  • Why is only the suffix of work_index hashed?

    - by Jaroslav Záruba
I'm reading through the PDF that Brett Slatkin has published for Google I/O 2010: "Data pipelines with Google App Engine": http://tinyurl.com/3523mej In the video (the Fan-in part) Brett says that the work_index has to be a hash, so that 'you distribute the load across the BigTable': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSDC_TU7rtc#t=48m44 ...and this is how work_index is created: work_index = '%s-%d' % (sum_name, knuth_hash(index)) ...which I guess creates something like 'mySum-54657651321987' I do understand the basic idea, but is why only one half of work_index is hashed? Is it important to hash only part of it leaving the suffix out? Would it be wrong to do md5('%s-%d' % (sum_name, index)) so that the hash would be like '6gw8....hq6' ? I'm Java guy so I would use md5 to hash, which means I get id like 'mySum' + 32 characters. (Obviously I want my ids/keys to be as short as possible here.) If I could hash the whole string my id would be just 32 chars. Or would you suggest to use something else to do the hashing with?

  • How to add a suffix at the end of a string in PHP

    - by Golem
I am trying to add a .html suffix at the end of all strings supplied by the user before it is entered into the database. Here's my code so far: strtolower(str_replace(" ", "_", $postTitle)); The above takes the title of the post the user it trying to make, turns it to lower case, replaces all white spaces with underscores and makes it ready to be entered into a database column called post_url. I just need it to do one more thing and that's to add a .html at the end of each post url. What is the function to do this?

  • Messenger Thinks My Ip is Invalid

    - by Umut Benzer
Hello. I am using Windows Live Messenger 2009 on Windows 7. I am using a 3G modem (ZTE Propietary USB Modem) I connect to the Internet using a software my ISP provided me. In last three days, my Messenger started to disconnect. Here is what I observed and tried to do: 1- I can browse web, can do FTP transfer etc. and obiviously have a valid IP. 2- I can sign in to Messenger (appear offline) but when I change my status to anything other then appear offline, Messenger says my connection to service has been lost. (However, it exists.) 3- When I run, MSN Connection Troubleshooter, it says my IP is invalid. When I click repair, it says repaired and just after that, I run the troubleshooter again, and it says my IP is invalid again. (However, it is valid and I am browsing the net.) 4- If I connect the Internet through eterhet or wireless there is no problem at all. 5- I re-installed Messenger (deleting all settings manually through registry and folders), re-installed all drivers and software related to USB 3G Modem. It doesn't work. And then, I took a full backup then formatted entire computer, installed a fresh windows 7, after 5 minutes, the same problem occured. What do you recommend? What can I do? Addition As seen on screenshot, it says Server IPv4 adress is 0.0.0.0 It seems like a problem, I don't know if it is. If it is, how can I solve it? Here is what I get, when I netstat. • Regular expression, excluding .. in suffix of email addy

    - by user1754700
This is homework, I've been working on it for a while, I've done lots of reading and feel I have gotten pretty familiar with regex for a beginner. I am trying to find a regular expression for validating/invalidating a list of emails. There are two addresses which are giving me problems, I can't get them both to validate the correct way at the same time. I've gone through a dozen different expressions that work for all the other emails on the list but I can't get those two at the same time. First, the addresses. [email protected] - invalid [email protected] - valid The part of my expression which validates the suffix I originally started with @.+\\.[[a-z]0-9]+ And had a second pattern for checking some more invalid addresses and checked the email against both patterns, one checked for validity the other invalidity but my professor said he wanted it all in on expression. @[[\\w]+\\.[\\w]+]+ or @[\\w]+\\.[\\w]+ I've tried it written many, many different ways but I'm pretty sure I was just using different syntax to express these two expressions. I know what I want it to do, I want it to match a character class of "character+"."character+"+ The plus sign being at least one. It works for the invalid class when I only allow the character class to repeat one time(and obviously the ip doesn't get matched), but when I allow the character class to repeat itself it matches the second period even thought it isn't preceded by a character. I don't understand why.

