• Ubuntu 12.10 MBR not loading from dual boot selector

  Since I am new to the forums here I cannot post pictures, but hopefully this link to my error screen will work. Error when selecting to boot the Ubuntu mbr Basically no matter what I do, windows boot manager wants to load windows and windows only. I tried running from my hard drive and also from a USB drive that had live installed. Both times I ended up with this message. I am running windows 7 with all the newest updates, on a Samsung series 7 Laptop. I have had many dual boot machines in the past and never seen this issue. I even had a dual booting windows 7 machine a few months ago and had no issues at all. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! Justin

• Miami 311: Built on Windows Azure

  This is a cool use of Azure. The city of Miami tool their “311” data around potholes, trash pickup issues, recycling issues, broken sidewalks and the like and put that data in Azure. The next step is that they leveraged Bing Maps and Silverlight to visualize those issues spread on a map of the city. The solution takes advantage of virtually unlimited storage and processing power, provides the ability to quickly address service requests and implement updates even during peak times such as hurricane season. If things change, the City can bring the solution on site or move to a physical facility, all based on  need and cost-effectiveness. As a result, residents logging on to Miami 311 can see on average 4,500 issues in progress - not represented as a ‘list', but located on a map in relation to other projects in their neighborhood .  A simple click on the map allows them to easily drill down to more and more specific details if they want. In short, they have turned what used to be represented by a meaningless list of data into useful information, and created  actionable and consumable knowledge that is relevant to the citizens of Miami. For Miami, their ‘service call to the city' becomes an interactive process they can follow - and the City has a new tool to manage and deliver outcomes. … When the city made the move to the web, they chose tools they knew and software they trust. The Microsoft Windows Azure cloud platform made it easy to do, and they used both Bing mapping and Silverlight to build a user friendly front end. According to Port25 (Miami 311: Built on Windows Azure - Port 25: The Open Source Community at Microsoft), it took two people 8 days to implement the whole system and they are going to open source their solution so that other cities can leverage it. I haven’t seen yet where and how they are going to release it but I’ll keep you posted if I find out.

• What are `Developmental Milestones` for programming skills?

  I studied in the field of Computer Science for 6 years, bachelor's degree and master's degree. I have studied all the basic programming like C, Java, VB, C#, Python, and etc. When I have free times, I will learn new programming languages and follow new programming trends by myself , such as PHP, HTML5, CSS5, LESS, Bootstrap, Symfony2, and GitHub. So, if someone wants me to write some instructions using these languages, I'm certain that I can do it, not so good but I can get a job done. However, I don't have any favorite programming language. Moreover, I also have studied about algorithms, database, and etc. Everything I just wrote so far seems that I know a lot in this field. In fact, I feel I am very stupid. I cannot answer 80% of the questions on SO. In spite of those languages??, I have studied. Perhaps it is because I have never worked before. As there is the Developmental Milestones for children, which refers to how a child becomes able to do more complex things as they get older, I would like to evaluate the same thing but for programming skills. What are the set of functional skills or age-specific tasks that most programmers can do at a certain age range? In order to evaluate myself, I would like to ask your opinions that all of the skills I mentioned above, are they enough for programmers to know when they are 25 years old? What are your suggestions in order to improve the skills in this field?

