• Why are Microsoft Windows Update taking so long to install?

  Hi, I have a question that is not related to a problem I have. Just something I'd like to understand. Why are Windows update so long? First Windows Update need to find witch updates you needs and this take about 5 minutes. What is happening behind the scene during those 5 minutes? I would have tought that it would be enough to compare the updates you already have to the complete list of updates or to check the version numbers of a couples files. Then when it comes time to install the upgrades, they're also taking a long time. Some 1 Mb updates takes 2, 3 or 5 minutes to install. What is taking so long. I would have though that it was simply a mater of backup the old file, uncompress the new files, replace the old file. This should be really fast. Is Windows doing something else? For comparison, under Linux, you can find which updates you need in about 20 seconds and installing them is usually pretty fast (The time to uncompress the files). I can do a complete updgrade of my linux machine in about 25 minutes (download 600-800 Mb of updates, hundreds of them and install them) while under windows 25 minutes is the time it needs to find witch update are needed and install about 5-10 updates. I just updated a Windows XP home from SP1a to SP3 + all other updates. It took me more than 3 hours. Doing something like that in the Linux World takes about 30 minutes. I don't want to bash Microsoft here. I genuinly want to know what they do differently that makes it so long.

  Are they any method to protect video files with password, so player will ask for the pasword before playback? Currently I am protecting private video files using zip compression with password but it is very inconvenient. I am forced to uncompress huge files each time before watching, and than erase it using special utilities (to avoid further restoring). Please advice.

  In cooperation with my IT teacher we want to boot all PC's in IT class with Lubuntu. I've successfully set up PXE server, but there is one thing that worries us. Harddrives shouldn't be accessible from booted Lubuntu(normal user only). Would adding to fstab something like: /dev/sda1 /Idk/What auto noauto work? I'd like to add that I can uncompress squashfs livecd filesystem. If no, what other solution is there, to block auto-mounting /dev/sda drive?

Uncompress the css style classes 3. CHECK_FILE_MODIFICATION so that you see your skinning changes right away 4. View the generated CSS File   1. Firebug is your friend Install Firebug (http://getfirebug.com/layout) into Firefox and use it to view your rendered jspx page in the browser. You can select the HTML dom nodes on your page and you can see the css styles applied to each dom node.   2. Uncompress the css style classes By default the styleclasses that are rendered are compressed. You may see style classes like class="x10" and class="x2e". But in your skin css file you have styleclasses like: af|inputText::content or af|panelBox::header   It is easier for you to develop a skin and debug a skin with Firebug if you see the uncompressed styleclasses. To do this, a. open web.xml b. add   <context-param>     <param-name>org.apache.myfaces.trinidad.DISABLE_CONTENT_COMPRESSION</param-name>     <param-value>true</param-value>   </context-param> c. save d. restart the server and re-run your page.   3. CHECK_FILE_MODIFICATION so that you see your skinning changes right away   For performance sake the ADF Faces framework does not check if you skin .css file has changed on every render. But this is exactly what you want to happen when you are developing or debugging a skin. You want your changes to get noticed right away, without restarting the server.   To do this, a. open web.xml b. add   <context-param>     <description>If this parameter is true, there will be an automatic check of the modification date of your JSPs, and saved state will be discarded when JSP's change. It will also automatically check if your skinning css files have changed without you having to restart the server. This makes development easier, but adds overhead. For this reason this parameter should be set to false when your application is deployed.</description>     <param-name>org.apache.myfaces.trinidad.CHECK_FILE_MODIFICATION</param-name>     <param-value>false</param-value>   </context-param> c. save d. restart the server and re-run your page. e. from then on, you can change your skin's .css file, save it and refresh your page and you should see the changes right away   4. View the generated CSS File   There are different ways to view the generated CSS File which is your skin's css file merged in with all the skins it extends and processed and generated to the filesystem and linked to your generated html page. One way is to view it with Firebug. The problem with this approach is you might see something that is a little different than the actual css file because Firebug may do some extra processing.   I have an tarball, myarchive.tar.gz. When I uncompress it using "tar -zxvf myarchive.tar.gz", it creates a folder myarchive-x980-2303-ssioo. What's the easiest way to automatically rename the extracted folder to ensure it matches the name of the archive? I've checked tar's manpage, but it doesn't seem to have an option for this.

