• Can I let maximized windows reach behind the gnome-panel?

  My top gnome-panel is set to not expand and sits on the top-right of my screen. I just realized I wouldn't mind if maximized windows were able to get behind it (it wouldn't actually cover up anything). Is it possible to achieve that with the gnome-panel? Here's what it looks like now: Ideally, the window's titlebar would be behind the panel (partially obscured by it). I know that different dock softwares like AWN are able to do that, but I'm running a weak netbook, and I would rather do that with the gnome-panel.

• How can I make the draggable window border thicker, without changing the appearance?

  When you want to resize a window in gnome (as well as in other systems) you can click-and-hold at the window's border and than drag it. The problem is (and do correct me if I'm wrong here) that the draggable border is just a couple of pixels thick in gnome. That tends to be a little frustrating, and contributes to my wrist pains from using the mouse, as it requires very careful movement of the mouse. How can I change the thickness of the area I can click in order to resize a window? I don't want to increase the appearance of the window border, I'm not talking about eye candy here. I want to fine tune this functionality where I can resize a window by dragging its border. Is there a setting somewhere that will change this?

• Ubuntu won't suspend anymore, but it did upon install.

  I fresh installed Ubuntu 10.10 back when it came out, and my laptop was suspending fine. All of a sudden, I can't get my laptop to suspend anymore. It's an HP Pavilion dv2-1110, but I don't think it's a hardware issue, here's why: It suspended fine upon first install. I haven't installed any new kernels since then, but I have installed tons of packages, so it's probably a package. The suspend and hibernate options disappeared from the shutdown menu. If I press my keyboard's suspend button (or if I close the lid) I get the following message: If I try the command pmi action suspend, I get the error message: Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.Hal was not provided by any .service files. If I try the command echo -n mem > sudo /sys/power/state I get absolutely no output and no visible effect. What might be causing this behavior? I thought a list of installed packages might be useful, but it's huge and I don't know how to post it here in collapse/expand mode or something. EDIT:Just in case someone asks, none of the installed packages are kdm or anything like that (which would justify the lack of options in gnome's shutdown menu).

• Decrease mouse sensitivity below the standard limit.

  I've got a USB mouse attached to my Ubuntu notebook. This mouse is (unfortunately) really sensitive, and so it sometimes gets hard to hit small icons with the mouse pointer. This is really a hardware issue, it's not a bug and it's not Ubuntu's/gnome's fault. Still, I would very much like to this issue through software (solving through hardware would imply buying a new mouse). Back in Windows, if I set the sensitivity as really low it was comfortable enough. In Ubuntu, even the lowest sensitivity and acceleration available (in the SystemPrerencesMouse menu) is still frustrating. How can I decrease it below the default minimum? I tried xset, but it seems xset only deals with acceleration and threshold, but not actual sensitivity.

• How can I autoclean my gnome main menu?

  I like to experiment with lots of different software in my Ubuntu install. Then, every time Ubuntu reaches a new release cycle, I simply do a clean install (instead of upgrading) to get rid of all the extra software (and their respective config files/folders). The only thing I always backup and carry to the next install (besides personal files) are the config files for gnome, so my desktop is always the way I like it. =) The problem with that, is that the different packages I test out never get properly uninstalled, so my gnome main menu is full of broken links referring to software I had in previous installations (which got carried over because I kept the gnome config files). Is there any automated way to go through my gnome main menu and remove any broken links? I know how to manually edit the menu, and I could go through it myself, but I'm looking for some script or package that will clean for me so I wouldn't have to do it manually every release cycle.

• How do I find out which process is eating up my bandwidth?

