  • How to autorun wpa_supplicant on Debian startup

    - by The Electric Muffin
I'd like to run wpa_supplicant -D wext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf on Debian startup (runlevels 2-5). I found some vague instructions from a related question that said to put a script in /etc/init.d/ and then symlink to it from the apropriate /etc/rcRUNLEVEL.d/ directories. However, I noticed that there are already some files named "wpasupplicant" that probably run at startup: /etc/network/if-down.d/wpasupplicant /etc/network/if-post-down.d/wpasupplicant /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/wpasupplicant /etc/network/if-up.d/wpasupplicant They all are symlinks to the same script, /etc/wpa_supplicant/ifupdown.sh. It has a comment at the beginning saying it "[...] allows ifup(8), and ifdown(8) to manage wpa_supplicant(8) and wpa_cli(8) processes running in daemon mode." However, the closest it gets to calling wpa_supplicant itself is (in functions.sh): WPA_SUP_BIN="/sbin/wpa_supplicant" [snip] start-stop-daemon --start --oknodo $DAEMON_VERBOSITY \ --name $WPA_SUP_PNAME --startas $WPA_SUP_BIN --pidfile $WPA_SUP_PIDFILE \ -- $WPA_SUP_OPTIONS $WPA_SUP_CONF [snip] start-stop-daemon --stop --oknodo $DAEMON_VERBOSITY \ --exec $WPA_SUP_BIN --pidfile $WPA_SUP_PIDFILE Does that mean it's safe to make an init.d script for wpa_supplicant, and if so what would it look like? General info: Debian Squeeze (5.0) official wpasupplicant package (v0.6.10-2.1) The full contents of my system's functions.sh and ifupdown.sh are here (dependent, of course, on my system's uptime—it's a five-year-old laptop that greatly enjoys overheating): functions.sh ifupdown.sh

  • Disable ipv6 support completely on debian squeeze 6.0.5

    - by markus
I want to disable ipv6 support completely on debian squeeze 6.0.5. In many other posts I have seen setting the parameter net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1 in /etc/sysctl.conf should disable it. I've set that parameter and rebooted, but netstat -natp shows me that the ntp deamon is still using ipv6: udp6 0 0 :::123 :::* 0 7983 3138/ntpd Is there anything else I need to configure?

  • Lenovo L440 won't boot into Debian installation CD or Debian-installed HDD

    - by Spencer B Liberto
I have a Lenovo L440 and a Lenovo X61. I want to install Debian Wheezy on thee L440. This morning, the L440 could successfully boot into Windows 8 from it's hard drive. I created an installation of Wheezy on a USB flash drive with Unetbootin. I created an installation CD of Wheezy with Unetbootin. The X61 can successfully boot into the flash drive. The X61 does not have a CD drive. I have attempted to boot from the live CD and the flash drive from the L440's boot menu. In both cases, the screen fades to black, and then returns me to the boot menu with no error message. I removed the L440's hard drive, and installed it in the X61. I then successfully installed Wheezy onto the hard drive from the flash drive. I'm able to boot into the Wheezy hard drive on the L440. After replacing the hard drive into the L440. I booted from the hard drive from the boot menu. Once again, the screen fades to black, and then returns me to the boot menu with no error message. What's the deal?

  • Install system-wide PEAR on Debian Lenny

    - by artvolk
Good day! I've installed PEAR on Debian Lenny using apt-get install php-pear, it was installed in /usr/share/php When I try to install anything using pear install <package> the PEAR folder is created under current user home directory and separate copy of pear is installed there. I ended up by installing local copy of PEAR for one of the users like this: http://kuziel.info/log/archives/2006/04/01/Installation-of-local-PEAR-repository Is any way to tell pear to install packages to system-wide repository in /usr/share/php? What is the recommended way of using system-wide PEAR copy? Thanks in advance!

  • Guestfish not found on Debian 7 when execute virt-copy-in [on hold]

    - by John Wang
When I execute virt-copy-in command on a kvm host(Debian7.1), I got error saying "guestfish not found". However according to the dpkg comamnd, guestfish do have been installed: john@sver:~$ dpkg-query -l | grep guestfs* ii libguestfs-perl ... ii libguestfs-tools ... ii libguestfs0 ... What's the problem? Is the libguestfs-tools not the guestfish in Debian? Or it's just a broken dependency in libguestfs-tools in Debian7.1(my KVM Host)?

