• Relationship between C#, .NET, ASP, ASP.NET etc

  I'm really unclear on the difference between C#, C#.NET and the same for ASP and other '.NET' languages. From what I understand, .NET is a library/framework of... things. I think they're essentially access to Windows data such as form elements etc, but that doesn't seem to apply for ASP.NET. In addition, I see people calling themselves '.NET' developers. Does this mean they're fluent in C#, ASP and other languages? Finally, I never see C# without .NET attached. Is C# tied that closely to .NET as to be unusable without it? In summary: what exactly does .NET provide? How does it relate to C# and ASP etc? What does 'a .NET developer' mean? And finally, why do you never see C# without .NET? [As an aside, I realise these are multiple questions, but I think they are very inter-related (or at least that is the impression that browsing Programmers / SO etc has given me)].

• Why does display:table-cell not center content without display:table?

  I'm looking for the most efficient (or elegant) way to vertically and horizontally center content of variable height. I've come up with this: http://cssdeck.com/t/2veysdkg/16, which uses css tables to vertically center the main content. My demands for writing this particular piece of code were: Must be able to center variable and fixed width content vertically and horizontally Centered content must be inside the normal document flow (so no overlapping) Sticky footer and normal header of 100% width As few hacks, ugly code or non-semantic html as possible I didn't care about support for IE6, IE7 (I'll use a different stylesheet for them) The weird thing is that the demands above are only met when the header and footer are set to table-row, and the body-tag to display:table. Which is weird because as I understand it the css will generate anonymous table elements when parent table elements are missing. So table-cell should work without all the surrounding elements, but yet I've not been able to make it work. If it were up to me I would prefer to not mess with the display mode for the body tag, and leave the header and footer on display:block. But I've not been able to make it work. Does anyone understand why this doesn't work?

• Is hiding content with JavaScript or "text-indent: -9999px" bad for SEO?

  So apparently hiding content using "display: none" is bad for SEO and seen by googlebot as being deceptive. This according to a lot of the posts I read online and questions even on this site. But what if I hide keyword rich text using javascript? A jquery example: $(function() { $('#keywordRichTextContainer').hide(); }); or using visibility hidden: $(function() { $('#keywordRichTextContainer').css({ visibility: 'hidden', position: 'absolute' }); }); Would any of these techniques cause my site to be penalized? If googlebot can't read javascript then if I'm hiding through js it shouldn't know right? What about using "text-indent: -9999px"?

• When too much encapsulation was reached

  Recently, I read a lot of gook articles about how to do a good encapsulation. And when I say "good encapsulation", I don't talk about hiding private fields with public properties; I talk about preventing users of your Api to do wrong things. About 80% of the application code is at the top of the structure (Not used by other code). For this reason, there is probably no chance ever that this code will be used by other application. An example of encapsulation that prevent user to do wrong thing with your Api is to return an IEnumerable instead of IList when you don't want to give the ability to the user to add or remove items in the list. My question is: When encapsulation could be considered like too much of purism object oriented programming while keeping in mind that each hour of programming is charged to the customer? I want to do good code that is maintainable, easy to read and to use but when this is not a public Api (Used by other programmer), where could we put the line between perfect code and not so perfect code? • Messaging technologies between applications ?

  Recently, I had to create a program to send messages between two winforms executable. I used a tool with simple built-in functionalities to prevent having to figure out all the ins and outs of this vast quantity of protocols that exist. But now, I'm ready to learn more about the internals difference between each of theses protocols. I googled a couple of them but it would be greatly appreciate to have a good reference book that gives me a clean idea of how each protocol works and what are the pros and cons in a couple of context. Here is a list of nice protocols that I found: Shared memory TCP List item Named Pipe File Mapping Mailslots MSMQ (Microsoft Queue Solution) WCF I know that all of these protocols are not specific to a language, it would be nice if example could be in .net. • What is wrong with my Dot Product?

  I am trying to make a pong game but I wanted to use dot products to do the collisions with the paddles, however whenever I make a dot product objects it never changes much from .9 this is my code to make vectors vector = { make:function(object){ return [object.x + object.width/2,object.y + object.height/2] }, normalize:function(v){ var length = Math.sqrt(v[0] * v[0] + v[1] * v[1]) v[0] = v[0]/length v[1] = v[1]/length return v }, dot:function(v1,v2){ return v1[0] * v2[0] + v1[1] * v2[1] } } and this is where I am calculating the dot in my code vector1 = vector.normalize(vector.make(ball)) vector2 = vector.normalize(vector.make(object)) dot = vector.dot(vector1,vector2) Here is a JsFiddle of my code currently the paddles don't move. • Modified Strategy Design Pattern

  I've started looking into Design Patterns recently, and one thing I'm coding would suit the Strategy pattern perfectly, except for one small difference. Essentially, some (but not all) of my algorithms, need an extra parameter or two passed to them. So I'll either need to pass them an extra parameter when I invoke their calculate method or store them as variables inside the ConcreteAlgorithm class, and be able to update them before I call the algorithm. Is there a design pattern for this need / How could I implement this while sticking to the Strategy Pattern? I've considered passing the client object to all the algorithms, and storing the variables in there, then using that only when the particular algorithm needs it. However, I think this is both unwieldy, and defeats the point of the strategy pattern. Just to be clear I'm implementing in Java, and so don't have the luxury of optional parameters (which would solve this nicely).