  Earlier this year, I wrote an article series where I talked about developer’s life and compared it with Superhero. I have got amazing response to this series and I have been receiving quite a lots of email suggesting that I should write more blog post about them. Currently I am not planning to write more blog post but I will soon continue another series. In this blog post, I have summarized the entire series. Let me know if you want me to write about any superhero. I will see what I can do about that hero. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Captain America Captain America was first created as a comic book character in the 1940’s as a way to boost morale during World War II.  Aimed at a children’s audience, his legacy faded away when the war ended.  However, he has recently has a major reboot to become a popular movie character that deals with modern issues. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is the Incredible Hulk The Incredible Hulk is possibly one of the scariest superheroes out there.  All superheroes are meant to be “out of this world” and awe-inspiring, but I think most people will agree with I say The Hulk takes this to the next level.  He is the result of an industrial accident, which is scary enough in it’s own right.  Plus, when mild-mannered Bruce Banner is angered, he goes completely out-of-control and transforms into a destructive monster that he cannot control and has no memories of. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Wonder Woman We have focused a lot lately on this “superhero series.”  I love fantasy books and movies, and I feel like there is a lot to be learned from them.  As I am writing this series, though, I have noticed that every super hero I write about is a man.  So today, I would like to talk about the major female super hero – Wonder Woman. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Harry Potter Harry Potter might not be a superhero in the traditional sense, but I believe he still has a lot to teach us and show us about life as a developer.  If you have been living under a rock for the last 17 years, you might not know that Harry Potter is the main character in an extremely popular series of books and movies documenting the education and tribulation of a young wizard (and his friends). Developer’s Life – Every Developer is Like Transformers Transformers may not be superheroes – they don’t wear capes, they don’t have amazing powers outside of their size and folding ability, they’re not even human (technically).  Part of their enduring popularity is that while we are enjoying over-the-top movies, we are learning about good leadership and strong personal skills. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Iron Man Iron Man is another superhero who is not naturally “super,” but relies on his brain (and money) to turn him into a fighting machine.  While traditional superheroes are still popular, a three-movie franchise and incorporation into the new Avengers series shows that Iron Man is popular enough on his own. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Sherlock Holmes I have been thinking a lot about how developers are like super heroes, and I have written two blog posts now comparing them to Spiderman and Superman.  I have a lot of love and respect for developers, and I hope that they are enjoying these articles, and others are learning a little bit about the profession.  There is another fictional character who, while not technically asuper hero, is very powerful, and I also think stands as a good example of a developer. That character is Sherlock Holmes.  Sherlock Holmes is a British detective, first made popular at the turn of the 19thcentury by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  The original Sherlock Holmes was a brilliant detective who could solve the most mind-boggling crime through simple observations and deduction. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Chhota Bheem Chhota Bheem is a cartoon character that is extremely popular where I live.  He is my daughter’s favorite characters.  I like to say that children love Chhota Bheem more than their parents – it is lucky for us he is not real!  Children love Chhota Bheem because he is the absolute “good guy.”  He is smart, loyal, and strong.  He and his friends live in Dholakpur and fight off their many enemies – and always win – in every episode.  In each episode, they learn something about friendship, bravery, and being kind to others.  Chhota Bheem is a good role model for children, and I think that he is a good role model for developers are well. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Batman Batman is one of the darkest superheroes in the fantasy canon.  He does not come to his powers through any sort of magical coincidence or radioactive insect, but through a lot of psychological scarring caused by witnessing the death of his parents.  Despite his dark back story, he possesses a lot of admirable abilities that I feel bear comparison to developers. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Superman I enjoyed comparing developers to Spiderman so much, that I have decided to continue the trend and encourage some of my favorite people (developers) with another favorite superhero – Superman.  Superman is probably the most famous superhero – and one of the most inspiring. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Spiderman I have to admit, Spiderman is my favorite superhero.  The most recent movie recently was released in theaters, so it has been at the front of my mind for some time. Spiderman was my favorite superhero even before the latest movie came out, but of course I took my whole family to see the movie as soon as I could!  Every one of us loved it, including my daughter.  We all left the movie thinking how great it would be to be Spiderman.  So, with that in mind, I started thinking about how we are like Spiderman in our everyday lives, especially developers. Private Sub Command2_Click() Open jobs For Append As #1 Write #1, Combo1, Combo3, Combo2, Text3 Close #1 End Sub I instead would like to write it to the file so that if a persons name is already in the file then it would just put the data in the file, under their that is already there but without the name. I can't figure out how to do this but this is what I would like it to end up like. • Why can't my Apache see my media folder?

  Anyone ever seen this exception? I'm running in hosted mode on GWT 1.6.4 on a mac. I'm using the AutoSuggest and it's throwing this exception trying to show the popup. It works fine in compiled mode, but obviously hosted mode is rather important. • Threadpool with pasistant worker instances

  So basically what im trying to do is queue up tasks in a thread pool to be executed as soon as a worker becomes free, i have found various examples of this but in all cases the examples have been setup to use a new Worker instance for each job, i want persistent workers. Im trying to make a ftp backup tool, i have it working but because of the limitations of a single connection it is slow. What i ideally want to do is have a single connection for scanning directories and building up a file list then four workers to download said files. • Wireless driver - how to load manufacturer's STA file (Ralink 3290)