  • Bootstrap a debian build environment and build source packages with no root privileges

    - by Erwan Queffélec
On debian squeeze, I am trying to do the following : fetch sources package from the wheezy source repository bootstrap a squeeze chroot for several architectures build the packages for several architectures (i386, amd64 + all and any) I want both the fetching, bootstrapping and build operation to be scriptable, repeatable, and run as a normal user. For the environment setup, I want to make as little use of the root account as possible (install the necessary dependencies, and maybe some visudo stuff). If possible I would like to avoid using a VM (pbuilder with user mode linux) So far I have tried several things with pbuilder (require root), debootstrap (require root) with little success. Here is an example script of what I want to do (does not work): #/bin/bash set -e set -x this=`readlink -f $0` this_dir=`dirname $this` archs='i386 amd64 any all' pushd $this_dir/src # I actually want the following line to work with a repo that # is not in /etc/apt/sources.list but that is another question apt-get source cyrus-imapd-2.4 popd for arch in $archs do build_dir=$this_dir/build/$arch/ pbuilder --create --configfile $build_dir/pbuilderrc --buildresult $build_dir/ pbuilder --build --configfile $build_dir/pbuilderrc --buildresult \ $build_dir/ $this_dir/src/*.dsc # of course I want to use the .dput.cf in /home/myuser/ # and not in /root/ dput $build_dir/$arch/*.changes done

  • Use apt-get source on a debian repo without using /etc/apt/source.list

    - by Erwan Queffélec
I'm trying to use apt-get source as a regular user on a debian squeeze system. I want to retrieve the sources for cyrus-imapd-2.4 from the testing/wheezy repository. apt-get source works without root privileges; however, it seems there is no way to get apt-get to fetch anything from a repository that is not in /etc/apt/sources.list. Is there any command line option, alternate sources.list file, environment variable that will get apt to work with a custom repository ? I do have root access so I could change the /etc/apt/sources.list, however I really do not want to do that for a number of reason.

  • Debian date jumping, causing complete lockup

    - by artfulrobot
I have a Debian Squeeze VM that has suddenly chosen to jump it's date forwards just over a month, which seems to confuse it no end and cause it to require a hard reset (yikes!). There is nothing unusual in the logs, except that the datestamp suddenly jumps (today back to 2005). It's happened three times, so I don't think it's to do with the leap second issue as the last one of those was in July. When it happened once I spent ages checking stuff but could not find anything, decided to forget it. But three times is becoming an issue on a production server. Edits providing information requested in comments (thanks!): I do not have control over the hypervisor, it is a hired VM. # cat /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/current_clocksource kvm-clock # ntpq -p remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter ============================================================================== +grendel.exizten 130.149.17.8 2 u 29 64 77 14.811 1.778 1.744 *panoramix.linoc 193.67.79.202 2 u 32 64 77 19.729 -0.419 1.691 +robert.elnounch 213.251.128.249 2 u 27 64 77 17.762 0.600 1.722 -janetzki.eu 83.169.43.165 3 u 31 64 77 27.214 3.575 1.638

  • how to customize debian installation cd for your needs

    - by Frank
I have with me a Debian CD, which I want to customize for my own needs. I have extracted the CD and started to change some parts of it, e.g Splash screen (splash.png) installer Title (through isolinux.cfg) etc These are the things that I want to do: Change the Splash logo at start up of installation to have my own (which is done) Change the grub boot parameters to use my comapny name on it. Change the set of packages in it, so that I can have my own set of packages in it and only those packages are installed Do some post installation steps Customize it's startup and login screen to have my company name. After I am done with this customization, I need to build its live installer CD so that I can install it on my own, on any other system.

  • Debian virtual server hangs on reboot, need help debugging

    - by BubuIIC
I'm admin of a Debian 6 virtual server. I've been trying to diagnose this problem for a while but haven't gotten anything. The server hangs every time I want to reboot it. All services seem to be shutting down, I lose ssh connection. Then nothing. I have to restart it through the hoster's web-interface, which just gives me the options "Normal Boot" and "Rescue System". Normal boot then brings the server back to life. Possibly (probably?) related, the server does not boot into a newer kernel version, it's running 2.6.18 right now, but installed is actually 2.6.32. I don't know whether it hangs on shutdown or on startup, but booting through the web-interface works (except the kernel part). Am I missing something obvious? Where should I start looking? I have no idea how to diagnose the problem.