  • JavaScript date suffix formatting

    - by TexasB
    I have done my due diligence in investigating this and not had any success yet. Being rather green with JavaScript I am seeking some help. I am wanting to display the date NOV2012<br> 2<sup>nd</sup><br> 5:00 PM I have everything working (not my script) except being able to get the date suffix to change to st, nd, rd, or th as the case may be. This is what I have: <pre> <abbr title="Month"> <script type="text/javascript"> var d=new Date(); var month=new Array(12); month[0]="Jan"; month[1]="Feb"; month[2]="Mar"; month[3]="Apr"; month[4]="May"; month[5]="Jun"; month[6]="Jul"; month[7]="Aug"; month[8]="Sep"; month[9]="Oct"; month[10]="Nov"; month[11]="Dec"; document.write(month[d.getMonth()]); </script></abbr> <script type="text/javascript"> var d = new Date() document.write(d.getDate()) ordinal : function (number) { var d = number % 10; return (~~ (number % 100 / 10) === 1) ? 'th' : (d === 1) ? 'st' : (d === 2) ? 'nd' : (d === 3) ? 'rd' : 'th'; } }); </script> <sup>%</sup> <abbr><script type="text/javascript"> var d = new Date() document.write(d.getFullYear()) </script></abbr> <sub> <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- var currentTime = new Date() var hours = currentTime.getHours() var minutes = currentTime.getMinutes() if (minutes < 10){ minutes = "0" + minutes } document.write(hours + ":" + minutes + " ") if(hours > 11){ document.write("PM") } else { document.write("AM") } //--> </script> </sub> </pre> I know the issue is with this part: <pre> <script type="text/javascript"> var d = new Date() document.write(d.getDate()) ordinal : function (number) { var d = number % 10; return (~~ (number % 100 / 10) === 1) ? 'th' : (d === 1) ? 'st' : (d === 2) ? 'nd' : (d === 3) ? 'rd' : 'th'; } }); </script> < sup > % < /sup > </pre> but I can't seem to work out the right fix. This is where it is sitting: http://www.bcreativeservices.com/ Thank you as always. B

  • C# Custom data type!

    - by Betamoo
After I decided at last to implement my Int128 in C#, I thought it would be nice to make it look like other dotNet data types.. But I could not implement the following feature: suffix initialization: such as 13L and 0.2D Can I make my own suffix in C#? And if I can not.. how can I initialize it? i.e Int128 a= ??

  • Regex to match a whole string only if it lacks a given substring/suffix

    - by Ivan Krechetov
I've searched for questions like this, but all the cases I found were solved in a problem-specific manner, like using !g in vi to negate the regex matches, or matching other things, without a regex negation. Thus, I'm interested in a “pure” solution to this: Having a set of strings I need to filter them with a regular expression matcher so that it only leaves (matches) the strings lacking a given substring. For example, filtering out "Foo" in: Boo Foo Bar FooBar BooFooBar Baz Would result in: Boo Bar Baz I tried constructing it with negative look aheads/behinds (?!regex)/(?<!regex), but couldn't figure it out. Is that even possible?

  • Efficient most common suffix algorithm?

    - by taw
I have a few GBs worth of strings, and for every prefix I want to find 10 most common suffixes. Is there an efficient algorithm for that? An obvious solution would be: Store sorted list of <string, count> pairs. Identify by binary search extent for prefix we're searching. Find 10 highest counts in this extent. Possibly precompute it for all short prefixes, so it doesn't ever need to look at large portion of data. I'm not sure if that would actually be efficient at all. Is there a better way I overlooked? Answers must be real time, but it can take as much preprocessing as necessary.

  • How to speed up calculation of length of longest common substring?

