• Poor WAMP performance when using SMB/UNC Paths

  I've configured a WAMP (Windows Apache MySQL and PHP) stack when when configured to use local storage takes 3-4 seconds to load. When I use an SMB/UNC share it takes 12-15 seconds to load. • Force Finder to log in as Guest to a SMB share

  I have a QNAP NAS that offers a few SMB shares. As I'm in a trusted environment, my shares are accessible as guest rather than with a combination of username and password. Problem Now, when I click the name of the device in Finder's sidebar, I get the black "Connection failed" bar, with the option "Connect as...". When I click that, I receive: I can however press ? + K and enter the server's name manually, which gets me to this window: Here, I have to select "guest". Now, I can select one of the shares to connect to, and I'm finally connected to the server. If I select it in the sidebar, I get a list of all shares available, because I'm connected as "guest", obviously: What I need Well, as soon as I unmount all shares, I have to go through the same procedure of manually logging in as "guest" again, which I find quite annoying. Is there any way I could get Finder (or the underlying SMB client) to know which credentials to use? Or should I look for the solution rather on the server side? (I know that other SMB shares seem to work fine in my network) Diagnostics The only thing I can get out of Console.app is: 5/15/11 7:36:40 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[200] SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 64 This message occurs when I click the name of the SMB server in the Finder sidebar. • Why is my machine unable to mount my SMB drives ("CIFS VFS: Error connecting to socket. Aborting operation", return code -115)?

  I have a machine running Precise (12.04 x64), and I cannot mount my SMB drives (I have 3, we'll call them public, private and download). It used to work (a week or two ago) and I didn't touch fstab! The machine hosting the shares is a commercial NAS, and I'm not seeing anything that would indicate it's an issue with the NAS. I have an older machine which I updated to Precise at the same time (both fresh installed, not dist-upgrade), so should have a very similar configuration. It is not having any problems. I am not having problems on windows machines/partitions either, only one of my Precise machines. The two machines are using identical entries in fstab and identical /etc/samba/smb.conf files. I don't think I've ever changed smb.conf (has never mattered before). My fstab entries all basically look like this: //10.1.1.111/public /media/public cifs credentials=/home/downbeat/.credentials,iocharset=utf8,uid=downbeat,gid=downbeat,file_mode=0644,dir_mode=0755 0 0 Here's the dmesg output on boot: [ 51.162198] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to socket. Installing those two packages solved my errors with 'testparm -s', but did not fix my issue. Finally, I tried to purge and reinstall these packages smbclient smbfs cifs-utils samba-common samba-common-bin Still no luck. Again, it used to work; now it doesn't. Very similarly configured machine works (but some packages are out of date on the working machine). The NAS has only one interface/IP address, nmblookup works to find it's IP from it's hostname (from the machine with the issue) and it responds to a ping. Please any help would be great. I've been searching on AskUbuntu, SuperUser, ubuntuforums and plain old search engines for a week now and it's driving me crazy!

• How do you disable SMB printing support?

  Hi, I'm running CentOS on a storage server that has to do file sharing for with Windows machines. SMB version is smbd version 3.5.5-68.fc13 I'm getting a lot of error messages in /var/log/messages regarding failed attempts to connect to a CUPS server. They look like this: Nov 30 18:49:34 big03 smbd[9927]: [2010/11/30 18:49:34.850620, 0] printing/print_cups.c:108(cups_connect) Nov 30 18:49:34 big03 smbd[9927]: Unable to connect to CUPS server localhost:631 - Connection refused I understand that the issue is generated by the fact that SMB comes with printer sharing support, but I'm really not interested in that. I just want to disable the feature to get rid of the messages. Any idea how I can do that?

• smb mount cannot sync file automatically

  Under Ubuntu, I use smb to mount the directory of the server(Ubuntu too), and set to a local directory, like /home/username/server. When I change some files of local directory, the files in the server change too. However, when I change some files of the server, the files in local directory don't change. Does someone know what the reason is ? And could someone fix it and make local changes updated to the server so that I could edit local and make in the server?

  My landlord would like to print to her printer connected to her Mac from Windows machines in her house. (I'm unsure of what versions of windows, but I assume Vista or 7.) Looking at these docs from Apple, it sounds like I can set up the share via Bonjour for Windows or SMB. What are the pros and cons of doing it one way or the other? Has anybody who has tried both found one more reliable than the other, or is it pretty much a tossup?

• vhost.conf file in PLESK not working as intended

  I have configured a vhost file for my domain but it does not seem to work. These are the steps I took, please correct me if I am wrong. First I made a file called vhost.conf in: /var/www/vhosts/*domain*/conf/vhost.conf The content of the vhost file looks like this: <Directory /var/www/vhosts/*domain*/httpdocs> php_admin_flag engine on php_admin_flag display_errors on </Directory> Now in my /etc/php.ini i set display_errors=Off After everything i rebuild with: /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/websrvmng -a But I don't see the any errors in my page. When i turn on the display_errors in /etc/php.ini only then can I see the errors. I know for a fact that the vhost file is read, because when i type nonsense values i get an error when restarting apache saying there are errors in the vhost file. Anyone know what the problem can be. Should there be special settings in either the php.ini file or the httpd.conf file. The httpd.conf i edit is in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf. Is this the file that PLESK uses or is there another, because the values i see there do not really reflect the http folders of my domain. The httpd file looks like this now. # The document root DocumentRoot "/var/www/html" # i guess this is the base directory <Directory /> Order Deny,Allow Deny from all Options None AllowOverride None </Directory> # And i guess here are all my domains located, but there aren't any here <Directory "/var/www/html"> Options None AllowOverride None Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> Only this directory /var/www/html is not used by me, I use the directory /var/www/vhosts. • SMB shared folder error when creating additional share on our SAN