  I think I'm being the victim of a bug here. Sometimes while I'm working (I still don't know why), my network traffic goes up to 200 KB/s and stays that way, even tough I'm not doing anything internet-related. This sometimes happens to me with the CPU usage. When it does, I just run a top command to find out which process is responsible and then kill it. Problem is: I have no way of knowing which process is responsible for my high network usage. Both the resource monitor and the top command only tell me my total network usage, neither of them tells me process specific network info. Is there another command I can use to find out which process is getting out of hand? I've already tried killing all the obvious ones (firefox, update-manager, pidgin, etc) with no luck. So far, restarting the machine is the only way I found of getting rid of the issue. EDIT: (just to be clear) I've found questions here about monitoring total bandwidth usage, but, as I mentioned, that's not what I need. UPDATE: The command iftop gives results that disagree entirely with the information reported by System Monitor. While the latter claims there's high network traffic, the former claims there's barely 1 KB/s. Thanks

• Platformer Collision Error [closed]

  I am currently working on a relatively simple platform game that has an odd bug.You start the game by falling onto the ground (you spawn a few blocks above the ground), but when you land your feet get stuck INSIDE the world and you can't move until you jump. Here's what I mean: The player's feet are a few pixels below the ground level. However, this problem only occurs in 3 places throughout the map and only in those 3 select places. • Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard: Locks MS Office files, but not Adobe .AI and .PSD files?

  We have some shares setup on a Windows 2003 R2 server, and the MS Office files people save behave properly: The first person to open the file gets read/write, and the second person to open the file while the first person still has the file open, gets a read-only version. This is not true for the graphics files, like Adobe Illustrator .AI files, and Photoshop .PSD files. Anyone who goes to open these files has full read/write, even if someone else is already working on the file! This has lead to numerous file corruption issues, as well as other lost work, since it always saves the last changes to the file. How do we get Windows to properly lock these files so when someone is working on a file, and someone else wants to open one, they get read-only access? Many thanks, Bruce