  • Debian Lenny to Debian Squeeze upgrade problems

    - by Roland Soós
Hi! Yesterday I made a dist-upgrade on my Debian Lenny server. I thought it will be easy as an usual upgrade, but it's not. I got a lot of problem after the update: # apt-get upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... • Apache2 VirtualHost on Debian not working

    - by milo5b
I am having some problems with Apache2 configuration. I have already tried to look for documentation on the web (Apache's site, Debian's site, here on serverfault, etc), but nothing really helps. I have tried different configurations, but my current configuration is the following (/etc/apache2/sites-available/default): <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin [email protected] ServerName mysite.dev ServerAlias mysite.dev DocumentRoot /var/www/mysite.dev/httpdocs/ ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log LogLevel warn CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin [email protected] ServerName livesite.com ServerAlias www.livesite.com DocumentRoot /var/www/livesite.com/httpdocs/ <Directory /var/www/livesite.com/httpdocs/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow, deny allow from all </Directory> ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log LogLevel warn CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined </VirtualHost> mysite.dev it's just an entry in hosts file on my client machine, while livesite.com it's an actual DNS record which would resolve to the same IP as the IP set in hosts file for mysite.dev. The problem is that when i try to type mysite.dev in my browser, it would automatically go to livesite.com. I tried to have different /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ files (/etc/apache2/sites-enabled/mysite.dev , /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/livesite.com ) - and of course with the actual sites-available related files, but achieving the same results. I have tried to have a peak on error.log and access.log but there's nothing I can see. My httpd.conf contains: AccessFileName .htaccess And I have no /etc/apache2/conf.d/virtual.conf file. Any help would be greatly appreciated - if I did not provide enough info please let me know I will do my best to provide all necessary info. Thanks

  • Default IPv6 route on debian squeeze does not come up after boot

    - by Georg Bretschneider
I have a problem with my default IPv6 route not coming up after boot on a Debian Squeeze system. This is my config (/etc/network/interfaces): # Loopback device: auto lo iface lo inet loopback iface lo inet6 loopback # device: br0 auto br0 iface br0 inet static bridge_ports eth0 bridge_fd 0 address 88.198.62.xx broadcast 88.198.62.63 netmask 255.255.255.224 gateway 88.198.62.33 up route add -net 88.198.62.32 netmask 255.255.255.224 gw 88.198.62.33 br0 iface br0 inet6 static address 2a01:4f8:131:10x::2 netmask 64 gateway 2a01:4f8:131:100::1 up route -A inet6 add 2a01:4f8:131:100::1/59 dev br0 My inet comes up alright, but I have to exec the route command manually after boot to make IPv6 work. Otherwise I can't even reach my gateway. This is the output of ip -6 route show after boot: 2a01:4f8:131:10x::/64 dev br0 proto kernel metric 256 mtu 1500 advmss 1440 hoplimit 4294967295 unreachable fe80::/64 dev lo proto kernel metric 256 error -101 mtu 16436 advmss 16376 hoplimit 4294967295 fe80::/64 dev br0 proto kernel metric 256 mtu 1500 advmss 1440 hoplimit 4294967295 fe80::/64 dev eth0 proto kernel metric 256 mtu 1500 advmss 1440 hoplimit 4294967295 I already tried it with: up ip -6 route add 2a01:4f8:131:100::1 dev br0 up ip -6 route add default via 2a01:4f8:131:100::1 dev br0 in /etc/network/interfaces, but with the same results. If I execute those commands manually on my shell, everything starts working nicely. And yes, I tried with post-up instead of up, too. Only other changes I made was to activate ip forwarding for IPv6, because I want to run some LXC containers on that system.

  • Package pinning in Debian lenny

    - by bronto
I need your advice as I don't know if I hit a bug, or I am misunderstanding something. On a Debian Lenny, I am trying to prevent the installation of two particular packages, when they are requested as dependencies fromother packages. I am using the same syntax I successfully used in Squeeze, but with no success at all. On squeeze, the following works as expected: # cat /etc/apt/preferences.d/local-no-pike.pref Package: pike7.6-core Pin: version * Pin-Priority: -1000 If I try to install pike7.6, which depends on pike7.6-core, apt and aptitude refuse to do so. On Lenny, the only difference is that there is no support for "fragments" in /etc/apt/preferences.d, and all preferences must be in the /etc/apt/preferences file. But it's not working. E.g., if the file contains: Package: grub-common Pin: version * Pin-Priority: -1000 apt doesn't stop me from installing grub, which depends on grub-common. I used strace to see if the file is being read, and it is. I was suggested to use some Debug:: options, but they didn't help to pinpoint the problem either. I have google'd a lot with some combinations of "lenny" "prevent" "package" "installation" "pinning" and the like, but nothing nice came out. And of course I read man apt_preferences. What am I missing here?