  Okay, we have a SAN using Failover Cluster Management on a pair of 2008 servers. We created shares on here before and they are usable. Now when I go to create a new share I get the following error message: "Flags for the SMB Shared folder cannot be configured. This shared resource does not exist" Does not allow me to create the share then. Haven't been able to find any good docs out there to help me through this error. Any advice would be appreciated.

• Mac OS can't connect to SMB shares after sleep

  I used to access my local Windows 2008 file server's SMB shares on my recent (3 weeks old) MacBook Pro without problems. However, for a few days now, it fails to (re-)connect to the server after it woke up from sleep mode. Finder just shows "connecting..." and hangs indefinitely. The same thing happens when I try it from the command line (mount -t smbfs). This happens via both WiFi and cable, I also tried turning networking off and back on. The only thing that helps is a reboot. Any hints?

• Network Transfer Rate on SMB/FTP

  Hi, We're trying to optimise our network transfer rate from the client PCs to the file server, but having no luck. If I run an iperf test between a client PC (Windows XP) and our server (Linux) with a large TCP window size (the default is 8kb) I can get 60 Mbps. But when I run an SMB transfer speed test all I get is around 35 Mbps. When I run an FTP transfer speed test all I get is around 32 Mbps. I thought this was to do with the TCP window size, but I have now increased that to 256960 and it made no difference at all. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Or is 35 Mbps all I should expect? • Using Bazaar (BZR) on AFT or SMB mounted server not wroking

  Has anyone been able to get BZR working on a mounted AFT or SMB mounted share? I've tried both (The AFP volume is actually coming off an Xserver.) and neither work. I have BZR 2.0.0 and am running it on a Mac with 10.5. I keep getting an error like this bzr: ERROR: Could not acquire lock "/Volumes/joeserver/Documents/bzr/remote_test/.bzr/checkout/dirstate": [Errno 45] Operation not supported I googled around a bit but only found a fairly stale (2007) bug report on launchad.com (Bug #313625 to be specific.) Any ideas?

• Share Only 1 folder using SMB

  I want to share my "My Videos" folder using Windows's built in SMB. The problem is that when I decide to share my video folder and check it on another device, the path always is: networkname>username>my videos instead of just my videos I noticed that indeed sharing gets turned on from the user folder down to the video folder instead of just on the folder I selected. So now my question is why this is happening; And how cold I just display my "my Videos" folder on my remote device and not the entire path? BTW device in question is a hacked Apple TV. thank you for your help! Christopher

• Sharing a symlinked (`mklink /d`) directory via SMB?

  I have a Windows 7 amd64 box where one directory is shared: local path is d:\drop\ remote path is \\aloism\drop from SMB point of view, Everyone has Read and Write permission ACLs for the folder are set so that all authenticated users have read and write permissions:NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:(OI)(CI)C (which is inherited to all levels below) Now I create a symbolic link within the structure of the directory: D:\drop>mklink /d tools2 tools symbolic link created for tools2 <<===>> tools The problem is that I can't access this new directory from any of the remote machines (a Windows 7 box and a Windows XP box—both behave the same way): C:\>dir \\aloism\drop\tools2\ Volume in drive \\aloism\drop is droot Volume Serial Number is FA73-1897 Directory of \\aloism\drop\tools2 File Not Found How can I make it work? Possibly also for files?

  I'm having issues getting SMB file shares working over a PPTP VPN. The server setup consists of a security device (DrayTek V3300) which passes the PPTP authentication to a SBS2003 server running RRAS. The server is the DC and provides DNS and WINS, the single NIC's name server is set to the NIC's IP (192.168...), and DHCP on the DrayTek sets the server IP as the DNS. If I create a new VPN connection in Win7, leaving everything as default apart from the server, username, password and domain, I can: ping everything by IP address resolve IPs with nslookup using their fully-qualified name, as in nslookup fileserver.mydomain.local ping machines by fully-qualified name, as in ping fileserver.mydomain.local However if I try to access a file share: within Explorer, I get "Windows cannot access ..." with "Error code: 0x80004005 Unspecified Error", using net use z: \\fileserver.mydomain.local\share, I get "System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found." If I add the machine name to my HOSTS file I can use the file share, which is my last-ditch workaround, but I have a number of VPN users and would rather a solution that doesn't involve me trying to hand-edit system files on computers half a country away. If I set the WINS server explicitly in the connection's IPv4 settings I don't have to use the FQN to ping the machine, but that doesn't change anything else. EDIT: The PC I'm having the issue on is running Win 7 Home Premium. After more testing I actually have two other PCs that work, one W7HP, one XP Home, and another Vista PC that doesn't work (not tested as much as the others), all four on the same internet connection (behind the same router). All of them were tested with a straight-forward, all defaults, new VPN configuration.