• C#: My World Clock

  [Placeholder:  I will post the entire project soon] I have been working on cleaning my office of 8 years of stuff from several engineers working on many projects.  It turns out that we have a few extra single board computers with displays, so at the end of the day last Friday I though why not create a little application to display the time, you know, a clock.  How difficult could that be?  It turns out that it is quite simple – until I decided to gold plate the project by adding time displays for our offices around the world. I decided to use C#, which actually made creating the main clock quite easy.   The application was simply a text box and a timer.  I set the timer to fire a couple of times a second, and when it does use a DateTime object to get the current time and retrieve a string to display. And I could have been done, but of course that gold plating came up.   Seems simple enough, simply offset the time from the local time to the location that I want the time for and display it.    Sure enough, I had the time displayed for UK, Italy, Kansas City, Japan and China in no time at all. But it is October, and for those of us still stuck with Daylight Savings Time, we know that the clocks are about to change.   My first attempt was to simply check to see if the local time was DST or Standard time, then change the offset for China.  China doesn’t have Daylight Savings Time. If you know anything about the time changes around the world, you already know that my plan is flawed – in a big way.   It turns out that the transitions in and out of DST take place at different times around the world.   If you didn’t know that, do a quick search for “Daylight Savings” and you will find many WEB sites dedicated to tracking the time changes dates, and times. Now the real challenge of this application; how do I programmatically find out when the time changes occur and handle them correctly?  After a considerable amount of research it turns out that the solution is to read the data from the registry and parse it to figure out when the time changes occur. Reading Time Change Information from the Registry Reading the data from the registry is simple, using the data is a little more complicated.  First, reading from the registry can be done like:             byte[] binarydata = (byte[])Registry.GetValue("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Time Zones\\Eastern Standard Time", "TZI", null);   Where I have hardcoded the registry key for example purposes, but in the end I will use some variables.   We now have a binary blob with the data, but it needs to be converted to use the real data.   To start we will need a couple of structs to hold the data and make it usable.   We will need a SYSTEMTIME and REG_TZI_FORMAT.   You may have expected that we would need a TIME_ZONE_INFORMATION struct, but we don’t.   The data is stored in the registry as a REG_TZI_FORMAT, which excludes some of the values found in TIME_ZONE_INFORMATION.     struct SYSTEMTIME     {         internal short wYear;         internal short wMonth;         internal short wDayOfWeek;         internal short wDay;         internal short wHour;         internal short wMinute;         internal short wSecond;         internal short wMilliseconds;     }       struct REG_TZI_FORMAT     {         internal long Bias;         internal long StdBias;         internal long DSTBias;         internal SYSTEMTIME StandardStart;         internal SYSTEMTIME DSTStart;     }   Now we need to convert the binary blob to a REG_TZI_FORMAT.   To do that I created the following helper functions:         private void BinaryToSystemTime(ref SYSTEMTIME ST, byte[] binary, int offset)         {             ST.wYear = (short)(binary[offset + 0] + (binary[offset + 1] << 8));             ST.wMonth = (short)(binary[offset + 2] + (binary[offset + 3] << 8));             ST.wDayOfWeek = (short)(binary[offset + 4] + (binary[offset + 5] << 8));             ST.wDay = (short)(binary[offset + 6] + (binary[offset + 7] << 8));             ST.wHour = (short)(binary[offset + 8] + (binary[offset + 9] << 8));             ST.wMinute = (short)(binary[offset + 10] + (binary[offset + 11] << 8));             ST.wSecond = (short)(binary[offset + 12] + (binary[offset + 13] << 8));             ST.wMilliseconds = (short)(binary[offset + 14] + (binary[offset + 15] << 8));         }             private REG_TZI_FORMAT ConvertFromBinary(byte[] binarydata)         {             REG_TZI_FORMAT RTZ = new REG_TZI_FORMAT();               RTZ.Bias = binarydata[0] + (binarydata[1] << 8) + (binarydata[2] << 16) + (binarydata[3] << 24);             RTZ.StdBias = binarydata[4] + (binarydata[5] << 8) + (binarydata[6] << 16) + (binarydata[7] << 24);             RTZ.DSTBias = binarydata[8] + (binarydata[9] << 8) + (binarydata[10] << 16) + (binarydata[11] << 24);             BinaryToSystemTime(ref RTZ.StandardStart, binarydata, 4 + 4 + 4);             BinaryToSystemTime(ref RTZ.DSTStart, binarydata, 4 + 16 + 4 + 4);               return RTZ;         }   I am the first to admit that there may be a better way to get the settings from the registry and into the REG_TXI_FORMAT, but I am not a great C# programmer which I have said before on this blog.   So sometimes I chose brute force over elegant. Now that we have the Bias information and the start date information, we can start to make sense of it.   The bias is an offset, in minutes, from local time (if already in local time for the time zone in question) to get to UTC – or as Microsoft defines it: UTC = local time + bias.  Standard bias is an offset to adjust for standard time, which I think is usually zero.   And DST bias is and offset to adjust for daylight savings time. Since we don’t have the local time for a time zone other than the one that the computer is set to, what we first need to do is convert local time to UTC, which is simple enough using:                 DateTime.Now.ToUniversalTime(); Then, since we have UTC we need to do a little math to alter the formula to: local time = UTC – bias.  In other words, we need to subtract the bias minutes. I am ahead of myself though, the standard and DST start dates really aren’t dates.   Instead they indicate the month, day of week and week number of the time change.   The dDay member of SYSTEM time will be set to the week number of the date change indicating that the change happens on the first, second… day of week of the month.  So we need to convert them to dates so that we can determine which bias to use, and when to change to a different bias.   To do that, I wrote the following function:         private DateTime SystemTimeToDateTimeStart(SYSTEMTIME Time, int Year)         {             DayOfWeek[] Days = { DayOfWeek.Sunday, DayOfWeek.Monday, DayOfWeek.Tuesday, DayOfWeek.Wednesday, DayOfWeek.Thursday, DayOfWeek.Friday, DayOfWeek.Saturday };             DateTime InfoTime = new DateTime(Year, Time.wMonth, Time.wDay == 1 ? 1 : ((Time.wDay - 1) * 7) + 1, Time.wHour, Time.wMinute, Time.wSecond, DateTimeKind.Utc);             DateTime BestGuess = InfoTime;             while (BestGuess.DayOfWeek != Days[Time.wDayOfWeek])             {                 BestGuess = BestGuess.AddDays(1);             }             return BestGuess;         }   SystemTimeToDateTimeStart gets two parameters; a SYSTEMTIME and a year.   The reason is that we will try this year and next year because we are interested in start dates that are in the future, not the past.  The function starts by getting a new Datetime with the first possible date and then looking for the correct date. Using the start dates, we can then determine the correct bias to use, and the next date that time will change:             NextTimeChange = StandardChange;             CurrentBias = TimezoneSettings.Bias + TimezoneSettings.DSTBias;             if (DSTChange.Year != 1 && StandardChange.Year != 1)             {                 if (DSTChange.CompareTo(StandardChange) < 0)                 {                     NextTimeChange = DSTChange;                     CurrentBias = TimezoneSettings.StdBias + TimezoneSettings.Bias;                 }             }             else             {                 // I don't like this, but it turns out that China Standard Time                 // has a DSTBias of -60 on every Windows system that I tested.                 // So, if no DST transitions, then just use the Bias without                 // any offset                 CurrentBias = TimezoneSettings.Bias;             }   Note that some time zones do not change time, in which case the years will remain set to 1.   Further, I found that the registry settings are actually wrong in that the DST Bias is set to -60 for China even though there is not DST in China, so I ignore the standard and DST bias for those time zones. There is one thing that I have not solved, and don’t plan to solve.  If the time zone for this computer changes, this application will not update the clock using the new time zone.  I tell  you this because you may need to deal with it – I do not because I won’t let the user get to the control panel applet to change the timezone. If not, are there any obvious pitfalls - I've not seen any other BSP's do this in the past... A: You can make a 'proper' driver that calls down into the OAL to do the actual I2C transactions. Alternatively you can build an interrupt-based version in the OAL where you handle everything in the ISR. There is nothing wrong with that so long as the rest of your drivers and app threads can handle longer times with interrupts off while you are servicing I2C interrupts. • Mac SMB connections to Windows 2003 server, leaving Open Files

