• Multithreaded UI desktop application issues

  I am involved into development a rich UI project: desktop windows application. Application uses asynchronous invocations and in its turn it should be ready to process external messages (events). The problem is clear: at first time it was built as a simple prototype and it was not stress tested and all was fine. Then application was grown: the number of calls to server and number of events from server are high and performance is low. What is more users noticed that sometimes performance is extremal low. Asynchronous invocations based on thread pool (BeginInvoke, EndInvoke), external events are going from WCF service (.NET 3.5). My goal is synchronization of all tasks and putting priorities to every executions in desktop application. My question is: is there any practice how to reach my goal: patterns, task priority list, others? What should I do at first, second and next times? Thanks

• Microsoft Terminology: .NET C++ vs. traditional C++

  I've recently been working with a team that's using both .NET C++ and pre-.NET C++. I fully understand the technical differences between the two technologies. However, I sometimes feel like I'm floundering when it comes to the terminology used to differentiate the two. Example: Say we have two projects: ProjectA contains "C++" code that builds a .NET assembly DLL. ProjectB contains Visual C++ code that builds a traditional native Windows DLL. What is the best way to succinctly and terminologically draw a distinction between the two projects? Again, I'm not asking for an in-depth technical description of the differences between the two technologies. I'm just looking for names and labels. This is how, today, I might try to make the distinction when talking to someone: "ProjectA is a managed .NET C++ project" and "ProjectB is an unmanaged native C++ DLL project." However I am not at all certain that this terminology is ideal, or even correct. Please describe what you feel the ideal language to use in this situation (or similar situations) might be. Feel free to motivate your answer.

• Visual Studio 2012 - Setting the target framework in C++ Projects

  The Visual Studio 2012 doesn’t have a UI to set the Target Framework in C++ Projects.     Target Framework : 4.0   The online documentation does say to edit the .vcxproj project and change the TargetFrameworkVersion Tag. However, The C++ projects don’t have that tag by default. They just assume that the target framework is v4.0.   Instead, you have to add the TargetFrameworkVersion-Tag to the PropertyGroup Globals.   1: <PropertyGroup Label="Globals"> 2: ... 3: <RootNamespace>...</RootNamespace> 4: <TargetFrameworkVersion>v4.5</TargetFrameworkVersion> 5: </PropertyGroup>   When you reload the project, the target framework version in your project will be changed. • Downloading large files hangs system

  When Im trying to download large files, i.e. 1gb or more under FireFox, first of all it starts with very big download speed and in few seconds in almost get up to max (~11 MBps). It is downloading very fast, but when downloaded size becomes near 700-800mb and more, my system almost completely hangs, so I can do nothing - I just have to wait until it finishes downloading. Also when it hangs, I can't see the download progress - it looks like it completely hangs. Sometimes, however, if the file size is near 1gb, the system comes back from hang, finishing download, but sometimes I just cant wait before system comes back and have to kill FF from top (it takes me 2 minutes to do this, because of very slow system performance). I use Firefox as primary browser. If I use wget with direct link to file - everything is fine. Speed at max, no performance decrease. So what can I do?

• Bash does not remember programs with non 0 exit status in history

  I enter a command. It fails. I press arrow up, modify something and enter it again ... hold it right there. It used to work like that. Now it's more like: I enter a command. It fails. I press arrow up, get the last command which didn't fail, likely "ls" or something useless and I type the whole thing again back by hand. What happened? It wasn't always like this. But it's quite some time since this behavior changed, I'll give you that. Some years ago, at least. How do I put some sanity back into my bash prompt?

• How do I configure Ubuntu's web applications? [closed]

  Ubuntu 12.10 has introduced among other things web applications that add launcher widgets to show, for example, unread Gmail message counts, twitter tweets, etc. While sites that support those widgets show notifications offering to install them, I can't seem to find how to configure them. I'm particularly interested in configuring Google mail desktop notification widget to only display unread counts for my inbox, and dismiss all other labels.

• Is it legal and ethical to reverse engineer software to port it to another system?

  I love gaming, I love games that allow modding and I love linux. But the fact that most games right now are targeted for windows (consoles aside), most mods and modding tools are also targeted for windows. There is a certain modder called Boris Vorontsov that makes a famous visual overhaul mod series called ENB. What he does (or I think he does) is he enhances or changes the behavior of classes defined in the d3d9.dll library. Needless to say it almost never works under wine. Recently I have asked him if he would ever release his version of the library under some open license, and he said "no". Now that I think of it, even if he did release his code, he would have surely faced some legal problems. Now there is my question. Is it legal and ethical to reverse engineer his version of the library to adapt the wine's open source version of d3d9.dll to be able to run his mods?

• How to price code reviews to encourage good behavior?

  I work for a company that has a hosted .net internet application with many clients. Those clients often want to write customizations for our application. We have APIs to hook into the app, but the customizations themselves are written in .net. This is a shared, secure hosting environment and we have to code review these customizations before we can deploy them in our datacenter to ensure that they don't degrade performance, crash our servers, or open any security vulnerabilities. We charge for these code reviews. The current pricing model is simply a function of the number of lines of code. I think this is a bad idea for a variety of reasons, but primarily because, if we are interested in verifying that the code works as expected, we should be incentivizing good, readable code, not compaction. I would like to propose a pricing model that incorporates some, or all of the following as inputs: Lines of code Cyclomatic complexity Avg function length # of functions Are there any other metrics I should incorporate, or other ideas for how we can reasonably create pricing for code reviews that encourages safe and understandable code?

