  • Firefox needs 1GB of RAM

    I work as a webdeveloper and for that I'm using firefox with firebug. I have noticed in the last time that after 2 hours of work, the firefox.exe process needed more than 1 GB of my working memory! Even if I close the window, the process still remains in the taskmanager and the only thing I can do is to 'kill' the process. Any suggestions? I'm using Windows7 with 2GB RAM, FF 3.6.8 y normally i have opened 10 tabs.

  • System crashes when internet connection is unplugged

    When i first tried to install any ubuntu newer than 10.04 on my netbook (Acer aspire one 722 11,6" WXGA - C-60 Dual Core APU - AMD Radeon HD 6250 - 1x HDMI - 2GB DDR3 - 320GB - 802.11bgN - 6CELL2.2 - BT 3.0 - VGA Webcam), it would fail to boot. I found out that the only fix to this was linking it to the internet via lan-cable during the installation. However, after installing ubuntu 12.04 successfully my system is crashing everytime i unplug the lan-cable. My first thought was disabling the netbook´s w-lan (via the band at the top) but it was not fixing the problem. Looking on the taskmanager ('top') during the process brought no further insight, no process was exploding or something like that. As i am out of guesses help would be really appreaciated.   • Best practice to identify and kill hanging process, when system hangs and reacts slowly on user input?

    Recently when I tried to open a video with VLC, my system slowed down, the open applications webbrowser, VLC and filemanager and others didn't react any longer. The mouse just reacted still very slowly. On a windows machine i would press a keycombi CTRL-ALT-DEL to open the taskmanager, search the process which caused the hang and kill it. Since i'm fairly new with the use of linux i haven't figured out the best practice for solve such a situation in Ubuntu. Which quick and effective way would you recommend to identify the hanging process and close it, when the system already reacts very slowly on user input?

  • Problem with Killing windows explorer ?

    I need to kill windows explorer's process (explorer.exe), for that it tried using System.Diagnostics.Process.Kill("Explorer.exe"); It works but the problem is that the explorer starts again, may be windows is doing that, anyway. When i kill explorer.exe with windows task manager, it doesn't come back, its stays killed I want to do whatever taskmanager is doing through my application.

    Hi! I am using Windows 7 64-bit 7600, with 4Gb of RAM. I have a serious problem, since something uses a lot of RAM(3.94Gb) and I see "stairs" in taskmanager, it rises to +3Gb RAM and it drops to about 2Gb and then rises slowly again, and suddenly drops. I tryed installing this version again and other versions, newer ones, but no effect. Ive even tryed disconnecting other harddrives while I installed it, and then installed NOD32 and updated it. How could I know what is using that much RAM? P.S.: I was suspecting superfetch service, I disabled it, restarted pc, and it didnt work, since the memory is the highest point when I login with password, it is really annoying since I need about 1minute to see my desktop, neither alone try anything else. After loging in it slowly drops and after random time it starts rising again. That doesnt happen immediately after a fresh windows install. And how the drivers go, I tryed older drivers for GPU, and newest ones.

  • VLC - How to restore GUI?

    I was mucking around with VLC setting up an http interface and somehow I've managed to turn off the default GUI - which i believe is the Qt interface. So now when i start VLC i get the process showing up in TaskManager (Im on Win 7) but no GUI. How can i re-enable GUI without an uninstall|install? I don't want to do this because I want to keep mucking around with it and if i accidentally turn off the GUI again I don't want to have to go through some uninstall|reinstall loop. I thought it would just be a config file entry somewhere but do you think i can find it? The config file that is.

  • Windows hangs on Rename, Delete and Move for specific MKV files

    I have been googling this issue for a long time, and no full solutions seem to be out there. For certain mkv files, windows hangs when moving, copying, or deleting. These files play fine in a player such as GOM player. System: a fast windows 7, 64 bit box. Results: CPU change is negligible Memory usage rockets up to ~100% In cased of delete or move, "discovering files" dialogue box stays up for a long time Rename simply shows spinning icon until it finishes Action is completed after EXTREMELY long amount of time Memory usage does not return to normal "Fixes:" Disable thumbnail creation (helps for some cases) After move/rename/delete kill explorer with taskmanager, and relaunch to re-claim your memory Even with the thumbnails turned off, the issue persists. I have also tried re-muxing a file, which worked fine, but still resulted in a file with the same above issues.