• Marketplace to buy Templates for Twitter Bootstrap framework?

  Are there any sites where I could buy a site template designed in Twitter Bootstrap (so that it's easy to modify)? I'm working on a site redesign and I think finding a template that looks close enough and modifying it is an economical way to go. (We're pretty niche so I don't need us to have a super cool website.) But folks I've talked to say that many of those templates are hard to modify. So I'm thinking that finding a template designed in a customizable framework would be easy to modify.

• What is a good basic/flexible cms for a small website? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Which Content Management System (CMS) should I use? I'm designing a very basic portfolio website for an artist. It features a blog, portfolio, cv and contact page. I've handcoded the basics of this site in php/java, as it is a very small website (and I like coding by hand). But I need a simple cms backend for the dynamic parts of the website (the blog/portfolio). The big systems (ruby, joomla, wordpress) are far too invasive for my liking (and frankly a bit beyond my capabilities). Wordpress for example, requires too much adaptation of the design to the wordpress structure, and ruby is far too extensive for a simple site like this (in my opinion). So what I'm looking for is a (preferably open source) cms that has a simple backend for the artist to use as a blogger, with a mysql database for the content, that will allow me to insert content with simple tags (using smarty tags for example), but is otherwise not too invasive or demanding in terms of the required page structure. Does anyone know of a good cms that fits this description? p.s.: I have tried phpnews and cmsmadesimple, but phpnews was a litte too basic (but very close too what I'm looking for) and cmsmadesimple was way too slow (but otherwise also pretty close too what I wanted, though a bit too extensive).

• Is there a rule of thumb for what a bing map's zoom setting should be based on how many miles you want to display?

  If a map contains pushpins/waypoints that span only a couple of miles, the map should be zoomed way in and show a lot of detail. If the pushpins/waypoints instead cover vast areas, such as hundreds or even thousands of miles, it should be zoomed way out. That's clear. My question is: is there a general guideline for mapping (no pun intended) Bing Maps zoom levels to a particular number of miles that separate the furthest apart points? e.g., is there some chart that has something like: Zoom level N shows 2 square miles Zoom level N shows 5 square miles etc.?

• Cannot access Adsense funds after switching to third-party partnership program

  I had a Google Adsense partnership with $80 in it, but then switched to a different partnership and now can't get my money. When I first started YouTube, I joined the Adsense partnership program. After gaining $80 in my Adsense account, I got an offer to join a third party partnership program called Zoomin.tv. I accepted, and it is paying me monthly now. The problem is that my Adsense account still has the $80 in it, and is not gaining more cash. The Zoomin.tv money is going directly to my PayPal. The payment threshold in Adsense is $100, and you can't make it lower. Therefore, my money is stuck in Adsense and I'd love a solution that allows me to access my money.

• What are some good services for brainstorming domain name ideas? [closed]

• Prompt not working when logged in as specific user

  Hello I am running ubuntu 11.10 and access it via ssh with putty. My problem is that when I log in I get the prompt [email protected]:~$ and my arrow keys do what the y are supposed to. When I try to login in as another user account I made all I get is this as the prompt it never says the directory or anyting $ Also when ever I try to use the left, right, up or down arrow I get a character like this ^[[A Is this a bug in putty or did I just not set the account up right?

• Does BizSpark preclude you from accepting funding elsewhere?

  I am going to embark very soon on a software venture (have been a consultant and employee up until now). I see advantages in signing up for Microsoft's BizSpark. However, I wonder if doing so would preclude me from accepting funding from some equity-esque arrangements potentially available via crowdfunding. I know BizSpark's legal agreement probably spells this out, but it's about a gazillion pages long, so I'm hoping somebody here has existing knowledge of this so I don't have to spend a lot of time reading legalese.