  We have several Mac clients (Both 10.5, and 10.6) mounting a share from a Windows 2003 server. At least once a day, our archivist will go into this share to archive items from it, to the backup server. Most of the time, she has no issues: she copies the folder to the archive server, when it's done, she deletes it from this share. Then, she will come upon one, and it will say she doesn't have permission. When I go into the Open sessions, it will say that a particular user has a READ lock on the file, in Windows 2003. Of course, this person does not have the file open, and the only way we can delete it, is to close the open session on the file. My thoughts: The Mac likes to "sprinkle" Hidden "Resource Forks" on SMB servers, and possibly, when this Mac who last wrote to that share, closes out of the file, and these files still exist. Windows 2003 has a bug, that doesn't properly "release" the OPLOCK on the file? Steve Ballmer just doesn't like Mac's, so he wants to annoy everyone by not releasing file locks :-) What can be done about this? It happens every day, and sometimes several times per day! • How do I get started with the M-Project is a Mobile HTML5 JavaScript Framework on Windows?

  This website for this great tool, call the M-Project says that I will need to add a doskey like this: doskey espresso=node C:\Path\To\Espresso\bin\espresso.js $1 $2 $3 $4 (It is a tool for creating Native mobile apps with the Phonegap/Cordova library, and it seems to be something that would be very helpful in this process). If I enter that at a command prompt in Windows 7 or 8, it's not going to stick around or persist. Is it an Environment Variable? Then it says at this page: http://www.the-m-project.org/ that it will work with Windows with some additional tools installed. The next line says that Node.js is needed, so I don't know if that is the additional tools mentioned above. Also, in an old discussion I read that one could just install cygwin. What would that do? It doesn't actually install any of the Linux distributions. I did install Ubuntu 12.04 server with VirtualBox because I thought it would be good to learn more about using Linux as I manage websites that are on a dedicated host. Anyway, the suggestion to install cygwin did not go into any details... I guess it would allow one to create a bash profile?? which would only work in a cygwin Command Line Window. Is that right? Isn't there a similar file that one could use in Windows or an Environment Variable that one could set to be able to achieve the same result? Thanks, Bruce

  I am not strong in regex, and pretty new to Scala. I would like to be able to find a match between the first letter of a word, and one of the letters in a group such as "ABC". In pseudocode, this might look something like: case Process(word) => word.firstLetter match { case([a-c][A-C]) => case _ => } } but I don't know how to grab the first letter in Scala instead of Java, how to express the regular expression properly, nor if it's possible to do this within a case class. • How do I troubleshoot a slow hard drive?