• Sphinx search: failed to unpack mysqlcompress column

  I have compiled sphinx 0.9.9 for debian x64. When I try to index using unpack_mysqlcompress, I get this error: "WARNING: failed to unpack column 'page_text', error=-5" The 'page_text' field is around 5Kb, and unpack_mysqlcompress_maxsize is set to 64M, yet the zlib manual says error -5 indicates Z_BUF_ERROR. Also if mysql does the decompression using UNCOMPRESS(), it works fine. Any ideas why sphinx is generating this error?

• MinGW tar compression problem

  I am unable to get the Mingw tar to work with compress files. It does not filter through the proper compression utility. However, tar will work if I manually uncompress the file first. I have tried in both the MSYS shell and Windows cmd. Has anyone had this problem or is it a MinGW bug? • Playing/extracting audio file from PDF

  I use Ubuntu and I have a PDF file that contains an audio annotation. It won't play on Okular, it treats it as a text annotation. Following an old blog post where the poster created a small C script to extract the audio didn't work either, I suspect the format of these audio annotations has changed. Using the information on it I managed to uncompress the PDF and with vim, I found the audio data in the file. I tried copying this into its own file and changed the extension from mp3, wav, mid, but none of them would play. Is there a way of achieving this?

For this I have an file on the Iphone whose content I have to upload on php server. For this I have converted the content of the file in NSData and now I want to encrypt this nsdata object and then pass it to the php server and on php server firstly I have to decrypt the nsdata object then I have to upload it on the server. But I am not able to find any way by which I can encrypt some data in Iphone app and then decrypt it in php. And also I want to compress the encrypted data before transferring it to php and then uncompress that data on php. The complete flow of my application is IPhone NSData -- Encrypted NsData -- Compressed Encrypted Data php Compressed Encrypted Data -- uncompressed encrypted data -- decrypted (original) NSData. • Reading from compressed lucene index

  I created a lucene index and compressed the index directory with bz2 or zip. I donot want to uncompress it. Is there any API call that can read the index from this zipped directory and thus allow searching and other functionalities. That is, can lucence IndexReader read the index from a compressed file. I saw that Lucnene IndexReader does not support "Reader" to open the index, otherwise I would have created a Reader class that uncompresses the file and streams the uncompressed version. • Regex to match the first file in a rar archive file set in Python

  I need to uncompress all the files in a directory and for this I need to find the first file in the set. I'm currently doing this using a bunch of if statements and loops. Can i do this this using regex? Here's a list of files that i need to match: yes.rar yes.part1.rar yes.part01.rar yes.part001.rar yes.r01 yes.r001 These should NOT be matched: no.part2.rar no.part02.rar no.part002.rar no.part011.rar no.r002 no.r02 I found a similar regex on this thread but it seems that Python doesn't support varible length lookarounds. A single line regex would be complicated but I'll document it well and it's not a problem. It's just one of those problems you beat your heap up, over. Thanks in advance guys. :)

  Hi! Is there a Delphi-5 solution to easily integrate single-file storage into existing code? I would like to have files like Java *.jar or Openoffice document files which are zipped/compressed files and folders but with their own file extension. Edit: I know some ZIP capable components but in a nutshell I want to access files within the "container" and use normal file handling routines on them (eg. TStringList.SaveToFile). Any overhead about compress/uncompress should be handled by the component.

• CLR Function not working in restored database

  So I've restore a database with CLR assemblies in it from one physical server to another. One of the functions in the CLR assembly essentially does an uncompress of some compressed data. When I run this function against data in the restored database it returns the compressed data (rather than the uncompressed data). No error is thrown in SSMS or in the SQL server error logs. At the suggestion of others, I've checked differences in the database ownership (both owned by sa), trustworthiness (both set to not trustworthy). I also checked differences in the .NET framework installs on both machines but found only that the target machine had a 1.1 version installed that the source didn't. I don't know what else to try.
