  • Why don't research papers that mention custom software release the source code?

    Is there a reason why the source code of softwares mentioned in research papers is not released ? I understand that research papers are more about the general idea of accomplishing something than implementation details, but I don't get why they don't release the code. For example, in this paper ends with: Results The human line drawing system is implemented through the Qt framework in C++ using OpenGL, and runs on a 2.00 GHz Intel dual core processor workstation without any additional hardware assistance. We can interactively draw lines while the system synthesizes the new path and texture. Do they keep the source code closed intentionally because of a monetization they intend to make with it, or because of copyright ?

  • Ubuntu 14.04 : Lost my sound randomly tried a few commands and I think I failed

    I lost my sound the other day and I tried to delete pulseaudio then reinstall, then I tried to delete it and install alsa, It did not work and I had to reinstall everything; overall bad idea... now I can't have any sound. Should I do a fresh install? I don't know how to boot an usb drive with GRUB...   • How to play the sound of an object sliding on another object for a variable duration

    I would like to add sound effects to a basic 2D game. For example, a stone sphere is rolling on wood surface. Let's say I have a 2 second audio recording of this. How could I use the sample to add sound for an arbitrary duration ? So far I have two solutions in mind: a/ record the sound for an amount of time that is greater than the maximum expected duration, and play only a part of it; b/ extract a small portion of the sample and play it in a loop for the duration of the move; however I'm not sure if it makes sense with an audio wave.

    Hello, I know there is landscape from canonical, but it has some $$ costs. Als there is webmin, and it can be used as a cluster management tool. Also there is m23, probably the most usable and interesting peace of manager software. But, what would you suggest to install and use on following configuration: 1) 100 desktop users, against an AD with quest authentication services installed. (ubunt8.04,9.04,9.10,10.04) 2) 50 servers (debian sid, lenny , ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04) We work on different software, so each group of persons need different configurations, each server has different pourposses, nothing is clusterized. And we have a good enough backup software.   • Is it safe to use S3 over HTTP from EC2, as opposed to HTTPS

    I found that there is a fair deal of overhead when uploading a lot of small files to S3. Some of this overhead comes from SSL itself. How safe is it to talk to S3 without SSL when running in EC2? From the awesome comments below, here are some clarifications: this is NOT a question about HTTPS versus HTTP or the sensitivity of my data. I'm trying to get a feeling for the networking and protocol particularities of EC2 and S3. For example Are we guaranteed to be passing through only the AWS network when communicating from EC2 to S3 Can other AWS users (apart from staff) sniff my communications between EC2 and S3 Is authentication on their api done on every call, and thus credentials are passed on every call? Or is there some kind of authenticated session. I am using the jets3t lib. Feedback from people with some AWS experience would be appreciated. Thanks Marc

  • Perl on MacOS X 10.6.2: GDBM_File missing, how to install or work around?

    When I need a Perl module, I typically use CPAN. It works fine. But not this time. I want to use MARC::Charset, but this one uses GDBM_File, and I can't seem to install GDBM_File from CPAN. CPAN finds it all right, but trying to install it, it starts installing the full Perl 5.10.1 distribution. MARC::Charset is a rather old module, so there should be a way to use it from some common Perl version (Mac OS X 10.6.2 has 5.10.0 and 5.8.9 by default). While installing the full blow Perl 5.10.1 is not an option, modifying MARC::Charset to stop using GDBM_File might be one. What would be the best course of action to do so? This last option might also be the only one. googling GDBM_File uncovers a few items that suggest that gdbm is not even available on the Mac. Those items typically went over my head though. While I don't expect a silver bullet, somebody may have a pointer or two on where I should start. After all, MARC::Charset only does character transliteration to/from the marc8 char set, which unfortunately, iconv doesn't seem to support.