    We have servers on which we run tests and all users connect using the same credentials. The server allows 2 connections. What happens often is that one user is already active and the other two users keep hijacking the remaining session. Using query session, I can find out what are the active connections. But it does not list the client machine from where the session originates, which taskmanager displays. How do I get this information from a remote machine? I prefer a command line solution.     Hi there, Layout: i have at customer side a server (win2003 R2 SP2 standard edition 32-bit) with a sql-server 2005 and some databases. This system starts with the /3GB-Switch. The system reports 3.25 GB RAM and taskmanager reports the process of sqlserver.exe with 2758255 K as the process with the highest consumption. The OS separates RAM for applications and for itself, normaly 50:50. But here we have the /3GB-Switch aktivated and i think the part for the applications is more than 50% of RAM. Knowledge (or better not knowledge): Somebody told me that if the OS runs out of memory within his part of RAM, the server runs into pressing mode. Questions: What is this pressing mode? Is pressing mode possible at all in this szenario? What should be done to get more performance out of this sql-server, beside optimizing the database and all this stuff.

  • aptana/eclipse blocks other apps

    Hi, I've got a fresh win7 installation, the only apps installed so far are aptana (beta 3)/eclipse and firefox + chrome (except antivirus and drivers) Every time I start aptana, chrome and firefox are blocked, so firefox can't load a webpage (or sometimes takes veeeery long) and chrome doesn't even take care of events (so for example hovering over a link doesn't change the cursor and a click does...nothing or typing in an url, press enter - nothing happens) First I thought, aptana downloads something and blocks my internet connection... but IE works well and also there are no signs in the taskmanager (cpu%, network or memory) When I close Aptana, all works as before. I tried updating Java, which didn't help... On my office-computer I use the same apps and it works perfect. Got any ideas? TIA, waquner

    My question is why does "cmd" exist (idle) in my process after i update my exe? In my code i run this code to update myself and launch var args = string.Format(@"/C ping 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 3000 & move /Y ""{0}"" ""{1}"" & ""{1}"" {2}", updateFn, fn, exeargs); new Process() { StartInfo = new ProcessStartInfo(@"cmd", args) { CreateNoWindow = true, UseShellExecute = false } }.Start(); Environment.Exit(0); The idea is i exit right away and have ping stall for 3seconds before trying to replace my current exe with my updated exe. Then i launch with the necessary args The full arg for cmd looks like this /C ping 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 3000 & move /Y "c:\path\update" "c:\path\my.exe" & "c:\path\my.exe" exeargs Everything works fine however i see cmd in the taskmanager (looks to be idle) after my process is launched and correctly working. Why?

  • How to bring back a far right chromeless window?

    Accidentally some windows goes far right, and "goes out of" to the monitor. I know keyboard shortcuts to move it back when the windows have a title bar. But that windows (HTC Home and Rainlendar) don't have title bar, doesn't appears in windows TaskBar or TaskManager. I've tryed restart windows; to close and reopen that software; change the resolution to very low, and then to very high; but it doesn't works... I know that I can dig in the settings files of that programs, but I think interesting discover how to bring back that windows so I can use that technique if that problem appears again with another softwares too.   • SBS 2008 - Blank desktop while installing

    I'm trying to install SBS 2008 Standard Ed on a VMware Workstation 8. The installation runs fine up until some point where the desktop becomes completely blank. The server is still running and responds to CTRL+ALT+DELETE and CTRL+ESC, but there are no icons and no explorer-bar. I have tried to install it twice now and each time it comes to a halt at the same spot. Starting Taskmanager and launching explorer.exe only brings up the filemanager. Anyone have a clue to what it could be?

  • strange memory usage pattern on windows server 2008 on login through remote desktop..

    I'm running Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Service Pack 2 on a VM Ware instance with 10Gb ram allocated. I'm not running IIS or SQL Server. Under 'normal' conditions, the machine uses ~5.5Gb of memory. However, when I login to the server through remote desktop, the memory usage slowly climbs up to 9.8Gb of memory in use. After several minutes the memory slowly creeps back down to the 5.5Gb mark. I've tried killing all the processes associated with my login, on login, barring the taskmanager without success, and I can't see any process that is growing in memory usage when the memory is increasing. I'm assuming this is some system level cache that is growing / shrinking... but why is it doing this?

