception in Java to catch an invalid Date object? I'm trying to use it in the following method, but I don't know what type of exception to look for. Is it a ParseException.
public boolean setDate(Date date) {
this.date = date;
return true;
}
I am using PBE encryption to encrypt and decrypt some text on an Android application but I get the BadPaddingException: with the "pad block corrupted" message when I use the wrong private key to decrypt the text.
My question, since I am not well versed with encryption in Java, is if this is the normal behavior of the encryption API, because I need to do some logic in the case when the wrong key is entered, but I do not know the private key, nor do I store it anywhere (storing just the encrypted and decrypted check text).
Thanks,
Mihai
Is there a Java convention to refer to methods, static and otherwise, any specific one or the whole overload, etc?
e.g.
String.valueOf - referring to all overloads of static valueOf
String.valueOf(char) - specific overload, formal parameter name omittable?
String.split - looks like a static method, but actually an instance method
Maybe aString.split is the convention?
String#split - I've seen this HTML anchor form too, which I guess is javadoc-influenced
Is there an authoritative recommendation on how to clearly refer to these things?
I would like to have a mapping which maps two string into one string. For example: map["MainServer","Status"] return "active". What is the best way to do it in Java. Should I use HashMap which include another HashMap as its elements?
I'm very new to Java/COLT so apologies if this is a dumb question... But, is it possible to define (2d) matrices of type "long" using the cern.colt.matrix stuff? If so, how?! I can find an abstract class for "Object" and a concrete implementation for "double", but then I am stuck... Thanks,
I have been trying to implement and undo/redo system in a game I am coding in Java. I am taking the approach of serializing the state of the game after each move. I there a way of saving the serialized objects on a stack and accessing them for undo/redo?
I want to print the content of a simple text file in java exactly the way the text appears in the text file. The print out has the same content as the text file but the format is not the same. tabs and line breaks are ignored in the print out. Any help will be very much appreciated.

I am using XMLRPC to get data from a Java server. I use HashMap as return value for a particular remote call. The server puts a long int into the HashMap (which is returned) along with other data. At the client end, which is ruby, I get all other data but for the long int. How can I get this data at the client?

I have a java string which has an dollar value and cents value after decimal points and starting with a + or - sign. I want to convert into cents and store it in a integer (it can have + or -). Also i need to check if the cents part (after decimal point) not more than 2 digits and throw an error message if exists
example :
String dollval= "12.23" ,"12","-0.09", "-99","-99.0", "-99.23","0.00"
int dollint = 1223,12,-9,-99,-00,-9923,0
In the same spirit of other platforms, it seemed logical to follow up with this question: What are common non-obvious mistakes in Java? Things that seem like they ought to work, but don't.
I won't give guidelines as to how to structure answers, or what's "too easy" to be considered a gotcha, since that's what the voting is for.

By extending class Vector, Java’s designers were able to create class Stack quickly. What are
the negative aspects of this use of inheritance, particularly for class Stack?
Thanks a lot.
I've downloaded, unzipped and setup Eclipse 3.4.2 with some plugins (noteable, EPIC, Clearcase, QuantumDB, MisterQ).
Now I find when I'm editing Java projects the code completion is not working. If I type String. and press ctrl-space a popup shows "No Default Proposals" and the status bar at the bottom shows "No completions available".
Any ideas?
Thanks....
So suppose I'm developing a chess-like program using Java's Swing. I added a MouseListener to handle user input. To make a move the user must click a valid piece and then click a valid place. What's the best way to track the 2 mouse clicks in a turn? I'm thinking in use some kind of variable to record if is the turn's first click or second.
Im reading in 2 csv file: store_inventory & new_acquisitions... I want to be able to compare the store_inventory csv file with new_acquisitions.
1) If the item names match just update the quantity in store_inventory.
2) If new_acquisitions has a new item that does not exist in store_inventory, then add it to the store_inventory.
Heres what i have so far but its not very good. I added comments where i need to add taks 1) & 2). Any advice or code would be great, thanks.
File new_acq = new File("/src/test/new_acquisitions.csv");
Scanner acq_scan = null;
try {
acq_scan = new Scanner(new_acq);
} catch (FileNotFoundException ex) {
Logger.getLogger(mainpage.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
}
String itemName;
int quantity;
Double cost;
Double price;
File store_inv = new File("/src/test/store_inventory.csv");
Scanner invscan = null;
try {
invscan = new Scanner(store_inv);
} catch (FileNotFoundException ex) {
Logger.getLogger(mainpage.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
}
String itemNameInv;
int quantityInv;
Double costInv;
Double priceInv;
while (acq_scan.hasNext()) {
String line = acq_scan.nextLine();
if (line.charAt(0) == '#') {
continue;
}
String[] split = line.split(",");
itemName = split[0];
quantity = Integer.parseInt(split[1]);
cost = Double.parseDouble(split[2]);
price = Double.parseDouble(split[3]);
while(invscan.hasNext()) {
String line2 = invscan.nextLine();
if (line2.charAt(0) == '#') {
continue;
}
String[] split2 = line2.split(",");
itemNameInv = split2[0];
quantityInv = Integer.parseInt(split2[1]);
costInv = Double.parseDouble(split2[2]);
priceInv = Double.parseDouble(split2[3]);
if(itemName == itemNameInv) {
//update quantity
}
}
//add new entry into csv file
}
Thanks again for any help. =]

Why do we have compile-time error and not compile-time exception in java ?
I mean to say that we never say compile-time exception.
We tend to say it as compile-time error.
Is there any specific reason for the same ??
Any suggestions are welcomed....
Thanks !
I am planning to write a Java applet for Tower of Hanoi similar to link(
http://www.mazeworks.com/hanoi/index.htm )
Can you suggest how should I start and proceed.
And, btw, does it require multi threading?
And also, major part of my doubt is
to make a disc being clickable and being able to drag and drop the disc on a tower.
detect a tower (if a disc is being dragged using mouse)

Hi all,
Does anyone know whether there is a java library for parsing a MySQL schema? In code I want to be able to determine the tables and fields specified in a schema. Or am I going to have to write my own?
Thanks Richard.
Hi:
Is there a way in Java to do a Nslookup search on SRV records?
I need to bind to Active Directory and would like to use the SRV records to help determine which of the ADs in the cluster are live.
In command line the nslookup search string is: 'nslookup -type=srv _ ldap._tcp.ActiveDirectory domain name'
Thanks.