    I am trying to learn redirection for a WordPress site of my own. I am testing the concept of redirecting a single WordPress post by using a dummy site. However, it doesn't seem to be working for me.     I read economics at university(nothing to see with linux, isn't it? :P). I have some basic knowledge about booting process, Linux Kernel compiling from source and stuff like that. But of course I have still much to learn sometimes some errors appears and "voila" I am lost. I had: Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuse, Arch.. using Gentoo now. I'd like to know what you linux users, professionals, administrators... would think it is the best way to learn linux in a professional way. Is it worth studying it and passing the LPIC test enough to work in the linux world? or do I need going to IT uni? I've heard LFS is a good way of learning about linux, is that real? I've been thinking about getting to LFS learn about more deeply about the linux process and learning scripts.     I'm still going through some guides on RoR and i'm stuck here at "Deploying the demo app" I followed instructions: " With the completion of microposts resources, now is a good time to push the repository up to GitHub: " $ git add . $ git commit -a -m "Finish demo app" $ git push What happened wrong here was the push part.. it outputted this: $ git push fatal: No configured push destination. Either specify the URL from the command-line or configure a remote repository using git remote add < name < url git push < name So i tried following the insturctions by doing this command: $git remote add demo_app 'www.github.com/levelone/demo_app' fatal: remote demo_app already exists. So i push: $git push demo_app fatal: 'www.github.com/levelone/demo_app' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly What can i do here?     There are a few overviews in the OS X 10.6 docs that I access via XCode, and a bunch of examples, but the actual reference docs seem to be absent. I was able to figure things out by reading the inline comments in the header files (e.g., ICCameraDevice.h), which looks like the source for the XCode docs. Is there a way to install these docs? The biggest problem with the overview writeups and the examples is that they assume you have a GUI. The whole point of ImageCaptureCore, vs. ImageKit, as I understand it is that you don't have a GUI, or want to have your own (my case). Anyone else have a good time figuring out how these APIs work? Then i run a function, which among others is supposed to modify some item in my array from within the function. This is unfortunately not working. So my question is simple. Is it normal?   • /lib/udev/net.agent causing high CPU usage

    We have a number of Soekris boxes running Debian Squeeze. They were installed through an automated process consisting of using deboostrap and copying it unto a Compact Flash card. We use puppet to manage the configuration of all these boxes. Before Debian Squeeze, they were running Voyage Linux which is just a "lighter" version of Debian. Since we have switched, we're seeing the /lib/udev/net.agent process take up an aweful lot of CPU. We have so far been unable to find any clue as to what this really does and why it's taking up some much CPU time. In htop we see the following : We are seeing absolutly no syslog messages related to this process so we're a bit lost... So, I am looking for pointers as to what this process does in general and what could be the potential cause of such CPU usage.

    I just bought a VPS with cPanel/WHM. My hosting provider gave me 3 dedicated IP addresses with my plan. I read on the internet that I should use 2 IPs for my nameservers and the other one as the main IP for all my shared accounts. Could you tell me why I should do that ? What are the advantages of using IP addresses only for nameservers and another one only for my shared accounts instead of using the same IP for all my nameservers and shared account ? I'm asking because I don't want to use an IP for nothing. Thank you.

  • How can I tag sequences inside videos?

    For example, let's say I find a sequence in a WWDC session (Apple videos) that explains a technical point very well. I would like to be able to store the exact range in the video, tag it with keywords, and manage all that information. And when I want to share this information, I could simply export to a plain English sentence: "Have a look at the video named …". It would be great to be able to launch a video player for local videos and go straight to the beginning of the sequence.

  • How to index filenames, size and basic informations for every file on a network?

    I have several machines, most of then are Linux and one of them is under Mac OS X. Each machine has several internal hard drives, and I also have a few external hard drives. How can I reliably find files with setup ? External drives are not always plugged, but the files don't move often. Ideally I would like to be able to search the metadata given with the 'file' command, and move files over the network.

  • Problem with intel chipset 4 serie and centos dealing with dual head

    I've a fujitsu lifebook S7220, it's been a while since i try to configure it to use a dual head with centos 5.4 x86_64. Everytime I try, the xserver crash... I've got an intel chipset mobile 4 serie (GMA 4500MHD, if I recall good!)