  Caution: I'm a newb. Hardware: Giada i35G, cedar trail atom with nvidia gf119, railtek ethernet and Ralink 3290 for wireless. Already accomplished: Installed Ubuntu 12.10, loaded GPU drivers and redirected sound out through GPU card to HDMI. Ethernet works like a charm. Issue: Can't get my wireless up and running. There seems to be no package to which I can simply run a sudo get-aspt install ... I found the corresponding Linux driver from the manufacturer's site, but I have not managed to find out what to with the file. Here's the manufacturers site: http://www.ralinktech.com/en/04_support/support.php?sn=501 I get a file with the following name: \2012_0508_RT3290_Linux_STA_v2.6.0.0.bz2 I hope somebody might be able to tell me what to do next.   I'm installing Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit version on an HP Envy 15. I get the same problem these people have here: "unable to find a medium containing a live file system" error when installing but the question was never resolved. I spent so long researching and got so frustrated that I took my computer down to a shop and asked them to install it for me. It took them a while but they managed to get it installed. The reason for this error they had said was because Ubuntu didn't have the USB 3.0 drivers it needed to install properly. I'm reinstalling Ubuntu yet again and I've run into the same issue so my question is: does anyone know.. a) Where to get these USB 3.0 drivers? b) How to get them installed when installing the Ubuntu OS? • When using membership provider, do you use the user ID or the username?

  I've come across this is in a couple of different applications that I've worked on. They all used the ASP.NET Membership Provider for user accounts and controlling access to certain areas, but when we've gotten down into the code I've noticed that in one we're passing around the string based user name, like "Ralph Waters", or we're passing around the Guid based user ID from the membership table. Now both seem to work. You can make methods which get by username, or get by user ID, but both have felt somewhat "funny". When you pass a string like "Ralph Waters" you're passing essentially two separate words that make up a unique identifier. And with a Guid, you're passing around a string/number combination which can be cast and made unique. So my question is this; when using Membership Provider, which do you use, the username or the user ID to get back to the user? Thanks all!

• XP Client for NFS failure dialog on startup, but drive mapping works

  I'm mounting an NFS share to some windows machines using the tools that come in the Services for UNIX Administration toolkit. I've set up the User Name Mapping service to use local passwd and group files. I had to manually start the User Name Mapping service, and then created an 'advanced map' from the XP machine's user to a uid that exists in on my NFS server, like so: Windows User: Matt Bennett UNIX Domain: PCNFS UNIX User: mattbennett UID: 10250 Primary: * I can map a network drive without any issues, and it correctly identifies the UID and GID to use, but when I reboot I get this message: "An error occurred while connecting to the NFS server. Make sure that the Client for NFS service has started. If the problem persists make sure Client for NFS service can communicate with User Name Mapping or PCNFS server." After dismissing the dialog, the machine finishes booting and the network drive is there in My Computer with the title "Disconnected Network Drive", but I can open it I can see the network share without a problem, and then it drops the 'disconnected' from its title. It seems like the services are starting in the wrong order or something, so the first attempt to connect fails but subsequent ones work as expected. There don't seem to be any symptoms apart from the dialog box, but obviously something's not quite right. What have I done wrong? Thanks, Matt.

  I have just purchased a new HP dv7t-7000 and I would like to run Windows 7 / Ubuntu. How do I setup the dual boot? Can I install both operating systems with an 8gb USB drive? Can I still make use of the 32gb SSD? I'm unfamiliar with the efficacy of using an SSD for caching with a 750gb 7200rpm sata 3 drive. I can only see using it for windows 7 - which I have installed in order to play games. Thank you!

• How do I re-enable fast user switching

  I am running Windows7 RC1, I have recently installed CheckPoint VPN SecureClient (http://www.checkpoint.com/products/vpn-1_clients/) to connect to my work network. On installation this appears to have disabled Fast User Switching. You will notice "Switch user" is now greyed out. I tried some googleing first and the most popular solution is to remove a registry entry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ GinaDLL I have no entry there. Any ideas? Thanks.

• Why am I getting this SVN can't move .svn/tmp/x to trunk/x error?

