• How do I remove the Refresh button from the Address toolbar?

  I like being able to run commands straight from my Task Bar. So, I've enabled the Address toolbar on my new Windows 7 system - just like I had on my old XP system. However, the bar seems to have a mandatory minimum length (I've posted a separate question about that) that's a bit longer than I'd prefer. Additionally, a bit more horizontal space is consumed by a Refresh button at the end of it. This Refresh button appears similar to the Go button that used to show by default in older versions. That button was easily removed by changing a registry value that doesn't seem to exist in Windows 7. Is there a similar registry hack I can use to remove the new Refresh button?

• Is there a way to sort digits within a cell?

  I'd like to know if there's an Excel Function, or a formula, that can be used to sort digits within a cell. For example, if the value of A1 is 6193254807 and B1 has our formula with parameters set to sort ascending then B1 should equal 0123456789 (leading zero included). Of course, if the parameters were set so that it would sort descending then B1 should equal 9876543210. Is there a way to do this, without wandering into VBScript, or macros, or something similarly exotic?

• Is there a way to disable specific Spybot Immunization rules?

  I've been having problems using a desktop sharing application, which I've traced to the Immunization protections applied via Spybot S&D. Specifically, the problem has been narrowed down to the rules in the \SOFTWARE (Plugins) categories under the Internet Explorer groups. Once I disable these Immunization categories, everything in the application works fine. Each of these categories appears to include ~900 protections on the system. I suspect that the root cause of my problems could be narrowed down to just one, or perhaps a handful, of the settings that get applied in these categories. However, I can't find any options in Spybot S&D which would allow me to drill down to the individual protection rules and choose which to enable or disable. Is there something I'm missing, or is this not a feature available via the GUI? If it's not strictly supported in the application, is there a way to work around it by manually editing some of its files or registry settings? • Why does BitLocker need a minimum volume size of 64 MB?

  Since the future of TrueCrypt appears to be still unclear, I figured I'd try to get my stuff migrated into BitLocker at least for the time being. I nearly never have to access my encrypted data from anything that's not BitLocker-capable, so cross-platform compatibility isn't a big deal to me at this time. However, I am having a bit of an issue understanding the minimum requirement of a 64 MB volume. With TrueCrypt, I was able to protect small files (and most of my protected files are fairly small) in containers down to 300 KB or even less. When I finally created a VHD of an appropriate size last night (100 MB), it seemed the file system itself only took up about 3 MB and encrypting it with BitLocker didn't appear to take up any more. While 3 MB is still an order of magnitude larger than the smallest volume I could make with TrueCrypt, it's still relatively reasonable in comparison to 64 MB. This is an especially large amount of overhead (and largely wasted at that, since it's mostly empty space for now) when I consider that some of these volumes will be stored and synced in the cloud. • How do I change the Admin password on a Ubee DVW3201B?

  I must admit that I feel rather foolish having to ask this. I recently switched ISPs, and the new one gave us a Ubee DVW3201B as our home gateway. I want to change the Administrator username/password from the defaults, but I've been having some difficulty. Every time, after I save the new username and password, I'm prompted to re-authenticate to the administration interface. It fails no matter what I try. I've tried using: New username / New password Default username / New password Default username / Default password None of the above works. This has happened twice now, with my only recourse after failure being to do a reset to factory defaults (press and hold the hard reset button for 10 seconds). Is there something I'm missing?

• Google Drive terminates without error on startup

  I've used Google Drive for awhile now, but it won't start up after installing on my latest system re-build. I'm still using the same OS, hardware, and basic software load (antivirus, firewall, etc.) that I have for years during which I had not previously had problems with Drive. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Google Drive Version: 1.12.5329.1887 Now, whenever I try to run Google Drive, it just spawns two instances of the executable which die shortly after. No error messages are posted to the desktop, and nothing indicating any problem is written to the Event Log. After some research, I've yet to find anyone having the same problem who's found an answer. I did find out how to run Google Drive in diagnostic mode, using the --vv parameter at the command line. • How can I create a separate toolbar from the Task Bar?

  In Windows XP, you could separate toolbars from the Task Bar by dragging them to the desktop. They could then be left lying about anywhere on your screen or, my preferred option, docked to any side of the screen. I found this particularly useful to keep a handy list of common phone numbers quickly accessible. I'd create a new toolbar pointing to a custom folder, and put a bunch of dead shortcuts in the folder that had names and numbers as their file names. I'd then dock the toolbar to the left side, set it to auto-hide and always on top (options which could be set separate from the Task Bar as well) and it would be readily available no matter what else I was doing on my system. However, on my Windows 7 system, I seem unable to perform the crucial step of pulling the new toolbar off of the Task Bar. This is of course with the Task Bar "unlocked" so that I can move all my toolbars around. Is there something I'm missing here, or is this a feature that's been disabled in Windows 7? Is there any way to re-enable it, or otherwise achieve similar functionality? I'd rather be able to do this without additional software, if possible.