  • Cannot create multiple instances of PowerPoint

    I'm working on a project where I need to use PowerPoint from C#.net. Initially, I always created one single instance. As of today, I would like to have multiple instance running. I do that like so: Type powerpointType = Type.GetTypeFromProgID("PowerPoint.Application"); object instance1 = Activator.CreateInstance(powerpointType); object instance2 = Activator.CreateInstance(powerpointType); but when I ask for the handle of both instances, by calling hwnd = (int)powerpointType.GetProperty("HWND").GetValue(instance1, null); then I get the same handle twice. My conclusion is that the application is started just once, and the TaskManager comfirms that: Only one process. How come there is only one instance of PowerPoint running, and how can I make it work?

  • pyinstaller: 2 instances of my cherrypy app exe get executed.

    I have a cherrypy app that I've made an exe with pyinstaller. now when I run the exe it loads itself twice into memory. Watching the taskmanager shows the first instance load into about 1k, then a second later a second instance of hte exe loads into about 3k ram. If I close the bigger one both processes die. If I close hte smaller one only that one dies. Loading the exe with subprocess, if I try to proc.kill(), it only kills the small one leaving the other running in memory. Is this a sideeffect of using cherrypy and pyinstaller together?

  • Is there a way to make sure a background process spawned by my program is killed when my process ter

    Basically the child process runs indefinitely until killed in the background, and I want to clean it up when my program terminates for any reason, i.e. via the Taskmanager. Currently I have a while (Process.GetProcessesByName("ParentProcess").Count() 0) loop and exit if the parent process isn't running, but it seems pretty brittle, and if I wanted it to work under debugger in Visual Studio I'd have to add "ParentProcess.vshost" or something. Is there any way to make sure that the child process end without requiring the child process to know about the parent process? I'd prefer a solution in managed code, but if there isn't one I can PInvoke. Edit: Passing the PID seems like a more robust solution, but for curiosity's sake, what if the child process was not my code but some exe that I have no control over? Is there a way to safeguard against possibly creating orphaned child processes?

    I am getting OutOfMemoryError: java heap snippets of the method: { // step 1: I am creating a 2 dim array int totalCombination = (int) Math.pow(2.0, (double) vowelCount); here vowelCount > 10 // step2: initializing my array // step3: and using that array } My Question: each time this method is called, that array is getting created. Is it possible that the array is not getting released . In windows taskmanager i can see memory used by java is purely incremental. So it is not that at a point heap size is less, but memory is repetitively used and not released somehow. Please let me know if you need more detal. Please help to debug the error. Anuj

    How can I make an app or maybe service that looks like (Nexus One touch buttons) for the navigation keys (Home, menu,Back, Search) The buttons should always be visibly and always stay on top and send the command to the app thats running. Someone have ideas and sample codes how to do that? * I see an app with name (Smart Taskmanager) wich always detect when you touch the right side of the screen and then detect when you slide the finger to left. So I think its possible, with this function I think its possible to implementate the code to simulate the (Home, Meny, Back, Search) buttons. * I also see and test an app wich show a "cracked display" always ontop so that tecnic maybe shold be useful to always show the buttons/bitmanp on top. Thoose function, to show the button and catch the "touch event" and send the event to the active program, thats what i dont can figure out how to do. Thats my thought!   • Exception when ASP.NET attempts to delete network file.

    Greetings - I've got an ASP.NET application that is trying to delete a file on a network share. The ASP.NET application's worker process is running under a domain account (confirmed this by looking in TaskManager and by using ShowContexts2.aspx¹). I've been assured by the network admins that the process account is a member of a group that has Modify permissions to the directory that contains the file I'm trying to delete. However, it is unable to do so, and instead I get an exception (changed the file path to all x's): System.Web.HttpUnhandledException: Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown. --- System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path '\xxxxxxx\xxxxxxx\xxxxxxx\xxxxxx.xxx' is denied.   • memory usage in C# (.NET) app is very high, until I call System.GC.Collect()

    I've written an app that spins a few threads each of which read several MB of memory. Each thread then connects to the Internet and uploads the data. this occurs thousands of times and each upload takes some time I'm seeing a situation where (verified with windbg/sos and !dumpheap) that the Byte[] are not getting collected automatically, causing 100/150MB of memory to be reported in task manager if I call System.GC.Collect() i'm seeing a huge drop in memory, a drop of over 100MB I dont like calling System.GC.Collect() and my PC has tons of free memory. however if anyone looks at TaskManager they're going to be concerned, thinking my app is leaking horribly. tips?