  Does anyone know how to visually diagram the ways in which the flow of control in code passes between code produced by different groups and how that affects the amount of code that needs to be carefully written/reviewed/tested for system properties to hold? What I am trying to help people visualize are arguments of the form: For property P to hold, nd developers have to write application code, Ca, without certain kinds of errors, and nm maintainers have to make sure that the code continues to not have these kinds of errors over the project lifetime. We could reduce the error rate by educating nd developers and nm maintainers. Alternatively, we could be confident that P holds if all code paths that could violate P went through tool code, Ct, written by our specialists. In our case, test suites alone cannot give confidence that P holdsnd » nsnm ns|Ca| » |Ct| so writing and maintaining Ct is economical, frees up our developers to worry about other things, and reduces the ongoing education commitment by our specialists. or those conditions do not hold, so focusing on education and testing is preferable. Example 1 As a concrete example, suppose we want to ensure that our web-service only produces valid JSON output. Our web-service provides several query and mutation operators that can be composed in interesting ways. We could try to educate everyone who maintains those operations about the JSON syntax, the importance of conformance, and libraries available so that when they write to an output buffer, every possible sequence of appends results in syntactically valid JSON. • Best Way To Develop Robust Cross-Platform Application?

  Windows C programmer here (going back to 1992 and Windows95 back when it was called Windows93). Can function in C++, but mostly still a C programmer. Looking to build a cross-platform casual game. Very numbers heavy with only a few artistic embellishments and animations, so perhaps a development environment for business apps might be the best option. Or an easy-to-use 2D game dev platform. Target platforms: Windows, Mac, MS Tablet, iPhone, iPad, Android. I currently develop on Windows with Visual Studio 2012, but we could spend up to $50K on hardware/software/middleware if necessary. Not very competent getting open-source software working. Would rather pay the money and jump right into app development. Recommendations?

• How to you prevent someone from getting a "new free trial period" by just creating a new login?

  I am considering several options for the Trial version of our web app. The one I favor the most is the classic trial period. Of course, it's a LOT easier for someone to hack this system. They can defeat the various methods of fingerprinting the user, thusly: Browser cookie: Clear their cookies completely (or just for our site) or use a different device. Although Evercookie may help with the former. Email address: Create a new login (with a new email address) I'm going to monitor things for a while and just see how it goes. If it's a problem I'll consider requiring a credit card number matched to a name and billing zip code. Each such "ID constellation" would be considered one user. Someone could still have multiple credit card numbers but we could flag the same name+zipcode coming up again. Are there any better ways to do this?

• What are the advantages of a $ SKU of VS2012 over Express?

  I will be using Visual Studio only for creating C#/XAML Windows Store apps. Is there any reason for me to purchase a "Professional" SKU of VS 2012 rather than just using the Express (free) "Metro apps with C#/XAML" version? The only thing I can think of is that I won't be able to use Resharper in the Express version (which I've already purchased a license for, but I use it at work, so that won't be a waste of money if I can't use it at home) - plus, I believe that even the Express SKU of VS 2012 will have similar code quality utility built in.

  I've been using MS Frontpage 2003 to maintain our company website for years. Looking for a replacement that can: Import/convert a MS FrontPage website and "modernize it" (clean up the HTML to make it standards compliant, etc.) Supports (or converts) the substitutions (Include Page and Text substitutions that are done when the page is published (so they become static HTML). • Class Design for special business rules

  I'm developing an application that allows people to place custom manufacturing orders. However, while most require similar paperwork, some of them have custom paperwork that only they require. My current class design has a Manufacturer class, of which of one of the member variables is an array of RequiredSubmission objects. However, there are two issues that I am somewhat concerned about. First, some manufacturers are willing to accept either a standard form or their own custom form. I'm thinking of storing this in the RequiredSubmission object, with an array of alternate forms that are a valid substitute. I'm not sure that this is ideal, however. The major issue, however, is that some manufacturers have deadline cycles. For example, forms A, B and C have to be delivered by January 1, while payment must be rendered by January 10. If you miss those, you'll have to wait until the next cycle. I'm not exactly sure how I can get this to work with my existing classes—how can I say "this set of dates all belong to the same cycle, with date A for form A, date B for form B, etc." I would greatly appreciate any insights on how to best design these classes.

• Do web crawlers/spiders index azure web sites?

  For somebody who wants their web site to be as discoverable as possible (and who doesn't?), are Microsoft's Azure web sites (azurewebsites.net) a feasible domain to host sites? I have a site that is both on an azurewebsites.net and hosted under a completely different name by discountasp.net Both of these sites are exactly the same, except for the URL; whenever I update the code, I republish the site to/in both places. So obviosuly, they both have the same H1 and H2 elements. Searching for the value/content in my H1 tag, I find my .com site listed #3 on google and #2 on both Bing and Yahoo; OTOH, my azurewebsites.net site doesn't show up on the first page at all, in any of them. This makes me wonder if azurewebsites.net should only be used for Web API hosting and such-like, not for generic/commercial "public" sites. Are my conclusions valid?