    - by eSKay
I have two very large strings and I am trying to find out their Longest Common Substring. One way is using suffix trees (supposed to have a very good complexity, though a complex implementation), and the another is the dynamic programming method (both are mentioned on the Wikipedia page linked above). Using dynamic programming The problem is that the dynamic programming method has a huge running time (complexity is O(n*m), where n and m are lengths of the two strings). What I want to know (before jumping to implement suffix trees): Is it possible to speed up the algorithm if I only want to know the length of the common substring (and not the common substring itself)?

  • XML transform element appearing in wrong place in document

    - by Mike
I am having some problems with an XML transform and need some help. The stylesheet should iterate through all suffix elements and place the contents without the suffix tag next to the last text node within its first ancestor quote-block element (see desired ouput). It works when only a single suffix is present, but not when 2 are present, when 2 are present it places both suffixes next to each other in the last text node of the first quote-block. Any ideas? I have tried limiting the selections to ancestor::quote-block[1] in various places but that doesn't have the desired effect. • Add DNS suffixes to a Sonicwall PRO2040 firewall?

    - by eidylon
I want to have our network pass out DNS suffixes with the DHCP assignments, so that we don't need to add them to the TCP/IP settings on each computer. Our DHCP is not being handled by an actual server box, but by our Sonicwall firewall, which is a PRO 2040. Can this firewall be set up to append DNS suffixes? Thanks!

  • Ars Technica .ars URL suffix -- Vanity or SEO Benefit?

    - by yc01
The Technology website Ars Technica has adjusted their URL rewrite rules to end with a .ars. Traditionally, sites have taken advantage of this URL rewriting capability to completely eliminate file suffixes like .html, .php, .aspx etc, under the theory that this made for better SEO (since the content of the URL was more relevant to the content) Ars Technicas, though, look like this: http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2011/03/flow-from-the-poles-drive-sunspot-levels.ars So, is Ars Technica adding the .ars file suffix purely a vanity play? Or is it an SEO trick to improve the site's SEO by cleverly inserting their site name into every URL slug? And, if this is indeed an effective SEO trick, should other sites follow suit?

  • What version will be chosen by MSXML2.XMLHTTP request, without version suffix? [migrated]

    - by jayarjo
Probably every web developer is familiar with a pattern like this: var xmlHttp = null; if (window.XMLHttpRequest) { // If IE7, Mozilla, Safari, and so on: Use native object. xmlHttp = new XMLHttpRequest(); } else { if (window.ActiveXObject) { // ...otherwise, use the ActiveX control for IE5.x and IE6. xmlHttp = new ActiveXObject('MSXML2.XMLHTTP'); } } But the question is - if there are multiple MSXML versions available on the client's PC (let's say 3.0, 5.0, 6.0), which one of them will be chosen by MSXML2.XMLHTTP call (notice no version suffix at the end)? Will it be the latest or - not necessarily? And a side-question - is it possible to check which version was chosen?

  • Why do I have two different DNS suffix lists?

    - by Rob Kennedy
My Windows XP laptop has two different DNS suffix lists. The first is the one I see by selecting the Properties dialog of any of my network connections, selecting Internet Protocol Properties Advanced DNS tab, and looking at the list under the "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)" option. The second list is the one shown under "DNS Suffix Search List" when I run ipconfig /all. As far as I can tell, only the second list ever gets used to resolve unqualified host names. Why are there two different lists? How do I configure the second list? Or how can I make my computer use the first list?

  • LDAP object class violation: attribute ou not allowed in suffix?