• Success Quote: A Hybrid Approach for Success

  We recently received this quote from a project that successfully used OUM: “On our project, we applied a combination of the Oracle Unified Method (OUM) and the client's methodology. The project was organized by OUM's phases and a subset of OUM's processes, tasks, and templates. Using a hybrid of the two methods resulted in an implementation approach that was optimized for the client-specific requirements for this project." This hybrid approach is an excellent example of using OUM in the flexible and scalable manner in which it was intended. The project team was able to scale OUM to be fit-for-purpose for their given situation. It's great to see how merging what was needed out of OUM with the client’s methodology resulted in an implementation approach that more closely aligned to the business needs. Successfully scaling OUM is dependent on the needs of the particular project and/or engagement. The key is to use no more than is necessary to satisfy the requirements of the implementation and appropriately address risks. • How do I know if my system is capable of playing 24bit/96kHz sound?

  Let me state for the record that I'm a total noob when it comes to Hi-Fi sound systems, but I am rather picky about the sound quality. Normally I listen to CD recordings ripped to FLAC in 16/44, but I have several albums that are also ripped from vinyls to FLAC in 24/96. But it seems that I can't tell the difference between 16-bit and 24-bit versions (except for some vinyl noises, of course). That can be due to several reasons: my equipment (onboard audio, monitor headphones) isn't good enough to make any difference, my system is not playing audio in 24-bit 96 kHz, I am physically unable to hear the difference. So here is my question, how do I tell if my system can play 24-bit sound with 96 or 192 kHz resolution? And if it can, how do I tell that it plays it instead of downsampling to 16-bit / 44 kHz? Also, what hardware (audio cards, amplifiers, etc.) would you recommend to play such recordings on Ubuntu?

• Fans are noisy and battery life is low

  I worked on Windows 8 previosly and I never had problems: my laptop was quiet and battery life was about 5-6 hours without charge. Then I installed Ubuntu 12.10 and my problems started: now fans are always on and have very strong noise and battery life shortened to 1-1.5 hour! How can I solve this problem? • Question about separating game core engine from game graphics engine...

  Suppose I have a SquareObject class, which implements IDrawable, an interface which contains the method void Draw(). I want to separate drawing logic itself from the game core engine. My main idea is to create a static class which is responsible to dispatch actions to the graphic engine. public static class DrawDispatcher<T> { private static Action<T> DrawAction = new Action<T>((ObjectToDraw)=>{}); public static void SetDrawAction(Action<T> action) { DrawAction = action; } public static void Dispatch(this T Obj) { DrawAction(Obj); } } public static class Extensions { public static void DispatchDraw<T>(this object Obj) { DrawDispatcher<T>.DispatchDraw((T)Obj); } } Then, on the core side: public class SquareObject: GameObject, IDrawable { #region Interface public void Draw() { this.DispatchDraw<SquareObject>(); } #endregion } And on the graphics side: public static class SquareRender{ //stuff here public static void Initialize(){ DrawDispatcher<SquareObject>.SetDrawAction((Square)=>{//my square rendering logic}); } } Do this "pattern" follow best practices? • Migrate 12.04 Wubi install to new partition with corrupted win7 install and small hard drive

  The move from Win7 to Ubuntu 12.04 has been honestly awesome. But I've come into a snag because my Win7 inevitably broke. I can still boot into Ubuntu even though Win7 is broken (won't boot, can't repair). I'd like to Migrate Wubi to a real partition and forget about windows. Presumably under normal conditions I would run the Ubuntu live CD, create a new partition then log back into my Wubi install and migrate using the script to the new partition. But I'm worried if I do that I'll break my current wubi set-up and be unable to migrate. I have a small hard drive, only 75GB and unfortunately my backup drive recently died so can't migrate there first and transfer over either. Does anybody have any suggestions to solve this?

• What are the common mistakes in 'tailored Scrum approaches'?

  I have seen this before. Management wants to be agile and be scrummified, but does not want to step out of the status quo. My latest observation is no different; here, the Scrum is 'tailored' to the organization; specifically into a weird many-people-process. The diagram showing the different participants. I am putting together a document listing why this will not work. Here are the obvious ones: 1. There are product owner agents (an obvious WTF), who report to the product owner: causing dilution of decision making capability 2. There is a role that looks similar to a manager in the traditional approach - development manager: an obvious attempt at command-and-control model 3. The ScrumMaster's role includes collecting timesheets, which are used to track progress instead of burndown charts: detrimental to agile's efforts to build teams with motivated individuals Leaving the question "how would you convince the management?", my question is more at, "what else do you see as failures in this/similar 'tailored Scrum approaches'? EDIT: The diagram might use a few more details 1. The development manager is not part of the development team, with not very clearly defined responsibilities, except: developer performance assessemnt, recruitment, etc., 2. There are more than two teams (with ScrumMaster+development manager+dev team) with the same product owner for all teams!