• Is there a way to have "default" or "placeholder" values in Excel?

  I've got a spreadsheet with cells that I want to be user-editable, but that I also want to have "default" or "placeholder" values in, whenever there is no user-entered data. There's a couple good use cases for this: Prevent formula errors, while providing reasonable assumptions when a user has not entered (or has deleted) their own value. I could use conditional formatting to alert the user to default values, so as to prevent their ignorance of them - they can then make an informed choice as to whether that value is still appropriate or not for the intended calculations. Give a short description of what is intended to be entered in the cell, without having to have a separate "instructions" segment or document. This would also eliminate the need for a nearby "Label" cell, in some cases where it's really not appropriate. To accomplish what I want, I need some formula, script, or other advanced spreadsheet option that will do the following: Show the default value in the cell before user enters data. Allow the default value to be found by any formulas referencing the cell, when there is no user-entered data in that cell. Allow the user to freely (naturally, exactly as they would do with any "normal" cell) overwrite the displayed value with their own value or formula, and have the user-entered data found by any formulas referencing the cell. When cell is blanked by deletion of user input, revert to default value. Is there a way to do this in Excel, or am I asking too much of a spreadsheet program here?

• Java threads, wait time always 00:00:00-Producer/Consumer

  I am currently doing a producer consumer problem with a number of threads and have had to set priorities and waits to them to ensure that one thread, the security thread, runs last. I have managed to do this and I have managed to get the buffer working. The last thing that I am required to do is to show the wait time of threads that are too large for the buffer and to calculate the average wait time. I have included code to do so, but everything I run the program, the wait time is always returned as 00:00:00, and by extension, the average is returned as the same. I was speaking to one of my colleagues who said that it is not a matter of the code but rather a matter of the computer needing to work off of one processor, which can be adjusted in the task manager settings. He has an HP like myself but his program prints the wait time 180 times, whereas mine prints usually about 3-7 times and is only 00:00:01 on one instance before finishing when I have made the processor adjustments. My other colleague has an iMac and hers puts out an average of 42:00:34(42 minutes??) I am very confused about this because I can see no difference between our codes and like my colleague said, I was wondering is it a computer issue. I am obviously concerned as I wanted to make sure that my code correctly calculated an average wait time, but that is impossible to tell when the wait times always show as 00:00:00. To calculate the thread duration, including the time it entered and exited the buffer was done by using a timestamp import, and then subtracting start time from end time. Is my code correct for this issue or is there something which is missing? I would be very grateful for any solutions. • MySQL - Why would SHOW SLAVE HOSTS cause a binlog dump?

  We're getting loads of binlog files in our MySQL 5.0.x. We have a normal master/slave replication thing going with 1 master, 1 slave. Looking at /var/log/mysql.log, nearly 90% of the time the replicator connects and does a SHOW SLAVE HOSTS causes a bin log dump. For example: 7020 Query SHOW SLAVE HOSTS 7020 Binlog Dump Log: 'mysql-bin.029634' Pos: 13273 However when I do a SHOW SLAVE HOSTS on the mysql myself, I get no results. Occasionally when the replicator does a SHOW SLAVE HOSTS, mysql will hang for hours. I see nothing in the /var/log/syslog at the same time... What's going on here? How can I debug this more? For the record the MySQL master and slave servers are ubuntu dapper.

• Postfix - How to alias some [email protected] to another user, but only for certain values of "host.com"

  I have a Postfix email setup. It's handle a few domains (i.e. I have them in my mynetworks in my main.cf). I have a normal unix account and use that to log in, and get my mail. My personal email account is of the form [email protected]. I have a new domain new.com, and I want to forward [email protected] to [email protected], however I don't want to forward [email protected]. Someone has suggested just forwarding all 'info' to 'user', and then using procmail on my user@ account to remove the [email protected] The server is Ubuntu.

  Let's say I have a directory with a few files in it like this: $ ls file1 file2 file3 And I want to do some tab completion in bash: $ cat file<tab> file1 file2 file3 I remember seeing someone doing tab completion and the shell bolded the next parts, so in this case, it would bold the 1, 2 and 3 of the filename so it'll look like this: file**1** file**2** file**3** which will tell you what you should type in next. I think this was a feature of zsh, but is there any way to get it in bash?

  I have a ubuntu apache webserver and I have enabled mod_deflate to gzip all the content. However there's one folder I'd like to disable the mod_deflate for. I was going to do something like this: <Location /myfolder> RemoveOutputFilter DEFLATE </Location> But that doesn't work. Rational: I am trying to debug an XMLRPC server and I am using wireshark to see what gets past in the HTTP requests, since the replies are gzipped, I can't see what's going on.

