• Modifying kernel shared memory settings on a lion install

  What's the location of the sysctl.conf file on lion? In Snow Leopard it was in /etc/sysctl.conf but now that folder doesn't contain it anymore. Searching for the file in spotlight yields no results. Have the shared memory settings been moved to a different conf file? What is it's name? EDIT I am trying to modify the kernel shared memory settings of the machine. When I didn't find the sysctl.conf file in the right place, I created my own with the recommended settings and put into /etc directory. However running sysctl -a still shows me that the old memory settings are in place. How do I go about modifying these on a lion install?

• Disable "Print and Close" Preview Shortcut on OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

  I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion from Leopard and there is a global shortcut that I would really like to disable. Apparently, now if you select a document and press Command + p, Preview will open, print the document, then close. I'm sure this was done with the purest intentions but, unfortunately, it is right next to Command + o, which I use many times a day to open files. Since installing Mountain Lion, I've accidentally printed way too many documents just trying to open them! I've gone into the Keyboard preference pane and tried to find where this shortcut is located, but haven't had any success. Anyone know how I can disable this?

• Open original Microsoft Office document (not "version 1") on Mac OS X Lion restart

  My MacBook Pro running Lion has been frequently freezing lately, and I've had to restart with the power button. When Lion starts up again, the Microsoft Office applications that were running start and load different autosaved versions of the documents I had open (i.e. it does not open abc.xlsx but [version 1] of abc.xlsx). Sometimes it also opens the original files. Several times I've inputted data into these "version 1" files, only to try to save it and realize that it isn't the original file and is sometimes missing data that is contained in the original file. Is there any way to make autorecover open the actual document with the unsaved changes, instead of making a new temporary version?

  My Mac is joined to an Active Directory domain. What I expected to see was the same ease of access to file shares and internal websites that Windows computers joined to the domain experience (i.e., no authentication needed; it just uses Windows Integrated Authentication). Instead I am asked for credentials each time I try to access those shares and protected websites (e.g. SharePoint). Is this normal behavior, or is something wrong with my Mac that it prompts me for my username and password for the domain when I access Windows file shares or intranet sites protected by NTLM/Kerberos? • Lion server profile manager, device enrollment doesn't work

  I am in the process of setting up Lion Servers profile manager to manage iPads on our local school network. I don't need to manage them while they are outside the network. I have successfully had it working on my personal network. The school network is behind a proxy which we have no control over. I can get the iPads to view the mydevices page and install a trust cert. I have managed to get an iPad to successfully install the remote management profile. After this the profile manager bugs out. It will list the active task of 'new device (sending)' but it's unable to complete the task. If I click on the device on profile manager and try any of the actions out they will all fail to complete. I am using the auto generated certificates and this works if I bring the server and iPad outside of the school network. I am on Lion, and when I remove all files associated with MySQL on my machine it still tells me that I have a newer version installed when I try to install it from the DMG file.   i recently installed a fresh version of ubuntu 12.04 i wanted to transfer my old files from my pc that is running windows, to my other pc which now has ubuntu installed on it. They are both on the same network, i feel like this should be something easy to do, but i cant figure it out at all. Any help would be appreciated thank you.   The catch is you have no SNMP access, not even public. The end vision is locate a PC in building easily even if PC's are moved around. The MAC address of the PC is known and the software would run as client on each desktop, reporting back which port the PC was plugged into. Well from a programmer perspective, my network skills are not the best. Yes I could use SNMP, download the MAC port table, load it into SQL, match it to the PC name. Seems alot of work. Lets say I ping a single point from the PC. Would the echo have some thing unique for each device on the same switch? All I need to identify some thing unique for each PC plugged into each port. If the PC was moved from location A to a different location then the unique response would change.

• Rosetta Stone Network V3 doesn't recognize built-in microphone in OSX Lion

  I am using Rosetta Stone Network V3 on an early 2011 MacBook Pro running OSX Lion 10.7.3. When I log in, select a language and level, and then a lesson, I am prompted to select a microphone. The built in microphone doesn't show up, yet I've used it multiple times for other applications. I heard from another user that it doesn't work if headphones with a built-in microphone are used. I have not yet tried a USB microphone. Is there some free work around to this? I would prefer to not have to buy a USB microphone, but if that is the only solution, then I'll live. Edit: I noticed that Rosetta Stone tells me that if I don't have a microphone I should disable speech to move on, but that option is grayed out for me.

• Crontab script on Mac OS X Lion does not work anymore

  I have a problem with cron tasks. Previously this script worked fine on Mac OS X 10.6 server, but when I initialize it on Lion (client), this script stopped working. Basically, this .bat file calls a jar file (that invokes a loop of mysqldump commands) to backup several databases on several servers, and runs perfectly if launched by the shell. cd /Users/nameoftheuser/Desktop/backupper /usr/bin/java -cp .:Backupper.jar:lib/mail.jar backupper.Main "/Users/nameoftheuser/Desktop/backupper/listasiti.txt" "/Users/nameofthe/Desktop/backupper/config.properties But if the cron launches the same .bat file, the generated database backups are 0 bytes. The cron entry is: 0 0 sh /Users/path/to/file.bat I believe that the problem is that cron doesn't run as root. Or what else?