    - by Paramaeleon
I am about to set up a LDAP directory. It is used as a tool to communicate user permissions from a web application to WebDav file system access, e.g. adding a user to the web platform shall allow login to the file system with the same credentials. There are no other usages intended. Following this German tutorial which encourages the use of the attributes c, o, ou etc. over dc, I configured the following suffix and root: suffix "ou=webtool,o=myOrg,c=de" rootdn "cn=ldapadmin,ou=webtool,o=myOrg,c=de" Server starts and I can connect to it by LDAP Admin, which reports “LDAP error: Object lacks”. Well, there aren’t any objects yet. I now want to create the root and admin elements from shell. I created an init.ldif file: dn: ou=webtool,o=myOrg,c=de objectclass: dcObject objectclass: organization dc: webtool o: webtool dn: cn=ldapadmin,ou=webtool,o=myOrg,c=de objectclass: organizationalRole cn: ldapadmin Trying to load the file runs into an error, telling me that ou is not allowed: server:~ # ldapadd -x -D "cn=ldapadmin,ou=webtool,o=myOrg,c=de" -W -f init.ldif Enter LDAP Password: adding new entry "ou=webtool,o=myOrg,c=de" ldap_add: Object class violation (65) additional info: attribute 'ou' not allowed I am not using ou anywhere except in the suffix, so the question: Isn’t it allowed here? What is allowed here? Here is my answer. I am not allowed to post it as answer for 8 hours, so don’t mind that it is part of the question by now. I will move it outside some day, if I don’t forget to do so. There are numberous dependencies for the creation of elements, and error messages are rather confusing if you don’t know of the concept. The objectclass isn’t necessarily dcObject for the databases’ root node, as it is likely to guess when you read several tutoriales. Instead, it must correspond to the object’s type: Here, for a name starting with ou=, it must be organizationalUnit. I found this piece of information in these tables [Link removed due to restriction: Oops! • How to eliminate the domain suffix off my user profile folder when migrating to a new domain?

    - by Jerry Dodge
We have just upgraded a decade old SBS 2003 server to a brand new SBS 2011 machine. During the process, over 30 other client/server machines on that domain also needed to be dis-joined and re-joined from the old domain to the new one. These domains have different names and is not migrated in any way. It's built from scratch. Since each client machine had very unique user profiles under this domain, we needed to make sure these were all backed up and migrated over to the new domain. For the most part, profiles were migrated with no hassle, just by renaming the user profile folder names. However, in one case, when I log in to my domain account, it creates a profile folder with a suffix of the new domain name. I have replaced all the files in the profile's root which begin with "ntuser" with the files of the new profile. The only problem is half the applications can't find their data, because the folder name is different. How can I change this folder name and maintain this profile on the new domain? I have deleted every user account (except admin), deleted their profiles/folders, removed them from the registry, and made sure every trace of this account was gone. The computer was basically a dummy with only an admin account. Then, I log into the machine under my new domain user account (same username as the old domain). It creates a profile folder with my username plus a suffix extension of the new domain name. The client machine is Windows 7 Ultimate, the old server was SBS 2003, and the new server is SBS 2011.

  • Should I limit my type name suffix vocabulary when using OOP?

    - by Den
My co-workers tend to think that it is better to limit non-domain type suffixes to a small fixed set of OOP-pattern inspired words, e.g.: *Service *Repository *Factory *Manager *Provider I believe there is no reason to not extend that set with more names, e.g. (some "translation" to the previous vocabulary is given in brackets): *Distributor (= *DistributionManager or *SendingService) *Generator *Browser (= *ReadonlyRepositoryService) *Processor *Manipulator (= *StateMachineManager) *Enricher (= *EnrichmentService) (*) denotes some domain word, e.g. "Order", "Student", "Item" etc. The domain is probably not complex enough to use specialized approaches such as DDD which could drive the naming.

  • In a web app, is it wise to give log files ".txt" suffix?

    - by Pekka
I am building a logging mechanism in a web application. Being a Windows man, I tend to give files with textual content the .txt ending. The suffix is automatically registered to be opened in a text editor in any Windows environment, and is just a nice convention. The app is going to be redistributed, and running mostly on Linux, though. The Linux convention for log files is .log. Is there any good reason on the Linux end, besides convention, why I should use .log? Any filters, real-life applications that could become relevant and that will work only with a .log suffix? Or can I merrily call it error_log.txt?