  • sudo in Debian squeeze inside linux-vserver always wants password

    Every since I upgraded all my linux-vserver Debian guests from Lenny to Squeeze I've the apparent problem that whenever I want to use sudo it asks me for my password. Every time. I've configured sudo to have a timeout of 30 minutes: Defaults timestamp_timeout=30 . This has been configured when it was still Lenny (note: as suggested by EightBitTony I've also tried without this setting - no change). I've a hard time figuring out what the problem here is, since I think my configuration is right. I thought about it being a problem with the file used to record the timestamp, maybe a permission issue, but was unlucky to find any hard evidence. I've compared the contents of /var/lib/sudo/ between a working and a non-working system but couldn't spot any difference. The version of sudo used in both environments is 1.7.4p4-2.squeeze.3. My non-working system(s): find /var/lib/sudo/ -ls 17319289 4 drwx------ 4 root root 4096 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/ 17319286 4 drwx------ 2 root mark 4096 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark 17319312 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/6 17319361 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/9 17319490 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/10 17319326 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/4 17319491 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/2 A working system: find /var/lib/sudo -ls 2598921 4 drwx------ 5 root root 4096 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo 1999522 4 drwx------ 2 root mark 4096 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark 2000781 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/8 1998998 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/17 1999459 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/26 1998930 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/24 2000771 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jun 25 11:39 /var/lib/sudo/mark/4 2000773 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/5 1999223 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/0 1998908 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/14 2000769 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jul 9 13:30 /var/lib/sudo/mark/2 2000770 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/3 2000782 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/9 2000778 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jul 8 00:11 /var/lib/sudo/mark/7 1998892 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/19 1999264 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/23 2000789 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/12 1999093 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/25 1998880 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/18 1998853 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/20 2000790 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/15 1998878 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/16 1998874 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/13 2000774 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/6 2000786 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/11 1998893 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/22 2000783 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/10 1998949 4 -rw------- 1 root mark 40 Jan 1 1985 /var/lib/sudo/mark/1 Despite the obvious (some up2date timestamps on the working system) I don't see anything wrong here, so it could be as well be a wrong track. • Logitech USB headphones detected and selected in Debian Squeeze but sound still coming from speakers

    - by mattalexx
I have a pair of Logitech wireless USB headphones that work with Ubuntu Natty but aren't working in Debian Squeeze. When they are selected as the default audio output, the sound comes out of the speakers instead of the headphones. I have rebooted and tried using a different USB port. My computer is a Thinkpad T510. How can I fix this problem? Here is lsusb: Bus 002 Device 005: ID 046d:0a29 Logitech, Inc. Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:0020 Intel Corp. Then I change it to "Output: ALSA Audio output" and a Device menu appears. I select the headphones. When I then save the prefs, the audio switch to the headphones! But here's what's weird: I go back to prefs, change it to "Output: Default" and the headphones keep working. Maybe the ALSA option is actually what is being chosen as the "Default" option, but the Device menu (whose selection is still being used) is still set to the headphones. Anyway, now I need to figure out how to make it work as the default for the whole system.

  • Debian dependency problems / partially installed

    - by Michael
I tried to install curl support for php 5 on my debian squeeze machine and since I'm having problems. After trying to install curl I got dependency issues which I tried to solve by removing what started the issues. From one thing came another and I'm currently looking at ~29 issues when I try to do an apt-get upgrade. These issues vary from unable to config, dependency and unable to remove errors. I tried apt-get upgrade -f and installing packages using dpkg command. I tried removing using purge and force. I manually removed stuff to try and fix it. I tried running dpkg --configure -a. I've to say I'm still pretty new to linux so I'm out of idea's and cant seem to find an answer online that matches my problems. Here's a part of the apt-get upgrade command output: Reading package lists... Building dependency tree... • LTS vs normal release software versions synced from Debian

    - by Jasper Loy
I read that LTS releases are based on Debian testing while normal releases are based on Debian unstable. Given the long release cycle of Debian, is it possible for some software to be of a more recent version in a normal release X than in LTS release X+1? If the answer is yes, would there be a difference between an upgrade and a fresh install (perhaps upgrade holds back more recent version automatically)?