• Redirect URL using Mac OS X Server Lion

  I have just set up a Mac Mini with OS X Lion Server to host my own website. I have registered multiple domain names, but I would like the user to be automatically redirected to my main domain name if they type in one of the others (i.e. if the user types in www.myotherdomain.com the URL will be forwarded instantly to www.mymaindomain.com). In the Web settings of Server.app, you can easily add additional domains (which works) but it does not change the URL in the browser to www.mymaindomain.com. It keeps www.myotherdomain.com whilst still displaying the correct pages. Does the redirects or alias options do what I want? I can't seem to work out how to use them (there seems to be no documentation that I can find). In Redirects, you need to enter: 'Redirect Type' (Exact Match or Regular Expression) 'Redirect Path' 'Destination URL' 'Redirect Status' (Original was permanently moved, etc) In Alias, you need to enter: 'Alias Type' (Exact Match or Regular Expression) 'Alias Path' 'Destination Folder' Any help would be great.

Here's is the strange part. If I make a symbolic link of the site in my ~/Sites folder (ln -s ~/mysite ~/Sites/mysite) and navigate to http://localhost/~me/mysite It's nice and fast the way it should be.

  I use EncFS to encrypt my files. So far, I've been using the installer provided by BoxCryptor. It packs EncFS 1.7.4, MacFuse and MacFusion in one installer and works nicely on Mountain Lion. But MacFuse is not actively developed and most people might replace it with Fuse for OS X or something similar. Are there other packaged installers for EncFS? Or do you always compile EncFS from source? If so, is there a tutorial on how to compile?

• Mountain Lion fails to connect to Windows share after the connection is interrupted

  I have a Windows 7 share that my Mountain Lion Macbook Pro connects to. The windows share is simply a user account. For whatever reason, when my connection gets interrupted, the mac will show a dialog stating as such and will ask me to ignore or disconnect. From this point forward, I cannot re-establish the connection from the mac to the windows share (even if I reboot the mac). I always have to reboot the windows machine in order for my mac to see the share again. My Windows share is my media center, so I'm not always able to reboot the machine because it is recording TV. Has anybody else encountered this problem and if so how is it resolved?

• Location Services are always disabled in Mac OS X Lion

  A simple location services program was working fine on my machine and suddenly stopped working. Upon further exploring the problem, I realized that some process has disabled location services in System Preferences » Security & Privacy » Privacy. I checked Enable Location Services, but again it got disabled automatically. After some research I found that it's not just my program, even built-in system functions are also failing because of this problem for example System Preferences » Date & Time » Time Zone failed to get the current location. • Port Redirection on Mac OS X Lion

  I have tried to solve this issue using pf but with no luck. Basically, I am trying to redirect incoming port 443 traffic to port 22. I have tried to set up a rule in a file and load it in pf but I get syntax error. Can anyone with more experience with pf provide some insight? Here's what I've attempted: pass in on en1 proto tcp from any to any port 443 rdr-to 127.0.0.1 port 22 and pass in quick proto tcp to port 443 rdr-to 127.0.0.1 port 22 I've been able to do this in MacOSX Snow Leopard with ipfw: sudo ipfw add 1443 forward 127.0.0.1,22 ip from any to any 443 in but it doesn't work in Lion (it gives me an Invalid Argument error).

• Clicking on Dock icon does not bring window on top (OS X Lion)

  I am using OS X Lion and I have a very annoying problem with windows not showing up when I click on Dock icons. It happens when I have some windows opened in one space but I am viewing another space at the moment. For example, I have Mail and Skype on space #2 but I am on space #1. Note that all windows are not minimized. I want to quickly switch to Mail. So I click on Mail icon in Dock, it switches the space to #2, menubar shows that active window is Mail but Mail window is actually below Skype window. The strangest thing is that sometimes it works as expected showing the Mail on top. I can't see any logic here, it's absolutely unpredictable, thus annoying. Does anyone experienced such problems? I wonder if it's a bug or correct behaviour. Is there any way to fix that?

• Pausing a song in iTunes using the space bar no longer works after upgrade to Lion

  I used to be able to switch to iTunes using cmd-tab and press the space bar to pause a song as it was playing. This allowed me to to stop the song quickly when I was interrupted by a phone call. However, this no longer works. I can only go to the Controls menu item in iTunes and select Controls -- Pause. I do see that the menu item "Pause" is mapped to "space". When I press the space bar now with iTunes as the "active" application I just hear a tone. Recently I upgraded both Lion and iTunes so I am not quite sure which one stopped this from working properly. Does anyone know how to get this functionality back?

  I am using Cisco VPN client over lion and I want to make the ip-up and ip-down work. There is no sign of any action taken when I connect or disconnect this VPN connection. I really doubt whether the syntax has been changed or even this kind if connection is triggering the ip-up. Also the files are given full permission 0755 or a+x or even 777 using the following command: sudo chmod a+x /etc/ppp/ip-up Any clue on how to debug this would be appreciated. I am totally confused, netstat -rn -f inet doesn't show the routes. Even when the routes are added manually, closing the VPN connection does not run the ip-down and the routes must be deleted manually.