• Given a debian source package - How do I install the build-deps?

  I have a debian (well technically ubuntu) source package, i.e. the .dsc, the .tar.gz, etc., I want to build this. The dpkg-buildpackage fails, since I don't have all the build dependencies. Normally I'd use apt-get build-dep, but this package isn't in apt. Is there a 'clean', 'proper' way to install all the build dependencies, given a source package. I know I could just open the debian/control file, but I'm curious if there's a 'proper' way.

• How can I force a MySQL table to become corrupted?

  I have written a simple Nagios plugin that calls mysqlcheck (which checks for corrupted tables) and will give a warning if any are corrupt. However none of my tables are corrupt now. So I'm not 100% sure that my plugin is working fine. I have a dev server that's not misson critical. How can I force one (or any) of the tables there to be corrupt so that I can test my nagios alert? For the record the server is Ubuntu Dapper and the mysql is version 5.0

• powertop keeps telling me to turn off the same thing, over and over

  I am running an ubuntu lucid laptop on battery. I want to make my power last as long as possible. Aswell as the normal things like turn down screen brightness, and turn off wifi, I'm using powertop. It will sometimes tell me things, e.g.: Suggestion: Enable USB autosuspend by pressing the U key OK, I press the U key to do that. However a few minutes later it will give me the same suggestion, it's as if it never enabled USB autosuspend the first time. It does this for other things aswell, not just USB autosuspend. e.g. it'll give me this message frequently: An audio device is active 100.0% of the time: hwC0D1 LSI ID 1040 Q - Quit R - Refresh A - Turn HD audio powersave on Is there anything I can do to make these choices 'stick'? Or do I have some unfortunatle hardware that won't obey linux? (If so, is there any way to confirm this?)

• Linux - Help, I'm running out of inodes!

  I have a filesystem that has lots of small files. Currently about 80% of inodes are used (I checked with df -i), however only 60% of disk space is used. How can I 'increase' the number of inodes? If it was just disk space, I know that I could just increase the size of the disk (this disk is on LVM). If I increase the size of the disk, will that make me have more inodes? • How to send Content-Disposition headers in apache for files?

  I have a directory of text files that I'm serving out with apache 2. Normally when I (or any user) access the files they see them in their browser. I want to 'force'* the web browser to pop up a 'Save as' dialog box. I know this is possible to do with the Content-Disposition headers (more info). Is there some way to turn that on for each file? Ideally I'd like something like this: <Directory textfiles> AutoAddContentDispositionHeaders On </Directory> And then apache would set the correct content disposition header, including using the same filename. Something like this might be possible with the apache Header directive. Bonus points if it's included by standing in apache in debian. I could do a simple PHP wrapper script that takes in a filename argument, makes the call to header(...) and then prints the file, but then i have to validdate input etc. that's work I'm trying to avoid. * I know you can't actually force things when it comes to the web

• Best terminal unix editor to suggest to someone?

  What's the best terminal editor to suggest to a unix newbie? i.e. not vim or emacs. There are a few editors, joe, nano, etc. Some have easy to remember commands / keyboard shortcuts, others don't. I'm looking for an editor that one could talk someone through over the phone with, for remote sysadminning.

• Unix copy command that has a progress bar, but not as heavy as rsync

  I need to copy lots of files. Usually I use rsync because I pass it the -aP options and I can see (a) how many files are left to process and (b) how much of each individual file is copied. However rsync also does lots of things with checksums to verify that a file was copied. However I don't really need that now. But normal cp doesn't include the above mentioned count of files left, which is very helpful. Is there anything like cp that includes progress of how many files left, but isn't as heavy as rsync?

• rsync - Exclude files that are over a certain size?

  I am doing a backup of my desktop to a remote machine. I'm basically doing rsync -a ~ example.com:backup/ However there are loads of large files, e.g. wikipedia dumps etc. Most of the files I care a lot about a small, such as firefox cookie files, or .bashrc. Is there some invocation to rsync that will exclude files that are over a certain size? That way I could copy all files that are less than 10MB first, then do all files. That way I can do a fast backup of the most important files, then a longer backup of everything else.

• Firefox being really sluggish on php.net website?

  Is it just me, or is firefox (3.5 on Ubuntu 9.10 karmic) really sluggish when opening the PHP.net website? When I have several tabs open with just the PHP.net website, and I tab up and down (with Control-PageUp/Down), it's slow to change tab. If I do it quickly, then firefox freezes for a few seconds (I know because it goes grey, which is a compiz feature to show unresponsive windows). The CPU usage also goes up when I'm tabbing to PHP.net pages. UPDATE: This appears to happen for all PHP.net webpages. For other pages, on other sites, Firefox is fine (for me).