  I am trying to checkout into the virtualbox shared folder with svn 1.7 in ubuntu 12.04 running as a guest on a windows 7 host. I had read that this error was a 1.6 problem, and updated - but am still receiving the error: svn: E000071: Can't move '/mnt/hostShare/code/www/.svn/tmp/svn-hsOG5X' to '/mnt/hostShare/code/www/trunk/statement.aspx?d=201108': Protocol error I found this blog post about the same error in a mac environment, but am finding that changing the folder/file permissions does nothing. vim .svn/entires just has the number 12 - does this need to be changed? Thank you for any assistance! (just another reason for why I prefer git...)

• Why won't my service start, and why doesn't upstart output any errors?

  I am trying to 'start gunicorn' as a service via upstart as user ale. I'm using gunicorn/flask on ubuntu 12.04 w/ init (upstart 1.5) Here is my /etc/init/gunicorn.conf setuid btw setgid flask script export HOME=/home/btw export WORKON_HOME=$HOME/.virtualenvs . $HOME/.virtualenvs/default/bin/activate cd $HOME/flask workon default gunicorn -c gunicorn.py bw:app end script It doesn't output anything other than gunicorn start/running, process 12992. If i then do 'status gunicorn' I get stop/waiting. any ideas on how to debug this? I tried following http://upstart.ubuntu.com/wiki/Debugging but it didn't help. If I do the following as user ale in the app's directory: 1. workon default 2. gunicorn -c gunicorn.py bw:app then Gunicorn runs fine. If I start it manually, it shows that the workers have been loaded, etc. Thanks for any help / suggestions!

The proxy server could not handle the request GET /. Reason: Error reading from remote server Could anybody share some insight on what I may be doing wrong and what the best possible solution would be to fix this? Thanks.

• Best practice for scaling a single application source to multiple nodes

  I have an application which needs to scale horizontally to cover web and service nodes (at the moment they're all on one) but interact with the same set of databases and source files (both application code and custom assets). Database is no problem, it's handled already with replication in MongoDB. Also, the configuration of the servers are the same (100% linux). This question is literally about sharing a filesystem between machines so that its content is always correct, regardless of the node accessing it. My two thoughts have so far been NFS and SAN - SAN being prohibitively expensive and NFS seeing some performance issues on the second node with regards to glob()ing in PHP. Does anyone have recommended strategies or other techniques that don't involved sharding data across nodes or any potential gotchas in NFS that may cause slow disk seek times? To give you an idea of the scale, the main node initialises it's application modules in ~ 0.01 seconds. The secondary is taking ~2.2 seconds. They're VM's inside a local virtual network in ESXi and ping time between them is ~0.3ms

• Why can't SVN checkout into a virtualbox shared folder?

  I am trying to checkout into the virtualbox shared folder with svn 1.7 in ubuntu 12.04 running as a guest on a windows 7 host. I had read that this error was a 1.6 problem, and updated - but am still receiving the error: svn: E000071: Can't move '/mnt/hostShare/code/www/.svn/tmp/svn-hsOG5X' to '/mnt/hostShare/code/www/trunk/statement.aspx?d=201108': Protocol error I found this blog post about the same error in a mac environment, but am finding that changing the folder/file permissions does nothing. vim .svn/entires just has the number 12 - does this need to be changed? Thank you for any assistance! (just another reason for why I prefer git...)

• Printing Booklet Page Size in Adobe Reader 4-in-1

  So I have a 70 page pdf document that I'm trying to condense to a small booklet. I tried creating a formula to manually to perform it but it got ugly fast. 35,36,34,37,17,54,16,55,33,38,32,39,15,56,14,57,31,40,30,41,13,58,12,59 29,42,28,43,11,60,10,61,27,44,26,45,9,62,8,63,25,46,24,47,7,64,6,65 23,48,22,49,5,66,4,67,21,50,20,51,3,68,2,69,19,52,18,53,1,70 Once I print the booklet I should be able to cut the sheets in half and set the bottom half behind the top and staple it for a simple book. Which means Page 1 should have pages 35,36,17,54,34,37,16,55 Page 2 should have pages 33,38,15,56,32,39,14,57 And several pages later Page 9 should have pages 19,52,1,70,18,53 But manually doing this is a headache and it seems like the booklet function should contain functionality that can perform this. I'm using a commercial Konica Minolta C452