  My computer is suffering of slow-downs and I'm not surprised (it's around 6 years old). Here's what I've verified: They are not very frequent (only a couple of times a day). When they happen a single application will hang for 10-60 seconds, while the rest don't hang but also get slow. Even as it is happening, the CPU usage stays low. It happens to applications (such as text editor, firefox, skype). It never happens to some applications (such as games) which I use for hours under heavy CPU load. Also of note: The Graphics card and PSU are new (around a year). Though I have a decent amount of software installed right now, this was happening even right after I reinstalled Windows. This HDD has been through many partinioning schemes, and a few heavy operations (such as moving around 200GB of data). Because of the above, I am already 70% sure the problem is with the hard drive. Before I replace it, however, I want to rule out other less likely possibilities (such as RAM, software, or PSU). I don't have the money to replace the entire box right now, but I can easily replace one of the components. I've read several questions (such as this one) which give general guidance on troubleshooting an unknown issue, that is not what I'm looking for here. My main question is: What tests or benchmarks can I run to verify I have a problematic hard drive? I don't need to solve this problem, I am content with just making sure it's the hard drive. I could borrow a newer hard drive from a friend and see if it gets better. A positive result would rule out all other components, but it wouldn't rule out a software issue (since this new hard drive won't have any of the software I use daily). Running on Windows/Linux.

• How to recover Virtual Machines in Virtualbox?

  For some reason, all of a sudden, all virtual machines are gone from the User Interface in virtual box. I suspect CCleaner has something to do with it, but that's not the point. Both the virtual hardisks and the .xml files for the machines are still in their respective folders. How can I use them to get my virtual machines back into virtualbox? I tried simply creating a new machine from the old virtual hardisks, and it worked with the ubuntu guest, but not with the windows one. Plus, it'd be nice to get my old machines back instead of having to create new ones, that would keep me from having to fix some shortcuts as well as reconfigure shared folders and other stuff. • External optical drive won't plug 'n play...sometimes.

  alright, I've looked a lot of different ways, but here goes. i have an external DVD burner that connects via USB and should be plug 'n play however sometimes when I connect it a message pops up requesting any CD or installation software it came with. It didn't come with any though. The confusing part is that if I wait a couple weeks and plug it in, then it works fine, but if I turn it off and back on the problem arises again. I've tried different computers, same problem. There's little to no customer support from the company, Ativa, and no drivers for the product. I'm hoping there's a registry trick for this. any help?

• Can you disable the light up buttons on the HP HDX series laptops?

I cant help but think how distracting they would be if you were watching a film on it. So does anyone know if its possible to turn these lights off? • Number Tabs in Chrome or Firefox

  I like to use the Ctrl or Alt + Number shorcut to jump quickly to a specific tab. Problem is: When you have a lot of tabs open it is hard to look at them and quickly know which one is tab number 7. Is there a way (extension possibly) to show a tab's number in its title? This way each tab would have a number added to its title right beside the favicon. This way you could immediately tell which number you need to press to jump to a specific tab. I use both Chromium and Firefox, so I'm accepting answers for either one (though I'd prefer both =) ).

• How to require a cell input if another cell has a value

  I'm trying to edit the VBA for one of my workbooks so that If there is a value in column A, then a value for column C is required or else the file won't save, but i'm having some trouble with this. I can get excel to check a cell for any input and require it have input, but I need it to check if a different cell has an input before requiring input. This is because not all of the lines in my spreadsheet will be used all of the time, but some people forget to put very important pieces of information in the spreadsheet which throws some of our balances off. An SKU is entered on the sheet when we switch to a new one, and I want the program to make sure there is an amount of product in a given cell every time a new SKU is entered onto the sheet. Thanks.
